If you follow our Twitter page, then you know we have been counting down the 12 weeks Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog has been out, looking forward to his return likely in January. We saw the beginning stages of that return yesterday as Landeskog put on skates and.... glided around the ice. Though he likely will be out the month of December, it is at least nice to see the Captain back out on the ice. Speaking of December, the Avalanche play a lot in the final month of 2022. But the good part is they play more at home than away. We take a look at the schedule. All that plus Instagram questions! Tune in and subscribe! The Avalanche get beat up in their final two games of the New York road trip, getting shutout 1-0 by the New Jersey Devils, and blowing a 3-0 lead to the New York Islanders in what will hopefully be a wake up call for a team meandering through October. Is the Devils game one of the worst, most uneventful game of all time? With no Nichushkin, Landeskog, or Helm, the Avs depth issues are on full display and clearly unsustainable with the fourth line playing five minutes a game. Is it worth being upset this early in the season, or will it be the same story as last season? Also, finally talking about new NHL reverse retros jerseys. Hosted by Kyle Knopp and Matthew Zator, The Hockey Writers Podcast is where your favourite THW contributors discuss the hottest topics around the NHL and hockey world, five days a week (Monday to Friday). In today's episode, Matthew is joined by Jacob Strozyk (Buffalo Sabres) and Mike Fink (New York Islanders) to discuss the long-term injuries to Gabriel Landeskog, Aaron Ekblad and Jake Muzzin and whether the Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers or Toronto Maple Leafs will make trades to shore up their lineup while they're out. Jacob talks about the Sabres' strong start to the season and the surprisingly solid goaltending they are receiving from 41-year-old Craig Anderson and his 1B Eric Comrie, who stole a win against the Edmonton Oilers. Mike then touches on the Islanders' plethora of scoring from the blue line and how it has carried them to a 2-1 start to 2022-23. Finally, the crew gives their predictions for the 12 games on the NHL schedule and their usual articles of the day from THW. We'll start with the bad news. We knew Gabriel Landeskog would miss the beginning of the season we just didn't know how much time. Now we know. Landeskog and the Avalanche opted for arthroscopic knee surgery and will miss the next 12 weeks. If all goes well in his recovery, we can expect the Captian back in January. On the ice, the Avalanche came out and were dominated by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1st period. But as the game went on, the Avalanche started to get looks and would tie it up and force OT.....which lasted all of 30 seconds. Chris and Kyle break it all down! Tune in and subscribe! The Colorado Avalanche are back in action tonight against division rival Minnesota Wild and they will look to continue the beginning of the season struggles the Wild have found themselves in. Two games played, two losses while giving up 7 goals in both games. We know the Avalanche offensive capabilities so they are going to want to keep those Wild struggles going. We also got an update on the injury to captain Gabriel Landeskog......kind of. Coach Jared Bednar stated the injury is "concerning" and is not exactly sure of a time table for his return. Not the words you want to hear from a head coach about his captain. Finally, we take a quick look at the week ahead for the Avs. Four total games, and yes, another back to back. Nathan MacKinnon is heading into the 2022-2023 season on the last year of the most team-friendly contract in sports. We all know a big pay increase is heading his way but now Adrian Dater is reporting MacKinnon is looking to become the highest paid player in the league. His timing could not be better as the league's salary cap is expected to increase significantly after this coming season. So a record-breaking deal is not out of the question. As for another Avalanche player looking for a his pay day, Nazem Kadri might have found it with the New York Islanders. Rumore is the two sides are finalizing a 7 year $7 million AAV contract. If that is indeed the final amount, why did the Avs not want to go that high for Kadri? Is it the dollar amount, the term, or both? Sandy and Shawn are joined by our own DMac to break down all aspects of the Avs' dominant win over the Preds. He thinks that the lines are great as they are, he doesn't think Landeskog needs to come back up to the top line. They are also joined by our own Mat Smith who believes that the Avs were waiting for this moment. Sandy and Shawn think that the Avalanche could and maybe should put Kurtis MacDermid into the lineup for Game 2 to keep the Predators in check. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In a two part episode, the Avalanche had an eventful couple of days, starting with an excellent effort against the Carolina Hurricanes, before getting jobbed at the very end with some questionable officiating and shutout for the first time this season in a 2-0 loss. Also, Gabe Landeskog undergoes knee surgery for a lingering injury, likely keeping him out for the rest of the season. Can the Avalanche do a little extra at the trade deadline with the extra cap space? Also, Sam Girard will miss four weeks with a lower body injury, and the defense looks decimated as a result. Finally, Pavel Francouz signs a two-year contract extension, ensuring the Avs at least have a backup for the next two years. In part two (56:44), the Avalanche put forth an outstanding performance and shutout the Calgary Flames to get back in the win column, with Darcy Kuemper posting a 46 save shutout. Everybody stepped up their game with no Landeskog or Girard, and if the Avalanche play like this in the playoffs, they're going to win the Stanley Cup. Also, is Nathan MacKinnon actually going to get to 30 goals this season after having 3 in January? Finally, with the West as a weak as it is, there's never been a better time to go all in at the trade deadline. Our Monday NHL Insider, the former HNIC exec. and co-host of the Bob McCown Podcast, John Shannon joined Matt and Blake. Talked about the very latest he has heard with the Vancouver Canucks. Says there are no leaks coming out of this organization. There is something to be made of the Boeser talk. Hasn't heard much on Garland other than the obvious with his contract. Talked about how he is hearing more on Tyler Myers. The one name in the last 5 or 6 days that has surfaced more than Garland. Talked about three-team trades and what brings them about. Talked about Landeskog out till further notice and if it is at all tactical to keep from cap circumvention. Says that this is the one year COL has to win it. They will look a whole lot different next season. Talked about what EDM needs. They need a LD veteran. Talked about the Heritage Classic. Thinks they still have a place. Good crowds. They aren't national events. They are for the two teams that are playing. Super home games.    Our Canucks reporter, Jeff Paterson joined us after a busy weekend for the team. Talked about missing Elias Pettersson. Talked about what JT Miller might have said to rally the troops on Friday. JPat puts the slow starts on the players. Nothing Bruce can do when the puck drops. Talked about the leadership roll that Miller is playing and if he is at all stepping on the toes of Bo Horvat. Suggested that Bruce is also playing into this, as well. Talked about how long the Canucks should consider resigning Miller to. Noted the importance of him turning 29 today. Talked more about EP40 and when we could see him back with the full group.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
