Calvinists are well known for their fighting, and on the rare occasions when the Synod of Dort is remembered, it is often highlighted as an example of Calvinist squabbling and dogmatism. But few know the real story, or why the battles at Dort were worth fighting. In celebration of the 400th anniversary of the Canons of Dort, pastor and scholar Daniel Hyde reminds us what Dort was all about: protecting and proclaiming the glorious gospel of grace! Dispelling harsh caricatures and whitewashed hagiographies alike, Hyde leads us on a patient journey through the history and text of the Canons, illuminating the fine-grained theological distinctions and simple Scriptural truths encapsulated in their ninety-three articles. Along the way, the reader will discover the startling catholicity and breadth of this foundational statement of Calvinism, and its remarkable pastoral value for nourishing Christian faith, hope, and love today. The timeless appeal of this classic book, written by a preacher with a worldwide ministry during the first half of the twentieth century, demonstrates the deep hunger for a saving knowledge of God present in each generation. Arthur Pink sought to give readers not just a theoretical knowledge of God but pointed them toward a personal relationship of yielding to him and living according to his biblical precepts. Chapters include: 1. The Solitariness of God 2. The Decrees of God 3. The Knowledge of God 4. The Foreknowledge of God 5. The Supremacy of God 6. The Sovereignty of God 7. The Immutability of God 8. The Holiness of God 9. The Power of God 10. The Faithfulness of God 11. The Goodness of God 12. The Patience of God 13. The Grace of God 14. The Mercy of God 15. The Love of God 16. The Wrath of God 17. The Contemplation of God "Each chapter of this classic work abounds with a high view of God that elevates the soul. Here is a brief, but profound study of the many attributes of God's perfect character. Each page is not only doctrinal study, but devotional encounter for the reader. Here is a treasure house of God-centered, God-exalting truths that transforms our worship, walk, and witness. This is Pink at his best." –Steven Lawson Song: Sovereign by Beautiful Eulogy --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rudy-gonzalez0/support

“And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the Gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, ‘In you shall all the nations be blessed.'” (Gal. 3:8) “(They) all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.” (1 Cor. 10:3–4) This covenant [of grace] was differently administered in the time of the law, and in the time of the Gospel; under the law it was administered by promises, prophecies, sacrifices, circumcision, the paschal lamb, and other types and ordinances delivered to the people of the Jews, all foresignifying Christ to come, which were for that time sufficient and efficacious, through the operation of the Spirit, to instruct and build up the elect in faith in the promised Messiah, by whom they had full remission of sins, and eternal salvation; and is called the Old Testament. (Westminster Confession of Faith, VII:V) Through signs, shadows, and types, the Son of God was present in the Old Testament to effectually apply the benefits of His grace to His Old Covenant saints. “Then Yahweh Elohim took the man and he put him in the garden of Eden in order to serve it and in order to guard it.” (Gen. 2:15; my translation) A priest-judge is a temple-guardian, commissioned by the LORD to guard His holy presence from evil and to execute judgment on anything unclean that would defile His holy temple. As we listen and read, let's keep in mind these points: 1. Adam was a Priest-Judge 2. Israel was a (Collective) Priest-Judge 3. The Levites were a Priest-Judge 4. Canaanite Conquest: Priest-Judgment in the Temple Land 5. The Ultimate Priest-Judge: Jesus Christ and His Kingdom of Priests! Please have your Bibles—the sword of the Spirit—at hand, and let's begin! And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will tabernacle among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them... And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God... I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. (Rev. 21:3, 10, 22) The Bible tells the unfolding story of a Holy God dwelling with His holy people in intimate fellowship within His holy place - that is, within His temple. The temple motif can be traced throughout Scripture in this way: God dwelt with His people in Eden; then after the Fall He graciously communed with descendants of Seth, then in the land of Canaan with the patriarchs; next, in the tabernacle; then the temple; then ultimately in the incarnation of Jesus Christ, who now dwells in His Church by His Holy Spirit and will return to dwell with His people in the fullness of His glory in the new heavens and the new earth. The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling has seized the godless: “Who among us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?” He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking on evil. (Isa. 33:14–15) Yahweh the Living God often reveals His glorious presence by means of fire throughout redemptive history. This song and chapter seeks to trace the theme of fire from Genesis 3 to Revelation, especially as it relates to God's saving and judging presence. In other words, this is a Biblical theology of fire as a means of God's revelation of Himself throughout Scripture. Death and Resurrection: Water Judgment Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. You divided the sea by your might; you broke the heads of the sea monsters on the waters. You crushed the heads of Leviathan; you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness. You split open springs and brooks; you dried up ever-flowing streams. (Ps. 74:12–15) At the Flood and the Exodus, Yahweh caused the waters of judgment to befall the wicked, while causing His people to pass through them, which is the OT background for the death and resurrection of Christ and our salvation from the Lake of Fire. Death and Resurrection: Circumcision “Therefore, circumcise your hearts, and no longer harden your necks!” (Deut. 10:16) The Old Covenant sign of circumcision doubly symbolized God's promise to cleanse the hearts of His people as well as the curse of being “cut off” from Him in judgment due to covenant breaking, both of which are fulfilled in the death and resurrection of Christ and applied to us by the Holy Spirit through our union with Him. Jesus bears the curse circumcision symbolized at the Cross, in order that we might receive the blessing of the cleansed heart that circumcision symbolized!” We are in Chapter 9 Death & Resurrection: Circumcision in the Unfolding by Timothy Brindle The Unfolding book and album present the centrality of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the overarching storyline of God's Word. “Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, ‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness.'” (Heb. 3:7–8) The wilderness theme unfolds throughout redemptive history, as God leads His people through “wilderness” situations of temptation, suffering, and the testing of their faith. The wilderness experience of Old Testament saints provides a striking blueprint for the Ultimate Obedient Wilderness Sufferer, our Lord Jesus Himself, and all those united to Him by faith, who must share in the sufferings of Christ in order that we may be glorified together with Him.” We are in Chapter 7 The Wilderness in the Unfolding by Timothy Brindle The Unfolding book and album present the centrality of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the overarching storyline of God's Word.
