How do you transform losing teams into champions? What makes an uncommon leader? Coach Jim Johnson discovered the answers to these questions through both devastating failure and extraordinary success during his 30-year basketball coaching career. The journey begins with humility. After being fired from his first coaching position following 17 consecutive losses, Johnson realized he had much to learn about leadership. This humbling experience became the catalyst for developing seven leadership keys that ultimately produced 428 victories and transformed multiple basketball programs. At the heart of Johnson's leadership philosophy lies the understanding that great leadership starts with self-leadership. "Who's the first person you need to lead? Yourself," Johnson explains. This means clarifying your personal mission and core values before attempting to lead others. From there, building trust becomes foundational—aligning words with actions, telling the truth (even when difficult), and providing specific, meaningful recognition. The conversation takes an extraordinary turn when Johnson shares what he calls "the greatest night I ever had in coaching." The J-Mac story—where team manager Jason McElwain, a student with autism, scored 20 points including six three-pointers in the final four minutes of his first and only game—transcends basketball. What made this moment truly special wasn't just J-Mac's performance, but how the team deliberately chose to "shine the light" on their manager, exemplifying the "we over me" mentality Johnson had cultivated.Throughout his leadership journey, Johnson discovered the power of vulnerability and becoming what he calls the "chief question asker" rather than simply providing answers. By shifting from dictating to listening, he empowered players to take ownership and exceed their perceived limitations.Whether you're leading a business team, coaching athletes, or simply striving to become a better version of yourself, Coach Johnson's principles offer a roadmap for authentic, transformative leadership. His message—respect all people—serves as both a guiding value and a challenge to leaders everywhere.Learn More About Coach Jim Johnson: Visit his website at coachjimjohnson.com for more information on his leadership programs and speaking engagements. Thanks for listening in to the Uncommon Leader Podcast. Bible Reading: Romans 8:5-14Jack set the soccer ball on the hash mark and readied himself for the penalty shot. It was his favorite part of soccer practice. When Coach Johnson blew the whistle, Jack kicked a rocket into the top right corner of the net. "GOAAAAAL!" he yelled. He was about to high-five Coach Johnson on his way to the back of the line when he suddenly stopped and began scratching his arm furiously. "What's wrong, Jack?" Coach Johnson asked. "Let me have a look.""These bumps won't stop itching," Jack groaned. "I got poison ivy last weekend.""Don't scratch it," Coach Johnson said."I can't help it!" said Jack. "I have to scratch. It feels so good!" He was about to scratch some more but stopped when he saw Coach Johnson's raised eyebrow."It may feel good for the moment, but you're only making it worse. Look how red it's getting," Coach said. "You know, Jack, this reminds me of the sermon my pastor gave at church last week. Your rash is a lot like sin.""You mean it's a sin to scratch?" said Jack.Coach Johnson chuckled. "No, it's not a sin to scratch. What I mean is that our sinful nature often urges us to do wrong like your bumps urge you to scratch them. What happened at last Saturday's game when that kid tripped you after you blocked his goal?" "I went to push him down from behind, but then I stopped and walked away," Jack said.Coach nodded. "It would have felt good for two seconds to get him back, but then what?""I would've gotten kicked out." Jack looked at his coach. "I'm glad I didn't scratch the itch to get even."Coach smiled. "Our sinful urges will never fully go away until we get to heaven, but because we trust in Jesus, we don't have to give in to them. He's given us the Holy Spirit, who lives inside us and gives us power to follow the desires God puts in our hearts instead--desires to love Him and those around us. We don't have to scratch the itch to do wrong--and even when we do, Jesus promises to forgive us.""Okay," Jack said. "I won't scratch the itch--whether it's sin or poison ivy!" –Robert A. GutierrezHow About You?Do you sometimes want to do wrong things? Even if you're a Christian, you'll still feel the urge to sin. But guess what? You don't have to give in to those temptations because Jesus freed us from the power of sin when He died and rose from the grave. When we trust Him as our Savior, we get to experience His endless forgiveness and live in freedom knowing He gives us power to say no to sin.Today's Key Verse:Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. (NLT) (Romans 8:12)Today's Key Thought:Say no to sin

With nearly 50 years of experience coaching high-level athletes, including Olympic Silver Medalist Raven Saunders, you would be hard-pressed to find someone more knowledgeable than Coach Herbert Johnson. I'm incredibly grateful that he graced us with his presence to help me break down some of the marquee events of the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris! We start things off with the Women's 100m. American Sha'Carri Richardson looks to cap off an incredible comeback story by bringing home the Gold. But, as always, the Jamaicans have something to say about that. We discuss the differences between Richardson and Shericka Jackson's skillsets plus the odds of sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to once again find the podium. The Men's 100m has its own USA-Jamaica rivalry. Noah Lyles is one of the most polarizing figures in the sport, but also one of the most talented. Can Jamaicans Kishane Thompson and Oblique Seville silence him? Or will Italy's Lamont Jacobs show the world once again why he's the reigning 100m Gold Medalist? Coach Johnson also talks about how the physiology of sprinters has changed over time. Then, we move on to discussing the potential of world records falling. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone's lowered her own 400m hurdle world record at the US Olympic Trials. Can she do it again? Or will Femke Bol prove that Sydney has more to compete against than just the clock? Also, Sweden's Mondo Duplantis is the king of the Pole Vault. Coach explains what makes him so great and what has to happen for him to once again set a world record. We finish up with the Women's Shot Put! Coach Johnson discovered Raven Saunders as a high school freshman at Burke High School in Charleston, SC. As their coach, he helped guide Raven to the National High School record in the Shot Put. They have once again teamed up heading into this Olympic Games as they look to recreate that magic. Coach Johnson talks about why Raven is his favorite to bring home the Gold but also breaks down why the other athletes will make it a tall task. We also have a conversation about his coaching philosophy, including his years coaching me! Ask anyone in the circle of baseball about Marc Johnson and chances are they either have a tie to him or know someone who does. That's because for more than 50 years, Coach Johnson led one of the best baseball programs in the state of Colorado. A program that produced more than 50 professional players and several that became household names. He grew up in Nebraska and followed his father's passion for the diamond. He played baseball throughout high school and found himself becoming more enamored with how the game was played. After getting his degree from the then Colorado State College (now University of Northern Colorado), he got a job teaching in the Cherry Creek School District. He wasn't there long before he was drafted… into the Army and he was set to head to Vietnam. Until he got a phone call asking if he'd rather go to Vietnam or coach baseball on a base in Texas. He chose the latter. After leaving the Army, and with some coaching under his belt, he came back to Cherry Creek and started to teach again and coach. In the spring of 1973, he took over as the head coach for the Bruins and stayed there until he won his 9th State Title in June of 2024. Now it's time for retirement.
Steve and Charlie recapped LSU baseball's "rollercoaster" 2024 season. They listened to postgame press conference audio from Jay Johnson. West called the freshman core of Steven Milam, Ashton Larson, Jake Brown, and Kade Anderson the "pillars" of the 2025 roster. He also previewed Coach Johnson's decisions in the upcoming transfer portal. Steve and Charlie spoke to a WWL listener about LSU baseball.
