"Cultivating Queens of Creativity": In this enlightening episode of Detroit is Different, host Khary Frazier welcomes Alexis Smith, whose radiant passion for nurturing young Black girls' artistry beams as bright as a mural on a summer day in the city. Smith, shaped by the rich history and legacy of Malcolm X Academy and guided by the vision of Dr. Watson, reflects on being among the first female students and one of Nefertari's mentees to carry forward this spirit of empowerment. With vivid recollections of singing in choirs, honing her culinary artistry, and exploring a world of visual expression, Alexis shares how these early experiences inspired her to pay it forward. Today, she's creating a girls' program that braids together the cultural threads of African-centered mentorship with a deep appreciation for culinary, visual, and performing arts, weaving a supportive tapestry that honors the past while uplifting the next generation of creative Black girls in Detroit. EPISODE 33 - “Zachary Scott: Star of the Month (May)” - 04/29/2024 Suave, debonaire, and effortlessly charming, ZACHARY SCOTT is best known for his role in MICHAEL CURTIZ's film noir classic Mildred Pierce (1945). As the duplicitous, silver-tongued charmer Monte Beragon, he romances Mildred, played by JOAN CRAWFORD (in her Oscar-winning role), and Mildred's daughter, Veda (ANN BLYTH). This became Scott's signature role: the sexy cad who was usually at his best swindling, seducing, or being a general scoundrel. It was always fun watching Scott's dastardly ways unfold. He could rock a tux, looked naked without a martini in his hand, and always had a cigarette close by. He was so magnetic that he could even make film-goers feel sorry for him. While he seldom got to play the good guy, when he did, as in what is perhaps one of his best roles in JEAN RENOIR's The Southerner (1945), you realize the versatility that he seldom had the opportunity to display. With a career that included over 40 films and dozens of television roles, ZACHARY SCOTT is our Star of the Month. Episode No. 635 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Leslie Martinez and curator Anthony Graham. MoMA PS1 in Queens is presenting "Leslie Martinez: The Fault of Formation," through April 8. The exhibition features paintings built with paint, folds, pools, and collaged materials such as rags and dried acrylics. Martinez's way of making paintings both mines the history of abstraction, but also a no-waste approach informed by methodologies of rasquachismo, a term coined by scholar Tomás Ybarra-Fausto to describe a Chicano "attitude rooted in resourcefulness yet mindful of stance and style." The show was curated by Elena Ketelsen González. Martinez was previously featured in a solo show at the Blaffer Art Museum, University of Houston. Their work is in the collection of museums such as the Dallas Museum of Art, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. The Speed Art Museum in Louisville is showing Martinez's work in "Current Speed: Angel Otero/Leslie Martinez" through March 24. The exhibition features works by the two artists that are new to the Speed's collection. The presentation was organized by Tyler Blackwell. On the second segment, a re-presentation of curator Anthony Graham on the Alexis Smith retrospective he organized at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in 2022. Smith died earlier this week. She was 74. For images, see Episode No. 568.

Entrepreneurship since the pandemic is a rising trend. Leading that charge is women. From starting a business to expanding those opportunities through franchises, women entrepreneurs are blazing a path to success. And how are they doing that? Through storytelling in marketing, to creating a community within their consumer bases. The canned alcoholic beverages market is growing, projected to reach USD 45.72 billion by 2030. And that puts the market at the center of opportunity for entrepreneurs: Alexis Smith and Nicole Craven, are Co-Founders of Après Hours, a ready-to-drink espresso martini cocktail brand. Smith and Craven created the idea for Après Hours in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic struck. And let's face facts; it was a time when everyone needed a boost. And an espresso martini cocktail was more than just a little appealing.Tuesdays with Morrisey host Adam Morrisey can relate, and he wanted to know more. He chatted with Smith and Craven about their success, their road to creating this new beverage sensation, now available in over forty states and counting, and how storytelling helped grow their brand.“We thought, surely, there was already an espresso martini in the can at the time,” Craven said. “Canned drinks are becoming really popular.”“You had ranch waters; you had everything,” Smith added. “There are even hard coffees in the market. We tried a few of them. All of them were filled with high-end dairy and sugar and didn't taste the way an espresso martini should taste. When we were looking through the liquor stores, which were the only things that were open at the time, we realized there were no canned espresso martinis, so that's when we decided to put our heads together and look into it.”Morrisey, Smith, and Craven discuss storytelling...● Utilizing marketing and storytelling skills to bring this product to market● The year-and-a-half journey of developing the Après Hours brand● Building consumer brand equity through social interactions, branding, storytelling, and merchandising“We wanted everybody to feel like they were a part of the process of creating Après Hours because they really are,” Smith said. “Our customers are our bread and butter. We want them to feel like they are part of every step of the way.”About AlexisAlexis Smith is a Texas-based PR and digital marketing director and Co-Founder of Après Hours. Louise Blain goes on a virtual city break, sampling the soundtracks of gaming's most compelling urban landscapes. She takes in some of the cities which are centre stage in video games such as Venice in Tomb Raider 2 with a score by Nathan McCree and the terrifying plague ridden imaginary city of Yharnam in Bloodborne, beautifully brought to life by the composer Tsukasa Saitoh and others. And to hear how music enhances these gaming metropolises, Louise hears from the composing duo Joe Henson and Alexis Smith - known as The Flight - who wrote the Ivor Novello award-winning score for Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which imagines the cities of ancient Greece.

Snake Path consists of a winding 560-foot-long, 10-foot-wide footpath in the form of a serpent, whose individual scales are hexagonal pieces of colored slate, and whose head is inlaid in the approach to UC San Diego's Geisel Library. The tail wraps around an existing concrete pathway as a snake would wrap itself around a tree limb. Along the way, the serpent's slightly crowned body circles around a small "garden of Eden" with several fruit trees including an apple, a fig and a pomegranate. These pointed allusions to the biblical conflict between innocence and knowledge mark an apt symbolic path to the University's main repository of books. The concept of finding sanctuary within oneself - outside the idealistic and protected confines of the university - speaks directly to the student on the verge of entering the real world. Same Old Paradise, a mural painted by Alexis Smith, was commissioned by Brooklyn Museum in 1987 as a temporary installation and then remained rolled-up for thirty years. Alexis worked with Lucia Vinograd to develop the five-point perspective of the orange grove and the colors in the scales of the snake that turned into a paved road. Alexis loved to drive, and when you drive and look out the window you are experiencing something akin to her work—an ongoing visual collage. You see one thing after another. Alexis Smith also had become fascinated with the idea that instead of having paradise be a place, paradise might be a state of mind. Alexis shares her experience going through anorexia and her journey towards recovery.Alexis experienced depression at a young age in grade 7, and says at the time she wasn't sure what it was. She had always been very involved in sports and music. A year later she felt better, and in grade 9 decided to pursue a healthier regiment with better eating and exercising. She said it may have even started a year before when she was tracking everything with her Fitbit. In trying to fit all the goals that the technology set for her, it began to be a decline mentally and physically. Her parents were suspicious and eventually it was revealed that Alexis had an eating disorder, something that Alexis herself had started to realize. She spent time in the Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was there 6 days and had a feeding tube, which followed her home and remained with it for four months.Alexis says she was not rebellious, however she did have resistence against her meal plan, and for some time she didn't want to recover. Her message to listeners is recovery is possible and "so worth it".She is a psychology undergrad and will be applying with clinical mental health programs with plans on opening her own practice specializing in eating disorder recovery. We spoke to parents and how the communication transpired that led to her hospitilization, to Alexis explaining the healing of her body was important before she could heal her mind, and her experience with her therapist.Alexis has her own podcast that covers many aspects of mental health called The Every Ounce Podcast, and she can be found on Instagram where she has resources for people going through recover for all ages @everyounce.ofstrength.#bulimia #bulimiarecovery #bulimiaover40 #midlifebulimia #bulimiaover50 #eatingdisorder #eatingdisorders #bullimiaddict #iamthatgal #bulimiacoach #bingepurge #bingeingandpurging #throwup #deceit #hide #lie #food #overeating #bleepbulimia #podcast #itunes #apple #buzzsprout #amazonmusic #alexa #alexissmith #everyounceofstrength #theeveryouncepodcast For further support you can visit my group on FB at https://www.facebook.com/groups/bullimiaddict Find me on Instagram @bullimiaddict and @bleepbulimia Blog https://www.bullimiaddict.com To sign up as a guest on my podcast visit https://www.bleepbulimia.com You can also visit us on FB at https://www.facebook.com/groups/bleepbulimia New Release Kindle or Signed Copy!
