The Avs are faced with elimination after everything that could go wrong, went wrong in Game 5 vs. Dallas in a 6-2 loss. With all the usual excuses gone for the Avalanche, it is now time to put up or shut up. There's no time to talk about 'when' or 'if' anymore with this team, they have to 'be', or we're in for a long offseason with uncomfortable questions about the players who haven't pulled their weight in this series. Here why's the Avs are going to get it done. Now that was much better. The Avalanche absolutely dominated the Stars in Game 4, playing as close to a perfect game as you can get to tie the series at 2-2 heading back to Dallas for Game 5. Best of all, Gabe Landeskog scores his first goal since 2022, and has shattered all expectations in his return by being one of the best players on the ice in both games. If the Avalanche keep up this level of play down the stretch in this series, they're going to be in great shape. Can we expect to see more of Game 3 or Game 4 the rest of the series? That was embarrassing. The Avs got Gabe Landeskog back after over 1,000 days out of the lineup, but couldn't muster the energy necessary to close this one out and get him a victory in his return. The powerplay goes 0/6 including multiple late game powerplays that completely fell flat, which made all of the difference. Game 4 has now become a crossroads where they can get back in this series before heading to Dallas, or for the second straight year lose it all on home ice. This series is tied at 1-1 following a 4-3 overtime loss in Game 2 to the Dallas Stars. The Avs controlled most of play, but a lackluster third period and a critical mistake in overtime cost them the chance to take a 2-0 lead back to Denver. This is going to be a back and forth series, so this can't be a emotional hangover going into a critical pair of games back home with Landeskog's return potentially on the horizon. The Avalanche take a 1-0 series lead over the Dallas Stars on the back of a statement 5-1 victory on the road to open the series, highlighted by Mackenzie Blackwood's sensational performance in his playoff debut. The Avs looked like the better team for most of this game, stifling the Stars at even strength and pulling away late off the back off 2 goals and 3 points from Nathan MacKinnon, and points from all but six skaters in the lineup. While there is room for improvement, this was an incredibly encouraging opening performance from Colorado, but can they keep it up and come home with a 2-0 series lead? The playoffs are here, and it's time for one of the most important playoff series of the MacKinnon/Makar era. This rematch of the Dallas Stars has everything you could possibly hope for in a playoff series between the rematch of last year, the return of Landeskog, and taking on Mikko Rantanen for the first time. Are the Avs better equipped to beat Dallas than they've been in the past with their new depth? What are the biggest X-Factors for both sides? Is Dallas going to be healthy enough to stay in this series? Can the Avs finally overcome this Dallas team and wash away the sting of the last two series? The most eventful regular season in recent memory has finally come to a close, with a completely different team than the one we started with in October. The regular season for the Avalanche is over, and a first round playoff matchup with the Dallas Stars is finally locked in for this weekend. More importantly, could the Avalanche finally have Gabe Landeskog back in the lineup after a successful conditioning sting with the Colorado Eagles? Is the three year wait for the captains return almost over at last? What are some positives to take away from the Avs final games of the season? Finally, recognizing the once in a lifetime moment of Alex Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky's all time goals record. The Avalanche have made the playoffs for the eighth straight season, the second longest active streak in the league. Cale Makar became the first defenseman in 15 years to hit thirty goals in a single season, marking just another milestone in what's going to be another award winning season for the league's best defenseman. Times like this are just a reminder to savor what we've got here while we have it, because this Golden Age of Avs hockey won't last forever. We've made it to April, the final stretch of the regular season before the playoffs. A near perfect game against the Kings was followed up with mental lapses that allowed games against St. Louis and Calgary to get away from them in the third period, bringing up some worry bad habits late in the season. But if they can just clean up a couple of things, this team is very close to perfection. What can they do to avoid allowing these third period habits to seep into the playoffs? The Avs survived a late comeback in Montreal and rolled over the Red Wings to keep up their winning ways and start a new three game winning streak, on top of a ten game winning streak on home ice. With just ten games to go in the regular season, Colorado is rolling at just the right time. However, is their potential path to the Stanley Cup in the playoffs potentially the toughest Stanley Cup path ever?Send questions to the mailbag here: https://forms.gle/7ytuJfsiTr1x3VDt6 Follow Griffin on Twitter: @GRYoungs Follow Christian on Twitter: @Christian_Bolle
The Avs continue to round in the form post trade deadline and play like the best team in the NHL. Despite being screwed over by a falling official in Toronto to snap their point streak, the Avs bounced right back in Ottawa with a 5-1 domination as lines get involved and the defense continues to shut everything down. With the Avs playing this well, where do they rank among Stanley Cup contenders? Finally, answering your mailbag questions! The Avs defeated the Mikko Rantanen Stars in Mikko's return to Colorado, and looked really good while doing so. They have still not lost in regulation since the trade deadline, are on a nine game point streak, and have closed the gap for home ice in the first round. It's Stanley Cup or bust in Colorado now as the Avalanche go all in at the trade deadline by acquiring Brock Nelson, Charlie Coyle, and Erik Johnson. These moves finish off what is likely the biggest in-season retooling of a Stanley Cup contender we've ever seen. How much better equipped are the Avs to win the Stanley Cup right now? Was it worth the high prices the Avalanche paid to make these moves? Do those high prices matter when you have MacKinnon and Makar in their primes? Also, Mikko Rantanen is traded from Carolina to Dallas with an 8 year extension and sets himself as the villain in Colorado for the rest of his career. The Avs will likely meet Dallas in Round 1, is that one of the biggest series in franchise history? The Avalanche have made another trade, acquiring Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey from the New York Rangers in exchange for Calvin De Haan, Jusso Parissinen, and a 2nd/4th round pick in this years draft. Where does Lindgren fit into the lineup, and is this even a good deal for the Avs? The Avs also dominated the first two games of their six game homestand after the return of Val Nichushkin to the lineup, outscoring New Jersey and Minnesota 10-3 in their wins. The Avs are running out of time and excuses after returning from the Four Nations flat with losses to Nashville and St. Louis, complete with only two goals, and zero from their forwards. The depth is a huge problem, and they cannot win with the utter lack of production they are getting from anyone outside of their top line. Worse than that, the effort levels are nowhere close where they need to be for a team that should not feel secure in their playoff spot. The Four Nations Championship between Canada and USA delivered in every conceivable way on Thursday, and brought us one of the greatest games of our lifetime with the most eyes hockey has had on it in over 15 years. Unfortunately the USA couldn't overcome their own poor lineup choices and fall in overtime, but MVP MacKinnon and Makar helped bring Gold home for Canada, which is great for the narratives. USA has serious roster issues to fix going into the Olympics next year, because these Canada/USA games are now coin flips, and they need their actual best players. Overall what a tournament, and what a massive success for the sport. The Avs answer the bell in Alberta, defeating both the Flames and Oilers on back to back nights to head into the Four Nations break with some positive momentum. The top line domination reignited the offense for nine goals in two games, and seven points for MacKinnon, and begging the question of when the best player in the world conversation needs to be had. Can this new tandem of Blackwood and Wedgewood help this team start rattling off wins? How much does it hurt to give up Kovalenko? On the game side, the Avs put up a perfect road game on the second half of a back to back against New Jersey for their best game of the year, and are suddenly looking like a far more complete team with a chance to finish the trip strong in Pittsburgh. We've got a lot to catch up on, so let's get started. The Avalanche completed a 4-0 comeback against the Buffalo Sabres, which began with Georgiev giving up 4 goals on 8 shots again. However newly acquired backup Scott Wedgewood came into relief and galvanized the Avs to victory, washing out the taste of two disappointing performances againt Dallas and Edmonton. It's at a critical point with Georgiev, and after moving Justus Annunen for Wedgewood, the same might need to be done with Georgiev now. It's been the same story over the last several games, where a depleted Avalanche team puts out a strong performance and gets goalie'd out of a better fate. The Avalanche have reached the first ten game checkpoint of the season at 5-5-0, an even .500. Just like that, the Avalanche are back to .500 after a four game win streak and sweeping the three game road trip with Seattle and Utah in their first ever visit to Delta Center. It's not much of a coincidence that since starting Justus Annunen in goal, the Avs have looked significantly better, playing with more confidence and giving up significantly less goals. Is he the starter now? Of course nothing can stay good, as Ross Colton could be added to the injured list now, but Kovalenko and Ivan Ivan continue to impress.
