Locked On Golden Knights - Daily Podcast On the Vegas Golden Knights
The Golden Knights will host the Arizona Coyotes Friday night, a team that is much improved over last season. But we still don't know if we will see a lot of NHL talent for Arizona or a variation of the Tucson Roadrunners. We also don't know what vets will be in action for the Golden Knights tonight. Bruce Cassidy also talked about the usage of players this upcoming season. He doesn't want to overtax his players. He also talked about Jack Eichel and the goal of playing just 20-minutes a game. And we have a lot of WTF - What The Friday - comments. FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. First online real money wager only. Bonus issued as nonwithdrawable free bets that expires in 14 days. Jiri Patera and the Golden Knights gave up three goals on the first six San Jose shots and the Golden Knights fell in the opener on the road 5-2. With a lot of the regulars out of the lineup, the Golden Knights lost a lot of puck battles, but Bruce Cassidy said afterwards that he was happy the team played better in the final two periods. Some of the key starters that played included Brett Howden, Shea Theodore and Ivan Barbeshev. We preview tonight's game in Colorado against the Avs. And, we talk about the 2019 fight between current Golden Knight Max Comtois and Shea Theodore (we believe it's Theo's only fight in the NHL. The themes were familiar between Kelly McCrimmon and Bruce Cassidy on opening day of VGK training camp. McCrimmon said he's glad the Golden Knights were able to keep most of their core together, save Reilly Smith, after winning the championship. And Cassidy feels the team is in a good position to win the Cup again. Our Chris Gawlik spent most of Thursday at City National. We hear from both McCrimmon and Cassidy on the goaltending situation. McCrimmon said Robin Lehner is still out due to hip surgery and out indefinitely on LTIR. Paul Cotter was among the players that stood out on opening day of training camp, lined up in the left flank along side Karlsson and Amadio. And, we have our WTF segment, What The Friday. VGK was very efficient in 5v5 last season. The Golden Knights are hoping the trend carries over this season. Did we overreact about the lack of power play scoring by VGK last season? Perhaps. VGK scored on 20% of its power play opportunities during the regular season. That improved to 22% in the playoffs. VGK was actually on average with the rest of the NHL, 21.3%. The Bruce Cassidy system is working, but the Golden Knights struggled somewhat on the power play. Perhaps those struggles were overblown. We also discuss Gary Bettman and Conor McDavid's ideas of extending overtime periods. They each say OTs should be extended 5-10 minutes in length. This past season about 70% of the games that went past regulation were decided in overtime. They didn't extend to shootouts. And we talk about Chris and family's visit with the Stanley Cup. Amid the departure of Reilly Smith and Jonathan Marchessault moving to the top line, this will be the first time in seven seasons that William Karlsson will not be opening a campaign with his Misfit friends by his side. That could prompt VGK and Bruce Cassidy to move Karlsson to a newly formed third line with Paul Cotter and Michael Amadio for starters or other players could move onto that line. It appears that the Stephenson-Stone-Howden line could be line two heading into the season. But there is definitely concern about the third line and how it will look this upcoming season. We also talked about the new Vegas 34 TV channel and we continue to follow the Stanley Cup. FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. First online real money wager only. According to an interview on TVA, a French TV network, Jonathan Marchessault said there were often disagreements and a couple of shouting matches on the bench with head coach Bruce Cassidy. The Conn Smythe winner said "It hasn't always been sunshine and rainbows between us.' Marchessault added that they yelled at each other on the bench during games, during the playoffs. "But I think he wanted the best of me and we managed to be able to work together," according to the Original Misfit. We talked about a game in which we saw Cassidy bench Marchessault for a period or so against the Seattle Kraken. Marchessault also said there have yet to be discussions for a new contract with VGK - as his expires at the end of next season. Also on this episode: George McPhee says he feels VGK can repeat as Stanley Cup Champions with nearly everyone back. And, we break down the Penguins trade to pickup Erik Karlsson on Sunday. The Pens have won the off-season so far. FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. First online real money wager only. Bonus issued as nonwithdrawable free bets that expires in 14 days. The Bruins have a vacant C following the retirement of Patrice Bergeron, which begs the question as to who will be the next captain. Ian McLaren looks back at the captains since the 70s, and discusses ex-Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy's comments about Brad Marchand filling the role. Marchand would be a great choice, and one no one would have seen coming a decade ago. But will the Bruins go younger? Perhaps Charlie McAvoy is the guy? Or David Pastrnak? Appearing on the Cam and Strick podcast this week, VGK head coach Bruce Cassidy said Jack Eichel winning the Stanley Cup should elevate his game and career. Cassidy said Eichel's two-way game improved a lot this past season. Eichel was told by Cassidy that he would play fewer minutes before the season, due to Cassidy's system and a system that rolls four lines. Eichel gave up a lot of his minutes and his offensive game to become a better defender. Cassidy added that Eichel needs to improve in some areas, including the faceoff circle where he won just 45% of his draws, if he wants to win the Selke Award. Eichel also might earn some minutes this season on the penalty kill. Cassidy also said he 'did cartwheels" when his former employer, Boston, was eliminated in the playoffs. He talked about Chandler Stephenson being one of the most underrated players in the league, and Ivan Barbeshev's playoff contributions. On this edition we also compare the contracts of goalies Adin Hill and Jeremy Swayman, we track the Stanley Cup visits, and we talk about the VGK road trip starting later this month. Remember those comments by Max Pacioretty when he was traded from VGK to Carolina, you know the ones where he claimed it was a "country club" environment in Las Vegas and the team lack accountability? Well those comments resonated with Bruce Cassidy, as he told Boston Hockey Now this week. He said as a result, a few things were tightened up on the ice. He said he held the team accountable and held the team to "a standard away from the puck." Cassidy talked about a range of topics in the interview from a meeting with Jack Eichel in which he said they would win or lose together to the goalie situation to his day with the Cup. We also covered the NHL Rookie Face-off coming back to Las Vegas for the first time since 2018. Games will feature six teams, including VGK, scheduled for September 15-18 at both City National and The Dollar Loan Center. We also track where the Stanley Cup has been this week. During Jack Eichel's Day with the Cup last week, he met with the media and spent most of his time praising head coach Bruce Cassidy. Eichel said VGK would not have won the Cup without Cassidy . "What Cassidy did for me and our group, it was the reason we won," Eichel said. Furthermore Eichel's dad said Cassidy made his son a complete 200-foot player. He said Cassidy did a "tremendous job, a great job with Jack." Eichel could have a big season in 2023-24 because he has a consistent skating line and knows what is expected from Cassidy. We also talk about the VGK juggernaut - they averaged over 3 goals per game in-season and 4 goals in the Cup playoffs. Will this scoring continue in Year 2 with Bruce Cassidy? We also trek the Stanley Cup visits. FANDUEL DISCLAIMER: 21+ in select states. First online real money wager only. Bonus issued as nonwithdrawable free bets that expires in 14 days. VGK announced the hiring of two new assistant coaches. Dominique Ducharme, the former Montreal Canadiens head coach joins Bruce Cassidy's staff as does Joel Ward, who was an assistant with the AHL Silver Knights. Ducharme was fired a season removed from guiding the Habs to the Stanley Cup Final, where his team lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was fired in February 2022 after his team had several key injuries, COVID issues, and a new front office. It is not certain what the duties will be for Ducharme and Ward, but VGK now has three current or former NHL head coaches begin the bench (Ducharme, Stevens and Cassidy.) Ward has been with Henderson since the franchise moved to Las Vegas in 2020. They replace Ryan Craig, who was promoted to new head coach of AHL Henderson and Mishka Donskov, who left the organization for undetermined reasons. We also talk about the VGK team members on the ESPY's Red Carpet - Nic Hague, Adin Hill and Jonathan Marchessault. We talked about Bruce Cassidy's radio on WEEI in Boston.
