How do you know when to replace certain parts? They begin to talk to you. Find out what, why, how, and when when Mike, Paul, and Colleen tackle this and other questions. Email podcasts@aopa.org for a chance to be on the show. Join the world's largest aviation community at aopa.org/join Full notes below: John is part of a club that owns a Cessna 172. Another member told him he shouldn't move the rudder by hand when he preflights. Mike said to make sure he pushes it at a rivet line to ensure he doesn't bend the sheet metal, but otherwise it's ok. Paul describes how the system is built. He said in a Skyhawk the rudder pedal tension is created by springs that pull them toward the firewall. There's not a cable tension spec. The steering bungees are between the rudder pedals and the nose gear. If you get in and push the pedals when stationary, you are putting stress on the bungees. Jarek wants to know if the FAA has lost its mind. He is wondering about the FAA's AC 20-105, which says that engines that run past TBO have a higher rate of failure, and that engine overhauls at TBO are usually cheaper than those that are run beyond. Mike said Lycoming had previously issued a white paper that said that the typical lifespan of a crankshaft was 14,000 hours. Camshafts have corrosion issues, and don't cause failures, and sometimes gears need to be replaced. But rarely does time impact safety. There are people inside the FAA who disagree with the policy, Mike says. On one hand they require manufacturers to set a TBO. On the other hand, they tell Part 91 operators that they can ignore it. Typically engines that fail that have run beyond TBO tend to be not related to age, but because of maintenance resulting from the fact that the engine is older. In fact, it's usually the opposite, Mike says. Lower time engines typically fail because of infant mortality. Aaron and a partner recently purchased a Seneca with turbo Continental TSIO-360-KBs. They installed new intercoolers and the manual revision suggests new power settings. He's ignored the chart and is flying around 30 inches lean of peak. Mike said the chart is interesting if you are operating rich of peak, but irrelevant lean of peak. The power output of the engine is determined by whichever component is in shortest supply. Rich of peak, you have more fuel than you need, so power is controlled by air through the throttle and the prop. Lean of peak, fuel is in shortest supply, so power is controlled through the mixture. He would run a slightly reduced throttle, just to avoid overworking the turbos. Rory has a Cardinal that he bought 12 years ago, and he hadn't ever changed the ignition wires. So he started to wonder about when and why to change them. The hosts agree that if a wire fails it feels like a stumble or mis-fire because it just takes one spark plug offline. They say to run them on condition, and only change them when they start talking to you through mis-firing.

Welcome to the seventy-seventh episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit show with your host retired Lt Col Mark Hasara, KC-135 pilot and Air Force Weapons School graduate. I was turned on to a great memoier website by my good friend Scott Brown. Navy Captain Bo Smith is responsible for helping create the Navy's IRON HAND Surface to Air Missile or SAM supression procedures during the Vietnam War. His unit went from flying the A-4 Skyhawk with iron gunsights to the fabulous smart airplane the LTV A-7 Corsair II. In this first of a two part series, Bo tells us what it's like flying the A-4 and A-7 on DIXIE Station to flying the F-105 Wild Weasel at McConnell during an exchange tour with the US Air Force. This episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit show is financially sponsored by Wall Pilot, custom aviation art for the walls of your home, office, or hanger. Wall Pilot sells four, six, and eight foot long profiles of famous aircraft printed on vinyl you can peel off and stick on any flat surface. Bo's first assignment flying attack aircraft was in the Douglas A-4C Skyhawk, known as Heinemenn's Hotrod after Ed Heinemann the famous Douglas engineer, because you literally wore the small attack jet. Bo flew with VA-15 Golden Valions and this is his plane during the first Vietnam Cruise of 1966. During the LINEACKER campaign over Vietnam, Bo flew with the VA-82 Mauraders. This VA-82 Mauraders A-7C is loaded for an Iron Hand mission he spoke of during the show carrying Mk20 Rockeye cluster bombs and AGM-45 Shrike anti-radiation missiles. Here is another Iron Hand A-4F Skyahwk assigned to VA-55 Warhorses. The Mauraders were chosen for the famous Than Hoa Railway Bridge strike carrying AGM- Walleye tv guided bombs. The second Walleye launched by Lt Scott Baldwin dropped one span into the river taking the bridge out of action. During an exchange tour with the Air Force, Bo flew the Republic F-105F and F-105G Wild Weasel Thunderchief. This F-105G from the 333rd Tactical Fighter Squadron flew missions over Vietnam and is credited with three North Vietnamese MiG kills, one by dropping a bomb rack off the jet which hit the MiG chasing it The last comat cruise for LTV A-7E Corsair IIs was during Desert Storm. VA-46 Clansmen and VA-72 Blue Hawks were part of the USS John F Kennedy airwing. This VA-72 A-7E was the Squadron Skipper Commander JR "Shooter" Saunders jet armed for a Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses or SEAD mission into Iraq. Please go by Bo Smith's fantastic website, an electronic journal of his exploits flying missions in the A-4 Skyhawk and A-7 Corsair II over Vietnam. He even has some of the charts of his targets showing the triple A gun sites and SAM sites on the maps! This is probably one of the best Vietnam War websites you will come across at Bo Smith. He does update the wesite when he finds new information. The second episode with Captain Bo Smith will be out next week. Thanks for downloading and listening to this and previous episodes of the Lessons from the Cockpit show. We are over 25,000 downloads now. Welcome to the seventy-seventh episode of the Lessons from the Cockpit show with your host retired Lt Col Mark Hasara, KC-135 pilot and Air Force Weapons School graduate. I was turned on to a great memoir website by my good friend Scott Brown. Navy Captain Bo Smith is responsible for helping create the Navy's IRON HAND Surface to Air Missile or SAM suppression procedures during the Vietnam War. Bo started his Naval Aviation career with two Vietnam tours in the Douglas A-4B and A-4C Skyhawk with Attack Squadron VA-15 Valions. His third tour during the 1972 LINEBACKER I and LINEBACKER II campaigns Bo was assigned to Attack Squadron VA-82 Marauders flying the A-7C Corsair II. In this first of a two part series, Bo tells us what it's like flying the A-4 and A-7 on YANKEE Stations, to teaching new aircrews in the Republic F-105 Thunderchief at McConnell AFB Kansas in a US Air Force exchange tour. Bo's first assignment flying Navy attack aircraft was in the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk during the 1966 and 1967 Rolling Thunder air campaign. Bo flew with VA-15 Gold Tails, developing the IRON HAND SAM suppression tactics used in Carrier Air Wing Ten. This print of a VA-15 A-4C was Bo's personal Skyhawk during his second 1967 Rolling Thunder Vietnam cruise. During the LINEBACKER I and II campaigns in 1972 over Vietnam, Bo flew with Attack Squadron VA-82 Marauders. This VA-82 Marauders A-7C is loaded for an Iron Hand mission he spoke of during the show carrying Mk20 Rockeye cluster bombs and AGM-45 Shrike anti-radiation missiles. US Navy attack planes carried similar weapons loads on Iron Hand SAM suppression missions like this A-4F Skyhawk assigned to VA-55 Warhorses. The Marauders were chosen for the famous Than Hoa Railway Bridge strike on 6 October 1972 carrying AGM-62 Walleye tv guided bombs. Walleyes launched by LCDR Leighton "Snuffy" Smith and his wingman Ltjg Marv Baldwin destroyed the center pillar supporting the Than Hoa bridge causing the center span to collapse. LCDR Leighton Smith retired as a four star Admiral and commander of all Naval Forces in Europe. Bo flew the Republic F-105B/D and F-105F Thunderchief as an instructor pilot training new Thud crews during his Air Force exchange tour out of McConnell AFB near Wichita Kansas. Being around Thud Drivers, Bo learned a lot about Air Force SAM and defense suppression tactics, techniques and procedures. Although Bo did not fly Wild Weasel Thuds, this F-105G from the 333rd Tactical Fighter Squadron flew missions over Vietnam and is credited with three North Vietnamese MiG kills, one by dropping centerline bomb rack off the jet which hit the MiG chasing it. The last combat cruise for LTV A-7E Corsair IIs was during Desert Storm. VA-46 Clansmen and VA-72 Blue Hawks were part of the USS John F Kennedy air wing sailing in the Red Sea. This VA-72 A-7E was the Squadron Skipper Commander JR "Shooter" Saunders jet armed for a Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses or SEAD mission into Iraq during the Desert Storm air campaign. Capt. Dave Dollarhide USN (ret) “Hide” honored us by spending an evening with us talking about his amazing career as a Naval Aviator. Currently the editor of the A-4Ever Skyhawk Journal online at Skyhawk.org, Hide brings us along on his journey from NAvCad in the mid 60s to the horrific day of July 29, 1967 while he was in his A-4 getting ready to launch from the USS Forrestal and a Zuni rocket misfired into the 400 gallon fuel tank of the A-4 parked next to him. When it was all over more than 134 Sailors and Marines had perished and another 167 including him were injured. Hear his first-hand account of that horrific day. But it doesn't end there. Hide's aviation career and excitement was just getting started! Hear about his combat missions in Vietnam, his ejection from another A-4, flying the airshow circuit in A-4s into his 70s and how he survived a mid-air collision in an RV-4 when, sadly, the other pilot was lost. This is not an episode you want to skip. Buckle in and hang on for a piece of aviation history! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1Sr6gpdNC8

Amazon announced that they will be using Nvidia's NVSwitch to create new rackscale AI platforms. This allows customers to use Nvidia technology like Grace Hopper or build something using AWS Nitro DPUs and Elastic Fabric Adapaters. That last combination doesn't use InfiniBand and moves to Ethernet. Two new chips are coming out from the Amazon labs. The first is Graviton4, the latest generation of Arm processor. Graviton4 has 50% more cores and 75% more memory bandwidth. This version of Graviton is based on the Demeter Neoverse V2 core. On the AI front Amazon also announced the next revision of their AI acceleration chip, Trainium2. This update has a 4x performance increase from the first generation and allows for liquid cooling. Trainium2 is designed to be deployed in clusters of 16 chips. In the data space, AWS made news with the GA of Bedrock, which enables customers to run foundational ML models from companies like Anthropic, Meta, and of course AWS itself. But many companies are worried about hallucination and want to include their own data in these models. That's what AWS is delivering with Guardrails, and what AWS partners are leaning into as well. First up this week is FedEx and UPS, who both seem to have too many pilots. FedEx and UPS have advised pilots to take severance offers and move to American Airlines subsidiary PSA. PSA is offering existing FedEx and USP pilots a $250,000 bonus and a left seat job in Embraer and CRJ regional jets. While $250,000 sounds like a ton of money, it's less than a year's pay for senior captains at UPS and FedEx. FedEx went as far as saying they don't have enough business to keep all their pilots fully employed. Fedex VP of flight operations said “While I understand this is not something that will appeal to every pilot, for those of you who are frustrated with current flight hours, career progression, or have just been on the fence about available options, you may consider this unique opportunity enough of an incentive to make a move,” Some speculations say FedEx may have 700 extra pilots or more as shipping volumes have turned down. We'll keep you updated if we see anything else about this! Next up this week is a man in Omaha who pointed a green laser at a helicopter. 34 Year Old Richard Detty was on a smoke break when he shined the laser at buildings to see how far it would go before turning the laser on a helicopter. The helicopter turned out to be a police helicopter who found the location of the laser using a camera array. Getty was arrested and pled guilty stating “I was not aware it was a crime,” and “I regret my actions.”. Getty was sentenced to 15 months in prison and two years of supervised release. Don't point lasers at aircraft. The third story this week is a scale B29, which collided with a golf cart injuring a bystander. The incident occurred at Glendale Airport near Kokomo, Indiana. The replica B29 has a 50 foot wingspan, is 35 feet long, and is driven by four Honda Fit car engines. The 35% replica of the B29 Superfortress was on landing when it drifted and struck a golf card causing the cart to rollover and knock a women filming the landing unconscious. The pilot of the scale replica was apparently uninjured. Crazy story! Last up this week is a lucky pilot in Florida who survived a night time crash in the Everglades. A pilot in a C172 crashed into alligator infested waters around 4AM from an altitude of 2000 feet. The aircraft, owned by a flight school wasn't reported missing until 10:30 the following morning. Miami-Dade fire Rescue located the down Skyhawk with the Pilot sitting on the wing of the sunken airplane. The pilot of the 172 was then winched into the Fire Rescue helicopter with a non-life threatening leg injury. Another crazy story with a happy outcome! Alright, that's it! Have a great weekend, and we'll see you next week! https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/florida-pilot-survives-crash-landing-and-several-hours-in-the-everglades/ https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/omaha-man-gets-15-months-in-prison-for-aiming-laser-pointer-at-police-helicopter/ https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/fedex-pilots-advised-to-work-for-regional-airline/ https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/193-ups-pilots-take-buyouts-regional-offers-soft-landing https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/woman-hurt-in-collision-with-scaled-piloted-b-29-replica/
1973 was a bleak year for the Blue Angels with exacting consequences. Three distinct incidents resulted in the destruction of six F4 Phantoms and the tragic loss of three team members, including flight leader LCDR Skip Umstead. The future seemed uncertain for the Navy's Flight Exhibition Team, which had showcased demonstrations worldwide for the last quarter-century. However, Navy Leadership recognized the Blue Angels' significant recruiting potential and initiated a plan to reorganize the Team, aligning them more effectively with the demands of their high-performance culture. In this episode of the Blue Angel Phantoms Podcast, you'll hear from Boss Tony Less, the first appointed Commanding Officer of the Blue Angels in 1974, as they transitioned from an Exhibition Team to an official Naval Squadron. Boss Less not only delves into his personal transition within the Blue Angels but also offers valuable insights into the Team's choice of the sleeker McDonnell Douglas A4 Skyhawk as their new platform, the modifications involved in becoming a squadron, and the evolution of the flight demonstration during his tenure. This interview, conducted over 25 years ago, is courtesy of aviation author and historian Nick Veronico, for his book "Blue Angels: A Flyby History." The captivating pictures in this presentation were provided by Jim Preston, the Blue Angels' official photographer during their initial years with the A4 Skyhawk. In August of 1967, Lieutenant Dave Carey was shot out of his A-4 Skyhawk over Vietnam. Soon enough, he found himself a prisoner in Hanoi, where he would subsequently be beaten, tortured and placed into solitary confinement. For six years, he languished there, kept going only by the comrades around him and an occasional pick me up from the Stoics. As Carey explained on an incredible episode of the Daily Stoic podcast, fellow prisoners would tap, “Stockdale wants you to remember what Epictetus said,” through from an adjoining cell. Carey came to understand this to mean focus on what you control, focus on the choices you can make.---And with today's Daily Stoic excerpt reading, Ryan explains why Marcus and the Stoics said time and time again that the ultimate key to success is being yourself no matter what.✉️ Sign up for the Daily Stoic email: https://dailystoic.com/dailyemail

The British landings at San Carlos were both a threat and an opportunity for the Argentinians. Obviously allowing the British a toehold on east Falklands was a strategic danger, but now they could concentrate their air attacks on the landing zone, and the ships providing support. In their first sorties, the Argentinian air force flew over open seas, searching for targets and burning up precious fuel. Now the landings had altered the odds – they could aim at the warships anchored in Falkland Sound, the waterway between the two islands. More importantly, the pilots could make their final approach over land. They'd been exposed over the ocean, its hard to hide from radar over the sea, but now they could fly the last miles over undulating and in some cases, hilly terrain. They would use these mountains and hills to hide from radar – and return to their core training which had been done over land. They'd been forced to learn how to attack ships over open sea as kind of crash course over the past month, so the pendulum of advantage actually swung back towards the Argentinians despite the landings. The damage inflicted on the British Task force had been unbelievable – Ardent was sunk, Argonaut badly damaged, Antrim, Brilliant and Broadsword all damaged by bombs which may have failed to explode, but left the engineers with a headache. They had to be cleared before the ships would be operational. The 21st May attacks had been carried out at sea level and most of the Argentinian bombs had not detonated because their fuses were set for higher altitude releases. They weren't going to make that mistake again. If the Argentinians had attacked on the day of the landings with properly fused bombs, it was estimated that around 25 percent of the English ships would have been sunk. But the bad news for the English was that there were worse days to come. The Argentinians though, were facing a hail of anti-aircraft fire and missiles when they came in for their attacks. The Skyhawk and Mirage pilots had decided they should fly the last 150 miles at only 10 feet above the water – sometimes the sea spray blinded them and the first order of duty when they arrived back at their bases was to wash down the wings to remove the salt. Then the worst day of all dawned, May 25th – Argentina's national Day. The British knew that this was going to be the day that the pilots and possibly ground forces would exert themselves – it was a day of pride.
