Knee Injuries are a common occurrence for football players, especially Offensive Linemen. Many ACL & MCL injuries happen in the chaos of flying bodies near the line of scrimmage. Offensive Linemen are susceptible to knee injuries when bodies fall into their legs. While these injuries are difficult to prevent, there are ways to minimize knee injuries and maximize functionality by focusing on proper Knee Position.Preventing knee injuries starts with understanding how the knee operates. The knee is the stable joint between the mobile ankle/foot joint and the very mobile ball & socket joint of the hip. The knee is just a simple hinge. It bends, but does not rotate. Nolan Clausen, movement specialist and owner of Midwest Movement Elkhorn says " Rarely is a knee injury the result of something going on in the knee, but more as a result of an ankle or hip problem". To maximize knee health and prevent knee injuries the knee must stay "on track" which means the knee must stay in line with the ankle & hip so the power is transferred efficiently. When the knee is out of line, the ligaments that hold the knee in place are stressed and injuries happen. There are few exercises that specifically strengthen the knee. Rather, it's important to pay attention to the knee's alignment while training. Whether its squats or lunges (or any leg training exercises) athletes must focus on proper knee alignment. Training with proper form and knee alignment prepares the body to function properly when competing. In conclusion, proper knee alignment is the key to preventing injuries and maximizing power & athleticism for offensive linemen and all athletes. Proper functioning of the joints above and below the knee are necessary for the knee to work correctly. Strength & flexibility of the ankle/foot complex & hips are the only true way maximize knee health. Obviously, Offensive Linemen want to stay healthy and prevent knee injuries, but they also want access to full power to perform on the gridiron. Stay tuned for next week's video where we teach Offensive Line Drills focusing on proper knee position. This will maximize Offensive Line performance and help prevent knee injuries! The Bober Academy was founded in 2019 by 8 year NFL Veteran Chris Bober with the Mission to train and develop athletes to maximize their potential and succeed on the gridiron by coaching the fundamentals of offensive line technique. The 3 main Building Blocks to O-Line Success are 1) Playing in a Football Position 2) Eye Discipline & 3) Understanding Leverage. As we kick off 2022 I will teach how to build a Lineman from the ground up.A Football Position is achieved by playing with you feet on the ground, a wide stance for balance & stability, and playing with low hips and knee bend to strike with a rising blow. The foundation of everything is an Offensive Lineman developing a relationship with his feet and the ground. In this video Nolan Clausen, movement specialist at Midwest Movement Elkhorn, helps us understand how our feet are the source of power for the entire body. He explains that curling your big toe activates the glute muscles and brain for action! As we progress with developing Linemen, we will incorporate drills that are performed without shoes so linemen can feel how their feet are vital to their blocking success. In the final Episode of Building a Lineman we focus on an Offensive Linemen's neck. Nolan Clausen of Midwest Movement Elkhorn (https://www.midwestmovementelkhorn.com/) explains why neck strength & mobility is critical to Offensive Line Dominance. First we talk about "Camp Neck." This is a condition all football players experience by adding the weight of their helmet. The soreness can be minimized by strengthening the neck prior to camp starting and also wearing your helmet in the weeks before practice starts. We then talk about how the head and neck are involved in playing football. There is no way to completely remove helmet collisions from football, but you can prepare for those collisions by focusing on proper body posture. Neck soreness and injuries usually occur when the neck is out of alignment with the spine. Nolan recommends focusing on keeping the head stacked on top of the spine minimizing pressure on vertebrae's. For Offensive Linemen the helmet is often used as a tool for effective striking. One mistake I see coaches make is purposely teaching offensive linemen to keep their head out of blocks by craning their neck back. While trying to minimize head collisions is a good theory, offensive linemen craning their neck up and back may actually lead to more injuries since that doesn't conform to stacking the neck in a position of strength. I like to coach offensive linemen to keep their head stacked when they strike so the impact is absorbed and dissipated. Staying in alignment and keeping our joints stacked is a common theme for our Building a Linemen series. Football is a violent game and injuries happen, but many can be avoided by focusing on proper posture and alignment. Nolan demonstrates keeping your chin in and stacked. He jokingly says to "pretend like your sister is trying to kiss you." That posture helps activate the stabilizing muscles in your neck and core to absorb the load and protect the spine. Nolan recommends some best practices for training stability in the neck and core in preparation for the football season. He also demonstrates some exercises and stretches to maintain strength and mobility in an offensive lineman's neck during the football season. Lastly, Nolan advocates awareness for shooting or sharp pains originating from the neck area. If the pain is sharp or burning he recommends seeing a professional immediately before the problems gets worse. A great example is stingers which is when a player has burning down their arm from a collision. When that kind of pain happens, get help from a professional immediately. Building a Lineman: Shoulder Stability On this edition of the Bober Academy Football Podcast Nolan Clausen of Midwest Movement Elkhorn (https://www.midwestmovementelkhorn.com/) explains why shoulder stabilization is critical to Offensive Line Dominance. For Offensive Linemen shoulder strength is paramount. We know that most power is generated by the legs and hips. The hands (and shoulders) are weapons that strike the defender, but shoulder strength & stability connect those weapons to the body. Nolan compares shoulder stability to firing a cannon. If the shoulders are weak and unstable its like firing a cannon from a canoe. There is little power behind the shot and the boat will sink. With proper shoulder stability and offensive lineman can launch his weapons like cannons on a battleship which is much more stabile and powerful. The anatomy of the shoulder is very unique. It is minimally connected bone on bone to the body with a tiny A/C joint. Most of the shoulder attachment is through muscles which means effective use of the shoulders is dependent on strengthening those muscles. We often think shoulder strength comes from the big muscles like the pec, delt, trap, & lat muscles, but Nolan explains why strengthening of the smaller connective muscles near the spine and ribs are more important. Without a solid foundation to anchor the bigger muscles Offensive Linemen are less effective and more prone to injury. Nolan goes on to explain how training using rotational motion doesn't really help shoulder strength. Rather, he recommends more functional exercises and proper posture & body position when lifting. Independent dumbbells or one sided lifts create more stability. He also recommends focusing twice as much on pulling exercises than pulling. Ironically, these lifts add more to strength and will actually increase bar lifts (like barbell bench)! Nolan goes on to demonstrate some band exercises that build strength in the shoulder's supporting muscles that create shoulder stability. He also talks about some shoulder lifts to avoid. Lastly, Nolan prefers shoulder mobility over flexibility. He demonstrates a controlled articular rotation exercise that helps create shoulder mobility that really helps Offensive Linemen. He wants a salad bowl vs a shot glass range of motion for shoulders. Shoulder strength & stability id very important to Offensive Linemen and is one of the leading injuries. Take Nolan's advice and work on stability to build strength this offseason so you can dominate on the gridiron this Fall! Building a Lineman: Back/Core Strength On this edition of the Bober Academy Football Podcast Nolan Clasuen of Midwest Movement Elkhorn (https://www.midwestmovementelkhorn.com/) explains why back and core strength is critical to Offensive Line Dominance. Core strength is the actually based on proper breathing! Stabilization of the core area is the basis for any body movement and performance. To access the power of the lower body connected to the ground it must transfer from the lower body to the upper body with a strong core. An Offensive Lineman's weapons are his hands, shoulders, and inadvertently the helmet & neck. No matter how much you bench press, its useless if it isn't connected to your Power Core. To link the power of your legs through the ground and the weapons in your upper body you MUST have a strong foundation throughout your core! The diaphragm muscle is the key to proper breathing and engaging the core. Breathing by expanding the chest is not the correct way! Breathing where the stomach area expands creates inter-abdominal pressure supporting the spine and relieving pressure on the lower back. This is true core strength. A great test is to cough or grunt and feel how your abdominal muscles contract. Thats the feeling an Offensive Lineman needs to feel when striking. So how do you now if you're doing it correct? Nolan recommends focusing on the core first when doing any strengthening exercises or training. Basically, stick your gut out and go to work. Watch yourself in the mirror to make sure your pelvis is in line with your spine at all times. Another key is to NOT arch your back when lifting (like squats) or striking. For Offensive Linemen do NOT throw your head back when striking or in pass blocking. I will provide a video soon to show you some drills to work on proper core/back positioning. One last trick is to grunt when lifting or applying force. Have you ever noticed how tennis players grunt when they swing? That's because they're engaging their core to apply maximum force and power to the ball. As Nolan said, proper core position & breathing is paramount to all athletes. Practice engaging your core and see how much stronger you will be. Apply that to your training and transition it to your blocking technique and you will Dominate on the Gridiron! The hips are the primary source of an Offensive Lineman's power. Power is often developed in the weight room with exercises like squats, hand cleans, and lunges. However, while developing pure hip power is important, it doesn't necessarily translate to functional strength on the field. In this episode of the Bober Academy Football Podcast we continue the Building a Lineman Series now focusing on maximizing hip power and flexibility to help Lineman dominate on the gridiron. Coaches often focus on "low pads" as an emphasis to stay low for Offensive Lineman. However, "low pads" isn't the most accurate teaching tool to success. I like to use the term "low hips win" as a more complete coaching point for Offensive Linemen. Nolan Clausen of Midwest Movement in Elkhorn, NE https://www.midwestmovementelkhorn.com/ gives a great explanation about how the hips generate power for Offensive Linemen. Nolan also demonstrates some exercises to create functional strength over a greater range of motion than just traditional lifting develops. Hip flexibility is also important for Offensive Linemen to stay in a football position and move efficiently while playing. Nolan, and his assistant Blake, also show some great stretches that again create strength and stability over a greater range of motion. This also helps with injury prevention and the ability to withstand the precarious positions that often occur on the gridiron. Here are a couple supplemental videos that demonstrate these exercises and stretches: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_ofqJQu9B4&feature=youtu.be - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1xlPt5JOEI&feature=youtu.be - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_ofqJQu9B4&feature=youtu.be - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5acgOyY41y0&feature=youtu.be The Bober Academy was founded in 2019 by 8 year NFL Veteran Chris Bober with the Mission to train and develop athletes to maximize their potential and succeed on the gridiron by coaching the fundamentals of offensive line technique. Knee Injuries are a common occurrence for football players, especially Offensive Linemen. Many ACL & MCL injuries happen in the chaos of flying bodies near the line of scrimmage. Offensive Linemen are susceptible to knee injuries when bodies fall into their legs. While these injuries are difficult to prevent, there are ways to minimize knee injuries and maximize functionality by focusing on proper Knee Position. Preventing knee injuries starts with understanding how the knee operates. Another topic we discuss is the viability of Offensive Linemen wearing knee braces. While knee braces may prevent an athlete's knee from being out of position they often weaken the stabilizing muscles that prevent knee injuries. Once the brace comes off and isn't stabilizing the knee (like when playing in games with out knee braces) knee injuries actually increase due to dependence on the brace. Nolan recommends (and demonstrates) continual stabilizing exercises in lieu of relying on knee braces exclusively. The 3 main Building Blocks to O-Line Success are 1) Playing in a Football Position 2) Eye Discipline & 3) Understanding Leverage. As we kick off 2022 I will teach how to build a Lineman from the ground up. A Football Position is achieved by playing with you feet on the ground, a wide stance for balance & stability, and playing with knee bend to strike with a rising blow. The foundation of everything is developing a relationship with an Offensive Lineman's feet and the ground. In this video Nolan Clausen, movement specialist at Midwest Movement Elkhorn, helps us understand how our feet are the source of power for the entire body.
