First of all, Happy New Year! Let us hope for a healthy 2025 and success in our personal and business lives. Today you will meet Rabbi Yossi Jacobson who, thirty years ago, was sent from Brooklyn to Iowa. How that happened, what business he started, a bit about Chanukah and those 613 Commandments are all in this conversation. His business Maccabee's Glatt Kosher Deli is the only one of its kind in the State of Iowa. How did Yossi get here from Brooklyn, why a deli, how it got its name and more. Oh, Happy Chanukah as well. Happy Chanukah to all our DMC listeners! Chanukah is all about miracles, and the Jewish people have witnessed miracles of biblical proportions this year. These open miracles have reminded us that Hashem is in control and will never break his promise to the Jewish people or Israel. Celebrated Israeli journalist and Torah educator Sivan Rahav Meir joins us on the podcast to share what she thinks is the greatest miracle of all from the war. In this episode, we discuss: How Sivan got into Israeli TV and journalism Her experience as a religious women in Israeli journalism How Sivan's work has changed since October 7th The miracles Sivan has witnessed in her coverage of the war The real miracle of the war How we can see more miracles in our lives Sivan's website: https://sivanrahavmeir.com/home-en/ To Be a Jew booklet: https://sivanrahavmeir.com/to-be-a-jew/ We love hearing from our listeners. The star of this week's Torah portion of Miketz is Joseph, who goes from being a prisoner in jail, to being the most powerful man in Egypt...on account of other people's dreams. Yosef's interpretation and advice is based on the wisdom of Divine inspiration, and his sterling character is synonymous with purity and righteousness. So why didn't his own brothers recognize him? And why did Joseph arrange such elaborate theatre, confusing and confounding his brothers? Jim Long and Rabbi Chaim Richman focus on the enigmatic Joseph in this week's Jerusalem Lights podcast, sharing more amazing insights from the sages as well as archeological/historic evidence that testifies to Joseph in history. A blast from the past. Recorded 2 years ago in 5782 (or 2021 for all you assimilationists) as part of our podcast's first iteration, 2 Queers 4 Questions (which, is that still what we're called? I dunno it's blurry and we don't care). We both recently listened and were struck by some of the stuff in here, questions and texts that go very deep to the meanings and possibilities of this holiday. So we wanted to share the conversation once again. Happy Chanukah, honey. Our questions are: 1. Who is the enemy and how do we fight them/it? 2. What ruins is it time for us to rededicate? 3. Which miracle? / Where do we want to look for our miracles? 4. What darkness are we hoping to light? / What do we do with darkness, what do we do with light?

Merry Christmas! Happy Chanukah! Happy Kwanza! In this episode we celebrate the Holiday season and talk to Jack from the Anne Ellen Christmas Tree Farm and Village. Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah! This week we are bringing good tidings and cheer (very unusual for us). We start with Anne's list of the 12 Muldoon movies that should be on your list this season (it's not without controversy). Then we discuss the baker in the UK who's doing his part to help bring joy to his community, a dog named Van Gogh who's living up to his name and a Grinch who's not where he's supposed to be. And we finish our Christmas movie marathon with Queen Latifah in "Last Holiday". This 2006 film definitely flew under the radar but could not be more delightful. As Anne would say, "It's got Latifah, LL Cool J, Gerard Depardieu - what more could you want?" Good question. Get INTUIT with Gila- a podcast about Intuitive Eating and Personal Growth.
Today, I am going solo to explore how will power can fit into Intuitive Eating. You are gonna have to give it a listen to hear the story I unpack here and understand how it can fit in. So many people struggle with that concept and I think this may be something helpful for you to hear! WAHOO! I am recruiting for my upcoming 3 month group counseling, beginning of January. Here are the objectives: Objectives: Learn and implement the 10 principles of Intuitive Eating Unpack our own diet culture Understand our own hunger/fullness cues through the Hunger/Fullness scale Learn the fundamentals of physical and emotional self care Identify our own food police and develop other coping skills to deal with our emotions Incorporate gentle nutrition and joyful movement into your daily living through foods and exercises that satisfy you physically and emotionally Learn to appreciate and respect your body not just for how it looks but for how it serves you. Reach a point of feeling peace around food and feeling satisfaction from your food. Here are some testimonials from past participants. "I participated in Gila Glassberg's Food Freedom course. Gila did a wonderful job explaining the 10 principles of IE. The course was informative and provided me with many tools to use at my own pace when I feel I'm ready to move from one principal to the next. During the course I was able to get support from the other participants and give support when needed. It felt so good to know that my struggles are not unique. I learned how to have compassion for myself because that is what I was giving to the other participants. Gila was available to address concerns we had as a group and personal issues we were each struggling with at the time. I highly recommend working with Gila or taking a course with her. She helps you understand the steps towards finding food freedom while also focusing on you as a whole person." "I genuinely enjoyed Gila's intuitive eating workshop. I have struggled with accepting my weight and parts of myself throughout my life and thought that joining this workshop would help me work on accepting my body and making peace with food. I am so happy and proud to say that this workshop has provided me with everything I hoped and more. This deep and transformative experience has helped me make peace with food and my eating habits, accept myself, and be compassionate to myself. I am so excited to continue using all the tools, methods and handouts Gila gave me to continue my journey on intuitive eating, self-acceptance and self-compassion." "I learnt so much from working with Gila and attending Gila's course. From listening to my bodies cues, processing emotions, and using tools to avoid bingeing. I'm still on my journey to learn how to eat the right way for my body and I feel Gila is helping me get there. Thank you Gila for your warmth, dedication, and understanding." "The Intuitive Eating group with Gila Glassberg was a gift of an experience. Being able to talk with other women who are sharing the same struggles with diet culture and maintaining a healthy outlook on body image and nutrition was very liberating. The materials are extremely informative and Gila is extremely knowledgeable and able to lead the group with structure and at the same time give space for each group member to feel heard and validated. I would recommend this group to anyone who is ready to begin healing their relationship with food and working through the murky waters of diet culture." Happy Chanukah! If you don't know, Chanukah is an 8-day holiday in which Jews around the world celebrate the miracle of chocolate-covered gold coins.During this episode, Yael Jew-splains the holiday to a mortified Chaya Leah, who issues one or two corrections. We talk about playing sports in the nude (it's a Greek thing, you wouldn't understand), Christmas envy, and holidays blues. Chaya Leah wonders how Yael doesn't fall into deep depression over the holidays, and maybe vice versa. We talk about reality vs. expectations when it comes to holiday cheer and introduce a new segment: Things That Aren't The Holocaust. This week in TTATH: "The great Twitter massacre of 2022". Every day, we thank Hashem that Elon Musk isn't Jewish. Could you imagine??Also, do you know what Chaya Leah's grandparents got for Chanukah in Auschwitz?? Nothing, that's what! So stop complaining.Feeling blah? Hate the holidays? Love us? In this episode, the Rabbis Rubenstein, debate the meaning of the holiday of Chanukah. They work together to isolate the different meanings of the holiday and talk about the holiday means to them. They discuss the battles of the Maccabees against the Syrian Greeks and Hellenized Jews and if they would have found Modern Jews who were also proud Americans to be distasteful. Are We Alone? This episode touches us in deep ways and explores the theme of what it means to be a small but mighty nation. A nation where none of us is ever alone. Laura Melnicoff, a professional cellist, starts off the episodes not only by playing her beautiful rendition of HaNeiros Hallalu but also by speaking to us candidly about what it means to play music professionally.Tzivia Pizem, Shlucha in Sderot, Israel, speaks about the terror, the trauma, and surprisingly, the support she receives living amidst a barrage of rockets. Her story is uplifting and has all the makings of a modern-day Chanuka story. Riv Eilfort, Jewish singer, songwriter, and performer tells us about her journey as a performer and shares the background to two of her gorgeous songs (as well as the songs themselves!)This episode is a treat; enjoy it as your fry Latkes or prep your house for a Chanukah party...and remember that as you listen to our Chanukah episode, there are thousands of others doing the same, connecting you together.Happy Chanukah!Love, Rivky & SaraSupport the show
