If you have experienced long-term toxic or a narcissistic relationship you may find yourself disconnected from your body to numb out the emotional pain.  Dissociation is a protective mechanism, but it's not a healthy way to live. Dissociation can lead to chronic illness, difficulty engaging socially, and a lack of joy and connection. To shift out of this state, you must learn to reconnect with the body through somatic healing practices. This process is not easy, as we're often not taught to embrace our emotions, especially as women. I recently got back from traveling across the country to visit New York City with my two teenage sons. There was one moment in particular on this most recent trip that sums up the experience of discontentment and motherhood and how I've been able to start moving toward more contentment. I hope that this story and the tools I share today will help you move toward more satisfaction with your own experience of parenthood, as well.Discontentment & MotherhoodBefore we jump into the story, there's something about my past self that you need to understand.I have this old belief hanging around that things are never good enough. I always thought that things should be better. That I should do more to make our moments better. I have a general dissatisfaction with things and it shows up in parenting, as well as in the rest of my life. This constant feeling of being a little bit dissatisfied with so many things in my life is one of the big reasons I got into life coaching for myself. This is an ongoing struggle for me, and one of my 2023 goals is to cultivate more contentment.Shifting Out of DiscontentmentMy sons and I recently flew across the country from L.A. to New York, checked into our hotel and went to get some dinner. While I was sitting there, I noticed that I felt unhappy, disconnected from my kids and disappointed. So I got curious and started to coach myself through what I was feeling and thinking.I noticed some negative thoughts coming up about my kids, so I made a shift.I looked at them and thought to myself, “These are my kids. These are the people I raised.”And I felt satisfied and content. They're not perfect. They're humans. They're just regular people, but they're MY people. I'm their mom.I have big dreams, big plans and big desires for my life. And they've happened. But there's still this tug of, “but it's not good enough”. It's the thought that I don't have the right to feel settled. If I do, I'll never achieve anything. But in that moment at the ramen restaurant with my boys, those weren't the first thoughts that came through. It was, “These are the people you raised. You did it.”Finding Contentment My parenting journey is in a transitional period with one kid going to college and another learning to drive and going into his senior year. These teen years are tricky. On one hand, you need to let them go. To give them more freedom and responsibility. You're handing them their life so they can go out into the world and be whoever they're supposed to be. And on the other hand, you're scared that if you let go, they'll get hurt, they'll get in trouble, they'll fuck up. You're also afraid that if you let go, they'll leave and not come back, and you won't have a relationship. My goal has always been for them to have the emotional tools and skills to manage their own feelings and thoughts, to move through negative emotion, to be resilient in the midst of hard things and to take personal responsibility. When I look at my kids I see those goals and values I've held around being a mom, and I see that they're on their way. I feel that I've moved from being the leader of their lives. They're making most of their decisions. I am now the guide while they become the leader. Watching us go through this transition has been hard, painful and difficult. But I can look at our relationships and see that I did it. We stayed close. We stayed connected. I have a really genuine relationship with each of the kids, and I am so grateful for that.I'm thankful that I am not looking at my life now, or my children with regret or dissatisfaction. And I'm glad that I've done the personal work I've done so that I could enjoy it. There was a moment at that table when it...

Jennifer O’Neill is a graduate of The Institute for Integrative Nutrition and is on a mission to help women free their bodies from the pain of dieting and negative body image, and lead them to a life of freedom, balance, and joy around eating and fitness. She put herself through diet hell for nearly 30 years of her life and knows that it’s simply not worth it. She guides her clients to take action around food, fitness, and body image from an aligned place of love instead of hate. It is only by changing our minds about ourselves that we can then begin to learn that the love we are so desperately seeking is already inside of us. She is also the host of the newly launched podcast, Free Yourself From Body Prison, where she’s created a safe space to discuss body image, binge/emotional eating, weight loss, exercise ad finding the balanced middle ground between diet culture and anti-diet culture. Her primary focus is helping women create a more loving (or accepting) relationship with their body image, food and exercise. In this episode, Jennifer shares her personal journey to create a healthy relationship with her body, food and exercise. A huge turning point in her journey occurred when she read and studied A Course in Miracles (which also plays a foundational role in everything I teach!) as this is what shifted her relationship to her body, food and exercise from coming from self-hate and judgment to loving and accepting herself. It’s what helped her realize her worthiness did NOT come from how she did or didn’t look. This is a HUGE lesson that so many have yet to learn…mainly because our society does not teach us this. In fact, it teaches the opposite. I’m happy to have Jennifer on the podcast so this message of worthiness reaches more and more people. We also discuss what diet and anti-diet culture is (I had no idea this was such a polarizing issue, but, with the times we’re in, I’m also not surprised), what body neutrality is (I love anything that helps us see from a more neutral perspective!), how NOT to give away our power to “the scale” and how to dig deep into understanding why we self-sabotage, binge and emotionally eat (truly understanding the root of our emotions so our core beliefs about ourself can be healed). Ultimately, this is a message of empowering others to find what works for them without being swayed by all the noise that comes from the various camps of what one should or shouldn’t do when it comes to diet, exercise and healthily relating to our bodies. Jennifer offers one-on-one coaching to help you heal your relationship with your body, food and exercise. She’s also in the process of creating courses to support you in this process. I’m excited to announce that we have our first returning guest, Jessicka Herman! In Jessicka’s first interview, Balancing Love & Wisdom, we primarily focused on her personal spiritual journey as well as how she came to channel a group entity known as Vagrein. This time we’re talking about the powerful information that came through Vagrein that has now been beautifully organized in their book, Vagrein: Seeking Ends When Sharing Begins (available on Amazon). This book is a masterclass on unity consciousness (balanced love and wisdom) with relevance to wherever you are on your individual journey of awakening. Whether mastering unity consciousness is your intention or goal for your life or not, this book powerfully shifts our perspective on all major topics that each of us deal with in our daily life, which is where I focused our interview. In this interview, we go into the parent-child relationship, the romantic relationship (including how attraction works as well as it’s purpose on our soul journey to know ourself more fully), our relationship with money and the overhaul that our financial system is undergoing through the collective awakening, our relationship to our body (specifically how chronic ailments and health challenges are serving as a learning tool to turn us inward), how to properly understand and use our emotions to better align with our true nature, understanding our own inner power to co-create our lives through intention as well as how humans are increasing the speed with which we can learn and process information. When we’re able to frame all of the above within the context of moving toward unity consciousness, we begin to understand the inner workings of our relationship to life itself. And in doing so, we’re able to use our new understanding to quickly resolve all the ways we’ve been living out of alignment with higher truths about ourselves. This always leads to greater inner peace, fulfillment and joy. I see this information as the instruction manual for understanding life, where, for centuries, it has only been available in spiritual texts focused on the higher path. We’re living in a time of great awakening, where this information is finally being delivered to the masses. I hope you’ll join us in conversation where this much needed information is finding it’s way into the world in a much more widespread manner. You can connect with Jessicka via her website (www.jpherman.com), Facebook (Jessicka Herman), (Vagrein Channeling), and Instagram (@jessickaherman) and (@vagreinchanneling) for personal and channeled spiritual posts, as well as announcements around her public channeling sessions. This episode is a rerun of a previous episode on The Embody Podcast while I am on a short restorative hiatus. When you're depressed, paralyzed, shut down, or dissociated — knowing what is happening can support healing and a compassionate look at the body and how it's trying to protect us and adapt. This episode is a practical and scientifically-based discussion about understanding the basics of the nervous system in overwhelm or trauma. By noticing the signs, you can support your body in feeling more safety, resilience, and capacity with very basic tools. We are so used to going in the hard stuff of our lives and overriding and pushing beyond what our bodies need. This can create an auto override and autopilot — are we really here in our hearts and bodies? In this episode, I share many signs of nervous system overwhelm, 12 things to do to support and heal trauma, a bit of Polyvagal Theory and Somatic Experiencing, and the way our nervous systems can be affected in relationships. The more I have understood the nervous system, the more compassion I have been able to feel for others and humanity. How can we understand our nervous systems through animal behavior? Find out in this episode. I also bring forward questions I like to ask myself: How much of me is here? Where is my awareness/what is the quality of it? How am I in my body? Next week, I will share three experientials that are connected to this episode.   Links, Article, and Resources All Show Notes for This Episode

We have an inspiring episode this week with Crystal Harris, one of my oldest and dearest friends! Who can't use an extra dose of inspiration during these unusual times?! Crystal and I met when we were 15. I really don’t remember a ramp up time to our friendship. I have a vague memory of meeting and then I have consistent memories over the past 25 years that include her. Memories ranging from hanging out at each others house in high school to being her “fourth roommate in college” to actually living together in our early 20s to spending most of our 20s and early 30s single and carefree to sharing a recent FaceTime cocktail hour during this pandemic! But one memory I’ll never forget is receiving a call from a friend of hers on December 21, 2012 saying she’d been in an accident. My heart dropped and my mind raced as I waited to hear what had happened. “She’s going to be okay. She’s at the hospital” her friend said. Well that quelled the worst of my fears but she was in no way out of the woods. She spent the next three weeks in a burn care unit at SAMC (San Antonio Medical Center) recovering from third degree burns and skin graft surgery after falling backwards into a fire pit (she shares the full story in our interview). What most impressed me about her recovery was her ability to move through the emotional journey with grace. When things of this magnitude occur, some people emotionally crumble never to come out of that negative space. Others temporarily crumble before finding the strength to move through. Crystal never crumbled. She never fell into despair or depression over what occurred and the scars it left. She’s not once let this stop her from living her best life (and two of the best things in her life were yet to come when this accident occurred). Crystal has always been a bright light in the world but the fact she moved through her accident with such grace puts her in another category of shining lights…those who continue to shine, despite what life throws at them. Her story inspires us to minimize the trivial and to focus on the good in our life. It reminds us of the choice to move through our challenges with grace and gratitude, instead of resistance and frustration. It reminds us of our deeper soul nature, the place where qualities like grace, acceptance and love lives in us. All of which is extremely relevant to the current pandemic we're collectively experiencing. Join us in this powerful episode on moving through the unexpected with grace. In this episode, Shanna sits down with Meagan Smith, owner of Sookie Sookie Jewelry, to chat about her journey as a creative entrepreneur. Like many of us, Meagan grew up with two competing life philosophies in her head…one advising to follow the safe, secure route and another advising to “follow the gravitational pull of your inner passion”, which is how she found herself unhappily living the first philosophy, questioning her discontent. Knowing there must be more, she declared a new path for herself and DECIDED to “put herself in the energy of what she desired to create her life around”. For her, this meant showcasing her creative wares at a trade show, where customers (like my mom!) took an active interest in what she’d created. This single decision to show up at Fredricksburg Trade Days, began to create a ripple effect that has led to the reality she’s currently living. Today Meagan is well known for expressing her bohemian soul through her art. She creates wearable pieces through her Sookie Sookie hand painted jewelry line and home decor pieces she lovingly refers to as “painting junk”. She’s painted murals including one covering the side of a two story historic building, kitchen cabinets, front doors, storefronts (like Rustic Charm in Sabinal!), guitars, pianos, interior walls, canvases…and many more unique pieces in between. Her soulful art elicits feelings of free-spirited wanderlust with a combination of boho and western roots, making it easily recognizable by those who know her work. Meagan shares her journey along with the outlook on life that’s kept her moving forward, no matter what bumps in the road appeared. She’s the embodiment of “let your passion be bigger than your fears”. So many of us are stopped in our tracks before ever beginning because the fear of failure feels too big. Meagan shrugs and says “What’s the worst that can happen? You get your lights turned off? Who cares? It’s not like you’re going to die.” The bedrock of her belief system is “there’s a way through”, and because of this, she’s always found a way through. We’re so excited to share the story behind SoLive in today’s episode with its founder, Charlene Barnes (Charlene also happens to be our Executive Director, Shanna Schulze’s, Mom)! Charlene shares the inspiration behind her passion for health and wellness information (which started decades before this information was considered mainstream) and the ensuing journey it has led her on. A journey that included co-owning Herbal Thyme, a health store in Del Rio, Texas in the early 1990s where one customer’s request to address her cancer diagnosis without chemotherapy, radiation or surgery led Charlene to the unexpected: Dr. Frank Truitt. Dr. Truitt is a medical doctor who was successfully treating cancer, usually at stages three and four, with a medication that did not harm the patient’s healthy cells. This was 1997; nearly 23 years later, her friend and many others who have undergone this treatment are still thriving cancer-free today. In 2007, Charlene founded SoLive with the original intent to serve as a centralized information hub for informing people that Dr. Truitt’s treatment exists. She originally envisioned that the non-profit would aide Dr. Truitt in his own research (his scope as a scientific researcher expands beyond cancer, especially since he’s already found a medication that successfully addresses cancer). With time, SoLive’s mission has evolved into an organization fully independent of Dr. Truitt’s Lifeforce Hospital. We have expanded beyond just information about Amyloxine. Instead, SoLive now serves as an educational non-profit which shares information, including informing people about his cancer treatment, Amyloxine, and searching for other medical options that may exist, along with all natural options. We also focus on providing preventative information to help people avoid getting cancer in the first place. Collectively, our mission is to help people live a higher quality of life by aiding them with the best information to support them in their journey. Join Executive Director, Shanna Schulze, and board member, Shanna Covey, as they chat with Charlene about her journey to becoming a self-taught expert on health and wellness information, working as Patient Consultant for the brilliant Dr. Frank Truitt for the past 22 years, as well as the origin story of the formation of SoLive. Tracey Keller and I have a shared mission of teaching and encouraging people to come from love instead of fear. Where mine tends to take a general approach to its application, she primarily focuses on women’s relationship with their body, food and movement. She’s an eating psychology coach and a personal trainer who has been in the health, wellness and fitness industry her entire career, but, a few years ago, a deep dive course on eating psychology changed her entire approach to her work. She’s on a mission to help eradicate what she calls “The Barbie Illusion” in the minds of women. The Barbie Illusion points to the idea that all will be well when I look a certain way. It stems from the idea that something is missing. In dispelling The Barbie Illusion she’s helping women heal ideas of lack, come into more self-love and consume and move their bodies from a place of love and gratitude. Join us in this conversation about work that is so relevant and needed in the world. Tracey Keller's Bio: She's an Eating Psychology Coach, Life Coach and personal trainer, who works passionately with clients on navigating their relationship with food and movement, helping them set up practices that will lead to success in their highest calling. This approach effectively addresses weight concerns, binge eating, overeating, body image challenges, and various nutrition-related health concerns. Her approach is positive and empowering. She doesn’t see eating challenges merely as a sign that “something is wrong with you” – but as a place where one can more fully explore some of the personal dimensions of life that impact food, weight, athletic performance and health. Today Sean Patrick lives a beautiful life in Kalispell, MT combining his love for fishing and martial arts with his professional background in counseling and therapy under what he calls “Adventure Therapy”. But the road to beauty wasn’t handed to him on a silver platter. He had to work for it, where much of this work was transforming his inner world from being addicted to negative self-talk, not fully believing in himself as well as a physiological addiction to alcohol. Even once Sean was well established in living a positively oriented life, he encountered a neurological injury that tested all the healthy habits and mindset shifts he’d worked so hard to put in place. Sean is the embodiment of “change is possible”. And I’m so excited to share his story with you! In this episode, we talk about his early struggles with alcoholism, finding himself in a space of wanting to take his own life, opening up to self-love, doing the inner work to align with a more positively oriented mindset and life, changing majors 6 times to finally agreeing with what his soul knew he was meant to do all along, going through a Wimp to Warrior program to prepare and enter the ring for a cage fight, making a “wife list” (that worked out far quicker than he could have imagined!) and the work he’s doing through his company Evoke Changes. Living A Highly Engaged Life While Resting in the I AM w/ Alex Alioto

Alex Alioto lives in San Francisco and is the VP of Sales for a start up tech company called Whimstay. He’s one of the rare souls who is actively living a highly engaged life while simultaneously resting in the I AM. He hasn’t completely stabilized there but he rests there often enough to live from that space quite regularly (which is still very rare, yet accessible with practice). Most people are familiar with the term mindfulness, but resting in the I AM goes beyond mindfulness. Mindfulness is a tool used from within the program of the person. The person becomes mindful of what the person is doing, believing, thinking, etc. And in becoming mindful, the persons makes adjustments to what they’ve observed in order to feel better, more peaceful or sated in some way. But there’s something beyond the program of the person. Its in all of us and is spiritually referred to as the I AM. The I AM is beyond the distortions (fear and lack-based beliefs) of the person. Nothing can be added to it or taken away from the I AM (whereas all fear and lack-based beliefs rest on the idea that something can be added to or taken away from you). The I AM is where the peace that passes all understanding is known. It’s where higher energy is known (unconditional love, higher intelligence/wisdom, joy, bliss, etc.). In this state you are liberated from all fear and lack-based beliefs that are tied into the program of the person. This is the benefit consciously resting in the I AM offers us (and it's accessible to each of us with practice). In this conversation, we go deeply into what it means to live from the I AM, what it looks like in expression, the benefit it offers us (and the world)…as well as Alex’s personal journey of awakening, which includes a rock bottom moment of waking up facedown in a gutter in New York City, where he was a theater actor for 10 years. My intention with Always Shine Brightly, is to shine a light on all aspects of the spiritual path in order to build a strong bridge of understanding, no matter where you are in your journey. My conversation with Alex allowed us to shine a light on one of the higher aspects of the path. I hope your mind is opened to what's possible by opening to the depth of what lies inside you. Because aligning with and shining as the I AM is one of the purest ways you can shine your light. Note: this episode is rated explicit for some language used. I love Keilan McNeil’s energy. It’s the exact opposite of mine. Where I tend to be soft and gentle, he’s bold and fierce. But we’re coming from the same place in our expression and what we’re pointing to regarding the spiritual journey of awakening; it’s just two different ways of expressing it. His bold, edginess makes a much bigger splash than mine, meaning it can be triggering for some. But teaching through triggering can be highly effective because it cuts through the BS that gentleness never stirs up. What Keilan and I both understand is we need to be able to do both, depending on what the situation is calling for. For him, that meant learning from a few “Kanye West Moments”. Keilan is a powerful manifestor. In the (almost) two years I’ve known him, he’s lived in Florida, Toronto, went nomadic for a time and now lives in Irvine, CA, where we recorded our interview. Most of his choices occurred with little money and a lot of faith in himself and his co-creative power. He’s said yes to a $3000 trip with $30 dollars in his account and three weeks to come up with the rest. He moved to California with a job secured but no place to live or car to drive. Both of which worked out. In following his inner guidance, he’s had to leave people and jobs he loved to continually prioritize his own inner alignment. (Most are too scared to do this, but following your unique blueprint requires the willingness to do this). In this conversation, we talk about learning from his Kanye West Moments, his tips on manifestation and staying energetically and vibrationally aligned, his new love and passion for making conscious music, and utilizing a 9-5 job to prioritize his art (as opposed to expending creative energy free lancing when that same energy could be poured into his own art). Keilan embodies and shines his light in the world through a deep belief and confidence in himself and he powerfully expresses it through his spiritual writing, making conscious music and creating and editing purpose-driven videos, as well as though the love and care he gives to others. You can follow Keilan on Instagram (@musicbykei), where he writes powerful spiritual posts and shares the music he's creating. You'll also be entertained by his hilarious sense of humor. I met Lindsey nearly 10 years ago in a bagel shop in Guatemala (we were both volunteering as teachers in a nearby indigenous community through the same organization). During this year, we were inseparable, working in classrooms next to each other with only a four foot bamboo wall between us, working out nearly every morning together and adventuring together on weekends. It was a year of bliss where a lifelong friendship blossomed. I believe Lindsey came into this world shining bright. She’s someone who knew, at an early age, she was here to love God’s people and make a difference in the lives of others, especially women and children. In 2011, shortly after our time in Guatemala, she created her own non-profit, Sowing Seeds of Love, to serve women and children in and around Boquete, Panama. Her work in Panama continues today. Just as the case is in each of our respective journeys, it isn’t always a walk in the park. Challenges occur. Obstacles are encountered. But it’s what we do with those catalysts that matters most. Do we crumble before them or do we we find the strength in ourself to understand what they’re trying to teach us in order to move through them? In this conversation, Lindsey shares the struggles she encountered and opens up about the lessons in self-worth they were ultimately teaching her. Her ability to move through the cycles of frustration (healing the perceptions that were creating the frustration) and her ability to heal the untrue thoughts she picked up around failure and not being enough are a beautiful demonstration of what it means to move through the things that are dimming our light, in order to come out the other side shining brighter. Bios… Lindsey Parry grew up in a Military family with an older and younger sister. She’s a serial social entrepreneur who loves empowering others. She believes creativity, community and education have the power to change to the world. From 2010-2016 she lived in Central America where she started Sowing Seeds of Love, an educational non-profit working with indigenous women, children and orphans as well as a for-profit company. Sowing Seeds of Love's mission is to love people while providing resources that empower women and children through education and job and skills training initiatives. In 2016, she moved back stateside to Washington D.C., and has been there ever since. She currently runs a Creative Community Marketing and Events company as well as a life-style brand. She’s a firm believer “You have not lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” She’s a soul on a journey to constantly deepen in her own inner light, with a mission to love and lift others up, especially women and children. Grace Barbettini is a sweet soul. She has a calm, gentleness about her energy that I love. I essentially asked her to be on the podcast because I wanted to know the person behind the energy. What I love about our conversation is we immediately got to the heart of what this podcast is about: understanding why we do the things we do by asking where we’re coming from in our behavior (is it a compensation of some sort? If so, what healing is available in understanding the roots of our behavior?). And in doing this process of inquiry, we deepen in our own light, which allows us to shine brighter. For some people, it takes some sort of major catalyst to begin a process of inquiry, but, what I love about Grace, is she’s mining her everyday experiences for the treasures that lie in understanding where she’s coming from in her desire to do or not to do something. And that’s really what this journey of healing and awakening is about…being mindful of where we’re coming from in the most ordinary, everyday stuff so we begin to shift any sense of lack or fear to greater sense of inner abundance and love. Grace does this in ways we can all benefit from. She’s 24 (at the time of recording)...apart of a generation where there’s a compulsion to share everything on social media, yet she has a valuable process of asking herself why she’s posting what’s she’s posting. Is it to gain something? Or is it to purely share something without desiring or needing anything from it. In this episode we talk about going analog in a digital age, Grace's love for all things vintage 1970s (where it comes from), embracing curls, social media, being a dominant Type 2 on the Enneagram (and it's specific lessons), her new love for rollerskating and my weird obsession with skateboarding documentaries. Small note: We recorded this episode in beautiful Hotel Emma in one of the seating areas in the silos. I thought the circular nature of the silo and padding on the walls would be enough to create a quiet environment but there was a bit more background noise than we anticipated. BIG NEWS...! In the time since we recorded this interview, Grace started her business, The Juniper Sunroom, where she resales housewares, select apparel and fine oddities inspired from her Grandparent's basement from the 70s! What an honor it was to have her share a bit more about her grandparents and their influence on her in this episode. See how she's taken their influence and allowed it to inspire and shape her acutely 1970s vintage purveying eye by heading over to her business account on Instagram (@TheJuniperSunroom)! She also has an eye for staging so whether or not you're in the market for her goods, the photos are soothing all on their own. Leah Guerrero is one of the most interesting people I’ve ever met. She’s from a small town in South Texas but she’s lived in New York City (where she volunteered through AmeriCorps and later got her masters degree at a prestigious art school), spent extensive time in Botswana working with her best friend to lay the ground work for building the first pediatric hospital there (she also got married in Botswana!), lived in Sydney Australia (before dropping out of Bible College), moved back to her hometown (to teach art at the local school), then followed her husband to California where he found work but she didn’t (or at least not in the way she anticipated) to currently living in the Texas Hill Country where her and her husband currently own and operate The Inn Between, a Bed & Breakfast…and she’s only 32 years old (we think). I’ve titled this episode “Disappearing (INN) Service” because that’s exactly how I see Leah shining her light in the world. Sometimes we think it’s about being front and center (and it totally can be but it just doesn’t have to be), regarding the service role(s) we play in the world. For Leah that was initially through her art (showing it in galleries, driving an old school bus on a two month journey with the intention of creating an equalizing space for people of all demographics to come together) and do good endeavors with AmeriCorps and her work in Botswana. But today it’s through her role as an innkeeper, hence the title “Disappearing (Inn) Service”, where she provides a loving space for families to make memories together, solo travelers to rest and renew and everything in between (see what I did there? ;)). In this conversation, Leah shares her outer and inner journey. She shares the major lessons learned (like coming face-to-face with a dominant Type 3 Enneagram’s biggest fear), staying aligned with her inner voice/intuition (something’s she’s known and listened to since she was a little girl), what it means to fit in or have a sense of belonging wherever you are, and we also challenge the myth of selfishness (which, spoiler alert, is what it took for her to see that being an innkeeper was the right next step in her journey). I’ve shared amazing conversations with her my whole life! And I’m so excited to bring one of those conversations to YOU! Today’s guest is Phyllis Kruciak…a bestie…a lifer…a member of my soul tribe. We’ve known each other since elementary school. Growing up, she was a light for me, in many ways. She helped me navigate emotional situations. She broadened my mind just by sharing topics that were on her mind…things I wasn’t thinking about, but, because she brought them up, I got interested in them (and learned a lot). Since then, we’ve navigated our 20s and 30s together (and now the very beginning of our 40s!), often getting together for “catch up sessions” that involve a minimum of three hour nonstop chats. In this episode, we share the abrupt wall we each hit when we entered our first career type job and what it taught us, the challenges and blessings our unique gifts (in her case, intelligence) offer us in terms of inner growth and connecting with and understanding others, googling the meaning of life (the roots of that inquiry and the journey it leads us on), panning out into a more soulful perspective in order to shift from comparison to compassion, shifting from fear to love and from lack to greater inner abundance, dropping from our head to our heart (and back into our spiritual mind) in order to better balance love and wisdom, consciously connecting to service in our day-to-day and the power the law of allowance offers us in our personal growth journey. We fit a lot in our one hour conversation! It’s a soulful conversation that’s chock full of wisdom…one you won’t want to miss! Bios... Phyllis Kruciak is bright…like really bright. She once wrote an essay for a $25,000 scholarship the night before it was due and won the scholarship (none of us were surprised). She’s a system’s thinker meaning she can pull from multiple disciplines, like psychology, philosophy, spirituality, political science, etc., to draw observations, insights and solutions, which also makes her a great strategist and problem solver. When it comes to intelligence she has the best of both worlds…IQ and EQ (emotional intelligence). For the past 20 years, she’s held some sort of leadership position where she’s often simultaneously managing employees and strategizing on behalf of the business. I see her as a bright light in this world because she uses her gifts to help others. Whether she’s acting as a friend, boss, business partner, daughter, sister, aunt, etc., she uses her gift of insight with care and compassion for the person she’s helping. If we got everything we wanted, when we wanted it, there would be little room for true inner growth and awakening. So along the journey of life, we bump into catalysts meant to turn us inward in order to gain the gift(s) that lie inside them. By all (non-soul growth oriented) accounts, today’s guest, my sister-in-law, Emily Covey, had every right to be upset, frustrated and disappointed. She longed to be a mother…to have the maternal experience of carrying a child and bringing life into this world. But after YEARS AND EVEN MORE YEARS of trying to conceive she was no closer to the thing she longed for. This was the biggest frustration in her life...the thing she felt was missing. All would be okay if… Whether you relate to this exact catalyst or not, the idea that something is missing or should or shouldn’t have happened is common to all of us. It’s the source of our frustration, pain and suffering. It’s ALSO the thing leading us to a deeper awakening around the constricted perceptions we’re carrying…if we choose to use them to that end. Emily did. It wasn’t easy to see friends get pregnant…and then pregnant again. It wasn’t easy having friends skirt around telling her when they were pregnant for fear it would hurt her feelings. It wasn’t easy riding the cycle of hope and frustration month after month…year after year. Fortunately, she got her happy ending but it wasn’t until she faced and healed the pain around the idea of not having the thing she desired. It wasn’t until she learned she could be at peace without clinging and gripping onto the one thing she thought could offer her peace. And that’s the key lesson every catalyst is teachings us. I chose Emily as a guest on Always Shine Brightly because, despite all the ways she naturally shines bright, she did the work around the biggest thing that was causing her pain and dimming her light in those moments of deep frustration, which is exactly what I look for in a guest. Join Emily and I as she walks us through her journey to motherhood and shares the lessons she learned along the way. Have you noticed you feel freest when have a sense of safety, a comfort and knowing that no matter what you express, those who see it aren’t going to judge you or leave you? Why do we contract in certain situations? Why do we restrict our most natural expression and how can we free ourselves from these constraints? How can we be our most authentic self all the time...not just when outside circumstances offer us safety? Join spiritual author and life coach, Shanna Kay Covey, and Eating Psychology Coach and Personal Trainer, Tracey Keller, as they dive into understanding and healing our compensating behaviors (the ways in which we attempt to feel safe when we’re not coming from an innate sense of safety). Suggested Resource Mentioned In This Episode: During the episode Shanna referenced the Enneagram as a useful tool in helping you understand the compensating behaviors associated with your dominant enneagram type. You can find free tests online to help you discover which of the 9 enneagram types you are most likely dominant in. Remember not to get stuck on the online test results as they tend to characterize each type by their negative attributes. The point of understanding your dominant type is to understand the ways in which you are most likely seeking safety outside of yourself. The goal is to become aware of the pattern so you shift where you’re coming from. In healing what is causing the compensating pattern, you learn to come from a true sense of internal safety. When this occurs the compensating pattern is healed/no longer active in you. If you want to better understand how the Enneagram works and the potential for healing it offers, Shanna recommends reading The Sacred Enneagram by Chris Heuertz. She also suggests listening to The Sleeping At Last Podcast for the episode on your dominant type. ~ For more information on So Live, visit us at www.soliveinc.org.

You Have The Power to Choose How You See Yourself

More often than not, the way in which we see ourselves is limited to the experiences we’ve had, how people or the world has historically responded to us, what opportunities have come our way, etc. But what if, instead of relying on past data and current circumstances, we flipped this on its head and gained complete power over how we see ourself, what we’re capable of and/or who we need to step into being based on the desires we hold for ourself? What if we consciously chose the energy we embodied based on who we desire to be and how we desire to carry ourselves? This is the power we each individually have and it’s a crucial step to co-creating/manifesting a life in alignment with your desires. Join spiritual author and life coach, Shanna Kay Covey, and Eating Psychology Coach and Personal Trainer, Tracey Keller, as they dive into this topic on this week’s episode. Suggested Exercise Mentioned In This Episode: At the beginning of the episode Shanna suggested the following writing exercise to help better understand what your deeper desires are. Desire Exercise… Round 1: Out of all the infinite possibilities available to me, what do I want? Free write for 7 minutes. Round 2: What do I desire? Free Write for 7 minutes. Round 3: What do I truly desire? Free write for 7 minutes. Do all three rounds in one sitting and repeat the exercise a few times in one week. Then look back over what you wrote and pull out the desires that kept coming up. Those are your deeper desires and what you can apply to the manifestation processes mentioned in this episode. ~ For more information on So Live, visit us at www.soliveinc.org. Join life coach, Shanna Kay Covey, and Eating Psychology Coach and Personal Trainer, Tracey Keller as they dive into the power of knowing your purpose and the respective journey that led them to knowing theirs. Shanna shares how she went from working at a Top 5 accounting firm to volunteering in Guatemala for nearly one year to (finally) aligning with her purpose and the major lessons that occurred along the way. Tracey shares how an in depth course on eating psychology completely changed her perspective on health and fitness and how this led to her purpose. This episode encourages you to begin understanding (and questioning) where you’re coming from in your desire to feel better, safe, worthy, deserving, whole and loved because, as Shanna and Tracey discuss, we often go about trying to know these things in ways that never lead to the peaceful state we ultimately crave. This episode is chock full of wisdom and insights that can help you feel more purposeful and peaceful today, not someday when x…y…or z is in place. Suggested Exercises Mentioned In This Episode: At the end of the episode Shanna suggested two different meditations to begin tapping into your deeper nature. In the first meditation, she suggested sitting in a quiet space free of distractions for a few minutes and going over the following affirmations (feel free to add additional affirmations that feel good to you) while taking slow, deep breaths… I am whole and complete. I am fully worthy and deserving because I am. I am loving. I am Love itself. I am safe. I am completely perfect as I am. An alternative meditation (especially once you’re able to feel the inner state these affirmations are pointing to) is to drop into that space of knowing while taking deep, slow breaths for 10 minutes. From this space of feeling whole and complete and at peace, it’s best to begin asking: What is my purpose? Before you’re in this space, you risk asking what your purpose is from the idea that you are lacking something and that your purpose is an answer to the lack you feel. Your purpose, in its most pure from, is an extension of already being filled up. So do your best to heal the idea that something is missing. Think of purpose as an energy you want to express in the world by simply being it. When you do this you’re being in service to the collective, whether you see a tangible result or not. ~ Thanks so much for joining us! What if we began to see that not prioritizing self-care and not following the desires of hearts was actually the selfish act? [12:00] Where should people start when they’re looking to reduce their stress? [14:15] It is not a weakness to ask for help. [16:45] You need to be honest with yourself.
