Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 14 minutesSynopsis: This morning (12/13/24), in our tefilah-focused Machshavah Lab series for women, we attempted to understand the Rambam's view, as expressed in a pair of seemingly contradictory halachos. We learned through two commentaries on the Rambam who offered explanations: the Kesef Mishneh and the Yad Peshuta. Believe me, I didn't intend for these to be highly technical halachic shiurim (which is usually the type of thing I'd reserve for my Rambam Bekius podcast, not my Machshavah Lab shiurim), but alas - that's where we ended up. The good news is that we emerged with a clearer understanding of WHAT the Rambam holds. Next time, we'll delve into WHY the Rambam takes such a conservative stance when it comes to making change in the received nusach. Please feel free to leave your questions, insights, and feedback in the comments! 465-----This week's Torah content has been generously sponsored by Ann, a dedicated supporter of the Rabbi Schneeweiss Torah Content Fund. Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 13 minutesSynopsis: This morning (12/6/24), in our tefilah-focused Machshavah Lab series for women, we continued our exploration of the nusach ha'tefilah. After reviewing what we covered in Part 1, we busted what I call "The Big Nusach Myth" about "the original nusach" and how all the nuschaos we have today came about. We examined sources from Geonim, Rishonim, Acharonim, and academics. This insight led to a number of questions (and maybe a few cans of worms) which, בג"ה, we'll examine in the upcoming installments.-----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות תפלה וברכת כהנים פרק אשם הלכות קריאת שמע א:זשם א:ה-וDaniel Sperber - On Changes in Jewish LiturgyY. Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 46 minutesSynopsis: This morning (11/8/24), in our tefilah-focused Machshavah Lab series for women, we began a new topic: the nusach ha'tefilah (liturgy). We began by reviewing the relevant facts: what the mitzvah of tefilah from the Torah entailed, how Ezra and his Beis Din changed it, and the historical reasons why. I then presented my understanding of the REAL reasons why tefilah desperately needed this change, which I supported by drawing upon Rav Hirsch's commentary on Migdal Bavel. We didn't have time to start the major question I had hoped to get to, which is: If Ezra and his Beis Din instituted a standardized nusach, then what is the origin of the wide variety of nuschaos we have today?-----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות תפלה וברכת כהנים א:דמעשה רקח שםמלבי"ם - נחמיה יג:כדרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות קריאת שמע א:זרמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר אהבה, הלכות ברכות א:ה-ורש"ר הירש - בראשית יא:ז-----This week's Torah content has been sponsored by Yael Weiss. In this shiur we learn about the blessing for health, and we study the effects of Rabbinic attempts to safeguard the Nusach of Tefilah.
For study, consult elder chasidim. Generally, start Tanya with volumes 3, 2, and then 1. Also, study from Derech Mitzvosecha. Approach study with Naseh Venishma: study and understanding will come in time, even if it seems difficult at first. The Yetzer Hara nowadays especially tries to stop people from learning Chassidus. https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/igroskodesh/011/009/3569
