Welcome to Daily Bitachon . We continue with the next unit in the Haggadah . במתי מעת Bimtei Me'at/In a little bit of Meteh What does Meteh mean? One year we were doing the Haggadah shel Pesach and I asked, what is Meteh ? No one around the table knew. The truth is, I didn't know either. So we stopped right there and opened up a Chumash . Rashi said bimtei me'at bishivim nefesh , with 70 souls. But that doesn't translate what metei me'at means. So we looked at the Targum , our next choice after Rashi , and it said be'am ze'ir , a small nation. So metei is being defined as nation . The Metzudot David in Shoftim 20:48 says, metim- hu shem le'enoshut / Metim means humanity , or people like anshei . The Ibn Ezra says the word Meteh , anytime you have a tzere yud , it means the "plural of". For example, שער Shaar is a gate. שערי Shaare is the gates of . It's a plural possessive. So the word Meteh means a small amount of many people. That's a little strange term. Furthermore, the Ibn Ezra says the word מת never shows up in singular form. He sends us back to Devarim 2,34 where it says we overtook the nations of Sichon and it says we took over the whole city, metim . Which means anashim , but again, in plural. So it's a term for humanity in the plural sense. So a small amount of humanity. That's a strange term. The Jewish people went down in a small amount of humanity, and as Rashi says bishivim nefesh, they went down with 70 souls. Rav Dessler, in volume 3 page 211 explains that certain numbers are significant. The number 70 has a significance. There are 70 nations in the world, broken down into 35 nations under Esav , which we'll call Western civilization , and 35 nations under Yishmael , which we call that the Arab world. Those are the 70 nations. It's not a coincidene. The number seven is a completion, like the seven days of the week. And 10 is also a full gamut. So 70 is a completeness. 70 years is a full life. So the number 70 is not a coincidental number. When the Jewish people, hit the number 70, they were a metim . They were a small humanity, a small nation . Those 70 people had inside of them the 70 forces that corresponded to all the 70 nations. This shows us that Hashem is setting us up for greatness and every detail is measured. It says in Bereishit 46:27, kol hanefesh le'beit Yaakov haba'ah Mitzrayimah shivim / All the souls that came down were 70. The commentaries point out from the Midrash Rabbah 94:9 that if you count, there weren't actually 70. Some say Yocheved was born as they were coming in (She was the mother of Moshe Rabbenu, and God was sending the refuah before the Makkah ), others say it was Serach bat Asher . Still others say it was Hakadosh Baruch Hu who ended up being the 70th one. In Ha'azinu 32:8, it says be'anchel Elyon goyim / when Hashem started to give the inheritance to the nations, be'hafrido bnei Adam, when he separated them by the Dor Haflagah into 70 nations ( that's when the 70 nations happened). It says there lemispar Bnei Yisrael . The 70 nations corresponded to the 70 Jews that went down to Mitzrayim . So God was working out 70 corresponding to the 70. Rabbeinu Bachya on that pasuk lemispar Bnei Yisrael adds that the 12 tribes correspond to the 12 months and the 12 mazalot . We're above the stars, and we're above the mazal . Getting back to our Haggadah and Bimtei me'at , we're thanking Hashem that we came into Mitzrayim not just as 39 people, or 28 people, or a random 83 people. No. It was a bimtei me'at . It was small, but it was a force of humanity of 70 . As we say, bishivim nefesh yardu avotecha Mitzrayimah / 70 souls went down . And it says Ve'ata hena samcha Hashem Elokecha ke'kochvei hashamayim larov / We're like the stars in number- referring to when they got into the desert- there were 600,000 people. So we went from 70 to 600,000! And the number 600,000 is also not a random number. The Gemara in Masechet Berachot 58a says that when you see 600,000 people, there's a special bracha called Baruch Chacham Harazim . Blessed is God, Who has the wisdom of the secrets that He knows all the secrets of these 600,000 people . That means 600,000 includes all the personality types that exist in the world. Although we can have more than 600,000, those are offshoots of the basic 600,000 personalities and types of people that exist in the world. All of the energies of humanity are in 600,000. So we went from the 3 Avot ,which correspond to the three main traits the world stands on, to 70 children of Yaakov that correspond to the 70 nations, which includes all of the United Nations- every possible country type, German, France, every country type is rooted in the Jewish people. And then we go on to the 600,000 personalities. So the Jewish people are perfectly worked in to the entire makeup of the world. This is all part of the hashgacha of Hashem Every person makes a difference. The Gemara in Masechet Bava Kamma discusses one reason one should never have a dog. It says imagine if there were 600,000 people standing ready for the Shechinah to come down, and one dog barks and causes a miscarriage. Now the Shechinah won't come down in that way that it comes down only on 600,000 people. Every individual adds something. That's the uniqueness and the perfect planning that Hakadosh Baruch Hu is doing as He brings the Jewish people down into Egypt and eventually takes them out of Egypt and continues to watch each and every one of us.

In the mid second century BCE, the people of Judea did the impossible… the ended centuries of foreign rule by expelling the Seleucids and reviving the divine Judean kingship. To celebrate their victory, they wrote stories which pretended to predict this achievement and cast a legendary hero from Canaanite mythology as their prophet. The result included angels, foreign gods, dragon-slaying, and great beasts that would reappear in Revelation.

Welcome to daily. We're now in Tehilim 21,8 כִּֽי־הַ֭מֶּלֶךְ בֹּטֵ֣חַ בַּיהֹוָ֑ה וּבְחֶ֥סֶד עֶ֝לְי֗וֹן בַּל־יִמּֽוֹט׃ For the King trusts in Hashem and the kindness of the Most High, (referring to Hashem) that he will not falter. Rabbenu Bachye in Bamidbar 22, 2 discusses the concept of a Jewish king and says that originally Hashem did not want there to be a Jewish king because the people rely on the king and the king relies on the people. It's reciprocal. The king wants to have a large nation army and he's relying on them and they're ultimately relying on him. But we, the Jewish people are supposed to rely directly on Hashem. The Torah forbade reliance on human beings. Hashem wants each of us to individually rely on Hashem. When we have that, we shouldn't need to have any one man to rely on. Even more than that, every individual will be more guaranteed than the king. Since Hashem knew that in the future the people would become weak, he set up a system for a king, but it's really not ideal and that's why Hashem wasn't happy with it. David Hamelech is different though. As our pasuk says, this King trusts Hashem. This king, says the Radak is different than other kings. He does not rely on the masses of people. He relies on hesed Elyon/ the kindness of the One that's the highest. The system of bitachon is like a pyramid. The guy below relies on the guy above, and above and above and that's why the whole world relies on the king. The king has no one above him, so he has to rely on the people at large, who are above him in a way, because ultimately, they can overthrow the king. But David Hamelech realizes that there's something above him. That's why in this case we call it the Hesed Elyon , the kindness of the Highest One . Because the king has no one above him but David Hamelech looks even higher and sees Hashem, who is the One that can control everything, regardless of his abilities. That's why the pasuk ends off with Bal Yimot. David Hamelech knows he'll never falter because he's relying on the hesed of Hashem, which also never falls. The Chatam Sofer in Bamidbar 9 ,23 says that of course David Hamelech relied on Hashem when he was small, when he was taking on Goliat. The hiddush is that after he became king, he didn't rely on his armies or his wealth, only on Hashem, unlike some people who only rely on Hashem when they're down. The sefer Tiferet Shlomo, in his Likutim on Shmuel , adds a further point. He says, as we just mentioned, the poor man has no choice but rely on the wealthy to rely on Hashem and not on his wealth, because he has no wealth. The king that could rely on his wealth and still relies on Hashem is a great Sidkut , and that's David Hamelech, who had all the wealth in the world and yet relied on Hashem. He cites the Zohar, that quotes from Rav Hamnuna Saba who would pray before he ate, even though he had a full table of food. It's brought down that everyone should do that-pray for their food every single day. Now the question is, what do you mean pray for my food? The food's on the table, I'm about to eat the food. There are people who say, Mizmor L'David, Hashem Ro'ee Lo Echsar before they eat because in that we have the pasuk (23,5) תַּעֲרֹ֬ךְ לְפָנַ֨י ׀ שֻׁלְחָ֗ן Hashem sets my table… What does that mean? Don't I set the table? That's exactly the point here- to realize that even when you have it, it's Hesed Elyon- in a split second, it can disappear. This is really a big hiddush. When we have our health and our wealth and our happiness and our family and the shidduch, and we're sitting in our houses, the mortgages arepaid off, everything's fine, our family is around us, the Pesach bills have been paid…. And I say, I have to rely on Hashem for what I have this second because, as we say, Hashem is pumping energy into everything every single second. There's nothing that's just here, it's here because it's Hashem's want that we should have it right now. And that's what David Hamelech understands. That's the greatness of David Hamelech. He's the king. And he relies on Hesed Elyon. And that's the only reason why bal yimot/he won't falter . We don't stress this enough. When I have the food, I have the car, I have the house, I have it all, what guarantees Bal Yimot ? What guarantees it will not falter ? That's why I need bitachon, even when I have everything. Because I don't really have anything- I need the constant Hesed Elyon. There are so many important pesukim, and that's why we're trying to review them. For those of you that haven't been following us for the past few years, we started with the list of Pesukei Bitachon of Rav Yosef Zundel of Salant, who also lists this pasuk, but stressed a different point- El Elyon, Gomel Hasadim Tovim . If you want a refresher on that, you can take a look at the book Daily Dose of Bitachon of Pesukim of Bitachon. Now we're on the Maharal's list. He also lists this pasuk , but with the Bal Yimot twist. There are endless beautiful thoughts to appreciate in any pasuk. The Melech, the king is Bote'ach b'Hessed Elyon. He's got it all, but he still knows I need Hesed Elyon. Otherwise I might falter. Finally, the word Elyon means above and the root of the word Yimot is Mat , which is go down. So we can either be above or below . We could be on the top or the bottom of the Ferris wheel, but even if you're all the way up on the top, you could still hit the bottom. That's the nature of the Ferris wheel. But again, David Hamelech is Bote'ach B'Hashem. Have a wonderful day.

When Purim falls on Mosa'eh Shabbat (as it does this year), we recite Arbit at the end of Shabbat as usual, with "Shuba," "Viyhi Noam" and "Yosheb Be'seter Elyon." After "Yosheb Be'seter," however, rather than proceeding with "Ve'Ata Kadosh," we recite the Beracha of "Boreh Me'oreh Ha'esh" over a flame. We may not derive benefit from light on Mosa'eh Shabbat until we recite the Beracha over a flame, and we must therefore recite this Beracha before reading the Megila. After reciting the Beracha over the flame, we read the Megila and complete the Tefila, and then recite the rest of Habdala. Of course, the Beracha over the flame is omitted, since it had already been recited before the Megila reading. If a woman was not present in the synagogue for Habdala, and her husband – who had heard Habdala in the synagogue – thus recites Habdala for her at home, she should preferably recite the Beracha over the flame herself, rather than have her husband recite the Beracha for her. This is the ruling of Hacham Ovadia Yosef. However, if she is unable to recite the Beracha herself, then the husband may recite the Beracha for her. If a congregation forgot to recite the Beracha over a flame before the Megila reading, and they realized their mistake during the reading, they should interrupt the reading in between two paragraphs of the Megila to light a candle, and the Hazan then recites the Beracha. Of course, if they realized their mistake only after the completion of the reading, then they simply include "Boreh Me'oreh Ha'esh" in the recitation of Habdala after the reading. Summary: When Purim falls on Mosa'eh Shabbat, the Hazan in the synagogue recites the Beracha over a flame before "Ve'Ata Kadosh," and then the Megila is read. After the Megila reading, the Arbit service is completed and then the rest of Habdala is recited. If a husband heard Habdala but then recites Habdala for his wife at home, it is preferable for her to recite the Beracha over the flame herself. If the congregation forgot to recite the Beracha over the flame before the Megila reading, and they remembered during the reading, they should interrupt the reading to light a candle and recite the Beracha.

In this continuing study I take a look at the Rapture Doctrine. Is this a Pre-Trib, as taught in most mainstream Churches are do Christians go through the Tribulation Period? I compare Thessalonians to Matthew 24 along with Revelation. I venture into Paul's writings to explore what he has to say, along with what Yahweh says in Ezekiel. In this Part 56, I finish our study in this Matthew 24 verse 47. I also go into Matthew 25 and talk about the 10 virgins47   verily = amēn “am-ane'” properly firm, that is, (figuratively) trustworthy. Shall make him (servant) ruler ...  =  Other words shall confirm his appointment over his household, and, as a reward, shall place him over all his property.over = in charge of. goods = substance, or property. all his goods = all that he hath. This is the reward.48   but and if = ‘but if' note the conditionEvil = Apparently a primary word; worthlessSay in his heart = Secretly suppose. Delayeth his coming = Will not return or may linger in a long time; or does not return as soon as was expected, and perhaps may not at all. Here are three characters of a bad servant/minister.1. They have little or no faith in the speedy coming of Yahshua Messiah, either to punish for wickedness, or to pardon and sanctify those who believe. It may be, they do not outwardly profess this, but they say it in their heart, and Yahweh searches their heart, and knows that they profess to teach what they do not believe.2. They govern with an absolute dominion, oppressing their colleagues and doing violence to the followers of Yahshua Messiah. 3. They lead an irregular life, they do not love the company of the children of Yahweh, but eats and drinks with the drunkards, preferring the tables of the great and the rich, whose god is their belly, and thus feeds themselves without fear.49   Smite his fellow-servants  = As soon as he conceives the idea of the delay in his lord's arrival, he changes his conduct, plays the master, and uses his power for oppression and injustice. To smite his fellow servants = i.e. those who are faithful to their master. And to eat and drink with the drunken. = He indulges in luxury and gluttony, choosing as his companions men of immoral habits.50 The lord (Yahshua Messiah) of that servant = Not by redemption and grace, but by creation and profession, Here are three punishments which answer to the three characteristics of the bad minister.1.  A sudden death, and the weight of Yahweh's judgments falling upon him, without a moment to prevent it: this answers to his infidelity and forgetfulness. He shall come in a day in which he looked not for him.2.   A separation from the communion of saints, and from all the gifts which he has abused: this answers to the abuse of his authority in the Ek-kelsia of Yahshua Messiah.3.   He shall have tears and eternal pains, in company with all such hypocrites as himself: and this answers to his luxurious lifestyle, pampering the flesh at the expense of his soul. That he is not aware of = The awful hour was utterly unknown; but this has not made him watchful; therefore be becomes unfaithful.51   Shall cut him asunder - This kind of punishment was anciently practiced. Sometimes it was done by the sword. Sometimes by saws! As in the case of Isaiah!Hypocrites = And appoint him his portion with the hypocrites — the worst of sinners.Matthew 25Oil = ‘el'-ah-yon' EL  = is essentially  the AlmightyJah  is Jehovah in a special sense and relation.Elyon = "the most high (God)"Have any questions? Hanukah- Reciting the Berachot Before Lighting; Customs for After Lighting; Positioning the Candles

Before one lights the Hanukah candles on the first night, he recites three Berachot: "Le'hadlik Ner Hanukah"; "She'asa Nisim"; and "She'heheyanu." On all other nights of Hanukah, one recites the first two Berachot but omits the Beracha of "She'heheyanu." According to Sephardic custom, the proper text for the first Beracha is "Le'hadlik Ner Hanukah," as opposed to "Le'hadlik Ner Shel Hanukah." This is in contrast to the Beracha recited over the Shabbat candles, for which we recite the text of "Le'hadlik Ner Shel Shabbat." The Halachic authorities explain that the phrase "Ner Shel Shabbat" indicates that one derives personal benefit from the light of the candles. This text is therefore inappropriate for the Hanukah candles, from which Halacha forbids deriving any sort of personal benefit. Furthermore, the omission of the word "Shel" in the Beracha over the Hanukah candles results in a total of thirteen words, which corresponds to God's thirteen attributes of mercy. The second Beracha, "She'asa Nisim," also has thirteen words, for the same reason. Together they bth equal '26', which is the numerical value of the name of Hashem. A Ger (convert to Judaism) may recite the text of "She'asa Nisim La'abotenu" ("who performed miracles for our forefathers"), despite the fact that his forefathers did not belong to the Jewish people. If he prefers, he may recite instead the text of, "She'asa Nisim Le'Yisrael" ("who performed miracles for Israel"). The Beracha of "She'asa Nisim" concludes with the phrase, "Ba'yamim Ha'hem Ba'zman Ha'ze"; it is incorrect to recite, "U'ba'zman Ha'ze." One should recite these Berachot with proper concentration and enthusiasm. The authorities add that one should dress for Hanukah candle lighting the same way he dresses for prayers in the synagogue, in order to give honor to the angels who come to his home for this special Misva. After lighting the Hanukah candles, one should recite the hymn, "Hanerot Halalu," which contains thirty-six words, corresponding to the thirty-six candles lit over the course of the eight days. It is then customary to recite "Mizmor Shir Hanukat Ha'bayit" (Tehilim 30), and then to recite seven times the final verse of Tehilim 90 ("Vi'hi No'am") and Tehilim 91 ("Yosheb Be'seter Elyon"). Each night of Hanukah (starting from the second night), the newest candle is positioned to the left of the previous night's candle. Thus, on the first night one positions the candle on the extreme right, adding one candle to the left each subsequent night. When one lights the Hanukah, he lights from left to right, meaning, the newest candle first.

We will first establish that the entire concept of “Lucifer the Light bringer” is a hoax launched in the Old Testament to cover-up Jehovah's palace coup (the War in Heaven) and the subsequent exile of Elyon and his Elohim (the Fallen Angels). Next we will examine the Medieval Cathars, their origins and beliefs. We will consider the survival of Valentinian Gnosticism in Southern France and the Troubador Courts of Love. We will describe the Grail and its Hermetic-Sabian Celestial origin as set forth in von Eschenbach's Parzival – and we will reveal what the physical Holy Grail really was. When we as believers are experiencing and enjoying the wonderful blessings of the LORD, we are so prone to wander from Him and focus on the blessings instead of the Blesser. This reminds me of the old hymn written by Robert Robinson in 1758 when he was only 22 years old, called "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing". One of verses goes like this: “O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here's my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above.” Especially in our contemporary Christian culture today we tend to sing about and think only of God as our Friend, Who loves us and we can do anything we want to do with no accountability.  We forget that He is also our Judge and one day He is coming, and we must stand before Him as He sits on His Holy throne!  Psalm 50 is a message Psalm to remind God's people of that aspect of God. The chapter ends with this warning and admonition in verse 22: "Now consider this, you who forget God, Lest I tear you in pieces, And there be none to deliver”. The Psalmist introduces this message with a reminder that God is a holy and righteous Judge (vv. 1-6). Human judges are called "The Honorable," or “Your Honor”, but this Judge is called "The Mighty One" (El), "God" (Elohim), "the Lord" (Jehovah), "the Most High" (Elyon, v. 14), and "God" (Eloah). He is Judge (vv. 4, 6), Prosecutor, and Jury—and He knows all about those who are on trial! He calls heaven and earth to witness the proceedings (vv. 1, 4, 6; see Deut. 4:26, 32; 31:28; 32:1; Isa. 1:2; Mic. 1:2 and 6:1-2).  “The Mighty One, God the LORD, Has spoken”.  When a judge speaks everyone listens carefully because his word is final. No one argues with the judge! And my friend no one will argue with God on the day that sits to Judge His people. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God will shine forth. Our God shall come, and shall not keep silent; A fire shall devour before Him, And it shall be very tempestuous all around Him.” When a judge enters a courtroom, everybody stands respectfully; but God's entrance into this assembly is accompanied by the shining of His glory (80:1; 94:2) and a fiery tempest.  This is not unlike the scene at Mount Sinai when He gave His law (Ex. 19:18; 24:17; Deut. 4:11-12; 33:2; Heb. 12:18, 29). When we forget the transcendence of God, we find it easier to sin. When this Psalm was written the ark was with the people on Mount Zion ("Immanuel, God with us").  But the nation must not forget Mount Sinai where their God revealed His holiness and greatness. The Psalmist praised Zion for its beauty (v. 2; 48:2; Lam. 2:15), but he also wants us to remember "the beauty of holiness" (27:4; 90:17; 110:3). God is a righteous Judge (vv. 4, 6; see also Psalms 7:11; 9:8; 11:4-7; 75:2; 96:10, 13; 98:9), and judgment begins with His own people (1 Peter 4:17). They are "godly ones," that is, a people set apart exclusively for the Lord because of the holy covenant (vv. 5, 16; Ex. 19:1-9; 24:4-8; Amos 2:3). Some of His people had sinned, and He had been longsuffering with them and silent about the matter (vv. 3, 21). They have misinterpreted His silence as consent (Eccl. 8:11; Isa. 42:14; 57:11), but now the time had come for the Holy God to speak. The purpose of this "trial" was not to judge and condemn the sinners but to expose their sins and give them the opportunity to repent and return to the Lord. Remember 1 Corinthians 11:31-32: “For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.” Please take time today to let God's Word cleanse you as you reflect on the condition of your heart and life! God bless!

God is our Refuge and Strength - Psalm 46:1-11

Thinking on Scripture with Dr. Steven R. Cook

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 25, 2022 43:34

Psalm 46 is classified as one of the Psalms of Zion. The others include Psalm 48, 84, 87, and 122. These songs of Zion celebrate Jerusalem as the place where God dwells with His people (i.e., the city of God). Psalm 46 focuses on God as the refuge and strength of His people when they turn to Him in a time of distress. This psalm is very personal. God is declared to be “our refuge and strength” (Psa 46:1b), and “is with us” and “is our refuge” (Psa 46:7, 11). The theme is repeated throughout the psalms where the Lord is the source of His people's strength (Psa 29:11; 68:35), their refuge (Psa 14:6; 61:3; 62:7-8; 71:7; 73:28; 91:2; 142:5), and their stronghold (Psa 9:9; 18:2; 48:3; 59:9, 16-17). The wise seek Him because they are a people in need (Psa 22:19; 27:9; 40:13; 44:26; 63:7). Psalm 46 is constructed in three parts. For God's faithful people, He is their refuge and strength, even though the world around them is chaotic (Psa 46:1-3). God is among His faithful people and will protect them when the enemy invades (Psa 46:4-7). God calls His people to witness the defeat of the Gentile nations (Psa 46:8-11). This Psalm inspired Martin Luther to write his hymn, A Mighty Fortress is Our God. Occasion & Date      The historical background of the psalm is likely God's deliverance of His people, under the leadership of King Hezekiah, when the Assyrians besieged the city of Jerusalem in 701 BC (2 Ki 18:1—19:37; Isa 36:1—37:38). Psalm 46:1-3      The psalm opens with a superscription, which reads, “For the choir director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah, set to Alamoth. A Song” (Psa 46:1a). The sons of Korah are somewhat of a mystery. They are mentioned several times in the psalms (Psa 42:1; 44:1; 45:1; 46:1; 47:1; 48:1; 49:1; 84:1; 85:1; 87:1; 88:1), but not much is said about them. According to Allen Ross, “In the superscription there are a few introductory notes. It was for the sons of Korah, a Levitical group that performed the psalm at times.”[1] The term Alamoth (עַלְמָה) refers to a young girl of marriageable age. According to Peter Craigie, “Alamoth (lit. ‘maidens, young women') might be the name of the tune or musical setting to which the psalm was sung. More probably, it may indicate a high musical setting, or being sung by soprano voices.”[2]      It was a song of confidence in God, in which the people sang, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psa 46:1b). Here, the psalmist pictures God as a refuge (מַחֲסֶה machaseh), a place where His people can run for protection from the storms of life (cf., Isa 25:4). He also says that God is their strength (עֹז oz), which means He fortifies their souls in troubling times. Because God is omnipresent, He is always near to those who call upon Him and is a help (עֶזְרָה ezrah) in difficult times. Without God's help, His people would surely be destroyed when the storms of life arise. The word trouble (צָרָה tsarah) means one is experiencing “need, distress, anxiety.”[3] It speaks of the psychological disequilibrium one experiences when threatened by a rising force. The good news is that God is a strong refuge and help during times of calamity, and by faith, His people run to Him for shelter.      Turning to God in turbulent times produces confidence that stabilizes the stressed-out soul. The psalmist states, “Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah” (Psa 46:2-3). Here, the psalmist pictures a worst-case scenario in which the earth, mountains, and sea change and behave in radically disruptive ways. Though ecological calamities are the natural reading of these verses (and certainly does not exclude them), the later mention of nations (vs 6) and wars (vs 9) tells us he is speaking metaphorically. According to Tremper Longman, “The psalmist utilizes the well-known images of mountains and waters to communicate the most formidable trouble possible. While mountains are images of security and permanence, the waters are forces of chaos. Thus, to envision the mountains being overwhelmed by the waters is a metaphor that points to the ultimate nightmare, or, as we might say today, ‘All hell is breaking loose!'”[4] Adversity in life is inevitable, but stress in the soul is optional, depending how God's people handle it. If God's people hold to the theology of the first verse, that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psa 46:1b), the benefit is that they will not fear when everything comes crashing down around them. It's natural that a believer's initial response be that of concern; however, if God's people can quickly adjust their thinking and align it with Him and His Word, it will produce stability in their souls. Psalm 46:4-7      Apart from the previous scenario of chaos, the psalmist provides a contrasting picture, saying, “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy dwelling places of the Most High” (Psa 46:4). The city of God is Jerusalem (Psa 48:1-2; 87:2-3). In the city of God, the water is pictured differently. Rather than being a chaotic force that threatens to destroy, it is pictured as a calm river that makes glad the souls of those near its gentle flow. For ancient Israel, the source of water was the Gihon spring that was underneath the city of Jerusalem, and it was harnessed to flow into pools such as that of Siloam (John 9:7). God's title of Most High (עֶלְיוֹן Elyon) pictures Him as the Ruler who is above all creation and able to protect those who turn to Him.      Furthermore, God's people do not need to search far for Him, for “God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns” (Psa 46:5). The Lord is always with His people, in their midst, and the benefit is that they will not be moved, though all the world around them slips and slides in every imaginable way. It was God, not the city or its walls, that gave His people stability (cf., Zeph 3:15). The phrase, “God will help her when morning dawns”, speaks of a time when the darkness of night—and the troubles associated with it—has passed and a new day dawns.      The psalmist speaks of the trouble they'd been facing, saying, “The nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered; He raised His voice, the earth melted” (Psa 46:6). The earlier language (Psa 46:3) of the seas roaring (הָמָה hamah) is here applied to the nations which make an uproar (הָמָה hamah). And the picture of the mountains which slip (מוֹט mot) into the sea (Psa 46:2) here describe the kingdoms of men which tottered (מוֹט mot). At the mere raising of God's voice, the nations, kingdoms, and the earth itself, all melt away when He speaks.      Then comes the first of two refrains. The psalmist states, “The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah” (Psa 46:7). Here we observe one of God's titles, the LORD of hosts (Yahweh Sabaoth) which literally means, the LORD of the armies. The picture is that of heaven's Master, who commands His armies of angels to do His will. Remember, it was God who sent His angel to rescue His people during the Assyrian siege, where it was recorded, “Then it happened that night that the angel of the LORD went out and struck 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians; and when men rose early in the morning, behold, all of them were dead” (2 Ki 19:35). The refrain in Psalm 46:7 focuses attention on the Lord. God is with His people, and He is their stronghold. William VanGemeren states: "The great doctrine of the presence of God, even in the OT, affirms that the Great King has identified himself with his people; therefore they need not fear. God's people will never fall. They will always be assured of his readiness to help them (v. 5). The help of God “at break of day” (cf. Ex 14:27) suggests that in the darkness of distress the people of God know that the Lord will not let them suffer unduly long (cf. Psa 30:6–7; 90:14). His acts of unfailing love are renewed each morning (cf. Lam 3:22–23)."[5] Psalm 46:8-11      The psalmist calls for God's people to set their minds on the Lord, saying, “Come, behold the works of the LORD, Who has wrought desolations in the earth” (Psa 46:8). Operating from divine viewpoint allows God's people to see His work in the earth and in their lives. And what events is the psalmist describing? Specifically, that “He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariots with fire” (Psa 46:9). That God makes wars to cease, not just in Israel, but “to the end of the earth”, connotes the Messianic age that will come when Jesus returns at His second coming (Rev 19:11-21), putting down rebellion and establishing His kingdom on earth (Rev 20:1-6), which kingdom will be global in nature (Isa 2:4). The reference to the bow and the spear is a synecdoche in which the parts are used to represent the whole (i.e., all the instruments of war). Furthermore, the chariots were the tanks of the ancient world and represented a nation's military force at its greatest. But these He burns with fire, destroying and rendering them useless.      God, who will bring all wars to an end, says, “Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psa 46:10). The word cease translates the Hebrew verb רָפָה raphah, which means to “let alone, do nothing, be quiet.”[6] And the form of the verb is causative (hiphil), which means those who are acting must relax their efforts. But to whom is the psalmist directing the command to cease? According to Allen Ross, the directive primarily speaks to the Gentile nations of the world, who are “exhorted to stop all their tumult and recognize that God is sovereign, and that only his authority and words matter.”[7] Derek Kidner agrees, saying, “the injunction Be still … is not in the first place comfort for the harassed but a rebuke to a restless and turbulent world.”[8] And Tremper Longman states, “In verse 10, the poet quotes God, who asserts his sovereignty not only over Israel, but over all the nations of the earth. He commands that their uproar be silenced and that they all recognize that he is God.”[9] Though God is speaking to the hostile Gentile nations of the world, which are under His sovereign control (Psa 135:6; Dan 2:21; 4:35), the song itself was to be sung by His people, which would instill confidence in God and courage toward the circumstances of life. They were, like all God's people, to live by faith (Heb 10:38; 11:6). The chief end of history will be to God's glory, for He will make it so. What He promises, He will bring to pass (Isa 46:9-11). His people need only watch and wait for the Lord to act as He promises.      The psalmist closes out his song with the repeated refrain, “The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah” (Psa 46:11). Here is a refrain to be heard over and over again, for it seats into the hearers consciousness the greatness of God who is with them. God is their stronghold in times of trouble, and by faith they trust Him and His promises and find rest for their souls. God will be exalted in all the earth. His Word declares it. The challenge for the hearers is to live by faith and not feelings, and to look to God more than to themselves or their circumstances. Conclusion      Psalm 46 is about trusting God despite any difficulties that may arise. Whether in natural disaster or national crisis, God is always a refuge and strength for His people, and in His presence and promises they find rest for their souls. Allen Ross states, “In this psalm the believers are strong, being filled with confidence in the presence of the living God. And today the more that believers focus on the power of God, the presence of God, and the promises of God, the more they will find comfort and confidence to deal with the tragedies and troubles of the world.”[10] Present Application      God continues to be a refuge and strength for His people during times of disaster or crisis. Though adversity is inevitable, the stress in our souls is optional. As God's people, our mental stability is largely predicated on the biblical content and continuity of our thinking. When we learn to take in God's Word on a regular basis, it creates a bank of theological information in our souls that we can draw upon when facing difficult times. But to benefit from God's promises, we must take our thoughts captive so that His Word flows in the stream of our consciousness without disruption (2 Cor 10:5). If we fail to live by faith, then our knowledge of God and His promises are merely academic, and we forfeit the confidence that can be ours in troubling times. Faith in God and His promises means no fear; at least none that rises to such a level as to overwhelm the soul and create psychological and emotional instability.      Biblically, we know God permits us to be tested by difficulties. It is His will that we be in this hostile world (John 17:15), that we learn His Word (2 Tim 2:15; 3:16-17; 1 Pet 2:2; 2 Pet 3:18), live by faith (2 Cor 5:7; Heb 10:38; 11:6), advance to spiritual maturity (1 Cor 14:20; Eph 4:11-13; Heb 6:1), and serve as lights to others (Eph 5:8-10). We also know the nations of the world are currently under Satan's control (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11), who operates by deception (Rev 12:9; 20:3, 8), that he might weaken them (Isa 14:12). And God permits this for a time. But a day is coming when the sovereign Lord of all the earth will silence the nations, quieting their hostilities, and will bring all wars to an end (Isa 2:4). At that time, our glorious King, the Lord Jesus, will execute His righteous reign on earth for a thousand years (Rev 20:4-6), and afterwards, will hand the kingdom over to the Father (1 Cor 15:24). As Christians living in this fallen world, we are to walk by faith, and are constantly “looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus” (Tit 2:13). Come Lord Jesus! We are ready for Your reign.       [1] Allen P. In the wake of the the Babylonian Conquest many Jews found themselves living in captivity, prisoners of their conquerors. Their city destroyed, their worship interrupted, they longed for the days when Yahweh would once again rule over them and provide safety for their nation and community. Thus was born the lament psalms, songs meant to inform God of their difficulties and beg his assistance, psalms that offered praise and promises in exchange for aid.
