Spirituality is one of the most difficult subjects to talk about. Institutionalized religion has historically been a force of reaction to oppress the masses. A lot of people turn towards the Left out of their legitimate negative experiences that result from religious or spiritual practice. Whether we want to admit it or not, the same can be unfortunately said about political organizing. While it is easy to romanticize the work that we do, organizing spheres are not perfect. The fact that almost every one of us can name someone who has been harmed through this work is indicative of the costly nature that comes from our work. On this episode of The Heatwave, we wanted to spark a conversation around this issue with the help of the one and only Breht O'Shea from Revolutionary Left Radio. We discussed the pernicious trends that happen within organizing that endanger the health and safety of others and what can we possibly do about it. His name was Coronel Amelio Robles. The Mexican Revolution can be characterized as one of the most contested social revolutions to happen due to the multidimensional nature of the struggle. The present-day Mexican settler colony describes it as the “dawn” of a new transformation that “successfully pushed” the nation towards “modernity”; for many guerrilleros involved, it is a reminder of the contradictory nature of navigating within Latin America. The story of Coronel Amelio Robles Ávila of the Liberation Army of the South is a perfect encapsulation of this. Being a Transgender Zapatista in the early 20th century, Robles had to live his whole life in a struggle for recognition for who he was and did whatever was necessary. While some consider the bloodshed of the revolution to end in 1920, Amelio unfortunately engaged in the struggle until his deathbed. In this episode of The Heatwave, we study his story, the disgraceful revisionism that resulted after his passing, and what present-day lessons we can apply for the true liberation of all people. As China and the rest of BRICS aspire to the possibility of creating a multipolar world, the Amerikan Empire will not remain sidelined. Capitalist Imperialism will not let its stranglehold over the globally colonized and, out of necessity, will do whatever is needed to maintain control. Out of the looming fears of the settler bourgeoisie, the Yankee empire is turning inward, undermining indigenous sovereignty for the possibility of maintaining global domination. In this episode of The Heatwave, we discuss the expansion of rare earth mining within the US and how it is intrinsically attached to the decadent lifestyle the settler class in the US experience. Needless without saying, water is life and we will cease to exist without it. Every aspect of our lives is dependent on it and unfortunately, due to the barbarism of capitalist exploitation that is built off of the settler-colonial foundation of the region, the future of water in the southwest is more uncertain than ever before. In response to the inaction of the State of Arizona, the Gila River Indian Community decided to take a stance and pull out from subsidizing the state's water supply. In this episode of The Heatwave, we discuss the historical legacies of the colonization of local indigenous nations and how this is tied to this bold stance taken by the GRIC. With two fundamentalist bills becoming the law of the land, the youth are not taking $h!t for granted. Even with the Amerikan Empire trying to grasp a sense of control over people in all aspects of life, people are still taking a stance and calling out the brutality that this wretched country propagates. The walkout from students from Hamilton High shows us the next chapter of local resistance to fascist repression. In this episode of The Heatwave, we discuss this protest, the current state of precarity, the saddening police murder of Ali Osman, and the inspiring new Cuban family code. Day in and day out, we are constantly exposed to propaganda. On social media, on television, or even on the radio, we are exposed to people that are trying to influence us. Whether that is to buy something that we don't need or to sell us the idea that we need to get to war, propaganda is an essential fabric of Amerikan society. As communists in the imperial core, we must counter this. We must counter the narrative-building machine that has existed since the inception of this settler-colonial nation that has caused much havoc abroad. This is no easy task—the state department are professional manipulators so whatever we release, it must be calculated. In this episode of The Heatwave, we reflect on the purpose of propaganda and how to approach it in a way that does not restate the same narratives that our class-enemies express. We are currently witnessing the decline of the Amerikan Empire and the oppressor class is doing whatever is necessary to maintain their power. In a country that was created from genocidal erasure and enslavement, it is no surprise the settler class is resorting to their old ways. Fascism is a necessary evil for global capitalism, so ASU using the empty platitude of “freedom of speech” and platforming a spokesperson that openly-espouses white supremacy is a canary for what is yet to come in the Southwest. In this episode of The Heatwave, we discuss the “white advocate” Jared Taylor's visit to Tempe and how it ties to the unmasking of fascism globally. For one to correctly solve the present, one must acknowledge the past. Mecha de ASU is an organization that is based in Phoenix, Arizona that is the living legacy of many political movements that have happened in the Amerikan Southwest. Created in 1969 during the prime of the Chicano movement, our organization has shifted and evolved through time, and We feel it is important that this history is not forgotten. In this episode of The Heatwave, We go over the MECHA 101 where We cover the historical legacies that created us as an organization (such as Spanish colonization, the creation of the settler-colonial Mexican nation-state, and the Chicano movement) and what We stand for now! This is tailored for people that are interested in joining our organization, so it barely scratches the surface. If you have any corrections from what was said, please let us know. It is widely known that the Amerikan southwest is having a water crisis and that time is running out, but one must ask “why? Why are we in the place we're at? Why does it matter to me?” While much of liberal media “focuses” on the “future” of the planet, anyone who has a sense of what is happening right now understands that the future is now and we're already paying the consequences of capitalist mismanagement. In this episode of The Heatwave, we address those concerns by focusing on the water crisis at Lake Mead and Monterrey, the drying up of the Rio Grande in Albuquerque, and the grassroots indigenous push for the revocation of the doctrine of discovery in Canada. The resulting mass death from the pandemic in this empire has exposed an unprecedented contradiction where the shrinking of the reserved army of labor has paved the way for an uncertain future for capitalists. Time and time again, the most oppressed and marginalized suffer from the feckless actions of the privileged and powerful. Whether it's from excessive heat and water scarcity here in the valley or gun violence throughout this supposed country, the most oppressed bear the brunt of capitalist barbarity. In this episode of The Heatwave, we discussed the social effects of noise and environmental pollution in South Phoenix, the aggravating water shortage caused by the Colorado River, the call to action caused by the Robb Elementary School shooting, and the artificial character of heterosexuality. The physical and mental deterioration of former Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel, the $990 million I-10 highway construction project between Phoenix and Tucson, and the monumental overturning of Roe v. Wade uphold this system's disregard for the health of the individual, collective, and environmental level. There is an apparent disconnect between this country's governing body and the minds of the people. In this episode of The Heatwave, we discuss the importance of physical fitness for revolutionaries, the economic implications of the Supreme Court's attack on reproductive rights, induced demand from roadway expansion, and the deaths of Isaac Newton, Alan Turing, and Nikola Tesla (may their souls rest in peace). What is Chicanismo? Is it an ideology? Is it a lived experience? Or is it a simple political categorization? While incorrect, Gloria Anzaldúa's text Borderlands has provided a substantive answer to this question and still has a heavy influence on this day. As an organization that believes in land back and true decolonization, we have felt the need in critiquing Anzaldúa's text which is characterized by the racist understandings of indigeneity in Jose Vasconcelos's text, La raza cósmica. In a special collaboration with the Decolonized Buffalo podcast, we critique Anzaldúa's text and how it still plays a big role in the community. For one to strive for collective liberation, one must deconstruct all colonial machinations and the so-called identity of "Chicanismo” must be critically analyzed. How different are the liberals and conservatives of this country? Though liberals may frame themselves as polar opposites to their "bigoted" right-wing counterparts, they ultimately find themselves defending the violence enacted by the Amerikan Empire. Uncritical analysis and blind belief in this country's systems and institutions have literally killed a revolutionary movement calling to end state-sanctioned violence against Black people in less than two years. Cries to abolish the police and invest in community resources have somehow morphed into support and applause for increased police funding. White liberal social media infographic-type activists are now defending and even directing people to send funds to the Azov Battalion, an ultra-right-wing white nationalist Neo-Nazi paramilitary integrated into Ukraine's military. War, imperialism, and white supremacy are the things that this so-called democracy has bipartisanship behind. When the US sounds the drums of war, both liberals and conservatives are in lockstep marching to the same beat. For one to fully understand history, one must understand who created it. African American Experience in Tempe by Jared Smith is a city-backed booklet that attempts to document the lived context of the first Black residents in the community. Black residents in Tempe—as with the rest of the country—were repeatedly denied a quality life and were unfortunately erased from most of the city's written history. This booklet tried to highlight the progress made towards a “more inclusive” Tempe, while trying to acknowledge its legacy of racial segregation, housing covenants, and terrorization by the KKK. While this text concluded by stating that much progress has been made, we all know too well there are still remnants of its abhorrent past. The so-called US is fundamentally a project of exclusion. In the so-called "Land of the Free'', Amerikan society has necessitated the dispossession and displacement of peoples from within and abroad. Built on Indigenous genocide, African enslavement, and immigrant labor, the blood of the colonized has been the backbone of society and it continues to be that way. Even through attempts of so-called reforms and labor movements, the settleristic nature of the Amerikan empire incentivizes so-called working-class whites to uphold the project. This presents the question: are Euro-Amerikans truly part of the working-class? What will it take to have a successful revolution within Babylon itself? Can revolution even happen in the first place? In this *special* episode of The Heatwave, we decided to record our latest Mecha Book Club discussion where we answered these exact questions by discussing the renowned communist text, Settlers: The Myth of the White Proletariat by J. Sakai. This is part two of our discussion so we only discussed the last seven chapters. It was a very fruitful discussion and we hope y'all enjoy it! COVID cases are higher than ever before and yet Ducey has made absolutely no effort to control the rate of infection and keep people safe. Rather, he's decided to use federal relief money to support schools that have no COVID-19 related mandates, a decision which the US Treasury Department has threatened to sue him for. Despite incentivizing the endangerment of students and staff, Ducey has insisted that schools in Arizona remain open for in-person learning. Reckless decisions like these trivialize death and dull us to the suffering of the immunocompromised and chronically ill. The money machine stops at nothing, not even at the cost of human life. Culture, by intent, is not political but due to its existence in a society that has a political material base, art can demonstrate the dynamism that politics can have in every aspect of society. The children's movie, Nacho Libre—loved by some and unknown by many—is a film that beautifully portrays the realities many people around the world live under. In this episode of The Heatwave, we analyze these machinations to further understand the society we live in. Four hundred years ago, the First Thanksgiving was held. According to legend, the Pilgrims of Plymouth and the Wampanoag shared a feast to celebrate their harvest and give thanks to God for the blessings of the past year. This picturesque scene conveniently scrubs away the destruction and displacement of indigenous peoples at the hands of European settlers bent on colonial expansion. Discontent with their condition, those colonizers would slaughter and steal until they expanded their empire across the entire North American continent. A yearly day of thanksgiving cannot mask 400 years of colonial greed. In this episode, we discuss the myth of Thanksgiving, the Pequot Massacre, the irony around Black Friday, and more. Land back!
