It's Episode 286, and on this episode, LAFC finally brings home a trophy! It's not quite the one we were hoping for, but don't worry! We play for that in just 7 days! LAFC is on to the MLS Cup Final after defeating Houston in the Western Conference Final, 2-0!A near miss by Carlos Vela and a stunning cross from Hector Herrera punctuated a very entertaining first 10 minutes or so, but then LAFC's defense went to work, stifling Houston for the remainder of the first half. Just before the halftime whistle, a perfect Carlos Vela corner finds the head of Giorgio Chiellini. His initial effort was saved, but playoff goal scorer turned hero Ryan Hollingshead was there to put it away to give LAFC the lead just before halftime. In the second half, Houston certainly had a lot of the ball, but nothing to show for it. LAFC's defense put up yet another goose egg, but not without the help of Ilie Sanchez taking a ball off our own goal line. A late own goal provided the margin as LAFC clinch a berth in the MLS Cup Final! It's on to Columbus!

He has worked alongside some of the most elite players, coaches, & executives. The Seattle Sounders: Jordan Morris, Cristian Roldan, Raul Ruidiaz, Nico Lodiero, Nouhou, Yeimar, Joao Paulo, and Brian Schmetzer. Lumen Field. Turf. Ted Unkel. Chris Penso. The deck was stacked with reasons why LAFC shouldn't win. Why LAFC shouldn't advance to their third Western Conference Final in our 6-year history. Why the Black and Gold faithful would be rueing another missed opportunity. Well, somewhere along the way, nobody in Black and Gold got the memo as LAFC wins an absolute nail-biter, 1-0, on the road at Lumen Field, over the hated Sounders! LAFC will host the Western Final at BMO on Saturday, December 2nd!Denis Bouanga did it yet again, scoring in the 30' for the match's only goal. From minute one through the end of the 8 minutes of second-half stoppage time, LAFC's defense, led by Maxime Crepeau between the pipes, Giorgio Chiellini at center back, and a huge play by Timothy Tillman, put on an absolute masterclass. What a match! Also on this episode, former LAFC players make their mark on this year's MLS Cup and USL Playoffs, the young kids of LAFC2 and the Academy make their mark on a few youth national team camps, and Filly apparently tries hard NOT to make marks on his nice pants while watching the match. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and we hope you enjoy Episode 285. It's one of our favorite episodes of the year!

Jake Fischer and Dan Devine talk about some of the biggest results and storylines coming out of a full slate of NBA basketball on Wednesday night.00:00 - HELLO FRIENDS!00:53 - Robert Williams' knee injury04:30 - Jamal Murray hamstring injury07:40 - LeBron vs. Dillon Brooks11:20 - Wembanyama at MSG21:10 - New York Knicks25:15 - 76ers top Celtics38:20 - Panic time for the Kings and Lakers?49:40 - Hot JakesAfter a night full of excellent NBA action, Jake Fischer and Dan Devine got together for another episode of No Cap Room to talk about all of the news and notes coming out of it.First, Robert Williams' injury is a bummer for the Trail Blazers and is probably being celebrated by the Boston Celtics front office that didn't trust Williams to stay healthy. Jamal Murray's hamstring injury will only keep him out for a few weeks, but that might be good enough for their young bench players to get a good look on the floor.Dillon Brooks, now on the Rockets, did not hesitate to call out LeBron James before their matchup with the Lakers. Jake argues that more players should talk like Dillon Brooks does, and Dan argues that Brooks is a good player that also makes the league more fun.Victor Wembanyama made his debut at Madison Square Garden against the Knicks, and he found it difficult to get his offense going. Jake was there and is still in awe of the young man's ability to keep his composure under the bright lights of New York City.Speaking of the Knicks, they're pretty good! Their defense is great and there are signs that their offense is not as bad as it appears. But will they find the superstar to build around any time soon? The Philadelphia 76ers beat the Boston Celtics, leading Jake to believe that the team might search for a solid starter in the trade market instead of cashing in all of their chips for another superstar. This team is actually good! Also good is the Boston Celtics, and the guys take some time to defend Jaylen Brown from the haters. Both the Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Lakers are off to slow starts, and dealing with injured star players, leading to the question of which team you'd rather be a part of right now. Jake weighs in, and Dan does his best to defend the other side. Finally, we get to the Hot Jakes of the week, including a Western Conference Finals that Jake is dying to see and some opinions on the coated idea of the NBA extending out the Draft to two days.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports PodcastsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Lakers kick off the 2023-24 NBA season tonight in Denver, and nobody on either side wants to make it a big thing, or add significance to the game, or talk about bad blood or certainly not to call it a rivalry. Which, as it turns out, is the best sign it's a rivalry. And after all, the Nuggets -- especially head coach Mike Malone -- spent plenty of time talking about the Lakers in the wake of their title run. The Lakers had knocked them out a couple years earlier, too. And while they tried not to make a thing of it, the Lakers (from Austin Reaves to Darvin Ham) have had some stuff to say about the stuff that was said. In short, yeah, it's a game that means something a little more for both teams. WHICH IS AWESOME! The Lakers have been woefully short on fun rivalries over the last few years, whether because of down seasons or up seasons that came in the midst of pandemics and thin-to-non-existent crowds. Now, though? This season has the potential to drive something like LA vs. Denver to new heights, and create plenty of new rivalries, because the Western Conference is an endless string of marquee matchups, and the Lakers have the potential to be good for a few years. Just one reason to look forward to this year. Another? The Lakers have a great chance, it seems to at least duplicate and perhaps exceed their results from last year. A Western Conference Finals run is a real possibility, and something past that, too. But what about other predictions? What about season awards for Anthony Davis? MVP? DPOY? Austin Reaves for Most Improved? What about D'Angelo Russell for the same? Darvin Ham, Coach of the Year? We break it down. Finally... some numbers about Davis, LeBron and the Lakers in the fourth quarter last year that will likely shock you. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers vs. Denver: A real rivalry brewing. SEGMENT 2: Bold predictions for 2023-24! SEGMENT 3: Last year's fourth quarters, by the numbers. Jim is joined by Kelly Dwyer, NBA writer and pioneer of the NBA blogosphere, to break down the hall of fame candidacy of former NBA guard Jeff Hornacek. First, Jim and Kelly cover Hornacek's unique offensive game, as well as his elite shooting numbers (6:46). Next, they talk about the 1990 Western Conference Finals, how Hornacek reminds Kelly of Jerry West (you read that right), and attempt to rank Hornacek among the best shooting guards of the 1990s (12:46). Finally, they have a discussion around advanced metrics and their importance when reviewing a player's career, before making a final call on whether or not Hornacek deserves to be inducted into the HOF (27:28).
Laker Film Room - Dedicated to the Study of Lakers Basketball
Opening night is nearly here and the Lakers begin their season with a rematch of the Western Conference Finals vs. the Nuggets. Pete and Darius preview the game, focusing on how the Lakers offensive shifts to more five-out looks can help them vs. the Nuggets defense, the challenges of their own transition defense vs. Denver, and the ever present problem of defending Jokic in the halfcourt. And then later, the guys discuss the mindset of the players heading into this game and how D'Angelo Russell's play looms large as a potential pivot point. Learn more about your ad choices. Cohosts Sandra and Imman interview former NBA referee Tim Donaghy to discuss his 2007 betting Scandal. This episode was recorded MONTHS & MONTHS (not weeks ago) as part of an ongoing series we want to have, diving into the NBA's 2007 betting Scandal. Tim Donaghy, a former NBA referee from 1994 to 2007, was at the center of a scandal in 2007 when it was revealed that he had been betting on NBA games, including ones he officiated. He pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and received a 15-month prison sentence. The scandal sent shockwaves through the NBA and its fanbase, as it raised concerns about a referee compromising the integrity of the game. But there's a larger story here, one that goes beyond Donaghy. It's a story about the league's overall integrity, from the infamous Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals to the biases allegedly present in the NBA's officiating policies. In our upcoming interview with Tim Donaghy, he shares his criticisms of the NBA's officiating and asserts that the league is biased toward certain teams and players. He claims that that is how he picked winners in his bets. However, it's important to note that despite his claims, and the claims of the NBA that there is no evidence of Donaghy betting on his games, many do believe that he allegedly did. We acknowledge the doubts about his credibility, and we approach this conversation as part of a larger series. Our interview aims to unravel the complexities of the scandal and gain a comprehensive understanding of the NBA, its systems, and the delicate balance between competition and integrity. This is not an endorsement of Donaghy's claims but an exploration of a piece of the larger story. Again, this episode is part of a broader series that dives deeper into the NBA's biggest off-court stories. In the final episode, we'll interview Tim Livingston from the hit podcast series "Whistleblower." So get ready for an intriguing discussion, where we not only explore the scandal but also have some fun talking with a referee. Plus, we'll pick Donaghy's brain about the NBA's embrace of gambling in 2023 and his thoughts on the steps the league has taken to prevent future scandals. Learn more about your ad choices. The Lakers kick off the regular season Tuesday in Denver, and after a strong training camp have very few questions of significance still in need of an answer. Over the weekend, Darvin Ham said that Taurean Prince would start against the Nuggets at small forward. He did leave the door open to a dinged up Jarred Vanderbilt, however, to re-enter the starting lineup once he's recovered from the heel injury that has cost him most of training camp. But while for many teams, "Who is in the starting lineup?" feels like a doozy of an unanswered question, on this squad, less so. The Prince lineups have been great in the preseason. Plenty of early evidence they work well. The Vanderbilt lineups helped the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals last season. Two good options, it seems. Most of the bench questions feel pretty minor. It's easy to see how someone like Gabe Vincent fits in, even while he's missed a lot of time. Hachimura is a clean and comfortable fit coming off the bench. Maybe there are some remaining questions about how much Max Christie is going to play? But overall, that's not a huge one. About the only question that has to do with fit is one with Christian Wood and Jaxson Hayes. Having been given a simple, clear directive on how he's supposed to operate, Hayes had a great camp and probably earned more early minutes than expected. That clear role, that generally doesn't involve him having the ball or plays called for him, seems to be a good fit and helps explain the big energy and positive vibes he's brought on the floor. Wood has had a tougher time. His role is harder to bring along, because he's a scorer who is expected to create and take shots. But from where? What kind? What's the right balance? It's a first world problem, no question, and while the Lakers need to solve it, on the grand scale of BIG ISSUES this one is pretty minor for a contending squad. And there's lots of time for everyone to get it right. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Reflecting on 19 years covering the Lakers, and the positive vibes around this season. SEGMENT 2: Darvin has a starting lineup... for now? SEGMENT 3: Hayes vs. Wood. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Dave Dave is the banking app that's leveling the financial playing field. Hello Colorado Rapids fans. This week on Holding The High Line, we discuss all the off-the-field news surrounding the Rapids. Rabbi and Red start by discussing the 1-1 draw at FC Dallas. It was good to see Rafael Navarro finally score a goal. Then Matt pours one (non-alcoholic) out for Rapids 2 after their 0-0 (1-4) loss to Austin FC II in the Western Conference Final. We discuss what went wrong, why it was such a close game, and the missed opportunity for R2 to honor this season that was filled with so much joy and success. Then we look ahead to the coaching search news. Chris Little, Jack Wilshire, and Efrain Juarez have all been linked. We go over their resumes, flaws, and what we think. Mark actually likes the Wilshire idea. Next we talk Victory Crossing. The Denver Post had a front page article in the Sunday edition about that and that was followed by a spicy district meeting in which Commerce City Mayor Benjamin Huseman went off. Lastly, we preview the weekend with Colorado hosting Real Salt Lake on Decision Day. Colorado Springs Switchbacks and Northern Colorado Hailstorm have USL playoff games as well.
Locked On Golden Knights - Daily Podcast On the Vegas Golden Knights
The Golden Knights entertain a well-rested Dallas Stars team tonight at T-Mobile Arena in their first meeting since the Western Conference Finals, won by VGK in six games. The Stars had a team-bonding weekend in Palm Springs after playing the opening game last Thursday and beating the Blues 2-1 in a shootout. Matt Duchene, Craig Smith and Sam Steel were off-season additions for Dallas. They should add some depth and fill in some gaps. Roope Hintz is listed as day-to-day for the Stars. Meanwhile, William Carrier appears to be returning from injury for VGK. Alex Pietrangelo, who took a puck to the face last week, was not on the ice yesterday and probably won't be in action tonight. We discuss when we can fully assess VGK and whether they are ready to make another Cup run, as we look at the VGK schedule. The Dallas Stars and Vegas Golden Knights meet for the first time since the Golden Knights knocked out the Stars in Game 6 of the Western Conference Final. The Stars are 1-0 and VGK is 3-0 and is showing no signs of a Stanley Cup hangover. The Stars were 3-0 last regular season against the Knights with two of those games going to a shootout. Vegas is a bit think defensively with injuries to multiple players like Alex Pietrangelo, Zack Whitecloud and Alec Martinez, with Roope Hintz back into the lineup the Stars should be able to take advantage. Joey gives his three keys to the game: Win the Fourth Line battle, Keep Jack Eichel off the scoresheet and forecheck heavy and hard. Among the better stories of a very strong preseason for the Los Angeles Lakers has been the play of D'Angelo Russell. His offense has been outstanding, including some red hot shooting from the perimeter, and improvements in his ability to attack the rim and finish effectively. The change of speed has been very effective, and he's been a leader in setting up his teammates. In short, he's a big reason the Lakers offense has been so strong. But the other thing that has stood out? Russell's work on defense. Not that he's some sort of DPOY candidate, but the attention to detail and an understanding that what happened last year, where defense was a big reason he was played off the floor in the Western Conference Finals, something he does not want to have happen again. On Sunday, Russell noted that he's tried now to pattern his game after Celtics point guard Derrick White, someone who he says doesn't get a lot of credit for simply being a winning player who makes winning plays. Not an All-Star, not an All NBA type, but someone who does the little things that contribute to being a truly great team. It was a very surprising name, surely, to most NBA fans. But one that makes a ton of sense for a guy like Russell. Meanwhile, Russell says he's not motivated by making another All-Star team, which, as it turns out, is the best way to actually make another one. The same holds for Anthony Davis and an MVP or DPOY, Austin Reaves and MIP, or Rui Hachimura for 6MOY. The Lakers have talked much more about process and winning, and enough of the latter will open things up for these types of acknowledgements. If the Lakers are a .500 team, nobody's getting votes for anything. Finally, the Lakers have been remarkably boring this preseason, in the best possible ways. Darvin Ham diffused most of the things that could have created headlines before training camp could even start, but has still managed to maintain a highly competitive environment. In a city and regarding a team where it takes... well, virtually nothing to create controversy or talk radio segments, it's been crickets. That's a great thing for the Lakers. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: D'Angelo Russell has an intersting role model for this season. SEGMENT 2: The Lakers have the right attitude when it comes to external rewards like All-Star teams. SEGMENT 3: Love that drama-free preseason. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! In today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey rewatches the Dallas Stars Opening Night vs the St. Louis Blues and gives his takeaways after a second look. Esa Lindell had a great first period and so did his partner Nils Lundkvist. The defense was pretty shaky and gave up some great looks but players like Thomas Harley and Miro Heiskanen were making plays. Which forward lines looked good? Jamie Benn, Wyatt Johnston and Evgenni Dadonov all had good nights, who else stood out to you? Roope practiced without any restrictions on Friday! What does the mean for the Stars when he comes back, and who do we expect to exit the lineup? To finish off, no hangover from the Vegas Golden Knights who are undefeated after three games, what to look forward to in the Western Conference Final rematch. The Dodgers will face the D-Backs in the NLDS. The Lakers-Nuggets beef continues after last years Western Conference Finals. USC's defense is still bad, but it seems like the coaching staff thinks theyre trending in the right direction.
NBC is exploring whether to obtain the rights to broadcast a slice of the expanded College Football Playoff in 2026. Senior Writer Michael McCarthy and newsletter co-author Eric Fisher discuss the news, along with their takeaways from Sunday's "Toy Story" NFL broadcast and Taylor Swift's appearance on "Sunday Night Football." Plus, Dallas Stars president and CEO Brad Alberts speaks with senior writer Owen Poindexter about last season's run to the Western Conference Final, growing hockey in the southern U.S., and why NHL expansion teams are so successful.
The Lakers kicked off training camp with Media Day on Monday, and man alive, there was plenty of interesting stuff on the agenda. (What there wasn't? Drama! Tension! Controversy! It was ahistorical for a Lakers Media Day, to be honest.) So without all the low-hanging, headline grabbing stuff available, the focus was on what's in front of a team that rightly has extremely high expectations following a run to the Western Conference Finals. One big thing everyone was happy about? Continuity. All the returning players, from LeBron James on down, spoke glowingly about what it means for this team to be entering training camp starting somewhere ahead of scratch. They know each other. They know the system. They have to integrate players into it, but the guys who are new are also role players, and in the case of Taurean Prince and Gabe Vincent, are extremely well respected pros. Christian Wood? Well, he's got some stuff to prove, but he's the only player in the rotation with any sort of question mark. Guys are incredibly excited that the band is back together. As for LeBron, he's back after floating the idea of retirement following the end of last season. What brought him back? And how much longer is he planning on playing? While James definitely didn't say this would be his final season, he also definitely said he couldn't look past this year. What goes into the calculus around how long he'll play? What does Bronny James and a good health report have to do with any of it? Anthony Davis said he'd like to play in all 82 games this year, and is prepping with a mindset of making it happen. Obviously he's not going to play that many games, but he's obviously aware of the perception surrounding him, and hopes to push back through attendance. Does he see himself as the face of the franchise? Is this his team? LeBron says it's his, but what does Davis think? Why does each guy answer that question the way that he does? With training camp set to open next week, GM Rob Pelinka and head coach Darvin Ham met with the media Thursday, and covered a ton of ground. After all, compared to where they were at this time last season, Pelinka especially was far more comfortable and confident answering questions about the team, and the direction in which it is headed. To the point where he didn't have to try and talk up their title chances. Frankly, that sort of thing is assumed. This is a group that expects to contend, and isn't dependent on smoke and mirrors to make it seem possible. That, as a starting point, is a great place to be. From there, Pelinka spent a lot of time talking about Anthony Davis, and why the team felt comfortable investing that massive contract extension in him, despite a long track record of injury that is certainly not going to fade over the life of the contract. So what was the foundation? "Character, character, character," Pelinka said. The team believes not just in the talent, but also the person. Still, Pelinka noted that they've talked to A.D. about the investment they need him to make in the franchise. Not to imply he hasn't bought in to this point, but the post LeBron Era is coming, and they've signed him to be The Man in the not-so-distant future. That's a different deal. And regarding LeBron, Ham made it clear they have a strategy to keep him fresh at a time where the league doesn't want its stars sitting just for rest. And it involves playing him less. So basically, be good, win games, let LeBron avoid as much high leverage activity as possible. They talked about the starting guards - no surprise, it'll be D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves. Interestingly, both expressed a great deal of confidence in Russell, focusing much more on the positive impact he made after arriving from Minnesota at the deadline as opposed to a very, very ugly Western Conference Finals against the Nuggets. Finally, while there won't be that much competition for starting gigs (the third forward spot is the only real question mark) there will be a TON of competition for minutes. And that is something Ham loves. But everyone, Pelinka says, will have opportunities to contribute. And in this case, he's not blowing smoke. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers open camp next week, and Pelinka and Ham are talking up the team. SEGMENT 2: The investment in Davis, and protecting the investment in LeBron. SEGMENT 3: Starting guards and the competition for playing time. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Tuesday's show was all about the sea change in strategy for the Lakers when it comes to roster building. Where once it was all about cap space above all - meaning no long term contracts for anyone but the biggest stars - now the Lakers have a bunch of multi-year deals for non-elite players. This, by the way, is a good thing, promoting continuity, and actually providing more flexibility for the front office than simply being locked into that "clean sheet" strategy. But why did they shift? That was a question left on the Locked On Lakers YouTube page. Was it the opportunity presented by a team that advanced to the Western Conference Finals after playing together for only a few weeks? Was it a reaction to a shift in the league towards continuity and depth? Was it the lack of any realistic way to add a big name star? Could be some of each, but this year now becomes a bit of a referendum on the shift, and an opportunity to build. That doesn't mean the Lakers won't make moves over the next year or two - they obviously will - but to what end? Is the stars-at-all-costs era over? From there, another question looks at Darvin Ham. While he's not on the hot seat this year, after last year's run, what about his staff? Do the Lakers need more "big names" on it? And what are reasonable expectations for Ham in Year 2? What was good last year, what wasn't? Have Lakers fans fully bought in? Finally, Jarred Vanderbilt was recently asked about players he patterned his game after growing up. One was Penny Hardaway. The other? Another very popular former Lakers lefty. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Why did the Lakers shift strategy around the roster? What prompted it? Jason Timpf continues to rank his top 25 players in the NBA by revealing No. 6, Los Angeles Lakers' Anthony Davis. After starting the season 2-10, Anthony Davis carried the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals by anchoring the defense. While he isn't the offensive player of other players in the top 10, his presence on defense is enough for him to be ranked 6th in the NBA. #Volume #herdSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
