Jason Gregor is back with another offseason edition of The DFO Rundown and today, he was joined by Michael Russo of The Athletic. He's spent the last number of years covering the Minnesota Wild but has been working in hockey for a lot longer than that. The guys started the pod off by talking a little bit about Russo's career and how he ended up in ‘The State of Hockey'.From there, they got into the current situation with the Kirill Kaprizov and the Wild. He's eligible for an extension and there's no doubt that the Wild would love to lock him up, but is he open to a max-term contract? Russo gave some insight into that before getting to another contract situation that GM Bill Guerin is currently dealing with in Marco Rossi, who is an RFA.They then talked about how certain offseason moves could change the balance of power in the Central Division. There are some serious question marks around teams like the Jets and Avalanche meanwhile the Stars are going to get a full year out of Mikko Rantanen, which could change things. The Utah Mammoth are also quickly becoming everyones favourite underdog. GM Bill Armstrong had himself a very busy summer, but did he do enough to make them a playoff team? They also talked about Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks and the Nashville Predators chances of bouncing back after a miserable season.Tyler then popped in for Fill in the Blank, where he asked the guys about who will start Game 1 for the Edmonton Oilers, Mitch Marner's ceiling in Vegas, and if they think there could be any surprise teams who get to 100-points.3:50 - Kaprizov & a short-term deal9:50 - Will Marco Rossi in Minnesota?15:05 - The Central offseason20:25 - Everyone loves Utah24:05 - Can the Hawks take a step?28:40 - Can the Preds rebound?33:10 - Fill in the BlankWant to hear more from Jason and the entire DFO team? Tom Ackerman breaks down the Cardinals' hot streak—eight straight wins and a sweep of the Nationals—highlighting standout performances from pitchers like Fetty, Palante, Gray, and Liberatore. Despite sitting just one game out of first in the Central Division, the team faces record-low attendance at Busch Stadium. Ackerman also examines the growing fan presence at Battle Hawks games versus low turnout in other UFL markets. Plus, a deeper conversation on social media toxicity, including the threats faced by Lance McCullers and why some athletes like Max Homa are leaving platforms altogether.
The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 5-2 decision to the Dallas Stars on Sunday and now trail the best-of-7 Central Division final 2-1. A controversial goal was at the heart of the third-period woes and we discuss in great detail.

The playoff picture in the Western Conference is officially set as both the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild punched their tickets to the postseason earlier in the week. With that, Jason and Frank previewed each of the four first round series that we'll get and gave their picks for each one. Before they got into the playoff talk, they quickly talked about a few teams who's 2024-25 seasons were disappointments including the Nashville Predators and Detroit Red Wings. They also talked about the San Jose Sharks season, which resulted in another last place finish but the guys talked about whether or not this year was actually a success. They then got into the two playoff series in the Central Division, starting with the much anticipated Stars and Avalanche matchup. The Stars are limping into the playoffs while the vibes in Colorado are immaculate with Captain Gabriel Landeskog expected to return to the lineup. Everyone seems to be picking the Avs, but are the Stars being a little overlooked? They also talked about the chances that the Winnipeg Jets make it a relatively short series against the St. Louis Blues. Can Hellebuyck find his form in the playoffs? Was the Blues heater a sign that they're a legit threat to go on a run?Tyler then popped in for Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about what the Flames could do this summer, Rick Tocchet's future in Vancouver, the chances of the Predators moving a big contract, and what wild card teams could pull off an upset. From there, they got into the the Golden Knights vs Wild series, which both Gregor and Frank actually agreed on.They wrapped with a preview of ‘Oilers vs Kings Part 4' and talked about whether or not this year's Kings team is better positioned than ones in the past to finally slay the dragon and take down Connor McDavid and the Oilers.1:30 - Disappointing seasons6:50 - Are the Sharks getting closer?11:00 - Stars vs Avalanche21:30 - Jets vs Blues25:15 - Buy or Sell39:10 - Golden Knights vs Wild46:40 - Oilers vs KingsWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? He then shifts focus to the Western Conference, discussing the challenge the Los Angeles Kings present and how the Central Division might shake out. Before the interview, Dan and Shawn break down the frantic finish in the Eastern Conference, focusing on the race for the second wild card between the Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets. They agree that whichever team clinches the spot could give the Washington Capitals trouble in the first round.
