Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 10, 2023 is: encomium en-KOH-mee-um noun Encomium refers to an expression of glowing and warmly enthusiastic praise. // Upon achieving EGOT status, the actor was deservedly showered with encomiums from across the entertainment world. See the entry > Examples: “Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright) is desperately trying to save the life of her brother, King T'Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman) … until her mother, Ramonda (Angela Bassett), arrives to deliver the dreaded news: ‘Your brother is with the ancestors.' Thus does ‘Wakanda Forever' address, head on, the tragic loss of Boseman, who died of colon cancer in 2020. In a fitting tribute, the shuffle of iconic characters that opens every Marvel movie here is composed entirely of images of Boseman, a moving encomium to a gifted and charismatic actor who left the stage much too soon.” — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post, 8 Nov. 2022 Did you know? Kudos to encomium for being a marvelous, magnificent, must-have word for high praise for over four centuries—at least in formal speech and writing. Indeed, like its synonym panegyric, encomium (from the Greek word enkōmion, meaning “celebration”) has seen a steady drop in usage since the early 1800s and is rarely encountered outside of literary or highfalutin contexts. It does pop up in pop culture now and again, however. Music fans of a certain generation may remember a host of their favorite artists, from Tori Amos to Stone Temple Pilots, paying tribute to Led Zeppelin in 1995 on the appropriately titled album Encomium: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin. And more recently, the famously loquacious television series Gilmore Girls dropped encomium no less than five times in a 2016 episode featuring “Stars Hollow: The Musical,” a show-within-a-show featuring the line “Not so fast with the encomiums!” Of course, you may dish out your own encomiums in any manner or velocity you wish—and verily we shall tip our chapeaux.
Editor - Jennifer Lame ACE, Additional Editor - Mike Fay, 1st Assistant Editor - Nick Ellsberg and 1st Assistant Film Editor - Tom Foligno The OPPENHEIMER editing team of Jennifer Lame ACE, Mike Fay, Nick Ellsberg and Tom Foligno applied their collective storytelling talents to film technology both old and new. While Jennifer and Mike worked to shape and refine Christopher Nolan's story into an instant classic, Nick and Tom were tasked with mastering a hybrid film and digital workflow to make the most of Nolan's brilliant 70MM IMAX footage. Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film chronicles the life of American theoretical physicist and polymath J. Robert Oppenheimer. The story predominantly focuses on Oppenheimer's early studies, his direction of the Manhattan Project during World War II, and his eventual fall from grace due to his 1954 security hearing; juxtaposed with this are events surrounding Oppenheimer's relationship with Lewis Strauss, a senior member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission who sees Oppenheimer as a rival. It stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer and Robert Downey Jr. as Strauss, with the remaining ensemble supporting cast including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh. JENNIFER LAME, ACE While Jen claims that her "wheelhouse" in editorial is films that feature people talking in rooms, as her work on MANCHESTER BY THE SEA (2016) and MARRIAGE STORY (2019) both prove, you wouldn't know it by her standout work in bigger features like Christopher Nolan's TENET (2020) and BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER (2022). MIKE FAY As Jen Lame was wrapping up things on WAKANDA FOREVER, she entrusted the early assembly duties on OPPENHEIMER to Mike Fay. Prior to OPPENHEIMER, Mike had been sharpening his skills as an assistant editor on LIFE OF PI (2012) and GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021) and as a VFX Editor on JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM (2019) and BULLET TRAIN (2022). NICK ELLSBERG Nick and Mike Fay had more than a passing familiarity prior to OPPENHEIMER. Like Mike, Nick worked on BULLET TRAIN (2022), GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021), and JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM as an assistant editor. TOM FOLIGNO A veteran of the Marty Scorsese film school, having worked as an assistant on CASINO (1995), BRINGING OUT THE DEAD (1999), GANGS OF NEW YORK (2002) and THE AVIATOR (2004), Tom was able to return to his film editing roots and dust off his splicer for his role in the film cutting room on OPPENHEIMER. Editing OPPENHEIMER In our talk with the OPPENHEIMER editing team, we discuss... The beauty of awkward people talking in rooms Keeping up the pace on a three-hour biopic Whistling past the biggest scene in the movie because you already know it will be great Bringing film workflows back to life, bigger than ever Loving Chris Nolan's "all business' approach in the cutting room The Credits Visit Extreme Music for all your production audio needs Check out the latest with Avid Media Composer Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

“Barbie” opened to a box office record over the weekend, spawning a full on social media and marketing blitz worthy of a summer blockbuster. But this isn't your mother's version of the pink-clad plastic princess. This Barbie is right in line with the Hollywood fantasy land where women rule and men are an optional accessory, sold separately. Jason says the film has one central theme, not that different from “Wonder Women” and “Wakanda Forever”, men are the bane of female existence and the cause of all societal woes. “Hollywood is hammering a consistent theme: men – regardless of color – owe women a debt. That's the point of “Barbie.” Shemeka Michelle joins “Fearless” to share a female perspective of the film and Delano Squires stops by to add his thoughts as well. Plus, Steve Kim joins Jason to discuss LeBron James' son, Bronny. The 18 year-old basketball star suffered cardiac arrest during a workout at USC on Monday. As soon as the news broke speculative surrounding the event and a possible connection to the COVID-19 vaccines began, but Jason says he's reluctant to go that route just yet. Are your relationships serving you or are they causing more harm than good? Learn about the significance of choosing the right connections in our lives, especially in times of pain or heart deficit, as we use the highly anticipated sequel, Wakanda Forever, as a foundation for our discussion. We delve into the profound pain Princess Shuri experiences due to the loss of her brother, the former Black Panther, as she navigates an excruciating pain, reminding us of the power of selecting the right relationships. In the world of relationships, there are three C's - Constituents, Comrades, and Confidants. Each play a crucial role in shaping our lives. Using the biblical story of King David and his son Absalom, we highlight the importance of discerning who to invest in and who to allow in our lives. We also provide a rundown on how to identify the types of people that are currently in your life and those you need to add. Moreover, we underscore the significance of speaking the truth in love, the courage of redefining relationships, and the necessity of having meaningful conversations to fortify bonds.Brace yourself for a tale of an awkward marriage proposal, which emphasizes that sometimes the relationships we need can be found on the other side of an uncomfortable conversation. But remember, forging sturdy relationships is not exclusive to our human connections. If you feel distant from Christ, we beckon you to experience the journey of renewal by opening your hearts to the Lord's work, and assure you that starting a relationship with the Lord is as easy as ABC. So come, join us on this journey of reshaping relationships and reconnecting with Christ.Support the show

This week, we're discussing the movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The movie picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The movie explores themes of grief, loss, and legacy. It also introduces new characters and villains to the MCU. Overall, we enjoyed the movie. We thought it was a worthy sequel to the first Black Panther. Here are some of our thoughts: We loved seeing Shuri as Black Panther. She was a great addition to the role. We thought the movie did a good job of dealing with T'Challa's death. It was emotional, but it was also respectful. We thought the new characters were interesting. We're excited to see more of them in the future. We thought the villains were a bit underwhelming. They weren't as threatening as Killmonger from the first movie. Overall, we thought Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a good movie. It's not as good as the first one, but it's still worth watching. We hope you enjoyed our podcast. Thanks for listening! Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was released on November 11, 2022. Hosts: Daniel Levain, Ian Sweetman and Eric Sweetman. Peter J. Devlin, recently elected as a Governor of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, has worked on more than 70 films and been nominated for five Oscars including Black Panther, Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon, Transformers, Star Trek (2009) and Pearl Harbor. He received a BAFTA nomination for his work on Star Trek and a Primetime Emmy nomination for Star Trek: Picard. He has worked closely with some of the top directors in film, including Michael Bay, Ryan Coogler, Ron Howard and Patty Jenkins. Earlier in the year he wrapped his work on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and is thrilled to have just worked with Chris Pine, who is making his directorial debut with the upcoming film Poolman. A past CAS Board member, it was his first CAS nomination for Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday that introduced him to the organization in 2000. Since then, he has received multiple nominations. Born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Devlin knew that he wanted to work in film after seeing Jaws as a teenager. Though his school principal told him his dreams were “pie in the sky,” he applied for a trainee audio assistant position at the BBC in Belfast in 1981. Initially thinking he might move into the camera department, he quickly realized his true interest was in production sound. To prepare for the interview, he spent his days in the local library reading as much about microphone principles, recording techniques and filmmaking as he could find. He got the job, which proved the perfect training ground, with the BBC's wide range of productions, from news, to sports, to concerts and to radio drama. “I had great mentors, and I learned about all of the different disciplines of sound there.” Devlin's focus and persistence were evident as he took the next step, writing to directors he admired, including Michael Mann. He still has the letter Mann sent him in 1987, inviting him to visit the set of Miami Vice. From there, Devlin forged connections with others in the industry, landing his first job in the United States, working in commercials. Eventually, he moved into television and film. Today, Devlin continues to adapt to the ever-changing technologies that enhance storytelling through production sound mixing. While he wishes that he had today's tech for some of the films he worked on in the past, he says, “The most important element will always be the work of the sound department as a team, boom operators and sound utilities. Their expertise allows me to concentrate on recording performance and create tracks that can elevate a scene when they are handed off to our colleagues in post production.” Devlin joins an illustrious group of past CAS Career Achievement Honorees including: Anna Behlmer, Willie Burton, Tom Fleischman, Les Fresholtz, Ed Greene, Tomlinson Holman, Doc Kane, William B. Kaplan, David MacMillan, Paul Massey, Scott Millan, Mike Minkler, Walter Murch, Andy Nelson, Chris Newman, Lee Orloff, Richard Portman, John Pritchett, Don Rogers, Gary Rydstrom, Dennis Sands, Randy Thom, Jim Webb, Jeffrey S. Wexler and Charles Wilborn.
