Harvard Professor John Stauffer joins us to discuss the history of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and its significance and meanings for American culture. He shows that it's a song that unites and divides the country, and that it has been used by many different groups in American social and political life. It's a fascinating interview that takes the song all the way from its origins as “Say, Brothers…” to the union song, “Solidarity Forever,” and its use by the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. A wonderful show! Episode 572.

On this week's Labor History in Two: the year was 1925. Five hundred African American sleeping car porters gathered at the Elks Hall at 129th Street in Harlem. Taylor and Leah Hunt-Hendrix join Ryan Grim to discuss their new book, “Solidarity: The Past, Present, And Future of a World-Changing Idea.” Delving into the philosophical depths of solidarity, they trace its origins back to ancient Rome and explore its relevance in today's interconnected world.Focusing on transformative solidarity, they highlight its potential to bridge diverse experiences and causes, offering a unified approach to address the multifaceted crises we face. Taylor, a co-founder of the Debt Collective, a union of debtors, and Hunt-Hendrix, co-founder of progressive philanthropy networks Solidaire and Way to Win, draw on their experience to underscore the necessity of transformative solidarity in movement building. If you'd like to support our work, go to theintercept.com/give, where your donation, no matter what the amount, makes a real difference. And if you haven't already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. In this episode, Derek and Nathan are beyond thrilled to be joined by Kain Colter, former quarterback at Northwestern University, organizer and co-founder of the College Athletes Players Association, and organizer and face of the union drive of the Northwestern football team. Kain provides a vital oral history of how the union drive at Northwestern went down, from his time reading Marx at Goldman Sachs to the NLRB. This history is required listening for all those involved in and following the current college football labor movement. Then, in the latter part of the conversation, the three delve into the current labor dynamics in college football, including a discussion of tactics and the shared admiration for and solidarity with current players trying to overturn a fundamentally exploitative system.
