The world of specialty coffee today owes a lot of its success to those who helped build movements and create opportunities in earlier years. The times where new and actually meaningful advances in coffee shops, coffee craft, and service. There were many people and businesses that were at the forefront of the 3rd wave coffee movement and we get to talk with one of those people today! On this Founder Friday we get to sit down with my friend and coffee legend, Sammy Piccolo, of Caffe Artigiano, and now owner of Prado Cafe in Vancouver Washington. Sammy Piccolo has spend nearly 3 decades in the coffee world. A 4x Canadian Barista Champion, The firs World Latte Art Champion, and 3x top 3 finisher at World Barista Championships including coming in 2nd in After Sammy's brothers Vince and Mike founded Caffe Artigiano in 1999, Sammy immediately jumped on board. Artigiano championed progressive espresso culture, popularized latte art in Canada, and innovated service styles in their massively busy shops. Many future owners and champions came from that cafe. Sammy took over Prado Cafe in 2012 and has grown it to a fleet of almost 10 shops with a decidedly more simple and minimal approach with a heavy emphasis on hospitality and in house baking. Today we get to look back to the early days and talk with Sammy about his journey, the lessons he learned, his opinions and insights into the industry and competitions, and the things he believes are at the root of success for cafe operations. What do you do when the world refuses to become what you know it should be? In this conversation, Steven Garber introduces the concept of "the proximate" - learning to make peace with what is nearly, but not yet, true - in our marriages, our work for justice, and our longing for God's kingdom to come. Drawing on Tolkien, Augustine, the Clapham Society, and the surprising cry of a postmodern novelist, Steven helps us understand the difference between hope and optimism, what it means to carry our wounds into the world as healers, and why the question of what it means to be human may be the most urgent question of our age. His new book is Hints of Hope.Steven Garber has been teacher of many people in many places for many years, a professor for undergraduates, graduates, and people at work in the world. The founder of the Washington Institute for Faith, Vocation and Culture, he now serves as the Senior Fellow for Vocation and the Common Good for the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, Senior Advisor for the Economics of Mutuality and Senior Fellow for the Institute for Marketplace Transformation; and for several years was the Professor of Marketplace Theology at Regent College, Vancouver BC. The author of several books, his most recent are Hints of Hope: Essays on Making Peace with the Proximate, Visions of Vocation: Common Grace for the Common Good, and The Seamless Life: A Tapestry of Love and Learning, Worship and Work. With his wife Meg, they are the parents of children and grandchildren, and have long lived in Virginia among family, friends and flowers. Society doesn't always speak kindly about people's weight and appearance, and Cheyenne is doing something about it.In this episode were talking about “Fat Joke”, not only the play but the movement around getting society to change how they're thinking, viewing, and treating people of different body sizes. Listen as our host, Diane Rolston, sits down with Cheyenne Rouleau, creator and solo performer of Fat Joke. She interviews this talented artist, director, comedian, and producer about her powerful one-woman show that's provoking audiences and creating real change.Listen to learn these key takeaways:How Fat Joke came about: from experiencing fat-phobic comments at work to a 10-minute TED talk to a touring show (and why speaking up was the catalyst)The moment that changed everything: when a director called and said, "I think there's a show here" after seeing a dry PowerPoint presentationWhy the title changed from "Big Boned" to "Fat Joke" and how balancing heavy facts with comedy helps people's guards come downWhat body neutrality means and why it's different from body positivityThe powerful poster story: holding space between sexy and powerful without being hyper-sexualizedThe surprising audience response: from expecting hate mail to offering talk-backs How being 36 and having processed trauma allows Cheyenne to hold space for others who haven't - and why she couldn't have done this in her 20sWhat's next: international tour opportunities, adapting for high schools, and going back to school to become a high school teacherCheyenne's final message about what's important in a world that feels scary and heavy right nowFor touring dates and to get tickets go to: https://neworldtheatre.com/projects/fat-joke/Cheyenne's Social Media links: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chey.nan.igans/Cheyenne's Bio: Cheyenne Rouleau (she/they) is a multi-award-winning writer, performer, and director from Vancouver BC. Today on the bench, we sit withValtteri Rantala, A Finn living in Vancouver BC since 2016. Val started a Sauna company in Vancouver in 2019. And in the shadows of Western Red Cedars, we'll hear the origin stories of the budding West Coast Sauna Summit at Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat center, one of the pins on Val's Vancouver Sauna Circuit. We just returned from the second West Coast Sauna Summit here in 2026. And I was able to attend last year's inaugural Summit in 2025. The Vibes at the West Coast Sauna Summit are quite familiar to me, as founder and lead contributor for Sauna Days, Larsmont Cottages, Two Harbors Minnesota. The similar vibe is: a collection of mobile saunas, a kick ass facility, access to clean cold water, and mix in a hundreds or so like minded thermal enthusiasts and some Sauna Talk presentations, stir the soup, and what we are met with are wonderful, collaborative, spontaneous connections. Endorphins rushing between rounds, legal libations sprinkled in like fresh basil. Anyhow, back to the Vancouver Sauna Circuit. In addition to the Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Center, Val dots the SaunaTimes sauna map with a few other bathhouses. And in this episode we get to hear a little bit more about these facilities. Let's keep in mind that as you click around the SaunaTimes map, and the Vancouver Circuit specifically, clicking the Vancouver Circuit button again will bring us out to all the bathhouses on the map. A circuit is not meant to be all inclusive. A circuit is a Scouts window into their city, collection, community. And let's not forget the adjacencies, where "people like us do things like this." and in Val's case are a couple hikes and restaurants within the Vancouver area.

Transcription -> Hey listeners, what's up, it's Eli, station arcadia podcast producer and Your gay best friend. I've got a couple events I want to tell you about: The first one is an arcpod thing. This coming Friday, September 26th, will be the premier an hour long episode called "What We Had Planned" in which I read through our notes and editorialize about what would have been next in the story of Station Arcadia. If that seems in any way intriguing, I'd like to invite you join the youtube chat of the premier where me and J.R Steele are going to be hanging out and shooting the shit. You can ask any questions you have, you can react live, you can lurk and watch the bants, whatever floats your moving island. This is Friday September 26th, 2025, at 6pm pacific time, 9pm eastern, Europeans I Am sorry. Our youtube channel is Metal Steve Productions. The second event is not an arcpod thing, it's just an Eli moment. I'm going to be the featured performer at a poetry open mic night in Vancouver, British Columbia, on October 13th. If you happen to be in the area, you are so very invited, entry by donation. I'm going to be doing a 30 minute set of original poems and a bit of music. I'm super excited. I've never done anything quite like this but I love to perform, I love to do spoken word with rhythm and a bit of a theatrical flair, I try to make it very entertaining, I think this is something where even if you don't see yourself as a poetry person, you can come and you're gonna have a good time. And maybe walk away a little confused about whether or not you're a poetry person. So if you've enjoyed top hits of my arcpod career, like the Eternal Party episode, The Fire Song and the ominous season 2 prophecy, come support me live! I don't know if any of you actually live nearby but if any Station Arcadia listeners make it out, it would make my whole year, and we can totally talk podcast stuff afterwards. This event is at 7pm, October 13th, and the venue is DCTRL at 436 W Pender st, Vancouver BC. For updates, you can follow my instagram eli_and_ego or the open mic series, which is open.mic.night.1 Okay, I think that's everything! Stay safe out there, and, I'll see you round! Bye.

The latest four letter word of Four Letter Word season is dino. 'Dinosaur' is derived from Greek 'terrible lizard', and they could have called it 'whopping great lizard' or 'sublime lizard' or 'hey cool lizard', but no. TERRIBLE. Professor Hannah McGregor of Material Girls podcast and author of the book Clever Girl: Jurassic Park explains humans' relationship with language for dinosaurs, and why 'terrible' might be a perfect choice.Visit theallusionist.org/dino for more information about dinos, links to Hannah and her work, pics of the Crystal Palace Park dinosaurs, and the transcript of the episode.TOMORROW, ie 22 July, at 4pm UK time, BBC Radio 4 is broadcasting (and internetting) our piece Souvenirs, a sort of tragicomic essay/documentary/musical? about the two friends who around 1900 founded the groundbreaking Doves Press then almost immediately had a big falling out and spent more than a decade fighting over their in-house typeface. And THEN things got weird. If you like stories about history and/or petty revenge, this is for you. It's some of my best work - I give it 7.8 out of 10 - and I'd love for you to listen to it, via radio or BBC website or BBC Sounds (it'll be on there for a while after, I'm not sure how long). We're also having a live listening party during the broadcast in the Allusioverse Discord, so what a great time to join: theallusionist.org/donate You also get behind the scenes scoops about the making of every episode, livestreams with me and my collection of dictionaries, perks at live shows, the company of your fellows in the Allusioverse Discord, and watchalongs eg currently the new season of Great British Sewing Bee. The first thing that comes to mind is my young activist in me that says, of course, let's just fight. Let's just do what we can to speak out against, be revolutionary, be, you know, like we were when we were young in the 60s, 70s. Now I think that my response is to stop and to slow down and to do some deep listening and some meditation and to ground myself because I don't know what to do at this point in time, at all.My second conscient conversation with composer and acoustic ecologist Hildegard Westerkamp. The first took place on March 31, 2021 in Vancouver, e22 westerkamp – slowing down through listening, and this second took place on March 17, 2025 in Vancouver BC which is on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.. Hildi is also featured in numerous other episodes of this podcast including 157, 170 and 226. I asked Hildi to focus our conversation on her childhood in post war Germany and how her upbringing has affected her work as an artist and listener. This is especially relevant as authoritarian regimes are unfolding around the world. I think we are well served by listening to our elders who have important stories to tell. Show notes generated by Whisper Transcribe AIActionsAcknowledge the importance of slowing down and listening deeply in times of crisisRecognize the lasting impact of childhood experiences, particularly in environments of trauma and upheavalSeek calm and open spaces to foster creativity and profound changeEmbrace the creative spirit and artistic behavior as essential for survival and resilienceConnect with others and use intelligence and senses to navigate challenging momentsStory PreviewHildegard Westerkamp reflects on a childhood shaped by the ruins and lingering fears of post-war Germany, revealing how early exposure to trauma and a deep connection to nature forged her path as an artist and listener. Her story highlights the importance of acknowledging the past, finding solace in nature, and cultivating inner calm to foster creativity and resilience in the face of ongoing global challenges. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHey conscient listeners, I've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). The other day was the 53rd anniversary of the break-in at the Watergate Hotel, which not only caused a lot of political uproar, it had a big linguistic legacy: the suffix -gate to mean a scandal. Today, as part of Four Letter Word season, we have a list of -gates - royal, sporting, political, food, showbiz - it's a non-exhaustive list because there are so many, and new ones are being spawned all the time. Content warning for all sorts of bad human behaviour. At theallusionist.org/gate you'll find a transcript of this episode, plus links to more information about many of the -gates, and to the rest of Four Letter Word season. Also check theallusionist.org/events for upcoming live shows, including a special collab with Material Girls podcast, and an event with Samin Nosrat for her new book Good Things.Support the show at theallusionist.org/donate and as well as keeping this independent podcast going, you also get behind-the-scenes glimpses about every episode, livestreams with me and my collection of dictionaries, and the charming and supportive Allusioverse Discord community. This episode was produced by me, Helen Zaltzman, on the unceded ancestral and traditional territory of xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. A family in Vancouver BC is contesting the will of an 84-year-old family member who left a million-dollar fortune to a male escort she was seeing!
We're getting all investigative this week as we address songs that cover the "5 W's" - who, why, when, where...and WUT! Yes, that's right, W-U-T. Because our Third Lad this week is the utterly delightful Tracey Vath, bassist from the Vancouver indie pop trio WUT! It is an episode full of joyous laughter, the top 10 Satanic bands, and a brand new O3L game - "Wut 'chu Talkin' About, Brett?!?" Oh, and what happened in Vegas apparently didn't stay in Vegas. Since 2018, Vancouver BC's jangle-pop meets riot-twee trio WUT have been making a local name for themselves with their joyfully heartfelt live performances. In 2020, the trio released ‘NOW', an energetic cassette accompanied by 10 DIY music videos. These earnest and often humorous videos reflect WUT's playful yet sincere songwriting. Recently, WUT recorded ‘Mingling with the Thorns', their sophomore full-length album, out now on HHBTM Records. ‘Mingling with the Thorns' was created during two years of intermittent quarantines which caused guitarist Kaity McWhinney (Knife Pleats / Love Cuts), bassist Tracey Vath (Knife Pleats / Love Cuts), and drummer Lauren Smith (Tough Age / Jock Tears), to write songs independently, and share their ideas through countless emails, dropbox folders, and Google drives. Long periods of isolation were consumed by experimentation with different arrangements, and often an idea would be re-worked over and over (and over) again. This resulted in a collection of carefully crafted pop songs that reflect the bands mutual love for c86 jangle pop and early Flying Nun Records bands, with lyrical content drawing up themes that grapple with patriarchy and late stage capitalism; specifically the struggle to find personal autonomy within these social systems. Join me for a fascinating conversation around an exciting breakthrough in dementia detection that's offering real hope for early intervention. Dr. Hans Frykman, Chief Scientific Officer at Neurocode Laboratories, is here to share groundbreaking insights into cutting-edge biomarkers that can identify pathology associated with Alzheimer's disease before symptoms even appear. What's even more fascinating is how these same tools are revealing neuroinflammation caused by infections, including COVID, Lyme disease, and mold exposure—issues that are incredibly relevant in functional medicine today. The assays Dr. Frykman and his team have developed, and continue to research, are transforming the way we think about diagnosing and addressing neurodegeneration. We're talking about a potential game-changer that allows us to intervene earlier, reverse damage, and ultimately improve the trajectory of these conditions. This is an extraordinary time in science and medicine, and the work we're discussing today is at the forefront of it all. Here are the highlights of our conversation: - Leadership Requires Conscious Change Management: Sandra emphasizes that many leaders stand in a reactionary mode, making decisions under stress rather than responding thoughtfully. She advocates for leaders to raise their consciousness, pause, and assess their approach to change before reacting. - Change Readiness: In our current environment, leaders must be prepared to navigate barriers and the moving complexities of business. - Effective Communication in Change Management: One of the biggest reasons change initiatives fail is the lack of clear communication. Leaders must explain the ‘what and how' of change and the ‘why', ensuring alignment with team values and fostering trust. -The Importance of Self-Awareness and Adaptability: Sandra highlights the need for leaders to understand their change tendencies. Some naturally embrace change, while others prefer stability. Leaders should be mindful of their emotional triggers and practice "pattern interruption" to control their responses. -Creating Psychological Safety and Collaboration: Leaders should encourage curiosity, open dialogue, and co-creation in decision-making, ensuring alignment across different personality types and work styles. - The Power of Sustainable Leadership: True leadership sustainability is about maintaining personal energy and resilience. Leaders must manage their emotional states, practice self-care, and create environments where teams can thrive without burnout. About the guest: Sandra J. Horton is a Systemic Leadership Sustainability Strategist, Executive Coach, and Speaker, dedicated to helping CEOs, executives, and senior leaders create sustainable, high-impact leadership models that prevent burnout, build resilient teams, and drive long-term organizational success. "If you grow up being told that one of your first languages, Singlish, is actually a bad version of an already existing language, you kind of get this sense that “I'm just bad at language,” says Bibek Gurung, a former linguist who grew up in Singapore speaking Singlish with his family and friends, while schools and the government tried to quash it. "Language is a fundamental human skill. And to just have this sense that you're bad at this very fundamental skill really does a number to your self esteem and your abilities to communicate in general."
