In south Minneapolis, the sound of cars driving by is like white noise. Blue bags hang from maple trees that line the sides of city streets. The Native American Community Development Institute, or NACDI, has been busy collecting sap from neighborhood trees in recent weeks for the purpose of sugar bushing.Sugar bushing is the process of collecting and boiling down sap into syrup or even pure sugar. Gloria Iacono works with NACDI as the Four Sisters Urban Farm manager. She is leading the project this spring. “You go into hibernation in the winter and then you get that nice, like, first spring day, and it's just something that you can gather around. It's a practice that you can build community around,” Iacono said. She has had the support of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, since it's the first time NACDI is leading an urban sugar bush. Forest Hunt is a plant scientist with the East Phillips Neighborhood Institute and is a direct descendent of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians in North Dakota. They say sugar bushing is a springtime tradition in Native communities. “It has been happening in Woodland Native tribes for over a millennium,” Hunt said. NACDI has been collecting sap from Center School, Bii Di Gain elder housing, and South High School, where a demonstration was held. Hunt showed students how to properly identify when a tree can be tapped and how to tap a tree. “You can always tell that it's time to tap when the snow starts to melt and when you start to see little patches of dirt or dead grass. That's around when you should start tapping your maples,” Hunt explained. Hunt then drilled a small hole into the tree before using a hammer to lightly tap a metal spile, like a spout, in the rest of the way until water-like sap began to drip out. Several stepped up to try the sap straight from the source after being invited by Hunt. The taste? They say it was sweet. Iacono has been boiling the sap into syrup right at the organization's urban farm in East Phillips. Community members were invited to watch the process of how sap turns into syrup. “We have a steel drum, with the top cut off, that fits pans in the top. And you build a fire within the drum, and then that boils the sap,” Iacono said. She says five gallons of sap will boil down to about a mason jar's worth of syrup. At one community boil, Turtle Mountain Band member Tyra Payer demonstrated how to turn maple syrup into candies. They say although they tap trees outside of the metro, there is cultural value to be had in urban sugar bushing. “There are teachings that only happen at this time of year,” they said. “The teachings that we have around maple, and making maple sugar and what our community looks like and how we support each other.” Hunt says maple syrup has been a significant food historically alongside wild rice. “It's really important for us to continue practicing these traditions, because it allows us to continue to have that, that sense of self, that sovereignty that we really need,” Hunt said. With the amount of sap that the community has collected over the course of a few weeks, Iacono says they will produce about one gallon of pure maple syrup. The syrup will be distributed to those who helped collect the sap.Correction (March 20, 2025): A previous version of this story incorrectly identified Forest Hunt's affiliation. The story has been updated.

As a central player in Minneapolis' vibrant and complex community, Minnneapolis Public Schools serves over 35,000 students each year and requires sufficient resources to create truly welcoming and safe spaces where all young people have the resources and support they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom and beyond graduation. Minneapolis Public Schools has balanced its budget for the past three years with the help of nearly $262 million in federal pandemic funds, nonrenewable revenue that is set to expire late next year in 2024. The district's most recent five-year budget projection predicts an "imminent financial crisis" due to declining enrollment and a failure to cut costs. Both strategic budget cuts and investments are critical to ensure student learning. This EDTalk features presentations by Rochelle Cox, MPS Superintendent, and Ibrahima Diop, MPS Senior Officer of Finance and Operations. Following the presentations, there is a panel discussion, including Amira Ali, student at South High School and member of the MPS CityWide Student Leadership Board; Tara FitzGerald, principal at Andersen United Middle School; Teresa Gloppen, Minneapolis Public School teacher on special assignment; Briana Thompson, parent from North Community High Schools; and Elleni Fellows, parent from Lyndale Elementary School This EDTalk was recorded at Icehouse on October 2nd, 2023. EDTalks is co-presented by Achieve Twin Cities and Graves Ventures, a project of the Graves Foundation. Arturo Madriz is a 2022 National Proficiency Finalist in the category of Agricultural Mechanics and Repair. He is also a senior at Madera South High School in California, and has a big time job in his father's trucking company. Just this year Arturo started going out on his own to repair damaged or broken down semis from the families business. He has driven up to 3 hours to take care of a truck that was broke down on the side of the road. Madera sits right on California State Highway 99, which has more north/south truck traffic than any roadway, including interstates, in the United States. It is narrow and busy with vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed. Arturo had to replace two trailer tires on this roadway this summer. This is dangerous and stressful work. And, he doesn't just switch out wheels. He breaks the bead off of the damaged tire and re-seats a new tire on to the existing wheel. To further help the family business, which his father started years ago after emigrating from Mexico, Arturo is planning on going to a diesel mechanic program after high school. One of the biggest expenses the business has is paying for expert diesel mechanic work, and Arturo plans to learn what he needs so that they can reduce that expense.

Denver South High School is facing severe backlash from parents...after administrators presented students with a video teaching them to not call the police. Denver South High School showed students an instructional video...explaining what to do in tense situations. We reveal and react to the video presented by Denver South High School. We discuss how public schools across America continue to propagandize children. We theorize that the Denver Public School Board intentionally presented this video...and offer our solution to this problem.
We begin with a recap of South High School's video assembly yesterday and calls. This is a continuation of the liberal. progressive agenda and good luck complaining about it. More on the South Principal Goss. We welcome back the "Hump Day Hurdle" with Blake Olson via phone! We talk UNC Bears (Blake knows stories of nearly 100 players via number!) and remember Len Dawson. We wrap with "The Red Violin" trailer.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We begin with a bit on Kevin Priola and then move to an education-themed start to the program. South High School students get a pathetic dose of liberalism and indoctrination on their first day of 2022-23 school year yesterday. We play the audio of the YouTube video delivered by a transgender. Calls and texts. President Biden announces (as expected) levels of student loan forgiveness up to $20K. On tomorrow's ag business episode we are profiling a very interesting entrepreneur in the wine business. It occurred to me that this would be a great opportunity to return to a very impressive FFA interview I did years ago with Mark Cavellero, who at that time was growing grapes for champagne that he was too young to drink! The original show notes are below: INTRODUCING MARK CAVALLERO! Our guest today is a finalist for the star farmer award at the 2017 National FFA Convention. Mark Cavallero is studying plant science at Reedley Jr. College in Reedley, California. During high school he started farming grapes and almonds on his family's farm in Madera, California. While Mark was farming he started trying a new variety of almonds that did not require him to bring in bees to pollinate. He stated that move has saved him a lot of money in operating costs and it has worked out well. Mark also grows Thompson Seedless Grapes, and the primary use of his grapes is for the production of champagne at a nearby winery. He is looking forward to turning 21 in about 1 month and being able to taste what his grapes finally turn into. SUPERVISED AGRICULTURAL EXPERIENCE: Grape And Almond Farming HIGH SCHOOL: Madera South High School; Madera, California MASCOT: Stallions FFA ADVISOR: Tim Deniz CONTACT INFORMATION FOR MARK CAVALLERO: Click on the picture below to be taken to the Madera South High School Ag. In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants. With your donations, more students can get this head start - pay it forward. REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA: Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world. FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food. Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation. The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth. Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store: "Because American farmers are able to provide for so many of us, they give more and more of us the freedom to pursue goals and livelihoods beyond growing the food we need to survive." U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack More Places You Can Listen to Off-Farm Income And Matt Brechwald:
As COVID rises, a restaurant server in Burbank says customers are pressuring her to remove her mask, but she doesn't qualify for health insurance due to work limited hours. In the volunteer-run West Adams bookstore called All Power Books, neighbors receive food, clothes and community. Now they face an uncertain future. This week, KCRW's Young Creators Project is highlighting the work of two visual artists: Minnie Learner from Polytechnic High School, and Arianna Louie from South High School.
INTRODUCING SAMUEL JIMENEZ! Buckle up to learn something new in this episode. I sure know that I did when I was conducting the interview! Samuel Jimenez has just graduated high school, and he has just been awarded a California State Proficiency Award in Specialty Animal Production Placement. How you ask? By raising thousands of Koi Fish in his families business in Madera, California. Sam's parents have a business called Mad Town Koi Fish, and she sell Koi all over the world. In addition to the production of fish they produce a high quality manure/fertilizer for their business partner's pistachio orchard with the waste of the Koi. Sam has been learning this business inside and out over the years, and now when a buyer is at the farm to purchase fish it is Sam who takes out the nets and catches the fish for sale. During our interview Sam told me about a type of Koi called a "Tancho". This is a very rare and very desirable pattern on the body of the Koi that results with a red circle on its forehead. While Same told me that Koi will sell for $5-$7 per typical fish, a Tancho can sell for up to $25,000! This fish business is very much like other livestock businesses. They even have a breed organization and they compete in shows for the grand champion Koi. I learned a ton in this interview, and you will too! Presenter: Jeannine Erickson, Writer's Room Manager, 826 MSP Jeannine Erickson from the arts education nonprofit 826 MSP discusses the importance of creating anti-racist and anti-oppressionist “third spaces” to support students in the classroom and other settings, such as the organization's Writer's Room at South High School. The creation of “third space” is rooted in abolitionist teaching practices and requires loving accountability, de-stigmatization of mental health, and de-centering of whiteness to truly support youth people in life and education. In her EDTalk, Jeannine shares how third space that is rooted in community-building, Afro-futurist theories and teachings, and decolonizing the lives, minds, and dreamscape of historically marginalized folks, can reshape and provide opportunities for rebirth for all young people, regardless of race or racial identity. This EDTalks is titled “PSEO As a Bridge from High School to College” Our featured speaker is Maria Wright. Maria is director of dual enrollment at St. Cloud State University. Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) – also known as dual enrollment – provides an affordable way for high school students to experience college and earn college credit by completing courses at eligible postsecondary institutions. PSEO has grown rapidly in Minnesota over the past twenty years, but there are wide gaps in participation between white students and students of color, English language learners and low-income students. A former PSEO participant at South High School, she's passionate about increasing postsecondary education access for students of color, students from lower socioeconomic status and first-generation college students. Maria has also worked as assistant registrar at Troy University in Alabama and in various roles at the University of Minnesota's College in the Schools concurrent enrollment program. She earned her MBA at Augsburg University and is currently completing a doctoral program in higher education at St. Cloud State University. Maria will draw on her experience as a PSEO participant and higher education leader to discuss the great benefits of PSEO and how it can help close education equity gaps by providing a bridge between high school and postsecondary education. As an advocate for young scholars, she argues that we must challenge current paradigms around PSEO, particularly the way it is funded. What are students actually looking for when it comes to changes in public education? Is our community truly centering and valuing the voices of the kids experiencing the systems that we’ve built for them? Today, we’re talking with two young organizers; both alumni of South High School in Worcester. And while we talk at a local level, this conversation echoes into so many other districts where students are working to have their voices heard. #PublicHearingPodcast

INTIMATE DISCLOSURES by Lawrence W. Manglitz This book contains selections of poetry and prose from the work of an aging Midwestern man–looking back at people, events, sexual experiences, cultures, and the church that has formed him. The content draws on his childhood, family, World War I and II, and summers in Spain. The Villa in the Algarve, Portugal, teaching in Turkey, two gay poets, and his revisioning of the myths, history, rituals, and the incarnation of his Catholic faith as he lives and approaches his death. He embraces the gift of life and the wonder of consciousness. Written with vivid imagery and unusual events in free verse, this will give you a fresh vision, sometimes startling, always disclosing the intimacy and consciousness of personal life. Lawrence W. Manglitz was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, November 24, 1938. When he was a small boy, his parents moved to Bridgeman, then to Holland, Michigan. Despite the conservative nature of that community and his family church, his childhood was a time of great imagination and wanderings on his bike and adventures in Dunn’s woods. In his youth, his life became more complex as he became aware of his homosexuality. He didn’t publically come out until he was twenty-eight. In 1961, he graduated from Godben College. Later, he earned an MA from the University of Michigan and a PhD from Michigan State University. In 1961, he began teaching at Talas American School, near Kayseri and later at Tarsus College in Southern Turkey. Between 1961 and 1965, he traveled in the Middle East and in Southern Europe, spending his summers in Ibiza, Spain. Later, after returning to America, he visited Turkey, Spain, England, and the Czech Republic many times. After returning to America in 1965, he taught at South High School; in 1968, he taught at the community college until his retirement in 2002. During much of the time after his return, he was active in the Episcopal church. Presently, he lived in Michigan with his three cats: James, Cecilia, and Zachariah. He has published poetry in Matrix and The James White Review. https://www.stratton-press.com/books/intimate-disclosures/ http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/strapress4.mp3

How might an EL teacher and his dynamic newcomers class react to having a journalist embed herself in their classroom for an entire school year? What partnerships might they form to learn more about students and what does this tell us about the resources schools have and do not have at their disposal? What are some of the best things about working with students who come with such a wide array of backgrounds, experiences, and skills? We discuss these questions and much more in our conversation with Eddie Williams. Eddie’s newcomers class at Denver’s South High School was profiled as part of Helen Thorpe’s latest book entitled The Newcomers. In her book, Thorpe describes Eddie by stating, “He was like a gardener, excited by seedlings. Where others might see students with limitations, or students who were lagging behind their peers, Mr. Williams saw a room filled with kids who had lived through titanic experiences, teenagers who could do anything at all, once they accepted whatever sort of history they had brought with them and grasped the full extent of the opportunity lying ahead. He often told me that he felt lucky to work in a room like this one - a room that spoke of just how big the world was, and how mysterious.” After speaking with him as a long awaited follow up to last season’s episode with Helen Thorpe, I think this description is far superior to any bio I could provide. Humble, passionate, and thoughtful, Eddie embodies the kind of educator who helps makes a difference in students’ lives by seeing all the assets they bring to our schools and communities. Eddie and I had a lot to discuss, so this is part 1 of a 2 part series. If you haven’t heard our conversation with Helen Thorpe, you can find it on Highest Aspirations Season 1 / Episode 19 anywhere you listen to podcasts. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/highest-aspirations/message

Renee Wasinger can be described as many things, most notably as an enterprising, enthusiastic, and energetic educator! If you visited her classroom in Olathe, Kansas, you no doubt would see her TBWA philosophy in action: Teaching By Walking Around. Whether it's checking in with her students on their projects, creating a help center to build interest at her high school or pushing for universal access to personal finance, Renee's clearly demonstrates her passion for helping students everyday. As a store operations leader at Wal-Mart, she gained valuable insights about the skills her students will need to succeed in the "real world" and she makes sure they leave her classroom with those skills. Enjoy!

Show Summary: (Full Transcript Below) October 11 is White Cane Day in Minnesota and the Blindness community came out strong to support the awareness of the White Cane. Speakers shared the history of White Cane day and others talked about the freedom and independence the white cane brings to them. The Minnesota State Academy for the Blind shared their voices and sang aloud in the Capital’s Rotundra. With the support of the local Lions Clubs, MSAB, NFB of MN and Blind, Inc. the White Cane Day event was a great event with a lot of participation. From joining in on the song to marching in the walk from the St. Paul Capital to the St. Paul Cathedral and bac, participants chatted and talked while blazing through the chilly and windy Autumn day in Minnesota. As Carol Pankow put it, “Rain, sleet or snow, we do it and the weather doesn’t stop us. We just keep moving and grooving with life. Voices at the Capital 2018 John Jasinski: So, on behalf of governor Mark Dayton, I have a proclamation. Alycia Howard: Hi, I am Alycia Howard. Brian Daniels: My name's Brian Daniels. I'm the representative from the Faribault area. Holly Nordmeyer: My name is Holly Nordmeyer. I'm from the Minnesota State Academies. John Jasinski: So, what does White Cane Day mean to me? My name is Senator John Jasinski. I'm from district 24 where the Minnesota Academies have a facility. So, I believe it's important to raise the awareness on White Cane Day and what it is and making sure that the people with disabilities, blind disabilities are safe on their streets in a safe area so they can walk and navigate through our communities. Trume: My name is Trume and I feel like coming to White Cane Day means a lot because I know that I ... Although I've been blind for a really long time, I can still use my resources to my advantage. Kristina T.: My name is Kristina Tinason. I am a teacher for the blind and visually impaired and I come today to celebrate equality and just awareness in general. White Cane Safety Day. Quinn H.: My name is Quinn Hobble. I come to White Cane Day because being blind myself, I have seen just how much the long white cane gives me freedom and being a contract worker for the state of Minnesota teaching cane travel, I get to see how much freedom the long white cane gives each and every one of my students on a daily basis. Sheila K.: My name is Sheila Koenig. I'm the transition coordinator at State Services for the Blind and I come to White Cane Day because it's a gathering of blind people from all over the state and we're here to show that we have a voice and a presence. I think it's amazing to kick off the program at the state capital, which is a place that really symbolizes people's voices. Ryan Strunk: Back in 1928 I believe it was, we passed a resolution that said that we were approving a new travel device for getting safely across the street. And that new travel device was a whistle. The idea was you'd come up to the curb and you'd pull out your whistle and you would blow on your whistle until somebody heard you and came out and you would say, can you please help me across the street? Eva: I'm Eva. White Cane Day is spreading awareness about blindness and the use of the canes and who we are and that we are out there. Brian Daniels: My name's Brian Daniels. I'm the representative from the Faribault area. I've been in the legislature for four years and I have to tell you, this White Cane event I think is the best of all our functions that we have. It's showing that people are not disabled if they're blind or disabled in different way, and I love that. I love the school they have down in Faribault. They do a good job for all of our kids and I'm just proud to represent this area. Carol Pankow: I'm Carol Pankow, Director of State Services for the Blind. Well, White Cane Day, I think, and I love it especially today because it's crappy out, the weather's crazy, but it's just representative of what people go through every single day. Whether it's rain, sleet, snow, beautiful weather, there are people who are blind, visually impaired, deaf-blind, all around this country going out, doing their thing. They're working, they're going to school, they're making it happen and they don't just stay in 'cause the weather got bad. You can't. You gotta keep moving and grooving with your life. So, I just think this day is really representative of all things that ... It's like another day, but it symbolizes what blind, visually impaired and deaf-blind people stand for and that they're able to go out and move around with confidence and do their thing and live their life. Greg Smith: I'm Greg Smith and I'm here with a group of students from South High School and we're coming just to celebrate the freedom that the white canes provide the students and their independent. We think this is a great event. Nick: My name is Nick. I come to White Cane Day because it's nice to see that there are other people that are visually impaired like me. Ryan Strunk: Even though we had this idea in mind that it was now National White Cane Safety Day on October 15th, the public still wasn't always cool with it. You'd walk into a shop that sold glassware with your cane and you could be kicked out or you'd walk into a restaurant with your guide dog and you could be kicked out and so we started fighting across all 50 states to make sure that we had the right to participate. Nadia: Hi, my name is Nadia and I'm a student at BLIND, Inc. What White Cane Day means to me is that this is a day of pride of us using our white cane. Our white cane shows that we can go anywhere and we're not scared to do anything out in the public. It's a symbol for people to know that we're out here doing our thing just like they are. I love using my white cane every day. I have so much pride in using it and I'm so glad that today we get to celebrate a day like this. Jeff Thompson: Raise your canes. Nadia: Oh, that'd be cool. I'm open to that. Speaker 16: Yeah. I think today is really just good about for the public awareness of people ... Nadia: I know, yeah. Speaker 16: There's a lot of people in the general public ... Nadia: They don't understand it. Speaker 16: But no. They don't know anyone who's blind, so they're not really exposed to it. So, I think today is just really good ... It's a good day to just, yeah. Kind of makeup. This is one person. Nadia: Right. Speaker 17: It's like a chance to stand out from the crowd and understand that even though we're visually impaired or blind, we can still do whatever we set our mind to do. Anya Swenson: My name is Anya Swenson and I come here to raise awareness about safety and about this important issue. Ryan Strunk: Because that white came is not only a symbol of who we are, but it is at the core of what makes us independent. Josie Lion: Hi, like John Davis said, my name is Josie Lion. I found about ... My disability about four years ago in Oklahoma and sadly Oklahoma doesn't have a lot of support, so I didn't really get my cane until about two years ago when I moved here. So, when I was in Oklahoma I was afraid and scared 'cause I didn't have anything to help me figure out what to do. So, I was not social. I was not getting good things. I was just ... I just lived in my own little room, kind of like a hermit crab. When I got here to Minnesota, I got my cane. I felt more positive and I felt more social. I finally went to my first party. So, finally did clubs after school. I finally made friends and actually did things with them and I wouldn't be able to if it wasn't for my white cane. Kristen O.: Hi. I'm Kristen Orien, state specialist for the blind and visually impaired for the Minnesota Department of Education and I come to White Cane Day to celebrate independent travel. Terry Wilding: Hello, my name is Terry Wilding. I'm not blind, but I am deaf. What I see for White Cane Day means what we can do to spread awareness about what our students need. The State Academy is what the blind community needs. How we can better advocate for more legislation and changes within our communities as well as changing the culture so that way people are aware of us and willing to work with us from this point forward. Brent: My names Brent. I'm a new student. I've only attended BLIND, Inc. for about a month now. Jeff Thompson: Oh, good for you. Brent: I am from Hastings, Minnesota. White Cane Day means to me that it's a chance for everybody out in the big city and everywhere just to understand that there are visually impaired and blind people out there who deserve to be respected for their blindness, treated fairly just as anybody else and when it comes to street crossings and everything, they're just real willing to ... Jeff Thompson: At least slow down a little bit, right? Brent: At least slow down or give us the opportunity to cross. Yeah, yeah. John Jasinski: Blind pedestrians have the right of way. Any person operating a motor vehicle in this state shall bring such motor vehicle to a stop and give the right away at any intersection of any street, avenue, alley, or other public highway to a blind pedestrian who was carrying a cane, predominantly white, metallic in color, or with or without a red tip or using a guide dog. Jenny P.: My name is Jenny Pelletier. I'm the music therapist at MSAB and we're excited to be here with all these other folks from Minnesota and celebrate today. Dan Wenzel: Dan Wenzel. I'm the Executive Director of Blindness: Learning in New Dimensions, BLIND, Incorporated. Love to be here. I think that White Cane Day means to me independence, but also a chance for us to get together as blind people and show the capabilities that we have. So, look forward to getting out there and walking with my friends. Beth: Beth. I come to White Cane Day because I work with two students that are legally blind and it gives me an opportunity to see other students and how capable they can be. Alycia Howard: Hi, I am Alycia Howard and to me White Cane Day means a celebration of independence and a celebration of how the long white cane has impacted not only the blind community but how sighted people perceive the blind community and just the positive light that White Cane Day sheds on that. John Davis: Hi, this is John Davis. I'm the Director at the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind and what White Cane Day means to me, it's an opportunity to share and bring forth the importance of white cane awareness and for people to understand that when they're out driving that they need to be aware of individuals that have either a white cane or a guide dog and that they follow the rules of law, which means that they provide the right away for those individuals so that they can travel safely and those in the vehicles can travel safely as well. It also means that ... For our students in our academy, that white cane means that freedom to be able to get out and just participate in life like everybody else. Isaac: My name is Isaac. I'm currently an intern student at BLIND, Inc. I'm student teaching there, hoping to obtain NOMC, which is the National Orientation and Mobility Certification. I think it's really great thing that they do here and it's good to get everyone out in the community. Holly Nordmeyer: My name is Holly Nordmeyer. I'm from the Minnesota State Academies and I'm the Orientation Mobility Instructor and I'm also a teacher for the blind and visually impaired. Well, White Cane Day, for me, it's independence. It's recognition for our students. I mean, our students are a minority in the population overall. To me, it's a time for them to get together and meet other people that are cane travelers and travel at whatever level of skill that they have and show off those skills and let all the drivers out there know that there are white canes and to let the public know what the white cane law means. It means a lot to me. Dan Wenzel: A lot of people talk about safety, but for me it also means opportunity. An opportunity to explore the world. An opportunity to get out there with our canes and our dogs and make a difference. Betsy S.: I'm Betsy Shallbetter. I'm a teacher at the Academy for the Blind. White Cane Day means a whole lot to me as it has made a difference in my community. Whenever we do the walk in Faribault, Minnesota people start to pay attention. Dan Wenzel: For me, it means participation. A chance through action to show the abilities of blind people as we go and live the lives we want. Brittany T.: My name is Brittany Thomforde. I am the Director of Special Ed at the State Academies and this is my first White Cane Day. Jeff Thompson: Your first? Brittany T.: My first. I've never participated in a White Cane Day. Jeff Thompson: Well, welcome. Brittany T.: I'm really excited to see how this event works and see all the students and adults and teachers and staff and I'm excited to cheer everybody on. I'm the first one down at the end of the steps today, so I'm excited to do that. Jeff Thompson: Oh, so they get a job for ya? Brittany T.: I have a job. I chose to volunteer today. Jeff Thompson: There you go. John Jasinski: So, on behalf of Governor Mark Dayton. I have a proclamation. Samantha: Hi, I'm Samantha and I think that the white cane is very important because to so many people it's such a symbol of independence. John Jasinski: Whereas there are estimated 63,000 Minnesotans who are blind or visually impaired, many of them who've traveled with white canes. Samantha: I know, for me, I've been blind my whole life. I've never not used a cane. I know a lot of kids sort of reject it and don't wanna be seen with it, but to me, I never felt safe traveling without one. John Jasinski: And whereas the need for the orientation and mobility services and White Cane Safety awareness will continue to grow and remain vital to the educational, vocational and recreational needs of all Minnesotans who are blind or visually impaired. Samantha: To me, it's always been a big deal. My mom is blind as well. I was using a cane from the time I could walk. I was walking around conventions and stuff when I was two with the canes. John Jasinski: And whereas the Minnesota Department of Education and Minnesota Public Schools support educational outcomes for all children. Samantha: Always been something I have had and I think it's something that it's important that people realize it's sort of a symbol of independence rather than a stigmatized symbol of needing assistance. I think there's an important distinction there. John Jasinski: Now therefore, I, John Jasinski, on behalf of Governor Mark Dayton, do hereby proclaim Thursday, October 11th, 2018 as White Cane Safety Awareness Day. Jennifer Pelletier: Our students at the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind have been working on composing a song in the last few weeks. Many of them have had the opportunity to put some thoughts together about what White Cane Day means to them. We talked about what it was like to use a white cane for the first time. We read the white cane law and had a little bit of discussion about that. Ryan Strunk: So, as you walk today, as you stride out around the Capitol, down the streets, be proud of your white cane. Tap that white cane and let everybody know that we are here, we are not going anywhere and we are proud of who we are. Thank you ladies and gentlemen. Kristen Oien: All right. Hello everyone. I'm Kristen [Oien, I would like to send out a special thank you to Holly Nordmeyer and Michelle Gip for helping arrange this awesome day. So, let's give them all a round of applause. I'd also like to thank all of our volunteers who will be along the route if you have some ...

In this episode, award winning journalist Helen Thorpe joins us to discuss her most recent book, The Newcomers: Finding Refuge, Friendship, and Hope in an American Classroom. The book follows the lives of twenty-two teenagers from around the world over the course of one school year as they land at South High School in Denver, Colorado, in a beginner-level English Language Acquisition class. Many arrive directly from refugee camps, some after having lost one or both parents; together, their class represents a microcosm of the global refugee crisis as a whole. The Newcomers tells the story of what happens during the students’ first year in America, and it follows the journeys of three families in particular—from Iraq, Burma, and the Democratic Republic of Congo—illuminating what life is like in refugee-producing parts of the world. The book was published by Scribner in 2017. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/highest-aspirations/message
Join us over red wine with Anna Min, photographer, entrepreneur, and community leader, as we discuss our childhoods, health, and unrequited love. Anna and Kate met during undergrad at Macalester and continue to share their truths with one another. Anna is originally from the Cedar Riverside neighborhood and attended South High School where she played with gender and climbed the social ladder to eventually became Prom King. Then she attended Macalester where she met Kate. Outside of her Economics major, Anna was invested in photography and community building. Now she runs Min Enterprises Photography, continues her community activism, and shares some laughs with us.
Weightlifting class might be the place where you'd least expect to find technology use, even in a MyTech school. But at South High School, students are leveraging their Chromebooks, Schoology and the power of video feedback to help themselves and their peers at George Washington High School get the most out of their workouts.
