La historia de Gonzalo Guerrero es una de las más fascinantes de la época de la conquista de América. Nacido en Palos de la Frontera hacia 1470 y tras servir como arcabucero del rey en la Guerra de Granada y en las campañas de Italia, pasó a las Indias, donde su vida cambió radicalmente, pero no en la forma en la que cambiaron las de sus paisanos. En Italia había servido el mando del Gran Capitán, aprendió tácticas de infantería y el uso de armas de fuego que resultarían decisivas en su futuro. En 1511, poco después de haber llegado a las Indias, naufragó cerca de las costas de Jamaica. Él y un clérigo llamado Jerónimo de Aguilar fueron los únicos supervivientes que llegaron a la península de Yucatán, donde fueron capturados por los indígenas. A diferencia de Aguilar, que trató de mantenerse fiel a su identidad española, Guerrero decidió integrarse plenamente en la cultura maya. Se sometió a dolorosos tatuajes y perforaciones, adoptó la vestimenta local y ascendió en la jerarquía social gracias a su valor. Al servicio del cacique Nachán Can, Guerrero revolucionó la estrategia militar indígena: introdujo formaciones compactas, construyó fortificaciones de madera y enseñó tácticas de asedio y de emboscada para neutralizar la caballería española. Su asimilación fue tan profunda que se casó incluso con una princesa, Zazil Há, dando origen al primer mestizaje voluntario documentado en América. En 1519, cuando Hernán Cortés le ofreció ser rescatado, Guerrero rechazó unirse a él. Explicó a Aguilar que ya era un cacique con familia y que sus tatuajes le impedirían ser aceptado por sus compatriotas. Durante décadas, fue el principal obstáculo para la conquista de Yucatán, derrotó a varios capitanes españoles mediante el uso de la desinformación y el conocimiento de la psicología y las armas de sus antiguos paisanos. Murió en 1536 en la actual Honduras luchando en defensa de los indígenas contra las tropas del capitán Lorenzo de Godoy. Though Wisconsin hasn't been faced with the major ICE raids as we've seen in LA, Chicago, and Minneapolis, there is growing concern that ICE will arrive in Wisconsin. Governor Evers said this week that the state is preparing for this inevitability. To talk about ICE raids and the larger context of anti-immigrant sentiment in the US, host Allen Ruff is joined by Armando Ibarra.  Ibarra works with Voces de la Frontera, an organization with deep roots in Wisconsin. Founded in 1994, the organization responded to the displacement of people from NAFTA. Over the years Voces has helped more than 16,500 families create “family disruption plans” and has held “know your rights” sessions for more than 30,000 people across Wisconsin. Voces de la Frontera will be holding its annual assembly this weekend. Ibarra also discusses the US as a land of immigrants in a land of anti-immigrants, from colonization,  Westward expansion, and the Chinese Exclusion Act, to the present. Ibarra says that the US is no longer pretending not to be an empire, as we've seen with the Trump  administration's aggression in Latin America.  They also discuss the Supreme Court ruling that legitimizes racial profiling, the reframing of protest as “domestic terrorism,” the rise of state-sanctioned violence against immigrants, and the 287(g) programs that deputize local law enforcement to act as immigration agents. Voces organizes a 24-7 emergency ICE hotline at 1-800-427-0213. Armando Ibarra is a Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor in the School for Workers. Energía eléctrica, medicamentos, maquillaje y cuidado de la piel, son algunos de los productos que más exporta Colombia hacia Ecuador y que tendrán un arancel del 30% a partir del 1 de febrero. Desde Davos, el presidente de Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, anunció que todas las exportaciones desde el vecino país tendrán esa tasa porque considera insuficiente el compromiso de Colombia con la cooperación bilateral en materia de seguridad. Colombia es el tercer país que más exporta productos a Ecuador, con un 7.3% en la participación del mercado ecuatoriano, detrás de China y Estados Unidos. Si el arancel del 30% a todos los productos colombianos entra en vigor el 1 de febrero, como lo anunció el presidente Daniel Noboa, varios políticos ecuatorianos temen que en realidad su país sea el más afectado.   “Puede ser muy grave” “Ojalá Colombia no tome la misma medida, que es lo que se acostumbra en estos casos, porque sería una situación mucho más perjudicial para el Ecuador. Hay que ver qué es lo que nosotros vendemos y qué es lo que ellos venden. Nosotros vendemos barcos, vendemos madera, vendemos preparados de pescado y ellos, en cambio nos venden productos farmacéuticos, medicinas, plásticos, es decir, productos terminados. Si Colombia toma una medida similar, pueden encarecerse”, explica a RFI el parlamentario andino Virgilio Hernández. Nos ha llegado a vender hasta 450 megavatios de energía y en estas últimas semanas precisamente Colombia estaba trabajando en un reglamento que permita que las operadoras privadas vendan energía a Ecuador. Es una energía que además no ha podido ser reemplazada porque el Ecuador no ha generado en estos últimos meses ni en estos últimos años energía termoeléctrica ni de ninguna otra naturaleza. Por lo tanto, esto puede ser muy grave lo que puede suceder en esa materia”, indica.  Comunidad Andina Para Hernández, hay otra vía más diplomática para solicitarle al Gobierno colombiano que aumente su compromiso con la cooperación bilateral en materia de seguridad: “El presidente Daniel Noboa es presidente pro tempore en este momento de la Comunidad Andina de Naciones. Lo que debía haber hecho es convocar a una reunión de emergencia del Consejo Presidencial Andino e incluso del Consejo de Ministros de Relaciones Exteriores, para tratar de forma inmediata y poder llegar a acuerdos”, estima. La seguridad en la frontera entre Colombia y Ecuador enfrenta una crisis creciente debido a la actividad de disidencias de las FARC, como los "Comandos de la Frontera", a quienes se atribuye el tráfico recurrente de grandes cargamentos de droga. La amenaza también incluye ataques contra la fuerza pública, destacando el asesinato reciente de 11 militares ecuatorianos en operativos contra la minería ilegal en la Amazonía. Los 10 productos que más exporta Colombia a Ecuador son: energía eléctrica; medicamentos dosificados; insecticidas, raticidas y antirroedores; vehículos para transporte de mercancías; hilos, cables y conductores aislados para electricidad; productos para el cabello; productos de belleza, maquillaje y cuidado de la piel; azúcar de caña; aceites de petróleo; agentes de superficie orgánicos (utilizados para crear productos de cuidado personal, agricultura o industria textil). Otros productos son café, artículos plásticos para envasado o vehículos para turismo.

These experiences sparked her interest in efficient, broadly applicable learning strategies. Why Note-Taking Strategies Matter We discuss the value of graphic organizers and the Cover, Copy, Compare (CCC) strategy: Graphic organizers visually display relationships between concepts. CCC is a structured, active-response method that strengthens memory, similar to flashcards. Sarah emphasizes how behavior-analytic techniques can support higher-order thinking processes often considered "cognitive." CCC and Stimulus Equivalence Sarah walks through stimulus equivalence with clear examples, showing how teaching certain relations can produce broader learning without direct instruction. She also highlights a study where CCC and graphic organizers helped learners prepare for tests—even under intentionally challenging conditions. Graphic Organizers in Action Key findings from Sarah's research: Learners who drew more structured organizers performed better. Teaching organizer use during test conditions did not hinder performance. Visualizing relationships among stimuli predicted task success. Training Learners to Use These Strategies Sarah outlines her training sequence, including pre-tests, video instruction, practice with familiar material, and application to abstract stimuli. (2025) Research Findings Most participants quickly mastered abstract relations and passed post-tests after brief training. Notably, all participants used the CCC strategy—some even more meticulously than required. Educational Technology, Engagement, and Mediation Participants reported the educational technology intervention was easy to use and helpful, contrasting with high dropout rates in similar studies. Sarah also describes how participants naturally used private verbal behavior, such as naming stimuli or creating stories, to aid learning. Visual Learning Tools in ABA We discuss the broader application of visual supports—graphic organizers, flashcards, handwriting—and their role in enhancing learning efficiency for both adults and children with autism. In Session 317, I sit down with Dr. Francesca Delia Espinoza to revisit one of the most foundational—but often misunderstood—topics in behavior analysis: eye contact. We explore why eye contact shouldn't be treated as a simple objective, but instead understood within its broader social and developmental context. Francesca explains how eye contact is better re-framed as "eye-looking," and why behavior analysts need a strong conceptual foundation for evaluating when, how, and why to teach it. We discuss her recent paper in Perspectives on Behavior Science, which encourages practitioners to analyze the controlling variables behind eye contact rather than relying on rote teaching procedures. We then shift into the role of eye contact in autism development and early intervention. Francesca discusses how deviations in gaze behavior can influence a child's learning trajectory, and why early, naturally occurring social contingencies can make such a significant difference. We also touch on the potential aversiveness of eye contact for some individuals, and how to navigate that ethically and effectively. Our conversation expands into related research on social media, gaze avoidance, and how adults and children with autism engage differently with eye-related cues online. Francesca also talks about her Substack newsletter, "What Darwin Taught Me," which blends behavioral science with accessible and engaging writing. From there, we explore her creative work in conceptual fiction, including her "Aura" series from her Substack Newsletter — a not-too-distant science-fiction world where behavior analysts work alongside AI systems that analyze sessions, generate programs, and support day-to-day clinical tasks. This leads us into a broader discussion about the role of AI in applied behavior analysis, including its promises, limitations, and the importance of preserving hands-on clinical expertise. Francesca describes one of the short stories in the Aura series about behavior analysts who travel to developing countries, only to realize their reliance on technology becomes a liability when the systems fail. It's a striking reminder that behavior change happens in real time, and nothing replaces skilled human interaction. We close by reflecting on how emerging technologies—AI, automation, and digital platforms—might shape the future of ABA for better or worse. Thanks for joining me in Session 315 of The Behavioral Observations Podcast. In this episode, I spoke with Drs. Gabi Morgan and David Adams to dive deep into trauma-informed behavior analysis. Gabi brings her 30-year journey in the field—from undergrad roots to professorship at Bay Path University—while David shares his evolution from child and family therapy to clinical psychology, with a heavy focus on foster and adoptive parenting. Both guests are passionate about closing the divide between trauma therapy and behavioral strategies, and they credit mentors like Dr. Jeannie Golden for lighting the way. We kick things off by unpacking what trauma really means. In doing so, as a content warning, please be aware that we do make general references to a variety of traumatic and adverse experiences. Having said that, David walks us through SAMHSA's three-part definition: the event, the experience, and the effects. It's not the event itself that defines trauma—it's the individual's response. He introduces "adverse conditioning experiences" as a behavior-analytic twist on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), spotlighting how negative associations get wired in through conditioning. From there, we contrast PTSD and complex PTSD. Same core symptoms (intrusive thoughts, avoidance, etc.), but complex PTSD adds prolonged exposure and three extra layers: impaired self-worth, rocky relationships, and emotional dysregulation. Gabi drives home a critical point: folks with developmental disabilities are at higher risk for trauma but often fly under the diagnostic radar. We need to get better at spotting trauma-related behaviors in this population. Screening, Brain Science, and Practical Strategies Screening is a big theme. We all agree behavior analysts aren't formally trained in assessment, but we have to be aware of how this is done. Gabi loves the Child Health and Development Institute's Child Trauma Screen (CTS), and the Massachusetts Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (Mass CANS) tool.  David then nerds out on the neurobiology: trauma affects the amygdala (hypervigilance), hippocampus (memory glitches), hypothalamus (stress gone haywire), and frontal lobe (decision-making on the fritz). Enter the "amygdala hijack"—when fear short-circuits rational thought. Bottom line? Kids in fight-or-flight aren't in a teachable moment. Safety and calm have to come first. We close the show with actionable takeaways: risk-benefit analyses for every intervention (especially with histories of food neglect), "kind extinction" (empathy + withholding reinforcers), and the six pillars of trauma-informed care (safety, trustworthiness, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, cultural competence). TIC isn't a "hyphenated" ABA—it's the whole framework. Advice for new BCBAs? Seek trauma training, question "business as usual," and be the stable adult in a kid's chaotic world. In Session 313, Dr. Cody Morris from Salve Regina University, and the newly re-launched All Things Behavior podcast (please also see The BAPcast Podcast), joins me to dive into a topic that has merited quite a bit of discussion in Applied Behavior Analysis. These days, you pretty much have to be living under a rock in ABA circles to not have noticed the increased focus on assent practices in treatment programming. Cody is one of the preeminent authorities on this topic, and in this episode, we talk about the definitions of assent, how assent has been conceptualized in other fields, and how it applies to the work we do as Behavior Analysts. In doing so, we review Cody's article, Toward a Further Understanding of Assent, which was published in the winter 2024 issue.
