If you want a clear look at the way Michael Bates grew up, just turn on the famous documentary “Meth Storm” on Netflix. This is the town he grew up in, and the people he knew as his community. I met Bates as my husband's Sgt. in the Marine Corps. Immediately he was intimidating to me, but as we grew to know each other, I quickly realized how much more to his story I had to learn. In this episode, you'll hear how Bates (that's what we call him) went from living in an abandoned school bus, to owning a plane that he flies his family and friends around in. It wasn't easy, and it took work, but his perspective on life will leave you both inspired AND motivated to take a look at all of those opportunities around you and ask yourself…why not?Connect with us:Follow Kaity on Instagram @thebrand.5Learn More about the Brand5 and Take Five. My tales from the clandestine dance of drug deals and informant interactions expose the heart-pounding and complex realities that TV dramas barely scratch the surface of. I'll take you through my 'covert identity' days, sharing first-hand the gripping encounters and the ethical tightropes I walked alongside figures like Danny, the Vietnamese heroin dealer turned snitch. It's a journey through the labyrinth of crime and the people who navigate it for justice—or just to save their own skin. But the intrigue doesn't end there. Meet Betty, an informant whose story is as vital as it is fraught with danger. Her narrative, woven through the episodes of my career, showcases the impact these unsung heroes have on dismantling drug syndicates and saving lives—one precarious operation at a time. From the fake personas I've embodied to the real threats we've faced, this episode unveils the gritty truth behind the badges and the sacrifices made in the war on drugs. Tune in and find yourself at the edge of your seat as we shed light on a world that operates just beyond the reach of the law—until we step in. Ever wondered about the harrowing experiences behind the badge of an undercover cop? Today, I peel back the layers of my past life as "Michael Bates" to share with you the gut-wrenching moments from my first sting operation. My tale is one of a tightrope walk through deceit and danger, where a single slip of the tongue could be the difference between life and death. We navigate the murky waters of extracting confessions from hardened criminals and the psychological chess game it entails. My adversary, a double murderer, became an unwitting participant in a dance of identities, where my real first name became the pivot point for an encounter that could have spiralled out of control. In the courtroom, the stakes are just as high but played out in a different arena. I invite you to walk with me through the labyrinth of legal proceedings, where the truth I fought to uncover in the shadows now stands to be dissected beneath the harsh lights of the courtroom. Hear first-hand the turmoil of a life split between the witness stand and personal commitments, the battle of wits against defence lawyers, and the unexpected moments of levity that bind us all in our common humanity. And for those of you who've lived undercover, whether during the global pandemic or in the throes of crime, I'm looking to amplify your voice. Your stories of bravery and resilience are the ones I want to bring to light. Please be sure to Subscribe to and Follow the Podcast so you never miss an Episode and if you like what you are hearing then please "Like" the episode and podcast on your favourite podcast app.If you would like to be involved in Whisper In The Shadows Podcast through talking about your experiences as an Undercover Cop or tell your stories then I'd love to hear from you.I can be contacted on my socials below -Email - whisperintheshadowspodcast@gmail.comInstagram - @whisperintheshadowspodcastFacebook - Whisper in the Shadows Podcast Page

How far is jazz from classical music? Do they really speak radically different languages? Michael Bates' Acrobat and Lutosławski Quartet are ensembles from different musical environments. They have established an artistic dialogue focusing on the oeuvre of one of Poland's greatest 20th-century composers: Witold Lutosławski. The results of their work have been recorded and will soon be released under the Polish music label ANAKLASIS. This is the strange tale of a British family who decided to establish their own nation. On Christmas Eve 1966, Paddy Bates and his son, Michael, took possession of an abandoned anti-aircraft gun emplacement seven and a half miles off the coast of southeast England. The following year, they declared independence. Fifty-two years later they are still independent despite the occasional hiccup such as an armed invasion by German merceneries. In honor of the film's forthcoming golden anniversary, this week's subject has us grappling with the celebrated auteurism of Stanley Kubrick and his iconoclastic vision of a dystopian future, 1971's A Clockwork Orange. But first...the Blue Plate Special forces us to confront an even more alarming cultural product: the forthcoming presence of a Buzz Lightyear origin story. Seriously, why??? Thankfully, a new segment-within-a-segment allows the two of us to fan the flames of some recent cinematic line-reading obsessions we have indeed deemed worthy of your undivided attention: i.e. things we've been burning on (shout out to friend of the pod Jim Rome), Upon finally journeying through the sickening path of destruction wrought by today's subject film, we situate A Clockwork Orange within the wider spectrum of all things Kubrick, attempt to engage with the deceptively facile binary of anarchism or fascism such a satire attempts to suggest, and compare the film to the many other cinematic acts of nihilism shockingly routine and welcome in the larger cultural moment of 1971. Today's episode begins with rock & roll and ends with royalty. When bands like the Rolling Stones and the Beatles were becoming popular, they weren't played much on the radio in England. The BBC controlled the airwaves at the time, and some listeners described its music offerings as "square." So aspiring DJs packed up their record collections, got in boats, and sailed past the territorial limits of the UK, where they set up pirate radio stations in the sea—sometimes on abandoned WWII sea forts. One fort was taken over by a man named Roy Bates. When his pirate radio station didn't work out, he refused to give up the fort. He raised a flag on it and announced that he and his family would be forming their own nation. A spokesperson from Britain's Ministry of Defence said: "This is ludicrous.” Michael Bates' book is Principality of Sealand: Holding the Fort, and Dylan Taylor-Lehman's book is Sealand: The True Story of the World's Most Stubborn Micronation and Its Eccentric Royal Family. Episode 250: The Crew's drinking milk plus while watching Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. This X-rated film caused a huge controversy in 1971 with its depictions of rape and ultra-violence. Some critics accused Kubrick of glorifying violence and thought the film was dangerous. Kubrick asked Warner Brothers to pulled the film from theaters in England, and the studio did until his death. Despite all the drama, the film earned 4 Oscar nominations and is now considered a masterpiece. And Malcolm McDowell gives one of the screen's best performances ever! The Crew discusses. 他挑了挑,觉得 Lord(勋爵或领主)地位有点低, Count(伯爵)又有点贵。 At 330 meters about sea-level, Cleeve Common in Gloucestershire is the highest point of the Cotswold Hills. It's become famous as the backdrop to the racing at the Cheltenham Festival, and Sybil Ruscoe first saw it from a helicopter while covering the Festival for BBC 5 Live. In this programme she re-visits the common, where thousands of years of history is etched into the landscape. From Roman stone quarries to an Iron Age meeting place...from the original racecourse to a modern golf course. She finds out about the wildlife that calls the common home - from skylarks to yellow meadow ants - and learns about the centuries old balancing act between recreation, agriculture and conservation. This week, Billy and Will focus on "A Clockwork Orange," discussing its direction, its violence and its mesmerizing lead performance by Malcolm McDowell. And guess what? It turns out the movie can still inspire some pretty strong reactions.
It's the year 2020 Jonathan (@berkreviews) and Corey (@coreyrstarr) decided they need to check a few more of Stanley Kubrick's films off their gap list. Thus, they start the year-off with the theme 2020: Janley Kubrick or Stanuary. There are a few back episodes of Movie Club where they watched Kubrick films, but there are some major ones left to see, but now in the year 2020, they will check them off their list. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 2: A Clockwork Orange (1971) Jonathan has been putting off watching A Clockwork Orange because of his knowledge of a tough scene featuring Singin' in the Rain. However, it's time to finally check this Kubrick classic off his gap list. The film stars Malcolm McDowell, Patrick Magee, and Michael Bates and the plot reads "In the future, a sadistic gang leader is imprisoned and volunteers for a conduct-aversion experiment, but it doesn't go as planned." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support
He ahí el dilema ético. Located just off the coast of the UK in international waters, the country was 'founded' when Prince Michael's dad took over an abandoned World War II defense post and turned it into a pirate radio station. How do you keep broadcasting AND keep her majesty's government off your back? Claim you're not part of the UK. And it's worked. Sealand has happily existed since 1967.Prince Michael talks with Luke and Heidi about the country- how did they form, what's their relationship like with England and does he ever get mail intended for other princes? For more information about Sealand, to become a Lord or Lady, or to just buy some really cool stamps, visit their website.

Michael Bates started his career at the grass roots as an apprentice at Swanes Nursery and went on to study horticulture. He was mentored by Japanese master landscape architect Masayoshi Uchiyama before founding Bates Landscape in 1992 - now one of Sydney's leading landscape businesses. He has created over 1,000 gardens in collaboration with the best of Sydney’s architects, designers and builders, bringing his trademark experience, energy and commitment to each and every project. Michael’s own two gardens reflect his love and mastery of landform construction, his passion for seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces, and his ability to create rich green havens in the heart of a city. Michael is also the author of The New Australian Garden, an insider's account of the journey to design, construct and plant 18 landmark gardens that represent a new movement in Australian landscape design.

Michael Bates is very knowledgeable in the field of dyslexia. We have worked together in the past and came together again here to discuss dyslexia specifically. We talked in great detail about what is it and how should the educational system be supporting dyslexic students.
Those old and new blues”.
