They want to overtake the Conservatives to be the second party in local government – could they one day overtake the Tories to become the official opposition?  A former civil servant, Oxford University policy manager and councillor, Calum joins Coffee House Shots to talk about why he got into politics, how Brexit radicalised his desire for good governance and why, for all the fun, there is a serious point behind Ed Davey's stunts.  Produced by Patrick Gibbons.

An exploration of the much-derided English suburbs through rap music. There are many different Englands. From the much-romanticized rolling countryside, to the cosmopolitanism of the inner cities (embraced by some as progressive, multicultural enlightenment and derided by others as the playground of a self-righteous metropolitan elite), or the disparagingly named "left behind" communities which, post-Brexit, have so interested political parties and pundits, demographers and statisticians. But there is also an England no one cares about. The England of semi-detached houses and clean driveways for multiple cars devotedly washed on Sundays, of "twitching curtains" and Laura Ashley sofas; of cul-de-sacs to nowhere and exaggerated accents; of late night drives to petrol stations on A roads, fake IDs tested in Harvesters, and faded tracksuits and over-gelled hair in Toby Carverys; of questionable hash from a "mate of a mate" and two-litre bottles of White Lightning from Budgens consumed in a kids playground. Much derided. Unglamorous, ordinary; cultural vacuity and small "c" conservatism. A hodgepodge. An--apparently--middling, middle-of-the-road middle-England of middle-class middle-mindedness. Part poetry anthology, part academic study into placemaking, and part autoethnography, The England No One Cares About (Goldsmith Press, 2024) innovatively brings together academic discussions of the ethnographic potential of lyrics, scholastic representations of suburbia, and thematic analysis to explore how rap music can illuminate the experiences of young men growing up in suburbia. The first, and only, inside story of one of the greatest bands in rock history--Dire Straits--as told by founding member and bassist John IllsleyOne of the most successful music acts of all time, Dire Straits filled stadiums around the world. Their albums sold hundreds of millions of copies and their music--classics like "Sultans of Swing," "Romeo and Juliet," "Money for Nothing," and "Brothers in Arms"--is still played on every continent today. There was, quite simply, no bigger band on the planet throughout the eighties. In this powerful and entertaining memoir, founding member John Illsley gives the inside track on the most successful rock band of their time. From playing gigs in the spit-and-sawdust pubs of south London, to hanging out with Bob Dylan in LA, Illsley tells the story of the band with searching honesty, soulful reflection, and wry humor. Starting with his own unlikely beginnings in Middle England, he recounts the band's rise from humble origins to the best-known venues in the world, the working man's clubs to Madison Square Garden, sharing gigs with wild punk bands to rocking the Live Aid stage at Wembley. And woven throughout is an intimate portrait and tribute to his great friend Mark Knopfler, the band's lead singer, songwriter, and remarkable guitarist.Tracing an idea that created a phenomenal musical legacy, an extraordinary journey of joy and pain, companionship and surprises, this is John Illsley's life in Dire Straits.Buy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://wellingtonsquarebooks.indiecommerce.com/book/9781635769159

Neil Woodford was the fund manager who seemed to have it all. Hailed as the genius who "made Middle England rich", he ran one of the UK's best performing investment funds for decades. And then in a few hubristic years, after sticking his own name above the door, he raised an insane amount of cash, made some risky bets and lost the lot. Neil and Jonathan talk to David Ricketts, author of a book on Woodford, about his fall, the reasons for it, and what we've learned.Presented by Jonathan Ford and Neil Collins. With David Ricketts.Produced and edited by Nick Hilton for Podot. Shakespeare and Company

Bournville, Jonathan Coe's latest novel, ostensibly follows the life of Mary Lamb (née Clarke) from VE Day 1945, when she was a precocious young pianist, to the darkest depths of the recent pandemic, stopping off at some of the events that helped define (and redefine) Britain over the last seven decades. As we hop from the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, to the 1966 World Cup, through jubilees and the death of Princess Diana, we live not only alongside Mary, but also her parents, her husband, her children and grandchildren, (and in a wider sense the British people as a whole) seeing these events through their eyes, and feeling their sense of excitement or despair at the changes and upheavals in their world.Buy Bournville: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/product/7673827/coe-jonathan-bournville*SUBSCRIBE NOW FOR BONUS EPISODESLooking for Friends of Shakespeare and Company read Ulysses? https://podfollow.com/sandcoulyssesIf you want to spend even more time at Shakespeare and Company, you can now subscribe for regular bonus episodes and early access to Friends of Shakespeare and Company read Ulysses.Subscribe on Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/sandcoSubscribe on Apple Podcasts here: https://podcasts.apple.com/fr/podcast/shakespeare-and-company-writers-books-and-paris/id1040121937?l=enAll money raised goes to supporting “Friends of Shakespeare and Company” the bookshop's non-profit, created to fund our noncommercial activities—from the upstairs reading library, to the writers-in-residence program, to our charitable collaborations, and our free events.*Jonathan Coe was born a few miles from Bournville in 1961. Professor Tim Evans of Middlesex University assesses Liz Truss's first month in office and wonders if the era of the Magic Money Tree is coming to an end. He believes that the Bank of England, which has not performed well since the Financial Crisis, deserves greater scrutiny or it is in danger of sidelining itself. He considers how Europe is pivoting away from China and worries that China may become yet more authoritarian. And, while Labour is riding high in the polls, he believes Keir Starmer has a lot of work to do to make Middle England comfortable with him. Learn more about your ad choices. A Breath of Fresh Air

A Breath of Fresh Air

DIRE STRAITS filled giant stadiums around the world and sold hundreds of millions of records. Throughout the eighties they were one of the biggest bands on the planet. Their classic songs - 'Sultans of Swing', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Money for Nothing', 'Brothers In Arms' - formed the soundtrack of a generation and live on today: still racking up sales, still being played on the radio on every continent. This week we devote the entire episode of A Breath of Fresh Air to Dire Straits' founding member and bassist, JOHN ILLSLEY who shares the story of one of the greatest live acts in rock history. Starting with his own unlikely beginnings in Middle England, he recounts the band's rise from humble origins in London's spit-and-sawdust pubs to the best-known venues in the world, the working man's clubs to Madison Square Garden, gigging with wild punk bands to the Live Aid stage at Wembley. From loading in their own equipment down beer chutes of London clubs to playing for seven million people on their final 1992 tour, he paints the expanding insanity of their global conquest, in a tale thick with unlikely characters, wild highs and inescapable downs. More than that, he describes the relationship that came through it all, which he values above any platinum disc. Until, ultimately, the shattering demands of touring on a global scale and living life in the spotlight took their inevitable toll. During our interview, John recounts stories about meeting and working with his great friend Mark Knopfler. He walks us through some of the band's best known tracks, telling us how they came to be and discusses his latest solo album, simply called 8. He also details his newly released autobiography ‘My Life in Dire Straits'. It's a fascinating chat. One that will keep you glued to hear more. Is there someone you'd like to hear featured on A Breath of Fresh Air? If so, please get in touch with me through the website, www.abreathoffreshair.com.au and let me know who you'd like me to find for you. It would be my pleasure to bring your favourite artist onto the show. And, if you like what you hear, could you possibly subscribe to the podcast and/or leave me a review/rating? It would really mean a lot to me. I hope you enjoy this week's episode. Please let me know if you do. Warm regards Sandy

This week, we chat about being a female knight, horseback archery, all the adrenaline, the tough times of 2020, and a bumper 2021. Kelly has been involved with and loved horses for as long as she can remember- starting off down the slightly more conventional eventing path, before finding a love for polo. Polo led Kelly to the Knights of Middle England- a company that combined her loves of horses and performance- and a job as a knight, a teacher, a performer, and provided the chance to inspire lots of little girls too. In 2020, the company's entire show season was cancelled due to covid, and with the teaching revenues hit too, Kelly also shares what it was like getting through those times when there were still a lot of mouths to feed and no income.

“MR. WILDER AND ME” Book presentation of Jonathan Coe's new novel – a portrait of the Austrian-American film legend Billy Wilder. Jonathan Coe is known for his satirical and deeply political novels. The British author wrote The Rotter's Clubabout the 70ties that prepared the political ground for Thatcherism; What a Carve Up! about the Thatcher years; The closed Circle in the run-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. His most recent book was Middle-England, which The Guardian called „a bittersweet Brexit novel“. Jonathan Coe presented the German edition at Kreiskyforum on March 9th 2020 – the last event before the first Covid lockdown. In his new novel Mr. Wilder and me Coe creates a fascinating portrait of the Hollywood legend, who spent his forming years in Vienna before the Second World War. Coe shows Wilder, the master of comedy and creator of Some like it hot in his own bittersweet comedy at the end of his career. While Billy Wilder shoots one of his last films Fedora in Europe, he re-connects with his memories of pre-war Europe and senses the onset of a new era. At Kreiskyforum Jonathan Coe will talk about his new book with Tessa Szyszkowitz and discuss how the generation of film-makers of Wilder's era used comedy in film as an escape from the traumatic experiences of World War Two. This event will be in English. The reading from Mr. Wilder and me will be both in English and German. German Edition: Jonathan Coe, Mr. Wilder und ich. Aus dem Englischen von Cathrine Hornung. We’re Still Here is back for another episode this week, making Friday a Friyay. And while tech and special projects editor Emily Wright is away for the week making pastry somewhere deep in Middle England, tech and global reporter Lucy Alderson has stepped in this week to debrief on this week’s biggest news stories with deputy editor Tim Burke. And unlike the jam-packed, news-filled week it was for all things property, Alderson and Burke kick off proceedings by discussing how the government’s U-turn on its back to the office campaign could see London turn into a doughnut – nothing in the middle with lots of activity round the edges. The duo discuss the various reactions from real estate heavyweights to the government’s new covid-19 measures, and how it will affect the capital’s recovery in the long-term. Attentions turn to discussing the latest developments concerning the widespread redundancy programmes taking place across the agency sector. This week saw a number of high profile senior directors strike out on their own to set up new consultancies after losing their jobs, and Alderson and Burke discuss the challenges, but also the opportunities, that removing the stigma around redundancies could present. The two also discuss another issue that stigma also surrounds – mental health. Last week EG launched its second annual mental health survey to gather insight into the mental health of property’s workforce. Last year’s survey showed that 1 in 4 property professionals had considered suicide, and EG is looking to see whether property has been able to shift those worryingly high stats back. She’s been through an emotional rollercoaster in recent years, including an emergency kidney transplant, mental health struggles and public break-ups with Justin Bieber and The Weeknd - all inspiration for the album, which she describes as her most honest yet. Sophie Harris reviews. Johnny Flynn was nominated for an Olivier Award for his performance in Jerusalem and won acclaim for his score for the BBC 4 series Detectorists. Flynn tells us about Magnitsky The Musical, which tells the story of the origins of the Magnitsky Act which allows governments to sanction those whom they see as offenders against human rights. Dream Word – HOPEMatthew 9:11-13 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, "Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" When Jesus heard that, He said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: ' NKJV.I once lived, and suffered, in Tunbridge Wells, the place which has often been referred to as the ‘Spiritual home of Middle-England,’ that is, the home of the presumed right-wing views of middle class, mainstream, non-urban white folks. In light of this, it was the satirical magazine, ‘Private Eye,’ who in its playfully constructed, obsessively and excessively complaining ‘letters to the editor,’ always signed them off with mock outrage as being from, ‘Yours faithfully, DISGUSTED of Tunbridge Wells.’ Now, while modern virtue signalling makes me sick, mock social outrage is of course hilarious! on the other hand, mock religious outrage born out of a lifetime of fat slumber is, absolutely anything but funny, for it is both in and of itself, a mockery. In this mad world in which we presently live, in this end of the age relationship freak show, in this silicon sideshow of drug-induced enhancement, and totally spiritually disenfranchised and demonised societies, I am afraid we need to lay aside any semblance of an attitude which lifts its nose, and shakes its head while writing letters to the 'Evangelical Times' signed by ‘Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells.’ For many years far too many folks have done nothing to remedy our society's worsening situation, (oh I don't mean giving flip-flops to female-fools on a Friday night, or even feeding the homeless which is a great thing to do, no, that is NOT helping society, it is helping the homeless, but its not helping society) and so really, with all of our social Gospel-ing, and with things getting worse by the day, just how can we act so disgusted? What right do we Evangelicals have to do so?As I write, in the last few days, the last bastion of protestant Christianity, Northern Ireland, voted to make abortion and gay marriage legal. In Northern Ireland! I wonder if it is at all possible for us to be shocked anymore? No, I didn’t think so. Therefore we should not act shocked. Therefore we should not feign religious disgust. It will do no good anyhow! Rather, we should guard ourselves and become an exemplary point of moral reference. Rather, we should gird ourselves with grace and stoop to conquer. Rather, we should go into all this mad and messy world and preach the Gospel to every crazy-creature that might listen. We need to be 'black and white' honest with people and then if they repent and change, then society will also be changed. Therefore, don’t be disgusted, but be decisive about doing something, even something about our very sick society, for it is most certainly cancerous and in great need of the great Physician. Oh, and by the way, He shall do those house calls but He shall do them through you! So, are you ready for the sacrifice? Are you ready to be courageous, truthful and honest? Yes, are you ready to call sinners to repentance? Are you learning what this means? Are you ready to summon 'the sick with sin' to come to the great physician? Are you learning what this means? Yes, in the end, the Gospel is always a social Gospel, yet remember my fellow social Gospelites, Christ never started a school, neither did He build a hospital, nor did He kick-start a social care program of any kind. No, He preached the Gospel, made disciples and He calls us to do the same. The physician we need is the curer of souls. Maybe when we focus on that, society will begin to heal, for, without Christ, we have NOTHING. Be decisive in preSupport the show (http://www.victorrobert.tv)

We went along this weekend to The Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol for the premiere screening of the new Do Not Bend film on the life and influence of photography writer, educator and maverick Bill Jay - and a full day of fantastic talks from influential photographers making work in the UK during the 1970's.The premiere screening last night (Friday 20th April) at The Martin Parr Foundation had a packed house and those attending weren't disappointed. Co-producers Grant Scott and Tim Pellatt created a very informative and touching tribute to Bill Jay - respected by many photographers and students in the UK where he was first editor of the influential Creative Camera magazine which ran from 1968–1969 before founding and editing twelve issues of the equally respected Album magazine from 1970-1971. Jay then moved to America in 1972 and founded the Photographic Studies program at Arizona State University, where he was professor of art history and taught photography history and criticism for 25 years. To a wider community of photography enthusiasts, Bill Jay will be remembered as co-author with long-time close friend David Hurn on their popular book On Being a Photographer, first published in 1997 and still in print.Ffoton's Brian Carroll caught up with Grant Scott to hear about the inspiration for making the film and his response to the audience reaction at the Premiere screening. Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the music impresario Raymond Gubbay. For 40 years he has brought popular classics and opera to the masses. His name has become synonymous with glittering evenings based on classical favourites with concerts often topped off with lasers, fireworks and light displays. He's worked with everyone from Pavarotti to Ray Charles and, while snooty critics dismiss it as 'middle-brow music for Middle England', it attracts audiences in their droves; two million people have now attended his 'Classical Spectacular' evenings. It's a long way from his early days, when he toured the country with a small troupe of singers and a pianist. Then, venues would pay him 84 guineas to put on a Viennese evening or a Gilbert and Sullivan night and he had to pay the musicians and cover the cost of transport and hotels before he earned a penny. He says he gives people what they want, "tunes they can hum" and more often than not, he gets it right. But in 2004, for once, he misjudged his audience: he wanted to open a third opera house in London offering cheaper seats to a wider audience, but even before the curtain rose for the first time he knew they weren't selling enough tickets to stay open. He says it's been the biggest disappointment of his career, but he doesn't rule out another attempt to bring opera to the West End.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: Final movement of Emperor piano concerto by Ludwig van Beethoven Book: Unabridged Collins/Robert/ English /French dictionary Luxury: An espresso coffee machine with coffee
