From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.An arts retreatAndrew Rosendorf of Minneapolis says he wouldn't be the playwright he is today without the support he received early in his career from the Tofte Lake Center. He wants artists at all levels of their career to know that applications for next summer's artist retreats are open now through the end of December. Andrew says: I just want you to imagine going to a pristine lake near Ely, Minnesota, that's adjacent to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. You paddleboard, you canoe, you wade feet into the lake. You sit around a fire pit at night looking up at the crystal-clear night sky, like you're at a planetarium. And you also get a work on your art surrounded by a community of artists. That's Tofte Lake Center. I find it's a soul-centering place that leaves lives and breathes the value that nature is nurture. It gives access to artists at all levels of disciplines, and identities: those who are emerging, parents, BIPOC artists, arts educators who need time to center their own work and small collaborative teams. I first got introduced to Toffee Lake Center because about 15 years ago, when I was in my late 20s, I went there to work on a play, and Liz Engelman, who is the founder and who runs Tofte Lake Center, said, “Come work on your play. We believe in you and your voice.” And for any artist starting out, there's a huge sense of imposter syndrome, and here was a place early in my career telling me I belong, and that's kind of everything for an artist.— Andrew RosendorfGratitude and celebrating loveKerry Johnson is the high school choir director in Worthington. This Sunday, she's headed to the Worthington Chamber Singers' Christmas concert. The theme of the concert is “Love Came Down,” and for this 30th anniversary performance they will sing a work they commissioned from Venezuelan composer Reinaldo Moya, entitled “Ya Germinaba.” The concert is Sunday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Worthington. The concert is free, with a free-will offering. Kerry adds: Eric Parrish, the director, just really kind of has a knack for choosing themes and music that just really become more timely as the process of preparing that music goes on. This year, the focus is on hope and on gratitude and on celebrating love, and the fact that we are more similar than we're not. And I think this fall, especially, that's an important message to to put out into the world, just that we have a lot of common ground that we need to tap into. — Kerry JohnsonEscape into the world of dreams Mabel Houle appreciates the vibrant community of artists living in her Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis, and she recently got a sneak peek at a show by three local artists at the Vine Arts Center. “Dreams and Abstract Schemes” features the works of Kim Pickering, Susan Kolstad and Karen Brown. It will be on view for the next three Saturdays, including during this Saturday's Seward Frolic. Mabel appreciates art that transports us away from reality and into another world. Mabel says: I find Susan's collages of these earthy landscapes very soothing, very comforting. Her paper has such wonderful textures, and the colors are just calm and peaceful; and that's quite different [from] Kim's vivid dream images, which are more mind-bending, very colorful, very, very abstract — just beautiful images of something that's not in this world. Karen creates these very unique sculptures that are not completely human and not completely animal.— Mabel Houle

Nikolaj Schmid, chief international economist at T. Rowe Price, says he's expecting a correction soon "but it's not going to be something too deep or too dark or too scary," noting that the economic backdrop remains strong enough that the Federal Reserve can likely finish the year with just one rate cut. Schmid discusses T. Rowe's 2024 Mid-Year Outlook, and notes that he is concerned that with foreign central banks already having cut rates, the Fed's timing is now more critical because it does not want its monetary policy to be too far out of sync with the rest of the world. John Cole Scott of Closed-End Fund Advisors compares two high-yielding offerings from Ares, showing that while both could be viable and attractive options for diversifying a portfolio into the alternative credit space, there's much more to making an investment decision than a big yield. Plus, Karen Brown, a reporter at New England Public Media and the host of "The Secrets We Keep" podcast talks about financial secret-keeping, particularly around the salaries we make and what ending the secrecy might mean for individuals and for society.

Even people who are willing to divulge the most intimate details about their lives are hesitant to talk about how much money they earn. This episode looks at the origins of that pressure to keep your pay a secret, including who benefits and who gets harmed. Karen Brown talks to experts and activists about the role of pay secrecy in gender and race wage gaps — and recounts one recent case study in the publishing industry. And she considers why even the loudest advocates for pay transparency find the topic of money so awkward. We meet:Carl Lavigne, a library worker in Michigan who puts his salary in his email signature as a social experiment.Hannah Williams, a 20-something woman who, after discovering she was underpaid as a data analyst, started a TikTok channel interviewing people on the street about their salaries. Her company, Salary Transparent Street, now pays her more than she got as an analyst.Andrea Johnson, a policy advocate at the National Women's Law Center, about campaigns to increase pay transparency as a way to reduce the gender wage gap.Tochi Onyebuchi, a Black science fiction author who started a Twitter campaign in which white and Black writers publicly announced how much they got for book advances in order to call out the publishing industry for its race-based pay discrepancies. Then, Karen wraps up the series with what she learned about secrets, ending with a defiant anti-secret song by Amherst musician Mary Lambert. The Secrets We Keep is written/produced/hosted by Karen Brown, edited by Sam Hudzik, with music by Katie Semro. The explosion in mail-in genetic testing has busted so many secrets out of the proverbial closet, as people discover that the biggest secret in their life is their own origin story. This episode looks at the personal and societal costs of these biological secrets over generations — and the fallout, after those secrets are unraveled. It also considers why so many families of the past kept fertility treatment a secret. We meet: Lisa, an Amherst, Massachusetts, grant writer, who discovers through 23 & Me that her parents used a sperm donor to conceive her 50-some years ago. She decides that, despite her parents' pledge to never discuss it, she wants to talk about it all the time. Dee Gish, one of Lisa's newly discovered half sisters, who revels in the large extended family she now gets to claim. Dani Shapiro, a well-known memoir writer who has become a social commentator on genetic revelations, after learning that her beloved father was not biologically related to her. It's one in a long list of secrets that destabilized her life, which now inform the insights she brings to her own podcast on family secrets. Michael Slepian, the social scientist from Columbia University whom we met back in the first episode. As one of the country's premier researchers on secret-keeping, he found out that his own genetic origins were not what he thought. But he says it's not the secret, so much as the secret keeping, that shook him the most. Karen's own father Rex (again), who, in addition to having a secret daughter, never knew his own biological dad. But he told Karen (in the year before he died) he was at peace with that. The Secrets We Keep is written/produced/hosted by Karen Brown, edited by Sam Hudzik, with music by Katie Semro. Find out more at nepm.org/secrets.

The changing political winds around abortion have led so many women to keep their abortions secret, including both those who got illegal abortions before Roe v. Wade, and those who legal abortions afterwards, for reasons to do with shame and social expectations. But since the right to abortion is now in question in many places, those same women are now choosing to speak out — equating secrecy with silence, and openness with defiance. This episode tells intimate stories of women who spent years keeping this chapter in their lives secret — the toll of that secrecy on relationships and self-esteem — and what changed their minds. We meet: Wendy Sibbison, a retired human rights lawyer in Greenfield, Massachusetts, who had an illegal abortion in the 1960s and only spoke about it after joining the women's movement of the '70s. She had a second abortion years later, and approached it much differently. A 50-something woman named Rachel, who had abortions in the 1980s but, despite their legality, felt so ashamed she couldn't talk about it. Until the Dobbs decision turned her into an activist (though she still prefers to keep her last name out of it). And Smith College professor Carrie Baker, who is an expert on feminist and abortion history, including how secrecy has been weaponized by opponents of abortion and women's rights in general. The Secrets We Keep is written/produced/hosted by Karen Brown, edited by Sam Hudzik, with music by Katie Semro. Find out more at nepm.org/secrets.
In this pilot episode, host Karen Brown explores a personal family secret: a sister she didn't know was her father's daughter until they were all in their 20s. By talking to her family members — including her mother, her three sisters (including her half sister), and her late father (before he died in 2017), she tries to understand the shame and stigma involved in keeping a family scandal under wraps, and how that can affect your world view and relationships. She also comes clean about her own long-held feelings about the secret and its implications. We meet Michael Slepian, a professor at Columbia University, who studies the psychology of secret keeping. And, Karen explains her original interest in the potential harms of secrecy, and why, as a journalist, she has always been a fan of radical openness. But, what's the difference between privacy and secrecy? The Secrets We Keep is written/produced/hosted by Karen Brown, edited by Sam Hudzik, with music by Katie Semro. Find out more at nepm.org/secrets.
It's no secret that many people in the LGBTQ community have felt they had to keep their sexual orientation and gender identity hidden for years, partly because of discrimination, and partly because of internalized shame. Dive deep into three stories to understand the true cost of those secrets, psychologically, personally, societally — and the relief when they are revealed. We meet: Margo Anderson, a transgender woman and science writer in western Massachusetts who transitioned in her early 50s, after keeping her identity a secret even from herself. Bill Hudson, a gay man who grew up Catholic and later led a religious school in Minnesota, while hiding his same-sex relationship and children for years — until it all exploded in public. Dr. Abbie Goldberg, a psychology professor at Clark University who grew up in the 1980s with a single mom who was gay but never talked about it. She now researches secrets among LGBTQ and adoptive families. Tanisha Arena and Nicole Young Martin, two queer Black women and community leaders who talk about confronting society's prejudices and refusing to live in secrecy — albeit at a cost. The Secrets We Keep is written/produced/hosted by Karen Brown, edited by Sam Hudzik, with music by Katie Semro. Find out more at nepm.org/secrets.

Karen is the creator behind Just Get It Done Quilts, a name that I love because it is all in the way that you say it :) February 11th, 2018 was the day that Karen opened the doors on her YouTube channel - she uploaded her first video called "hazel nut quilt part 2" and just a few years later, she's managed to attract over 30,000,000 videos views and build a faithful community of almost 400,000 subscribers. In this episode, Karen discusses her creator journey from knowing basically nothing about Instagram or Youtube, to becoming a one of the top online personalities in the quilting niche.
Episode 76: Cindy Gersch & Manifest: 7 Steps to Living Your Best Life by Roxie Nafousi For this conversation, Cindy, an Entrepreneur and Rare Disease Advocate, walks me through how her life changed dramatically when she was diagnosed with Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) in 2018. Cindy shares that she lost almost everything -- her husband, her running, her job, most of her friends -- she felt made her who she was at that point -- her identity. A close brush with death woke her up, though, showing her she could be a healthy person living with a disease instead of an unhealthy person living with a disease. She made that intentional choice and moved forward, doing what she does best -- telling stories. Having studied broadcast journalism and spent years as reporter -- a natural storyteller -- she founded her own company and later became an advocate for those living with FMD. It was through that advocacy path of her journey that she realized her purpose had put her on a stronger path than she might have otherwise experienced had she never gone through her painful health challenges. Tough days, tough experiences -- how do they change us and what do we get out of them? Everything happens for a reason. It's up to us to explore and understand what that reason may be, no matter how painful, no matter how ugly those experiences are. Purpose has almost become cliché, brought up so often that with each mention it loses some meaning. I recently had a conversation with college business students, sharing with them that they would know when they met theirs. That it's not the same path for everyone -- but they would know it. And that it fell on them, if they wanted to find it, to stay curious and hungry enough to keep exploring. Don't underestimate the power of purpose, that insatiable personal fire, fuel, and driver. Cindy herself here shares how much more she gets out of life now that she has that purpose that fires her up. Conversation Highlights Even though things may feel as down as they can be, there is always a silver lining. The value of having the 1 dime (true friend) vs. 10 pennies (friends who might not come through) We don't give ourselves enough love. What would the letters you would write to your younger self say? The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Cindy is, In life, especially in those moments where you feel lost, how are you intentionally designing your path forward? For us, one of the most important aspects of the equipment we own is the ability to get help…” – Mike Brown. “I think what makes our dynamic work very well is that we don't have any predefined roles. What makes the dynamic successful is that at no point in this relationship have we ever said, ‘Yeah, I'm not doing that.'” – Mike Brown.
