Interview by Angela CroudaceAfter spending years as a fan, Chris Cresswell now finds himself on stage with Hot Water Music. "Being able to join one of your favourite bands is not something that happens every day," he says. The vocalist and guitarist of both Hot Water Music and The Flatliners knows what it's like to respect the music and the artists behind it. His journey into Hot Water Music, a band with a 30-year legacy, is a reminder of how passion and perseverance go hand in hand.As the band celebrates its milestone, Cresswell reflects on how its longevity is rooted in trust and communication. "The line up has always been the same… the nucleus of the bands… it's all about trusting each other," he explains. That trust is key to their success both on stage and in their personal lives, especially when life throws curveballs.A significant highlight of their 30th anniversary is the release of VOWS, which Cresswell believes resonates with old and new fans alike. "We worked our asses off on those songs… and I think we're just fired up because the band still plays for the people that love our music." One track, Menace, has already been a hit on the road, with Cresswell describing it as a "set turning point."When asked about transitioning into Hot Water Music, Cresswell shared that while there may have been some scepticism from the original fans, the reception has been overwhelmingly positive. "I was just coming from a place of such respect for this band," he notes. "I had to do it justice."For Cresswell, the journey is about more than just performing; it's about connecting with the people who made the band what it is. With VOWS marking a new chapter in Hot Water Music's history, Cresswell's story proves that music is a bridge between fans and musicians, old and new.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

His courses cover topics such as culture, immigration, and identities in an increasingly globalized world, as well as social psychology and interpersonal communication. Other teaching areas are child psychology and human development. His research interests draw on many sources, ranging from cultural psychology to cognitive science and literary theory. In this episode, we talk about theoretical psychology. We start by discussing what a theory is, and whether data themselves can yield theories. We talk about the notion of “myth”. We discuss where we derive our philosophical/ontological conditions for truth from, and why it is so hard for psychologists to look critically at their own theories. We talk about different uses of theory, and what makes for a falsifiable claim. We discuss the similarities between theories and myths. We talk about theorizing, and what it is like to be both an insider and an outsider in a particular field. Finally, we discuss how to think about the replication crisis, and the “inclusion crisis”. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA- ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Jasmine Cresswell was born in Wales and educated in London, England. Recruited by the Foreign Service, she was assigned to the British Embassy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While in Rio, she met and married Malcolm Candlish and together they immigrated to the United States where he had been offered a job with Colgate Palmolive at corporate headquarters in New York City. Malcolm's career took him to Australia, Canada and five different American states. Jasmine tagged along with their growing family. They finally settled on the West Coast of Florida where Jasmine, now widowed, is fortunate enough to live close to all four of her children, along with eight of her twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Originally intending to pursue a career in academia, this became impossible due to her frequent long-distance moves. Instead, as a lifelong lover of fiction, Jasmine decided to write a novel since a writing career could be pursued from anywhere in the world. Her first book was published by British publisher Robert Hale in 1978. Her final suspense trilogy was published by Mira Books in 2010. In the thirty intervening years she published more than seventy novels with publishers such as Berkley, Signet, Harlequin and Mira. During her active writing career, Jasmine always sought the companionship and expertise of other writers. An early member of Romance Writers of America, Jasmine was for two years the editor of Romance Writers Report, the monthly journal of the organization. In addition to eight wonderful years as a member of Rocky Mountain Fiction writers, Jasmine and four of her writer friends (including RMFW member Maggie Osborne) founded Novelists, Inc., a national organization for multi-published authors of popular fiction. In retirement, she volunteers as a Guardian ad Litem, enjoys water aerobics, reads voraciously and loves spending time with her family, especially the great grandchildren who are -- of course -- amazing. As RMFW celebrates its 40th years, we are chatting with members who were around at the very beginning and this is one of those conversations. This week's guest is Chris Cresswell. You probably know this Canadian crooner as the singer/guitarist of The Flatliners, as a guitarist in Hot Water Music or from his work as a solo artist. This year is the 20th anniversary of The Flatliners, and the band is marking the occasion with the release of its sixth full-length album — New Ruin, out Aug. 5 on Fat Wreck Chords — and with extensive touring throughout Europe and North America in the coming months. Additionally, Hot Water Music also released an album earlier this year and is embarking on a 25th anniversary tour throughout Europe and North America. In short, Cresswell is staying busy. During a rare moment at home between tours, Cresswell was gracious enough to spend an hour speaking with My First Band host Tyler Maas about those exciting modern day developments and his pre-Flatliners musical backstory. Over the course of the conversation, Cresswell talked about growing up in a Toronto suburb, his mom's musical influence on him, taking guitar lessons in the late '90s, forming Short Notice (which essentially turned into The Flatliners), the ups and downs of early tours, memorable moments from the past two decades of The Flatliners and how the opportunity to join Hot Water Music came to be. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and The Flatliners ("Souvenir").
