In this episode of Rehab Science, Dr. Tom Walters, DPT, breaks down cervical radiculopathy—a common condition involving compression or irritation of the nerve roots in the neck. He explores the relevant cervical spine anatomy, including how disc herniations or degenerative changes like bone spurs can narrow the neural foramina and impinge nerve roots, leading to symptoms that radiate from the neck into the arm and hand. Dr. Walters reviews hallmark symptoms such as radiating pain, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness, and discusses how these typically follow a dermatomal distribution depending on the affected cervical level. Dr. Walters also explains the clinical examination process for diagnosing cervical radiculopathy, including provocative orthopedic tests and the role of imaging like MRI when necessary. He outlines both medical and physical therapy approaches to treatment—ranging from anti-inflammatory medications and injections to targeted rehab strategies like cervical traction, neural mobilization, postural correction, and strengthening exercises. The episode wraps up with practical advice for managing this condition through movement-based rehabilitation. YouTube Video with Exercises Nerve Mobilization Exercises Amazon Book Link

In this episode of The Health Commute, we break down a major new study that looked at the relationship between spinal movement, pain, and disability in people with low back pain. With data from over 100 studies and 9,000 individuals, the research confirms what many movement-based professionals have observed: when the spine moves better, people often feel better. We explore how limited spinal motion is modestly—but consistently—linked to higher pain levels and more disability. We'll talk about what this means for day-to-day life, how chiropractic care and targeted exercises can help restore healthier motion, and why improving spinal mobility should be part of a bigger, holistic strategy to manage and reduce low back pain. Whether you're dealing with back pain yourself or helping someone who is, this episode sheds light on why mobility matters—and how to start making improvements that last.

The study compares the outcomes of a structured exercise regimen against basic stretching techniques, highlighting the importance of cervical extensor muscles in maintaining neck health. Key findings indicate that specific exercises lead to significant improvements in pain, disability, and muscle mass over time. Dr. Stenberg emphasizes the need for consistent patient engagement in their recovery process and provides practical applications for chiropractors to implement these findings in their practice.Dr. Stenberg's Colorado Springs, CO practice: https://www.zenithchiroco.com/Dr. Stenberg on IG: @zenith_chiro

Laura, a 60's something young lady, came into our Macomb Township Chiropractic with neck pain and low back pain. She described her pain in her neck as constant, and rated it at a 7 on a scale of 1-10 for severity. Laura said she was suffering with the pain for over a year and was finding no relief from the over the counter medications she was taking or from her doctors. She stated that she sat a lot at work, was an avid bowler, and confessed she looked at her cell phone a lot throughout the day, which was causing what we term as “text neck.” Text neck is a rather new but becoming very common problem where one puts their neck in an unnatural position repeatedly, causing the spine to realign in an unnatural position. This causes pinched nerves and misalignments, which causes pain, irritation, and inflammation of the neck. Laura's neck pain was affecting her day to day activities which included driving and sleeping, walking, working, and recreational activities. She also mentioned she recently developed knee pain which she thinks may be from walking funny due to the neck and back pain she had. We took x-rays of Laura on her first visit and after analysis from Dr. Chris found, multiple misalignments in the spine in the neck and back area were found. Laura began a specific care plan tailored to her needs, which included chiropractic adjustments, postural rehabilitation, electrical stimulation, massage bed, and ice therapy. After six weeks of therapy, another set of x-rays were taken and improvement was shown. Laura also documented her neck was “mildly better” and that she didn't wake up with pain anymore! She was also pleased her bowling had improved. Laura has been a patient with us for about 7 months now at Macomb Twp Chiropractic and her last re-exam showed even greater improvement. Today she is rating her neck pain at a 2, which is a great improvement from the 7 when she started. She has boasted she has no more back pain and is feeling well. She stated in her testimonial her daughter had noticed that she was developing a hump in the bottom of her neck due to poor posture of her head, and it's now straightened out and her posture looks so much better! Here's Laura's Macomb Township Chiropractic Neck Pain Relief YouTube Testimonial. Neck pain is one of the most common problems a person can experience. It can be caused by misalignments in the spine, traumas, poor posture, strains, disc degeneration, or arthritis. Pinching of the nerves in the neck causes pain, irritation, and inflammation in the neck and all surrounding muscles and tissues. Overuse of a cell phone today is also a common reason for neck pain. Putting the neck in an unnatural position for many hours a day can cause permanent misalignment of the neck. What are the Symptoms of Neck Pain? Pain can range from dull or excruciating, which can be in one spot or radiate to other parts of the body such as the shoulders or arms. Muscle tightness and spasms, decreased ability to turn the head, headaches, shoulder pain, numbness and tingling, and loss of strength in the arms or hands are also symptoms. What Kind of Problems Arise from Neck Pain? Headaches, spasms, difficulty sleeping, trouble performing daily activities, turning your head, sitting, standing, bending, driving, working, and even relaxing. Constant neck pain can cause emotional problems as well. How Does Chiropractic Help? Chiropractic adjustments help relieve neck pain and stiffness by correcting misalignments in the spine, increasing joint mobility and mechanics, and reducing pressure on the nerves. This increases range of motion, releases pinched nerves, reduces inflammation, and decreases pain, stiffness, and soreness. What Does Macomb Township Chiropractic Offer? Dr. Chris McNeil performs many different options and treatments for neck pain. Each patient is given a unique treatment plan based on their x-rays, pain level, and individual expectations. Treatments include manual manipulation of the neck, as well as adjustments without cracking. These include electrical stimulation, postural rehabilitation therapy, disc/spinal decompression therapy for the neck (with the use of the computerized decompression table), massage tables, and heat and cold therapy.

In Episode 74 of the Physiotutors podcast, host Kai is joined by Dr. Erik Thoomes, an expert in musculoskeletal conditions, particularly cervical radiculopathy. Dr. Thoomes provides an in-depth discussion on cervical radiculopathy, distinguishing it from nonspecific neck pain. He explains that cervical radiculopathy involves radiating arm pain due to nerve root irritation or compression, often caused by disc herniation or spondylotic changes, contrasting it with lumbar radiculopathy. The episode emphasizes the importance of thorough patient history in diagnosis and suggests a cluster of tests including Spurling's test and neural tension tests to improve diagnostic accuracy. Dr. Thoomes also challenges the reliability of traditional dermatomes and myotomes, advocating for individualized assessment and treatment strategies. The conversation covers various treatment options, highlighting the ineffectiveness of cervical traction and suggesting neurodynamic mobilization, spinal manipulative therapy, and targeted exercises. Dr. Thoomes advises adapting management strategies from acute to chronic stages and stresses the role of patient education and self-management. The episode also touches on the limited role of imaging unless necessary and discusses the importance of differentiating cervical radiculopathy from other conditions. Dr. Thoomes calls for more research in areas like epidemiological data and neurodynamic mobilization and shares clinical gems for effective management. The episode concludes with an emphasis on individualized patient care and encourages questions and further discussion from listeners. "Mommy! Mommy! Ethan said my name!"Isaac was blown away that his little brother actually said his name. For months now, Ethan would call both of his older brothers, Isaiah. Ethan adores his big brothers and because of that, there are two words he can say the clearest; "Isaiah" and the word "no." The word "no" is usually directed toward Ellen and I, which is often accompanied with aggressive hand-waving and head-shaking. For example, "Ethan, eat your food"="NO!" or "Ethan, don't climb on the table"= "NO!" or "Ethan, it's time for a nap"= "NO!"Now, Ethan has a new favorite word, "Isaac." Isaac smiles every time he hears his name. Our own name is the most important sound in the human language. It is directly linked to our identity and who we are. For example, what's the question you ask when a pregnant woman reveals the gender of her unborn child? "What is your baby's name?" You had a name before you were even born.In our fast-paced, high-stress, and over-stimulated society we often struggle remembering people's names. This is not due to a lack of care but potentially due to a lack of presence in the moment of introduction. Our minds wander off more often than we would like, even during important events in our lives. My encouragement is to remember and use people's names and watch the joy rise in that person. You had a name and you were loved before you were even born. TWC Out rowAre you or a love one seeking to improve overall health naturally and to decrease pain? For 35 years, Kandie-Rae suffered from crippling pain caused by 3 cervical disc bulges (C1-C2, C3-C4, C6-C7) and 2 lumbar disc bulges (L4-L5, S1), sciatica, thoracic nerve pain, arm tingling and numbness, and chronic neck pain. This podcast shares how Kandie-Rae became pain free, avoided surgery, and got off all medications at 56 years old - when Doctors told her she would never fix her back. She wasted over $20,000 in the medical system desperately searching for relief, but nothing worked—until the Whealth Limitless Program. Before Whealth, she tried it all: ❌ Chiropractic care – Multiple visits per week, but relief never lasted ❌ Acupuncture – Temporary improvement, but pain always came back ❌ Physiotherapy – Generic exercises that didn't address the root cause ❌ Cortisone injections (2 in her neck) – One provided 3 weeks of relief, the other did nothing ❌ Medications: • Gabapentin – Nerve pain relief that didn't last • Muscle relaxers – Left her feeling groggy with no real improvement • Nerve blockers – Zero long-term results Finally, Doctors told her surgery was her only option (which she did not want to do) For 35 years, she lived in fear, unable to trust her body. She could barely walk, had numbness in her face, arms, and legs, and even experienced pseudo-seizures from the pain. She thought she was out of options—until she found an approach that finally worked... our LIMITLESS PROGRAM. Today, she says she has 0/10 pain in her body... she is off all medications, and stronger than ever. In this episode, Kandie-Rae, 56 years old, shares: ✅ Why everything failed her for 35 years in the medical system ✅ How she healed her disc bulges without surgery ✅ The exact movements and mindset shifts that changed everything ✅ How she got rid of sciatica, nerve pain, and fear around movementIf you're struggling with disc bulges, sciatica, or chronic nerve pain, watch this. Evan Marshall Mosier is finally here. He is alive and well! However, a few months ago, we didn't think that was the case. While camping on Memorial Day weekend, Ellen thought she was undergoing a miscarriage because of an abnormal amount of blood she was experiencing. We have never been through anything like that before and it was beginning to break our hearts. Despite the abnormal amount of blood, Ellen continued to feel morning sickness as if her pregnancy was still occurring. Her hormones hadn't returned back to "normal", non-pregnant, levels. This was a constant reminder of what she had lost. We made contact with the doctor's office about our sudden loss and with a call back, they asked for her to come into the office to have an ultrasound with a possible D&C. As we arrived to the doctor's office and entered the waiting room, there was a weird feeling as we were surrounded by happy, pregnant couples. Another reminder of our loss.Sometimes in our darkest moments, God shows up and shows off. Our ultrasound tech was unaware of our situation. All of a sudden, the tech casually says, "There's your baby with a heart rate of 154 BPM" as she's staring as the ultrasound monitor. Let's just say we were shocked. Fast forward to today, Evan is well-loved and wants constant cuddles from his big brothers who, of course, fight each other for the opportunity. We had 2 fears going into this 4th child of ours. First being a lack of time or presence from Ellen and I for each boy. We don't want them to grow up fighting for their individual attention with us. The second fear was, do I have enough love in the tank for a 4th boy? The other 3 have it all! However, what I quickly discovered while holding Evan for the first time, is that love is a limitless resource.TWC Out rowAre you or a love one seeking to improve overall health naturally and to decrease pain? sure to illness and recent injuries (see title), we were not able to give you a show this week. We'll be back with a new episode soon. Until then, dear listener, stay spooky!
We need a Revolution, not a Resolution!I try not to use profanity in these emails, but we need to talk about a serious topic. The topic is... exercise. I'm sorry for my language. If you're like me, you get an allergic reaction when words of this nature come up. I generally get red in the face, sweat profusely, and even hyperventilate thus an allergic reaction. However, many people at this time of year are ready for a fresh start. All of us have our reasons: unsatisfied with how we look, health concerns, lack of energy, and so on. Regardless of the reason, together we need to make this year the year we stay consistent and stick to our goals. We need a revolution rather than another New Year's resolution. In order to make any serious change, we need to start small and simple. What is the best way to eat an elephant...one bite at a time. The KISS (keep it simple silly) principle will take us much further than we think is possible. Here is my simple suggestion. Push-ups and squats. No weights or gym memberships are needed. Push-ups and squats cover the majority of the muscle groups and your body provides the resistance needed to challenge yourself for strength and endurance. Here is your exercise prescription (21 days).Day 1: 1 push-up and 1 squat.Day 2: 2 push-ups and 2 squats.Day 3: 3 push-ups and 3 squats... ...Day 21: 21 push-ups and 21 squats. I hope you find this encouraging and something that is easily attainable! If you have questions, let us know through email, phone, or text! Do you only talk about Yourself?"I got a fire truck for Christmas." -Boy"I baked a mountain of cookies." -Girl"My dog peed on our Christmas tree." -Boy"I don't like green bean casserole." -Girl Have you ever listened to little kids communicate with each other? Often it seems like 2 conversations are happening at the same time. Each kid is eager to have someone listen to them and their story. Usually, this results in them not listening to the other person but waiting for their chance to speak again. How often do we, as adults, do this? We are stressed and busy, trying to be polite but not actually listening. "I've got bigger problems than to listen to your problems." When we are so focused on ourselves and our problems, we give partial attention to our friends and family. We then become known for our absences. You're known for not being fully present or even worse, you become known for only talking about yourself. You're a mean one Mrs. GrinchThere is a restaurant that our boys love to go to, but this restaurant makes Ellen and I turn Grinch green...Cracker Barrel! Our boys' love for this place is the same reason we despise it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the food. Actually, the food is quite delicious. My question to the Cracker Barrel owners is, why? Why all the toys? Why does taking the boys out to eat turn into Christmas in July? Yes, I already know what you are going to say. "You don't have to buy them a toy every time you go." You would be correct and that is what a good parent would do. However, the boys have more toys than Walmart (slight exaggeration) because their dad says "yes" a lot. Late one night, when all the Mosier boys were asleep (including myself), the pregnant Grinch came out to organize and remove unused toys. Let's just say my F-150 was fully loaded down. The pregnant Grinch smiled and waved as she drove off to Goodwill. Lucky for the boys, Christmas is right around the corner and their jolly father will make up for what that mean pregnant Grinch lady did with all the toys (just kidding). What is more important to the boys is our presence rather than the presents this Christmas. Often, we find ourselves busy with a project or tired from work. We aren't fully present in the moment. We hope during this season you can take time with your friends and family and be present.TWC Out rowAre you or a love one seeking to improve overall health naturally and to decrease pain? “Apple! Apple!” Ethan pointed for an apple from the counter. What he thought were apples were actually homegrown tomatoes. Ellen sighed knowing it was pointless to argue with a toddler so she handed him a tomato. She glanced back at me and smiled as my jaw hit the floor. The sheer look of disgust on Ethan's face was priceless. Lesson learned, if mom says its a tomato, it's probably a tomato.Life lessons are learned from experiences. This is where wisdom is developed and how we choose to respond to the experience. You have probably heard the old saying, "Our wisdom comes with age but sometimes age comes alone." Our wisdom is developed by how we respond to adversities and challenges that we face. Ethan didn't ask for any more tomato- apples because his 2-year old mind just got a little wiser. What is great about wisdom is that it can be passed down. Majority of us have someone that look up to us. All of us have people we look up to and are inspired by throughout our lives. My encouragement today is simple: share and listen. Often, we are willing to share about a new restaurant or the new local boutique down the street. However, how often do we share the life lessons we have learned? Or maybe some of the adversities/challenges we have overcome? How often do we genuinely listen to the wisdom being given to us even when it's not what we want to hear?"No Ethan, that is not an apple."TWC Out rowAre you or a love one seeking to improve overall health naturally and to decrease pain? Can Scoliosis Cause Neck Pain? Understanding the Spinal Connection In this informative episode of our podcast, we explore a common concern among individuals with scoliosis: whether this condition can lead to neck pain and other related symptoms. Dr. Tony Nalda delves into how scoliosis, a complex spinal condition characterized by a sideways curvature of the spine, can affect not only the lumbar or thoracic regions but also extend its influence to the cervical spine. Scoliosis and Its Effects on the Spine Definition and Diagnosis: Scoliosis is identified by a curvature of the spine that measures 10 degrees or greater, often accompanied by a rotational component. This condition doesn't just distort the spine's normal alignment but also impacts the surrounding muscles, nerves, and ligaments. Three-Dimensional Impact: While commonly perceived as a condition affecting only the thoracic or lumbar spine, scoliosis can indeed influence the cervical spine. The condition's three-dimensional nature means it can cause changes in both the frontal and side views of the spine, leading to a variety of physical symptoms. How Scoliosis Can Lead to Neck Pain Cervical Scoliosis: Direct curvature within the cervical spine can lead to stiffness, soreness, and reduced range of motion, potentially causing pain that radiates to the shoulders and arms. Compensatory Changes: Even when the primary scoliotic curves are located in the thoracic or lumbar regions, compensatory changes can occur in the cervical spine. These changes may lead to abnormal postures such as forward head posture, which strains the neck muscles and ligaments. Loss of Normal Curvature: Scoliosis can lead to the loss of the cervical spine's normal lordotic curve, known as "military neck" or cervical kyphosis. This straightening of the neck disrupts the spine's natural ability to balance and absorb shocks, contributing to increased strain and pain. Secondary Effects and Symptoms Neurological Issues: As the spinal cord and nerve roots become affected by the altered spinal alignment, individuals may experience numbness, tingling, or radiating pain in the arms and fingers. Headaches: Changes in cervical alignment can affect the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and blood to the brain, potentially leading to tension headaches or migraines. Treatment Focus: Symptom Management vs. Addressing Root Causes Symptomatic Relief: Many patients seek treatment for the secondary symptoms of scoliosis, such as neck pain or headaches. Traditional treatments may include pain management through medications or injections, which can provide temporary relief but do not address the underlying spinal deformities. Proactive and Corrective Approaches: Effective management of scoliosis involves addressing the root causes—namely, the spinal misalignments and curvature. By focusing on correcting these issues through specialized exercises, bracing, or other non-invasive methods, it is possible to achieve more sustainable results and prevent further progression of the condition. Conclusion Understanding the comprehensive impact of scoliosis, especially its potential to cause neck pain and other related issues, is crucial for effective treatment. Patients are encouraged to seek care from specialists who focus not just on symptom relief but on proactive, corrective measures to address the spinal deformities inherent to scoliosis. This approach can help mitigate the long-term effects of the condition, improving quality of life and reducing the likelihood of future complications. Green death. If you are involved with dirt track racing, you may be familiar with this terminology. Apparently, after chatting with Emily and Kenrick (my future brother-in-law) about their racing dreams and goals, certain engine types cannot be stored and forgotten about during the winter. After eating hamburgers and hotdogs at Ethan's 2nd birthday party, Kenrick told me about how his car sat out for too long and it wouldn't start the other night. He got right to work on the carburetor. (If you are like me and didn't know what a carburetor does, I googled it for us. It's used to mix fuel and air together before sending the mix into the engine cylinders for ignition, powering the vehicle.) Since he is running an alcohol engine, it has the ability to develop an algae mold substance in the carburetor that could tear up the engine.Often, we forget that we are running a really expensive engine...our bodies. Similar to Kenrick's racecar requiring alcohol as fuel, our body needs fuel to run properly. The fuel we put into our body has a direct correlation to our health and performance. Another aspect of this lesson I learned from my racing friend, is that we have to rev up our engines. Sometimes, we have to move our bodies and get our heart rate up. What this does, is increase our immune system and burns off some of that green sludge of death (viruses and bacteria.) You essentially sweat it out. We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family. If you have questions, concerns, or even prayer requests regarding your fitness goals; feel free to email us back. "He's blue, why is he blue?" That was my initial thought when Ethan was born, 2 years ago. The first week of his life was spent in the NICCU fighting to breathe. We spent Thanksgiving in the hospital that year. Often, I wondered how I was going to drive home with an empty car seat. During that time, while I was holding him in the middle of the night with wires and tubes everywhere, I made a promise to him and myself that he would never have to see me hooked up to wires and monitors. At the time I was closer to 400lbs than I was 300lbs. My weight and my health continued to get out of control. Fast forward 2 years, Ethan is walking, talking, and table climbing; a tyrannosaurus of a toddler. Even with my ups and downs, I'm down a little over 50lbs. For many of us, there is no easy path for our weight loss journey. However, I will give you one tip during your Thanksgiving and even set you up for success in the upcoming weeks. Drink water and lots of it! The rule of thumb is to drink half of your body weight in fluid ounces. Therefore, if you weigh 200lbs, then you should drink 100 ounces of water per day. There are many benefits to drinking water such as increased metabolism, more energy, and satisfied stomach. This simple tip will keep you energetic and from over-eating this Thanksgiving. You will be left with more energy to be present with your loved ones during this season. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving! I am so thankful for you!
