What's the famous quote about dessert? Oh right, it's 'save the best for last' and we did just that! As we close our first season, the Young American Dream, we have a very special guest, Mary Cain also known as the Nana and grandmother of your host, J. Camille. In this episode, Mary talks about her personal shifts in her 91 years of life including enduring several moments of racial injustice such as the death of Martin Luther King Jr., her journey of joining the military, and her life as a widow of a veteran and a mother. Mary Hinton-Cain was born in 1929 and grew up in Richton, Mississippi where she was the only girl out of four children from Louis and Gracie Hinton. In high school, she was sent away by her away mother to live with her uncle to receive a better education and better quality of life. As a result, in 1947, Mary graduated high school in Mobile, AL. Shortly after, she joined the U.S. army and during her time in the military she met her husband, Lynwood Cain Jr. The couple had 5 children, 4 girls and 1 boy. In 1969, Lynwood passed away while serving during the Vietnam War. Holding true to her husband's dying request of not 'turning back' to raise their children in the South, Mary settled at their last stop in Lawton, OK and finished raising her children there. Today, at 91 years old, she is a proud mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother whom everyone gives the title, "Nana." Hear her share her lifetime of shifts today!
