Thanks for joining me in Session 315 of The Behavioral Observations Podcast. In this episode, I spoke with Drs. Gabi Morgan and David Adams to dive deep into trauma-informed behavior analysis. Gabi brings her 30-year journey in the field—from undergrad roots to professorship at Bay Path University—while David shares his evolution from child and family therapy to clinical psychology, with a heavy focus on foster and adoptive parenting. Both guests are passionate about closing the divide between trauma therapy and behavioral strategies, and they credit mentors like Dr. Jeannie Golden for lighting the way. We kick things off by unpacking what trauma really means. In doing so, as a content warning, please be aware that we do make general references to a variety of traumatic and adverse experiences. Having said that, David walks us through SAMHSA's three-part definition: the event, the experience, and the effects. It's not the event itself that defines trauma—it's the individual's response. He introduces "adverse conditioning experiences" as a behavior-analytic twist on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), spotlighting how negative associations get wired in through conditioning. From there, we contrast PTSD and complex PTSD. Same core symptoms (intrusive thoughts, avoidance, etc.), but complex PTSD adds prolonged exposure and three extra layers: impaired self-worth, rocky relationships, and emotional dysregulation. Gabi drives home a critical point: folks with developmental disabilities are at higher risk for trauma but often fly under the diagnostic radar. We need to get better at spotting trauma-related behaviors in this population. Screening, Brain Science, and Practical Strategies Screening is a big theme. We all agree behavior analysts aren't formally trained in assessment, but we have to be aware of how this is done. Gabi loves the Child Health and Development Institute's Child Trauma Screen (CTS), and the Massachusetts Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (Mass CANS) tool.  David then nerds out on the neurobiology: trauma affects the amygdala (hypervigilance), hippocampus (memory glitches), hypothalamus (stress gone haywire), and frontal lobe (decision-making on the fritz). Enter the "amygdala hijack"—when fear short-circuits rational thought. Bottom line? Kids in fight-or-flight aren't in a teachable moment. Safety and calm have to come first. We close the show with actionable takeaways: risk-benefit analyses for every intervention (especially with histories of food neglect), "kind extinction" (empathy + withholding reinforcers), and the six pillars of trauma-informed care (safety, trustworthiness, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, cultural competence). TIC isn't a "hyphenated" ABA—it's the whole framework. Advice for new BCBAs? Seek trauma training, question "business as usual," and be the stable adult in a kid's chaotic world. ¡Vótame en los Premios iVoox 2025! La de Texas es la historia de una frontera. Desde el primer avistamiento de sus costas en 1519 por parte de Alfonso Álvarez de Pineda, que había recibido el encargo de reconocer y cartografiar la costa del golfo de México, hasta su consolidación como potencia económica en el siglo XXI, Tejas es un microcosmos de la historia de América. Los primeros europeos en llegar a Texas fueron los españoles. En 1528 Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca naufragó cerca de la actual Galveston y recorrió el interior de lo que hoy es el estado de Tejas. Describió en su “Relación” la geografía y la cultura de los indígenas, lo que alimentó mitos como el de las Siete Ciudades de Cíbola que empujaron a otros conquistadores como Francisco Vázquez de Coronado o Hernando de Soto a emprender expediciones que exploraron el territorio. Pero el clima hostil, la ausencia de oro y la belicosidad de los indígenas desviaron la atención española hacia el sur, lo que dejó a Texas en esta primera fase en un relativo abandono. En el siglo XVII, los franceses intentaron colonizar la región. Establecieron un fuerte, el de San Luis, en la costa del golfo de México en 1684. Pero no consiguieron mantenerse. Los españoles, alarmados por la presencia francesa, se plantearon entonces colonizar la provincia mediante mediante misiones y presidios. Con ambos querían, por un lado, cristianizar a los indígenas y, por otro, asegurar su presencia para que, en el caso de que otra potencia europea apareciese por allí, fuese fácil repeler la incursión. Fueron estos colonos llegados desde Nueva España los que introdujeron la ganadería que terminaría convirtiéndose en uno de los símbolos de Texas con sus conocidas vacas Longhorn y los vaqueros que las conducían para asegurarse los mejores pastos. De aquellas misiones nacieron las primeras ciudades texanas. La más antigua es la de San Antonio, fundada en torno a una misión. Pero Texas, que así es como empezó a denominarse formalmente, era inmensa. Los españoles sólo ocuparon algunos valles, para lo demás prefirieron llegar a acuerdos con los indígenas locales como los apaches o los comanches. Tras su independencia en 1821 México heredó Texas y los pocos habitantes que se habían establecido allí. Para asegurar su control, el Gobierno mexicano fomentó la colonización tanto de mexicanos como de estadounidenses. Eso atrajo a empresarios como Stephen Austin, que se estableció con un grupo de 300 familias a orillas del río Colorado. Tras él vinieron muchos más. La llegada de colonos estadounidenses, muchos de ellos con esclavos, creo grandes tensiones ya que México había prohibido la esclavitud. Además, los colonos querían autonomía y eran muchos. El Gobierno mexicano terminó prohibiendo la inmigración desde Estados Unidos y eso hizo estallar la revolución texana de 1835, que culminó con la independencia de Tejas tras la victoria en la batalla de San Jacinto. Pero la nueva república era muy frágil y estaba asediada por conflictos con México y con los indígenas. Pervivió hasta 1845, momento en el que fue anexionada a EEUU. Esto provocó la guerra entre México y Estados Unidos que terminó muy mal para los primeros. El Tratado de Guadalupe-Hidalgo fijó la frontera en el río Grande y permitió la consolidación de Texas como estado. Durante la Guerra Civil los Texanos se unieron a la Confederación y tras la derrota se convirtió en un estado ganadero en el que comenzaba el salvaje oeste. Pero eso no duraría mucho. En 1901 se descubrió petróleo en la costa del golfo, lo que terminó transformando a Texas en una potencia económica ya que el petróleo animó el desarrollo y la creación de todo tipo de industrias. Las ciudades crecieron y atrajeron a millones de inmigrantes, entre ellos muchos hispanos que hoy representan el 40% de la población. En nuestro tiempo Texas es un estado grande y rico, su PIB es mayor que el de Canadá y su población no deja de aumentar. Texas es una metáfora de América. Una tierra extensa y llena de oportunidades con una historia breve, pero muy agitada. Describió en su “Relación” la geografía y la cultura de los indígenas, lo que alimentó mitos como el de las Siete Ciudades de Cíbola que empujaron a otros conquistadores como Francisco Vázquez de Coronado o Hernando de Soto a emprender expediciones que exploraron el territorio. Pero el clima hostil, la ausencia de oro y la belicosidad de los indígenas desviaron la atención española hacia el sur, lo que dejó a Texas en esta primera fase en un relativo abandono. En el siglo XVII, los franceses intentaron colonizar la región. Establecieron un fuerte, el de San Luis, en la costa del golfo de México en 1684. Pero no consiguieron mantenerse. Los españoles, alarmados por la presencia francesa, se plantearon entonces colonizar la provincia mediante mediante misiones y presidios. Con ambos querían, por un lado, cristianizar a los indígenas y, por otro, asegurar su presencia para que, en el caso de que otra potencia europea apareciese por allí, fuese fácil repeler la incursión. Fueron estos colonos llegados desde Nueva España los que introdujeron la ganadería que terminaría convirtiéndose en uno de los símbolos de Texas con sus conocidas vacas Longhorn y los vaqueros que las conducían para asegurarse los mejores pastos. De aquellas misiones nacieron las primeras ciudades texanas. La más antigua es la de San Antonio, fundada en torno a una misión. Pero Texas, que así es como empezó a denominarse formalmente, era inmensa. Los españoles sólo ocuparon algunos valles, para lo demás prefirieron llegar a acuerdos con los indígenas locales como los apaches o los comanches. Tras su independencia en 1821 México heredó Texas y los pocos habitantes que se habían establecido allí. Para asegurar su control, el Gobierno mexicano fomentó la colonización tanto de mexicanos como de estadounidenses. Eso atrajo a empresarios como Stephen Austin, que se estableció con un grupo de 300 familias a orillas del río Colorado. Tras él vinieron muchos más. La llegada de colonos estadounidenses, muchos de ellos con esclavos, creo grandes tensiones ya que México había prohibido la esclavitud. Además, los colonos querían autonomía y eran muchos. El Gobierno mexicano terminó prohibiendo la inmigración desde Estados Unidos y eso hizo estallar la revolución texana de 1835, que culminó con la independencia de Tejas tras la victoria en la batalla de San Jacinto. Pero la nueva república era muy frágil y estaba asediada por conflictos con México y con los indígenas. Pervivió hasta 1845, momento en el que fue anexionada a EEUU. Esto provocó la guerra entre México y Estados Unidos que terminó muy mal para los primeros. El Tratado de Guadalupe-Hidalgo fijó la frontera en el río Grande y permitió la consolidación de Texas como estado. Durante la Guerra Civil los Texanos se unieron a la Confederación y tras la derrota se convirtió en un estado ganadero en el que comenzaba el salvaje oeste. Pero eso no duraría mucho. En 1901 se descubrió petróleo en la costa del golfo, lo que terminó transformando a Texas en una potencia económica ya que el petróleo animó el desarrollo y la creación de todo tipo de industrias. Las ciudades crecieron y atrajeron a millones de inmigrantes, entre ellos muchos hispanos que hoy representan el 40% de la población. En nuestro tiempo Texas es un estado grande y rico, su PIB es mayor que el de Canadá y su población no deja de aumentar. Texas es una metáfora de América. Una tierra extensa y llena de oportunidades con una historia breve, pero muy agitada. Jon Taylor is an interdisciplinary scientist dedicated to the subject of anomalous phenomena related to cognition.He was born in Wakefield, England, and graduated from the University of Cambridge with an MA in Natural Sciences. He began his career in research and marketing within the field of scientific instruments. He then switched to consumer marketing and moved to Spain in 1976 to become International Marketing Director for wine producer Williams & Humbert Ltd., Jerez de la Frontera.Later, he joined the oil industry, and after engagement on contracts in Britain, Italy and Spain, he was transferred to the Middle East, where he served as Materials & Purchasing Manager for the National Drilling Company, Abu Dhabi.Taylor has always been intrigued by psychic phenomena, and when he returned to Spain in 1993, he started a full-time investigation of the physical and biological principles underlying precognition and intuition. His research continued for more than 25 years, during which he published in peer-reviewed academic journals and lectured to specialist audiences, as well as to the general public, in Britain and Europe.Taylor presented his theory of ESP in a lecture at the 56th Annual Convention of the Parapsychological Association (PA), held in Rome, Italy, in August 2013, and he described the theory in a paper titled “The Nature of Precognition” published in the Journal of Parapsychology, March 2014.He then applied his theory to explain intuition, and presented his research at the PA Convention in Paris, July 2019. He was also invited to participate in a workshop organized by the Institut Métapsychique International, in which 30 scientists from all over the world examined the theoretical aspects of psychic phenomena. The workshop was in celebration of the Centenary of the IMI. In Session 313, Dr. Cody Morris from Salve Regina University, and the newly re-launched All Things Behavior podcast (please also see The BAPcast Podcast), joins me to dive into a topic that has merited quite a bit of discussion in Applied Behavior Analysis. These days, you pretty much have to be living under a rock in ABA circles to not have noticed the increased focus on assent practices in treatment programming. Cody is one of the preeminent authorities on this topic, and in this episode, we talk about the definitions of assent, how assent has been conceptualized in other fields, and how it applies to the work we do as Behavior Analysts. In doing so, we review Cody's article, Toward a Further Understanding of Assent, which was published in the winter 2024 issue. Long story short, if you're looking for a nuanced discussion on this topic that avoids binary, black and white conceptualizations, you've come to the right place. Assent Procedures in Research: An examination of assent procedures in behavior analytic research, including the distinction between free choice and fair choice. The episode explores how researchers and clinicians can minimize undue influence and coercive contingencies while arranging fair choices and creating socially acceptable outcomes. In Session 311, I sit down with Christina Nylander and Leah Hussain from Apollo Behavior to talk about culturally sensitive approaches to Autism intervention. We dive into three case studies that show how flexible, individualized care can make a huge difference in building the rapport that's so important in our clinical work. Along the way, we share strategies for gaining parent buy-in, supporting bilingual language development, and using AAC devices to help children communicate more effectively with their families.
