Today we recap our Brurch discussion around the recount of a passage in John 21, where Jesus asks Peter if he loves him. A key takeaway from this conversation is the patience of Jesus in his relationship with Peter. Not only had Peter previously rejected him 3 times, but now when asked about his love for Jesus (agape, the highest form of love), Peter can only respond with "you know I love (phileo, a friendly/brotherly form of love) you." He asks him a second time the same question, to which Peter responds with the same answer. Then, in his final time of asking Peter if he loves him, Jesus switches from using the word "love (agape)" to "love (phileo)". . In this exchange Jesus doesn't require Peter to change his degree of expressed love, but rather shows patience and grace with him as he meets him where he is "at". . Join us as we discuss the patience of Jesus in our own lives and how it is an example and call for us to be patient with others (and ourselves) as we walk through life.
When is the best time to go to church? Church is more than a building, community or thing we do - church is covenant to share life with others through the ups and the downs. Church is about being there for other people; using our gifts, talents and resources; and sometimes it even means showing up when we don't feel like it. Join us!
What does it mean to really love one another? Can we disagree and still be friends? What is it about our society that no longer allows for disagreements, without cancelling one another? Join us today as we talk about these points.
Oooooo. It gets heated this week, folks! Where is the line when it comes to being relevant in the church? Who are we gearing our services and church "experiences" for? Is it for Christians? Or is it for unbelievers in hope that they will believe? Matt and Josh have a *passionate* discussion about this one (as they do) and Taigan gets nervous and worries this is the end of a friendship (as she does). Spoiler Alert: the friendship never ends, this is just how they are! Join usssssss.
Itttttttt's Holy Week. This week we talk about Palm Sunday and our expectations when it comes to Jesus. Are our hard stances, personal preferences and expectations of God, church, and others an indication of our spiritual maturity? Turns out, we are very passionate about this topic! Join us.
This week as we continue our conversation from last week's Brurch. As a church, what does it mean to be cold springs of hope in a tired and weary world? Join us as we talk about this a little more. . "Our churches are where we dip our tired bodies in cool springs at hope, where we retain our wholeness and humanity despite the blows." - Richard Wright, Writer, 1941 . Like this episode? This week we talk about Jeremiah 6:16 and dive a little deeper into our discussion from last week's Brurch. What do you do when God shows you the way to go? Do you ignore it and choose your own way? Do you listen and follow where is He is leading? Join us as we talk about how we personally walk this out in our own lives. If you like this podcast, don't forget to share it with your friends! . "Thus says the Lord: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.'" - Jeremiah 6:16 (ESV) . "God's Message yet again: Go stand at the crossroads and look around. Ask for directions to the old road, the tried-and-true road. Then take it. Discover the right route for your souls. But they said, ‘Nothing doing. We aren't going that way.'" - Jeremiah 6:16 (MSG) . Let's Keep Going!!! Part 2 of New Year, New View takes us into unprecedented waters. A relationship with God is something to fight for and rediscover over and over again.
New year's resolutions don't have a great track record. If we just do more of something, we think that will change everything for us. Well, it doesn't. BUT, what if focusing on deepening your faith or being committed to seeing things from a different vantage point allow us to change and progress? Taigan encourages us not to just hunker down and do more, but to be more open to what God wants to say to you in 2023.
Why is it that people get really nice during the holiday season? Matt and Josh explore the reasons they believe kindness is at the forefront Christmas.
In this episode Matt and Josh talk about miracles. While the association with miracles is always the big huge events in the Bible, in this episode they explore the beauty of looking for the everyday miracles in our lives. Hope you're encouraged.
Matt and Josh GO. ON. A. RANT about the Bible and how exciting it is! You may not think so, but you probably don't read your Bible either. The words of the Bible get illuminated by the Holy Spirit. It's that combo that brings inspiration and understanding to black and white letters (sometimes red). The Bible is more than just a religious book, it's the way God has chosen to describe himself to humanity. Maybe it's time to give it another shot. We hope you're encouraged.
Matt and Josh explore the simple idea that God loves us, even when we might not be too happy with ourselves. Often we beat ourselves up because we don't live up to a standard that God hasn't even set out for us. Why do we do this to ourselves? How can we just rest in the simple idea that God loves us, despite our imperfections. We hope you're encouraged.
Matt and Josh look at where all this is headed. With people hesitant to go to church & figuring out how their faith fits, there's lots to figure out. Join the conversations and share what you see.
Matt and Josh talk about thanksgiving and how it evokes moments of reflecting and pausing on what you are thankful for. How thankful to the Lord are you for the life you are living?
It's a new season of the South Point Sessions Podcast. We're excited to be back and keep the conversation going. This season we have new topics, specials guests, but most of all, real & authentic conversations about living a life of faith in today's world. It's going to be lots of fun!
In this episode, Matt and Josh talk about a life in the Holy Spirit & how so often we think it needs to look a certain way. And honestly... That way can look absolutely terrifying. The thing is though... That's not what living by and with the Spirit even really is suppose to look like. Some hot takes and some slain in the Spirit talk, you'll fall for it (See what we did there).
Today, Josh does an introduction of Paul's idea of the Holy Spirit. Whether you grew up in a "fire tunnel" family or in a "Too much Spirit you blow up" household, this talk brings it into perspective. Josh looks at who the Spirit is, what he does and why he is such a big deal. We hope you're encouraged.
In this episode, Matt and Taigan go after the tension that we have as Christians when it comes to being free in Jesus and yet feeling like the rules & regulations paralyze us from living. Many of us see God's commandments as limitations on our lives, but what if instead of limitations, we saw them as guidelines that are meant to live purpose filled lives. Taigan tells a very powerful story about her grandmother that you won't want to miss.
Have you ever had a day where you just felt like you'd never get better as a Christian person. You know, a day where you weren't proud of who you were or where you did not live up to your complete potential as a follower of Jesus? Yeah, so have we! Pastor Matt takes us through chapter 7 of Romans and shows us that even on our worst days, there is still HOPE. We HOPE You are encouraged.
We all want to feel like we are living lives of freedom and yet... So often we feel like we've hit a dead end. Josh opens up Romans 6 and dives into what Paul the apostle has to say about the complexities of living a life of freedom and why it is SOOOO worth it.
This past weekend at our all church gathering, Matt asked everyone they they wanted the ripple effect of their life to be? So... What is it? What legacy are you wanting to leave behind after you're gone? How do you want people to remember you? These may feel like eerie questions, but... What's the answer? How does your faith play into all of it? So often we play the comparison game and honestly... It's burning many of us out. So, what's the way forward? Well, you'll just have to listen!
This week, Matt and Josh talk about Romans 4 and about Abraham his life of faith. The reality is that this man was not perfect and did not have it all together. BUT, everything he got from God was because he trusted that what God said he would do... He would do. Abraham just trusted. When it comes to faith, spirituality & a relationship with God, we often feel like if all we do is TRUST God, then we might be faulted for being spiritually lazy. So, to earn our place with God, we trust and do a lot of things to justify our position. This couldn't be further from what the intention of the gospel is all about. Your relationship with God isn't justified because of you, It's justified because of HIM. Also, they talk about basketball... The best sport on the planet. We hope you enjoy!
Happy father's day!!! We hope all dad's have an incredible day of being celebrated. Today we talk about another dad named Abraham. Paul uses him as an example to the Romans about how faith in Jesus is not about what you DO, but is about how you TRUST him. Josh takes the time to really spell this out for us and to explain the importance of FAITH being the foundation of, well... Our faith! We hope you enjoy your Sunday and Get. Some. Rest.
Karen's have taken the internet by storm in the last few years. We dislike them, we just want them to worry about their own lives. Here's a thought though... What if the modern day church is suffering from the spirit of Karen? Always looking to make sure that the rest of the world is submitting to our sense of righteousness, but are never opened to being called out for our own actions. It's the old log and plank in the eye scenario. Matt and Josh take the time to look at Romans 3 and talk about the need to be gracious with the world that surrounds us because well... Jesus did it. If your name is Karen, we're sorry.
From Guilt to Grace: Can we all admit... There IS something wrong with us? While there is SOOO much good inside of humanity, there are some things that scare us about ourselves. Like when you see a wild and disrespectful thread on a social media platform where people feel brave enough to spew dissension and hatred, or when you turn on the news and see another tragedy at the hands of another human. It can be overwhelming sometimes. We gasp at all of this because we know that deep down, we have things inside of us that could come out like this too. So, we attempt to prove to everyone else that none of that is in US. We make sure that what is on the outside, how we present ourselves distracts the people in our lives, our friends, our coworkers and our families that we're better than we really know we are. In today's episode, Pastor Matt helps us understand that the only way we can quit playing this facade is... Jesus.
In this episode, Matt and Josh tackle the tension many Christians have when it comes to not judging others. Whether its a pastime of yours or it's something you're trying to nip in the bud, judging others is always a statement about you more than it is about the person being judged. Paul reminds us in Romans 2 that God isn't overlooking the stuff in our lives just because we're great judgers. How do we spend more time working on ourselves and less time focusing on the faults of others. You'll love this episode.
Pointing fingers at other people's shortcomings often makes us feel good temporality because it makes us feel just a little better about where we fall short. BUT... The truth is that, this kind of attitude is actually robbing many people of the opportunities that God wants to give them to 1) get better and 2) live the lives they so desperately want.
Letting your life speak is a scary thing because... What if it has nothing good to say? As desperate as some followers of Jesus might be to say something to someone about their faith, what they don't realize is that their lives have the power to make the words with good or bad news to those listening. If we are convinced that it's good news that points people to Jesus, why then don't we focus on not only what we preach, but what we practice too? On this episode, we recap Romans chapter 1 and all the goodness from this past weekend with special guest Pastor Paul "Calves" Martens. You'll love this guy!
Watching people, people watch is such a fun activity. It says a lot about not only the one being watched, but also the watcher. After this past week's message on Colossians 4, Matt and Josh recap just how important it is to live out your life & faith in an authentic, as well as humble way. We also dissect the last two witnesses (doctors) in the Johnny Depp trial... What a time to be alive! Enjoy!
It may sound creepy, but someone is watching you? Maybe not because you're wearing a new outfit or anything... They're watching HOW you live your life. In this last chapter of Colossians, Pastor Matt dives into Paul's encouragement to live a life worth watching.
We love a good glow up story... Don't we? On this episode Matt and Josh discuss Colossians 3 and what a spiritual glow up looks like. God wants you to go from Steve Urkel To Stefan Urquelle (See YouTube link for reference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sud1fak_65Q)
Colossians 3 is all about the GLOW UP! Paul reminds those reading his letter that they should stop "putting on" old habits & attitudes... They're SO your past life! Christians are told that they should probably stop doing certain things, but often the "WHY?" is not clear. Josh takes a deep dive into this in today's 5 minute message. Enjoy!
In this episode, Matt and Josh explore Colossians 2 and look at why going to God FIRST can keep you from a lot of heartache. This episode is Oprah approved (Not really).
Quit it with the self help! When things get hard, who do you run to? In Colossians 2, Paul finds out that the church there is running to all kinds of different things in difficulty... Just not Jesus. Pastor Matt Goes after our leaning towards self help and why that's going to ultimately leave us still looking for someone to come to our rescue.
In this episode, Matt and Josh explore Colossians 1 and look at why a basic, solid faith is SOOO beautiful. It's a good one B'Y!
Sometimes when things get too complicated, that should be our cue to get back to basics. In this Chapter Paul makes it clear that Jesus is the centre of everything and that growing in your faith and becoming mature in Jesus is less complicated than we've made it! Understand the book of Colossians: Colossians Overview Scripture for the day- Colossians 1: 26-29 This mystery has been kept in the dark for a long time, but now it's out in the open. God wanted everyone, not just Jews, to know this rich and glorious secret inside and out, regardless of their background, regardless of their religious standing. The mystery in a nutshell is just this: Christ is in you, so therefore you can look forward to sharing in God's glory. It's that simple. That is the substance of our Message. We preach Christ, warning people not to add to the Message. We teach in a spirit of profound common sense so that we can bring each person to maturity. To be mature is to be basic. Christ! No more, no less. That's what I'm working so hard at day after day, year after year, doing my best with the energy God so generously gives me (The Message).
HOPE! We all love it, we all need it, but... We rarely know where to find it. Don't get us wrong, we know it's in Jesus, but what happens when you faith feels like a ground hog day? In this episode Matt and Josh talk about how hope is not found in an institution, in a program or event a feeling. It's found in the person of Jesus.
Last weekend we had our community Easter event and it was a hit. Last night South Point had a dance party and tomorrow is the launch our Brurch! So many things being done differently and you know what??? WE ARE LOVING IT!!!
In this episode, Matt and Josh talk about what is coming up for South Point in the next few weeks and they continue to talk about the "I AM" series. Josh talks about Jesus saying he's the way, the truth & the life & then shares a story about how he almost got punched by a congregation member. It's a whole church meets UFC vibe. You'll love it.
South Point was established as a church for those who don't like church. Throughout this last season, Pastor Matt and our leaders have felt that we've perhaps gone off course from that original vision. In this episode, Pastor Matt addresses where we are currently and where we are headed. Buckle up! This is going to be such a great ride together!
