In this shiur, delivered in Tomer Devorah, Rav Burg explains how the story of Yaakov battling the Malach of Eisav reveals the psychology of true transformation.
Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with host Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with Dr. Gilad Malach, a research fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute. Malach's research focuses on public policy related to Israel's ultra-Orthodox community, including issues critical to its integration into Israel's economy and society. This week, the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee is debating a new bill aimed at regulating Haredi draft exemptions. Starting with the foundation of the state in 1948, Malach takes us through the evolution of the ultra-Orthodox community's refusal to serve in the IDF. We hear of previous efforts to entice the population to join the army and how badly they failed. Malach takes us through the unique make-up of the ultra-Orthodox household, in which women generally are more educated and go out to work, while men form a "community of learners." As this new legislation is being debated, we learn what is at stake for the community, as well as the frustrations from the majority of Israelis who are shouldering the national burden. And so this week, we ask Dr. Gilad Malach, what matters now. What Matters Now podcasts are available for download on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. After reviewing what we covered last time in 97 and the ideas we developed in 96, we focused in on the central problems, all of which were in the last three pesukim. Turns out, they held the key for unlocking the entire thing. I don't know about you, but whenever I've read this one in the past, it's kinda felt more or less like a repetition of the previous one. Well, NOT ANYMORE! Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
Each morning before Baruch She'amar, the congregation stands and the Hazan declares, "Hashem Melech, Hashem Malach, Hashem Yimloch Le'olam Va'ed" – "Hashem is King, Hashem was King, Hashem will be King for all eternity." The congregation then repeats this proclamation after the Hazan. Our custom is to make this proclamation twice. There is an opinion that a Minyan is required for pronouncing "Hashem Melech," but the accepted view is that this may be said even without a Minyan, and so if ten men have yet to arrive by this point, "Hashem Melech" may nevertheless be recited. Some communities have the practice that a child leads the congregation in reciting "Hashem Melech." It would seem, however, that it is more proper to choose someone who is at least Bar-Misva age to lead this proclamation. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) brings a custom to lift one's feet when reciting "Hashem Melech," like we do when reciting "Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh." This symbolizes the "elevation" that we experience through this recitation, as we make our way toward the higher realms until we reach the highest level in the heavens so we can recite the Amida directly in Hashem's presence. One who follows this custom must ensure to do so in a discreet, unassuming manner, and not in a way that draws attention to himself. The Arizal (Rav Yishak Luria, Safed, 1534-1572) taught that the pronouncement of "Hashem Melech" is associated with our quest to neutralize the 280 "Kelipot," or negative energies, that threaten us. These 280 forces are alluded to in the names of the five letters of the Hebrew alphabet that are changed when they appear at the end of a word: Mem, Nun, Sadi, Peh, Kaf (represented by the acrostic "Mansapach"). The combined numerical value of these letters is 280. When we succeed in "subjugating" these 280 forces, the Arizal taught, Mashiah will come. In the proclamation of "Hashem Melech," the words "Melech" and "Malach" both have the Gematria of 90, and the word "Yimloch" equals 100 – for a total of 280, thus alluding to the "Kelipot." The Name of "Havaya" is mentioned three times in this proclamation ("Hashem Melech, Hashem Malach, Hashem Yimloch"), and in Gematria it equals 26, for a total of 78 (26 * 3). Adding this to 280, we arrive at a total of 358 – the Gematria of "Mashiah" (40+300+10+8). This daily proclamation, then, is a crucial part of our effort to overcome the harmful spiritual forces in the world so that we will become worthy of the arrival of Mashiah.
What Happens To The Malach?
August 28, 1920. In the town of Tequila, fireworks burst overhead as people celebrate Mexico's independence. Then… gunshots. Malachías Cuervo, heir to the famous tequila dynasty, has just reignited a bitter feud with his family's rivals, the Sauzas. For decades, his brother José Cuervo fought to rebuild the family business through drought, revolution, and political upheaval—turning a struggling operation into an empire. His tactfulness allowed Cuervo to survive as one of the most popular tequila brands in the world today. How is José Cuervo able to navigate the Mexican Revolution, and a cutthroat industry? And what does his life reveal about the history of his country? Special thanks to Ted Genoways, author of Tequila Wars: José Cuervo and the Bloody Struggle for the Spirit of Mexico. Angels don't have free will—so whats so impressive about a "robot" doing Hashem's bidding?
Hi,Why did Hashem make a donkey talk to Bilaam, what could it accomplish that the Malach couldn't? Why doesn't the only talking donkey in history have more inspiring words to say? What was the miracle coming to teach us?Have a wonderful Shabbos
Welcome to Daily Bitachon. We continue in our special mini series with messages based on the situation that's going on in Eretz Yisrael, now with the threat from Iran. In the Haftara of Parashat Baha'alotcha , which was read on the first Shabbat of this war, Zechariah sees a vision of a Menorah and the angel asks him, Do you know what this is? He says, I don't know, what is it? The angel tells him, This is a message to Zerubavel telling him, לא בחיל, not with not with armies, לא בכח, not with strength, כי אם ברוח י, it's My spirit אמר ה' צבאות. We're going to win this with spirit. מי אתה הר הגדול? Who do you think you are, big mountain, לפני זרובבל, in front of Zerubavel. ל מישור, I'm going to smooth you out . What exactly is this message of כי אם ברוחי/ It's going to happen with My spirit? The commentaries on the Navi point us to a pasuk at the beginning of Ezra (1:1), where it talks about building the Bet Hamikdash: ובשנת אחת לכורש מלך פרס/ In the first year of Koresh , the Persian king. There were many Persian kings, but Koresh was the one that built our Bet Hamikdash העיר ה' את רוח כורש מלך פרס/ God aroused the spirit of King Koresh of Paras. ויעבר קול בכל מלכותו /And he made an announcement to all of his kingdom, and he wrote a letter and said, everybody please help build the Bet Hamikdash What are the words that are used ? העיר ה' את רוח כורש/God aroused his spiri t. The commentaries tell us, this is what Hashem meant with when he said to Zerubavel, We're going to win this war with My spirit- You're not going to have to fight anything. I'm just going to flick a switch and Koresh is going to decide to send out workers to accommodate the building of the Bet Hamikdash… And that's what happened. And that large mountain referred to above, that was blocking Zerubavel? That mountain also refers to the Persians. As it says in Ezra chapter 4, At the beginning of the kingdom of Achashverosh, , כתבו שטנה. They wrote words of prosecution. What were those words of prosecution? Stop building the Bet Hamikdash.. and the building of the Bet Hamikdash was impeded by Achashverosh. That's how we know he wasn't the best of people. Rav Saada HaGaon says there that if we continue reading onto the next pasuk, we see that the one writing these words of prosecution w as Shimsheh, the scribe. Who was this scribe Shimsheh? He was the son of Haman. The Gemara in Masechet Megila 16A, discusses the night Achashverosh woke up in the middle of the night, disturbed. Hashem aroused him, and he woke up disturbed. Why hadn't he paid back Mordechai? So he took out the Divreh HaYamim . Who was in charge of the book? None other than this same scribe, Shimsheh! Shimsheh was busy erasing the words We have to pay back Mordechai, but while he was doing so, Gavriel the Malach was filling it in. The Maharsha says this, again, was Haman's son! So Hashem is showing us that There can be all kinds of the negative forces and anti-semitism, but I will wake up the king in the middle of the night. I will send Gavriel in. I fight wars with spirit, not with regular tactics . And that is all we need. This Bet Hamikdash will be built very simply. It's not that complicated. Just a flick of the switch. And the very same Persians that stopped it then decided to build it. It's a flip of a switch. And Paras is Iran…. Similarly we now have the chancellor of Germany praising Israel for doing the world's dirty work! What's going on? It's just a flick of a switch. We have to believe that it's that simple for Hashem to turn things around. He doesn't need anything . כי אם ברוחי. Of course we do our physical Hishtadlut (and we'll soon get to spiritual Hishtadlut ). But at the end of the day, it's all כי אם ברוחי/ Hashem is in charge of spirits. That's a term used on God. So let's believe that with the flick of a switch, everything can change.

If you've ever been curious about what goes into designing a great golf course—this episode is for you.
The Torah in Shemos 24:6 describes Moshe putting half of the blood of the korbanos on the mizbeach and the other half on the people. Rashi is bothered: Who split the blood??? He answers that a malach came and split it. This episode analyzes why there's any need for a malach to do something as mundane as splitting the blood. In doing so, we discuss ideas about a covenant between Hashem and man.
In the latest episode of Bible Backdrop, we continue our series on the History of Israel looking at Moses' return to Egypt. What events led him there? How did he respond to God's calling? Did God really almost kill him? After 40 years of living in the wilderness and tending his father in law's sheep, Moses is called by God to talk to Pharaoh to let Israel go. Moses is beaten down, uncertain and tries to back out. God is having none of it and Moses is compelled to go. But...he won't do it alone. Listen to this latest episode of Bible Backdrop to hear the whole story.

“Well-behaved women seldom make history.” Well, that is the embodiment of Imelda Marcos, the former First Lady of the Philippines, and Marie Antoinette, the last Queen of France before the French Revolution. You probably know these women's stories, so you may not see it at first, but these women share a common narrative of luxury, influence, and eventual downfall. While they lived in different times and countries, their lives existed in a strangely coincidental parallel. Today on Found Objects, we will look at the lives and legacies of these powerful women in history and examine just how much their stories overlap. The Midrash in Bereshit Raba tells us when Hashem divided the Lower Waters from the Upper Waters, the Lower Waters began to cry. They said, “Woe unto us that we are not zocheh to be close to our Creator.” Hashem told them that because they had such a yearning to be close to Him, they were going to be used for two special mitzvot in the future, both performed on the mizbe'ach. The nisuch hamayim on Sukkot and the salt used for every korban. The question was asked, who got the better deal, the Upper Waters or the Lower Waters? We say every day in the tefila in Yotzer Ohr that Hashem has angels standing in the heights of the universe who proclaim loudly, in unison, words of the Living G-d. They are all beloved, pure, powerful and holy. They all carry out the will of Hashem with awe and reverence. They open their mouths with holiness, purity, song and music and they bless, praise and glorify the great Name of Hashem. Then they accept upon themselves the yoke of the Heavenly Kingdom from one another and they give consent to each other and then they say with awe, Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, Hashem tzivakot, melo chol ha'aretz kevodo. And then the Ofanim and Chayot HaKodesh angels soar with a thunderous sound in response to the Serafim angels and they give praise by saying, Baruch kevod Hashem mimekomo. Imagine that scene in Shamayim with tens of thousands of angels. And yet, every one of those angels would give up what they do to have the merit to come down to this world for one moment to do one easy mitzvah. Because they know how much one mitzvah down here accomplishes in Heaven. Much more than they could ever accomplish. In fact, when a Jew opens his mouth down here to praise Hashem, there is an angel in Shamayim who silences all of the other angels, because one word of praise from us is worth more to Hashem than all of the praises of all of the angels combined. It is true that they are closer to Hashem now, but by us doing mitzvot in this world, we can become closer to Hashem for all eternity. And so, for sure, the Lower Waters got the better end of the deal, as they were able to be used in the performance of mitzvot here in this world. The value of even one good deed in this world is beyond our comprehension. Rav Yosef Karo, the author of the Shulchan Aruch, wrote a sefer called Maggid Yesharim, which is a compilation of everything he learned from the angel who used to come and visit him. He wrote there that on one Simchat Torah, he was so sick he couldn't get out of his bed and he missed the hakafot. The next morning, the Malach came to him and said “the Atika d'Atikin, The Ancient of the Ancient, which is a reference to Hashem, found a zechut for you. And in the merit of that zechut, He is allowing you to keep your neshama.” The zechut was that one time a Jew was taken into custody by a foreign government and they were causing him a lot of distress. Maran, Rav Yosef Karo, was able to intercede by writing a letter which saved that man. And for that act, Hashem was saving him. He wrote, he woke up that morning completely healthy as if nothing happened, although just hours before he was deathly ill. Every deed we do is so precious. And if a person is going through a difficulty and it is so hard for him to be happy, but yet he continues doing the mitzvot, those mitzvot become infinitely greater and the zechuyot that they produce are endless. We should value every opportunity we have to do any mitzvah in this world.
The slide into spiritual disintegration doesn't happen overnight. It's a steady slide over time. Have you ever wondered how the priests and teachers of the law got so far off spiritually that they couldn't even see their Messiah, the Son of God, when He was standing right there in front of them? The spiritual decay of the priesthood went back centuries. Even as far back as the Book of Malachi, over 400 years before Jesus, the spiritual rot was already deep and widespread. And so, God had sent prophet after prophet to call them back to repentance, only to be ignored time and time again. So now, in His mercy, God sends Malachi to give them one final warning with language designed to shock them and call them back from the edge of spiritual decay and disaster. This sermon looks at the second half of the second dispute in the book of Malachi. It divides the discourse neatly into three sections: 1) The Curse The priests are in danger of losing their ministry. If they don't course correct, all the blessings they enjoy in ministry will be taken away, just like the offal that's taken away outside the city and cursed in the fire. Because there is nothing in their worship that is pleasing to the Lord. 2) The Covenant The priests have corrupted the essence of their calling. They neglected their walk with God. They distorted the teaching of the Word. They are calloused in their prayers of intercession. They corrupted the sacrificial offerings. The very heart of their priestly ministry was compromised. And now, like a prosecuting attorney, God will bring the charge. 3) The Charge The priests have led the people astray with platitudes. They told people what they wanted to hear, and in so doing, feared people more than they feared God. The priests thought they were being loving by sparing people's feelings with their sugar-coated half-truths. But it only led them away from God's life and peace, and there's ultimately nothing loving about that. And so, God said that He would make the priests despised and abased before all the people of Israel. Takeaway: We need the truth, the whole truth, and nothing by the truth…so help us God! The truth is, we owe God everything. He made us. He gave us life, breath, and everything else. We owe our all to Him. But we have failed to worship Him as we ought. We all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. We've all failed to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. We've all failed to love our neighbor as ourselves. But God, in his great mercy, sent his Son Jesus. The bad news of our sin makes way for the good news of our salvation! Tough love gives us the bad news we'd prefer to ignore. Tender mercies give us the good news we find it hard to believe! Malach 2:1–9
In this short shiur, delivered at the grand banquet of Mevaseret, Rav Burg addresses the Talmidim for the final time of the year. In this shiur he defines the difference between a Malach who is an Omed and a human being who is a Mehaleich. An Omed can be defined by his fall but a human being who is in process can never be defined by what he does.
Shiur given by Rabbi Bezalel Rudinsky on Parshas Acharei Mos-Kedoshim. Shiur recorded in Yeshivas Ohr Reuven, Monsey, NY.

The Midrash in Bereshit Raba tells us when Hashem divided the Lower Waters from the Upper Waters, the Lower Waters began to cry. They said, “Woe unto us that we are not zocheh to be close to our Creator.” Hashem told them that because they had such a yearning to be close to Him, they were going to be used for two special mitzvot in the future, both performed on the mizbe'ach . The nisuch hamayim on Sukkot and the salt used for every korban . Rav Yosef Karo, the author of the Shulchan Aruch , wrote a sefer called Maggid Yesharim , which is a compilation of everything he learned from the angel who used to come and visit him. He wrote there that on one Simchat Torah, he was so sick he couldn't get out of his bed and he missed the hakafot . The next morning, the Malach came to him and said “the Atika d'Atikin , The Ancient of the Ancient, which is a reference to Hashem, found a zechut for you. And in the merit of that zechut , He is allowing you to keep your neshama .” The zechut was that one time a Jew was taken into custody by a foreign government and they were causing him a lot of distress.
