How about another in-depth, deep-diving, evergreen conversation about creative writing, finding success as we each define it, and staying healthy and sane in the process? In Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick 093, I speak with transcendental horror author and speculative poet Darius Jones. Our conversation covers the deeper, emotionally resonant value of horror and "weird" fiction, how Darius fills the "fiction-shaped void" in his soul, why the pandemic and a pair of astronomy binoculars led to publishing fantastical epic poetry, the value of rejection, the importance of meditation and stoicism, and...yep, a whole heck of a lot more. The conversation with Darius Jones was recorded on May 24th, 2023. The rest of this episode was recorded on August 23, 2023. About Darius Jones Darius Jones writes cosmic horror, weird fiction, dark fantasy -- or, taken together and as he likes to call it, transcendental horror, as well as speculative poetry and sometimes historical fiction. His stories and poems have appeared in Strange Horizons, The No Sleep Podcast, Starline Magazine, and elsewhere. He is a member of the Horror Writers Association, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association. In Episode 1, guests Shelley Levisay and Amy Kingry talk about State of Oklahoma v. Julius Darius Jones. On the evening of July 28, 1999, Jones, armed with a .25 caliber pistol, carjacked and shot Paul Howell in the driveway of his parents' Edmond, Oklahoma home. His sister and daughters were lucky to escape the carjacking unharmed. In spite of the overwhelming evidence presented at trial establishing Jones' guilt and post-conviction DNA testing that identified Julius Jones as the person wearing the red bandana described by several witnesses, the Viola Davis-produced The Last Defense in 2018 fueled a media campaign of misinformation that characterized Jones' guilt as in doubt. In spite of Jones' extensive prison disciplinary record, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board broke its own rules, holding two hearings and recommending commutation and clemency for Jones. On November 18, 2021, Governor Kevin Stitt commuted Jones' sentence to life without the possibility of parole. Shelley Levisay is a criminal defense attorney and owner of Levisay & Associates, an author and podcaster from Shawnee, Oklahoma. She went to the University of Oklahoma College of Law, was Order of Barristers and a Note Editor for the American Indian Law Review. In May, 2022, she will graduate with an LL.M. in Indigenous Peoples. Amy Kingry has been a paralegal in Oklahoma City for 21 years. She was born and raised in Edmond, Oklahoma and began helping victims of violent crime as a result of the misinformation of The Last Defense and the resulting media campaign. Amy co-founded Oklahoma Victims Innocence Project. OKVIP is a community organization dedicated to supporting victims/survivors of violent crime as they navigate the post-conviction process. Amy's hope is to let victims of violent crimes know that they still have a voice to speak the truth, no matter how much their voices shake. She's also a cross-fit enthusiast and, with her significant other, fan of the Oklahoma Sooners and OKC Thunder. Amy is also the proud mom of 5 children and bonus mom to 3 step-children, so there's never a dull moment in her life.
It's been 5 years since Darius Jones last released a record under his own name, and Raw Demoon Alchemy (A Lone Operation), a solo saxophone record, breaks new ground for the genre and for Darius as a recording artist. Sonosphere had the pleasure to sit down with Darius and discuss his approach to Raw Demoon Alchemy, his childhood in Virginia, improvisation and black futurism.

He's performed, toured, and recorded professionally with bands led by artists such as Vijay Iyer, Marc Ribot, Ches Smith, Imani Uzuri, Ingrid Laubrock, Tyshawn Sorey, Anna Webber, Amirtha Kidambi, Amir ElSaffar, Allison Miller, and Darius Jones. In 2019 he was awarded the Van Lier Fellowship by Roulette Intermedium, which supported the world premieres of The Floor is Lava! (upright bass quintet), and La Operación (double saxophone trio + soprano voice), referred to as “a work so dramatic and large that is both a response to socio-historical truth as well as a reflection on his own identity…” (I Care If You Listen). In 2019 he released his debut album, Atlantic Extraction, which “features the unusual instrumentation of double bass, drums, electric guitar, flute, [and violin]- and his compositions put that configuration to imaginative use.” (The Wire Magazine). Support Burning Ambulance on Patreon Get the Burning Ambulance email newsletter The 52nd episode of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, and is sponsored by Harry's men's grooming products. If you’re listening to this, you can get a Harry’s trial set at harrys.com/burning. You’ll get a weighted ergonomic handle for a firm grip; a five blade razor with a lubricating strip and trimmer blade; rich lathering shave gel with aloe to keep your skin hydrated; and a travel blade cover to keep your razor dry and easy to grab on the go. Go to harrys.com/burning to start shaving better today! James Brandon Lewis is from Buffalo, New York, a city which has produced a surprising number of musicians whose work I listen to a lot, including Grover Washington, Jr., Charles Gayle, Rick James, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Morton Feldman, and Cannibal Corpse. I’ve seen Lewis perform live twice, both times with the avant-garde rock trio Harriet Tubman. One time was a straight double bill – James’s trio with bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Warren Trae Crudup, plus guitarist Anthony Pirog, opened for Tubman. Then, at Winter Jazzfest in 2018, Tubman put together an expanded group to perform a re-interpretation of Ornette Coleman’s Free Jazz. That night, the lineup was Tubman – Brandon Ross on guitar, Melvin Gibbs on bass, JT Lewis on drums – plus James’s trio, plus Jaimie Branch on trumpet and Darius Jones on alto sax. It was really fantastic, one of those things that you only get to see once in your life. You’re either in the room when the magic happens, or you get to hear people tell stories about it for years afterward. James made two records for the OKeh label – Divine Travels, which had William Parker on bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums, plus poet Thomas Sayers Ellis, who runs Heroes Are Gang Leaders with him, and then Days of FreeMan, which had Jamaaladeen Tacuma on bass and Rudy Royston on drums. By the way, if you’re new to this podcast, a lot of the people I’ve mentioned so far – Melvin Gibbs, William Parker, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma – have all been on in the past. Anyway, James followed Days of FreeMan with No Filter, which featured his live trio plus Pirog, and then he made Radiant Imprints, a duo album with drummer Chad Taylor, and An UnRuly Manifesto, with the trio plus Pirog and Jaimie Branch. And every one of those records is absolutely worth your time, so check ’em out. This conversation with James Brandon Lewis is the longest thing I’ve ever recorded for this podcast, and it went in a whole bunch of directions I wasn’t expecting. I wrote down about two pages of questions, and I think I asked three of them. You’ll hear what I mean – he has a lot to say on a variety of issues. This might be the most in-depth interview he’s ever done, and I hope you'll find it as fascinating as I did. If you do enjoy this podcast, please consider visiting patreon.com/burningambulance and becoming a subscriber. For just $5 a month, you can help keep this show and Burning Ambulance as a whole active and thriving. Thanks! Music heard in this episode: Heroes Are Gang Leaders, "Hurt Cult" (Artificial Happiness Button) James Brandon Lewis & Chad Taylor, "Under/Over the Rainbow" (Live in Willisau)

Philanthropy Podcast: A Resource for Nonprofit Leaders and Fundraising & Advancement Professionals
The Philanthropy Podcast Website Email Sean at The Philanthropy Podcast This week on The Philanthropy Podcast, Darius Jones, Vice President and General Manager of Garfield Produce discusses how a social venture can sometimes be the preferred model for having a lasting impact on a community, how social enterprises differ from nonprofits, how to think about scalability and replicability when you're launching your organization or expanding, and how to prepare for a large grant of social impact loan. Darius' story is inspiring and uplifting and his insights are important for anyone launching a new nonprofit or social enterprise, existing organizations thinking about how to scale operations, and anyone considering how new organizational structures might improve your ability to serve others. Most weeks I try to ask one call to action from you in response to what you learn in our episode. This week though, no call to action from me. You may have noticed that the last few weeks my episodes haven't been coming out weekly. At first I thought I'd just catch up, but now I think I need to pull back to one episode every two weeks. I love doing the podcast and hosting these conversations for you, but the scheduling, social media, and editing really do add up. So I hope you'll understand and keep tuning it to The Philanthropy Podcast even if it's just one episode every two weeks. Also, if you're the type who'd be interested in helping me with our social media, with audio editing, or if you'd like to conduct some interviews and episodes yourself and be a cohost, let me know by emailing thephilanthropypodcast@gmail.com! You can be anywhere in the world and help with these things, but if you're in or around Chicago, we can talk in person about sharing the equipment to get up and running. Anyway, the long and the short of it is there's no call to action. It's a busy time of year for all of us, so just relax, enjoy the episode, and know I'm grateful for your loyal support. Recorded live on Sept. 2, 2015. Raised as the youngest of four children in a big musical family in Swainsboro, Georgia, Bragg lived in a number of Southern musical capitals – Athens, Atlanta, and Nashville – before settling in New York in 2004. Her music is consequently a seamless hybrid of her southern Americana roots and the downtown New York singer-songwriter community of which she became a key member before moving to Nashville in December 2013.Tattoos and Bruises follows her sophomore release, Sugar (2007), which was produced by Darius Jones, and recorded in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Her debut album, Certain Simple Things (2004), was co-written, engineered and produced in Athens, Georgia, by Dave Haywood (Lady Antebellum). Winner of the BandPage/ZooLabs Music Residency Contest (2014), Telluride Troubadour Competition Honorable Mention (2012), International Songwriting Competition Honorable Mention (2011), Mary’s music has been compared to Patty Griffin and Mindy Smith.
