Clearly… he's one of us! So, we were thrilled to welcome Asher to On the Scent…Asher has also posted videos on his Instagram, where a roommate challenged him to smell randomly picked fragrances from his collection, while blindfolded. Asher completely nailed the world's most difficult vault during the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials, then went on and WON a bronze medal for Team USA during the Paris Olympics! From a Reuters news report on Asher:“Most gymnasts would prioritise packing items such as uniforms, tape and hand grips when preparing to compete on the world's biggest stage but inspirational fragrances were on top of American Asher Hong's mind heading to Paris. The 20-year-old has over 70 bottles of perfume in his collection and has brought seven with him to the Games, reflecting the recent social-media-driven rise in fragrance enthusiasm among young adults…”Asher's dedication to his sport *and* to somehow finding time for his love of fragrance is quite remarkable, and we can't wait to hear what fragrances he discovers next. As a child, Kate Ertmann starred in commercials, in soap operas and on Broadway. But acting wasn't her first love - mathematics was. She considered it to be “a balm" for her brain. And yet societal and teenage pressures made her turn away from maths.Growing up in Sweden, Sebastian Nillson Qvist loathed maths and found it a real struggle. But he still challenged himself to study it as part of a Political Science and Economics degree. It did not go well. But still, maths came back into their lives. In this episode of Sideways, we find out what led them back to mathematics and the impact it had on them. Something host Matthew Syed experienced first hand when a desire to understand inflation and economics led him back to studying for a maths A-Level in his own time and finding it actually enjoyable, rather than a chore as he had at school. We hear how determination to dominate in the sport of darts can lead to incredible mastery of mental arithmetic from Professor Marcus du Sautoy, who also suggests a novel approach to maths education which he believes could inspire and motivate children. And Field's Medal winner Professor Efim Zelmanov introduces us to a brilliant young mathematician who was killed in a duel 150 years ago but left behind a theory which keeps all online banking safe. With Kate Eartmann of katelovesmath.com, Sebastian Nillson-Qvist, Professor Marcus du Sautoy - Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Professor of Mathematics, and Professor Efim Zelmanov - Field's Medallist and Director of the Shenzhen International Center for Mathematics.Presented by Matthew Syed Producer: Marilyn Rust Series Editor: Katherine Godfrey Sound Design and Mix: Daniel Kempson Theme Tune: Ioana Selaru A Novel production for BBC Radio 4

Hi Guys,If you've arrived at Part 2 of our chat with Ishtar Azzawi, the founder of Baghdad Skate Girls, after listening to Part 1, fabulous. We hope you enjoyed it! If not, we urge you to head to Part 1 of this episode to listen to the inspiring origin story of a skateboarding community exclusively for women in Iraq. This instalment dives into Ishtar's professional sporting career in jiu-jitsu. Since starting the sport, after moving to the UAE in 2011, Ishtar has become a multi-national and international gold medallist competing under Commando Group UAE academy, and is part of the Iraqi National Team. Her recent and most recognised titles include World Pro Champion (April 2019) European Master Champion (May 2019) Grand Slam Champion (Jan 2019) and Asian Champion (2017). Ishtar discusses what she has learnt from the sport that has made her the person she is today, and anecdotes from her time in the ring and off it. We also talk about the not-so-apparent connection between skateboarding and jiu-jitsu, which aren't really at two ends of the sporting spectrum after all. “Something I always talk about is being prepared for the unexpected.”For Venezuelan BMX rider Daniel Dhers, the key to competing at the highest level is being prepared for something to go wrong at any moment – no matter how unlikely it seems. On Mind Set Win this week, Daniel reveals how truly embracing this attitude has enabled him to build a long and successful career. He explains that it's not about always having the perfect solution in stressful situations, but rather not panicking, and taking things step-by-step.Hosts Cédric and York lean into the theme of contingency planning, and introduce an exercise that helps you map out how to react when a situation throws what Daniel refers to as a “banana peel” at you. They identify three stages: green, orange and red – similar to a traffic light system.Green means that everything is going according to plan.Orange means that a minor obstacle has occurred.Red symbolises that a big obstacle has happened. What is your plan B? How do you want to react? In general, the plan of action should be oriented towards remaining calm and figuring out the next steps without disruptive emotions, like taking a deep breath or listening to your favourite song.Chapters:1. As an Olympic rower, Cath competed at three Olympic Games. Highlights include winning the World Championships in 2003 and an Olympic silver medal in 2004.   As a diplomat for over a decade, Cath specialised in conflict issues, with postings to Bosnia and Iraq, as well as leading in Whitehall on the UK civilian contribution to stabilising conflicts around the world. These experiences equipped her with leadership, negotiating skills, resilience, and the ability to deliver outstanding performance under extremely challenging circumstances. Cath has published, The Long Win: The search for a better way to succeed - that challenges the often narrow lens we have on what winning means, and sets out a new way of thinking and reframing success across business, sport and education. Cath continues to be active in supporting the next generation of sporting talent, including through support of the Youth Sport Trust, the True Athlete Project and as Chair of Love Rowing (British Rowing's Charitable Foundation).  Cath has commentated for Henley Royal Regatta and the BBC Boat Races and been invited to review the newspapers on Radio 4's Broadcasting House. Cath is an Honorary Fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge and the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and a Steward of Henley Royal Regatta. *** New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out.  You can support the mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media.
