Christy has 4 living children, with one on the way. She and her husband are advocates for foster + adoption, and her loss journey includes an ectopic pregnancy, blighted ovum, early and late-term miscarriages, IVF + infertility, and lots and lots of grief, joy, hope, pain, and love.  Christy is a close personal friend of mine (Holly) and is a worship leader at a local church here in Virginia Beach, VA. From Apathy to Empathy | Ep. 43

Holly here-I've had empathy on the mind lately. There's been a lot of horrible things happening in the world lately, in America right now. Between COVID and the brutal killings of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd in past few weeks...these are some very big events that, while I am learning, and I fear I don't know enough to effectively speak on a podcast about. But then again, we're not here to have all the answers to be experts on anything other than sharing in our human experiences of suffering and grief and striving to keep our eyes fixed on heaven, on Jesus, the only one who can redeem and restore. So I hope that's what you'll take away from this conversation starter today-that He alone can redeem, and He has chosen us, His church, to be conduits of His grace and truth. And in order to be effective vessels for Gospel hope, especially in times of suffering and grief when hope is most needed, we must seek to grow in empathy. To move from apathy to empathy. So here is a brief overview of how I personally have experienced growth in empathy due to my own personal trials, and how I'm pursuing continued growth in empathy as I grow in learning and love for my neighbors who are different from me. Because, as 1 Corinthians 12 says, if one part of the Body suffers, we all suffer.

She is a lawyer, she lives in Florida with her husband Devin and her son Ethan. As I (Holly) read through Kim’s book in preparation for this episode, something that really stuck out to me was in the intro—Kim speaks to the reader-to the grieving mom-and she says something really simple, yet profound. She says, “take my hand. Borrow my hope.” In today’s interview, Kim does just that. She takes us on a journey of hope that only the restoration of the Gospel can bring. Over 10 years into her grief journey, Kim has so much to offer in sharing her story and the freedom Christ brings to us loss mamas. We chat about anger/angry prayers, the temporary nature of this life, scriptural examples of lament, and a stunning glimpse into heaven provided by her precious son Austin, which ultimately led Kim to begin following Jesus. How can we reconcile the goodness of God when the worst happens again and it feels like lightning keeps striking in the same spot? In today’s episode, we’re sharing some of our own experiences with recurrent loss, as well as the frustrations and questions we’ve wrestled with. We also take a closer look at the Biblical account of Job--a righteous man who walked through incredible suffering upon suffering. Noticing and celebrating our different strengths, experiences, and backgrounds can be glorifying to God and can even foster unity as the body of Christ. The problem with comparison arises when we measure one another in a way that is rooted in pride, bitterness, or self-centeredness. We’ve both been tempted to fall into the trap of self-seeking comparison in our grief. We’ve found ourselves tempted by the questions: Who has it harder? Whose pain is worse? Who is grieving better? Who is having the bigger impact? Why can’t my life be more like theirs? Perhaps you’ve been there too. This week we’re talking about comparison, specifically as it applies to grief and loss. Healing Pt. 3 - When the Healing Doesn't Come | Ep. 19

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 16, 2018 54:20

In the last two episodes we’ve discussed the miracles of Jesus, culminating with the ultimate miracle of his resurrection. We’ve shared scriptural examples of why we are to pray, and heard a powerful testimony from a mama friend who witnessed God’s miraculous works in her life.  But what about when the healing doesn’t come? We serve a God who has the power to do miraculous works in our lives and invites us to boldly approach his throne with our requests--so what can we cling to when the answer is “no”? How can we reconcile God’s goodness and the power of prayer with a miracle that never comes? We invite you to join us as we continue in our 4-part series on prayer and healing. In our latest episode, we share the ways we wrestled with the purpose of prayer after losing our children, take a closer look at what the Bible says about prayer and submission, and point one another toward the unshakeable hope we have in Christ’s faithfulness even when the answer is “no”. Episode 19: Healing Pt 3: When the healing doesn’t come is now available.

Today we’re hearing a personal testimony from our friend, Alex Johnson, At her 18-week anatomy scan, Alex learned that her daughter was missing an essential piece of her brain and would likely fight for her life. As she began to mentally prepare for an unbearable loss, Alex cried out to God for a miracle that would astonish her daughter’s medical team. We know that many of you did not receive the miracle you asked for. We understand that many of you may feel “burned” by God, after begging on your knees for healing. We’ve been there, friend--we’ve questioned, we’ve shaken our fists at the sky, and have asked why. We’ve battled against doubt--doubt that God hears us and that He has the power to heal. Oh friend, we’re with you--and we want to take your hand today and ever-so-gently remind you that God does hear you, He loves you, and He is sovereign over sickness and death. We feel led so strongly to share Alex’s story because it shows another side of prayer and God’s power--a side that many of us may have forgotten in our grief. Alex speaks with the utmost sincerity and humility as she shares the story of God’s miraculous work in her life, while acknowledging and aching with those of you who did not receive the miracle you hoped for. No matter your questions, your doubts, or your hurts, we invite you to join us to a special interview with our friend Alex. In the months following our sons' diagnoses, we often found ourselves on our knees praying for miracle. God, in all his loving kindness, chose to heal our children in the eternal sense rather than a physical one. Perhaps you’ve found yourself there too--perhaps you’ve prayed with such faith and been handed sorrow rather than the celebration you had hoped for. Perhaps you’ve even felt burned by God and have questioned the purpose of prayer. We’ve been there. Today we’re releasing the first in a four-part series on prayer and healing. Burying a child is perhaps one of the most painful and unnatural experiences a person could face. We expect our children to bury us, not the other way around. Yet when we look at the grave through the lens of the gospel, the grave truly has no merit from an eternal standpoint for those who are in Christ. Thanks to Christ--His death and resurrection--the grave has no power over those who know Him. Join us as we candidly discuss our own experiences with the devastating process of burying a child, and explore the promises we have in scripture regarding the implications of Christ’s resurrection, our new bodies, and the gift of eternal life. We don't know about you, but we like to be in control. While our hearts yearn to live a life of full surrender to God, this hasn't always been easy. Time and time again we find ourselves desperately clinging to certain areas of our lives, rather than wholly entrusting every detail to an all-powerful God. Yet even in this struggle, we are gently called us to lay everything down at His feet--the big things and the small things. We see this call over and over again in the gospels, as Jesus calls his followers to lay themselves down--or in other words, to surrender--and to follow him. Episode 11: Surrender is now available on iTunes and Stitcher. Come join us as we discuss what it means to surrender, why God calls us to surrender, and also discuss why it has been so frustratingly difficult for us to do. The hashtag pops up frequently as we scroll through our social media feeds. It’s often found tagged on photos of smiling families, cozy homes, new cars, and exciting life events. #Blessed. The posters behind these photos are indeed blessed. All of those earthly gifts--friendships, comfort, success, provision--are unmerited gifts from God that we don’t deserve and could never earn on our own. Each of these gifts certainly warrant gratitude and giving Him all the glory. But this is only part of the picture. You lose your house. The cancer returns. Your child becomes ill. Your friends turn their back on you. Your baby dies. We’d rarely feel inclined to add a #blessed to those posts, but the truth remains. In our suffering and in our pain, He is still good and we are still blessed. Episode 10: #Blessed is now available. We hope you’ll join us as we candidly share ways the phrase “so blessed” has stung since losing our sons, dig deeper into the definition of a “blessing”, and talk about the greatest blessing of all. We've found such encouragement through the communities around us--our small groups, our churches, our families, and even in online communities just like this. Being in community is arguably the main way that we show Christ’s love to others--in loving others and serving others, people both inside and outside the Kingdom will know that we belong to God. In this episode, we dive deeper into the concept of community--why it's important, the challenges that come with it, and how to be more intentional about creating community in each of our own lives, especially in the wake of trials and suffering. Regardless of whether you've lost a child or not, we think this one will be relatable to most of us! (Because we've all experienced suffering to some level, am I right?) As we think about our friends, our sisters, our own mothers, and the women in our communities, it is clear that motherhood is beautifully unique for each person. It isn't limited to having living children on earth, or even having carried a baby in your womb. In this beautiful fabric of unique circumstances, there is so much we can learn from one another as we all strive toward living well and glorifying God with the lives we’ve been given--even when our lives look messy and complicated. Loss is definitely messy and complicated. Perhaps it has caused you to question your identity as a mother. Perhaps it has raised new challenges in explaining death, heaven, and Jesus to your living children. We have both been prayerfully planning for this episode for weeks. We know this topic is sensitive and may stir up a wide spectrum of emotions. We also do not expect to completely or perfectly answer this question in an hour. Our hope is simply to start the conversation and point one another toward the truth we have in scripture.
