In this episode, I got to talk to Comedian Christy Miller about how she's been faring after the death of her mother Shirley. Christy has always been a comedian who pulls no punches in her act, and she came by her sense of humor from her mother, always pushing the bounderies of what was deemed appropriate. Having opened for Andrew "Dice" Clay as well as Paul Mooney, Christy has always been the type to not care what other people think, often using humor to process heavy topics. We talk about how great it is to have family that embraces our career choices, and how important it is to surround ourselves with people who get us and let us make terrible jokes in the face of devastating events. Episode 23 of Living and Leading with Emotional Intelligence: Exploring Emotions and Setting Boundaries with Christy MillerThis episode is probably the most raw, deep, and relatable conversations I've recorded on this podcast. Christy spares no expression of emotions or words when sharing her many years of struggle with self-love, emotional expression, and establishing healthy boundaries. Christy also takes us through her shift in mindset and behavior, embracing herself, her emotions, and the power that comes with setting healthy boundaries and developing emotional intelligence. Christy Miller is the co-owner of Mnemosyne Photography Studio, holds a BFA in Photography and a BA in Art History, and is an award-winning photographer. She has an outstanding knowledge of her field and is able to make the often confusing decision-making process easy for clients. She’s successfully photographed hundreds of families, women, and men in a way that provides emotional motivation and support like no other. Her energy behind the camera is her fire-power, which is contagious in the studio. Her passion is creating heirloom portraits through contemporary glamour and personal branding that help women see themselves in a new light! Capturing, and transforming how women see their bodies is a foundational component behind the studio’s values and thriving community. She believes every woman is worthy of being celebrated in photographs. No Ounce Wasted Christy Miller is opening Marfa Meats in Marfa, Texas, a place famous for being isolated. Her vision is to create a USDA-inspected and state-inspected processing facility and get a local economy started around the existing local ranchers, who typically ship cattle to be processed. As anyone in the industry knows, it takes a special kind of grit to convince ranchers, local real estate owners, USDA officials and consumers to get on board. Hailing from Indiana, Christy Miller comes from a background not in ranching, but finance. She arrived in Marfa five years ago, has slowly planted her feet in town full time and now is undertaking a meat processing plant project. 12 losses. That's what mama Christy Miller has lived and learned through, and today we get to hear her story of growing and grieving, clinging to Christ, the hope of heaven, and the joy + peace on THIS side of eternity that can only be provided by way of the Holy Spirit. Christy has 4 living children, with one on the way. She and her husband are advocates for foster + adoption, and her loss journey includes an ectopic pregnancy, blighted ovum, early and late-term miscarriages, IVF + infertility, and lots and lots of grief, joy, hope, pain, and love. Christy is a close personal friend of mine (Holly) and is a worship leader at a local church here in Virginia Beach, VA. While I'd heard her story before, I found myself speechless + humbled all over again Christy's testimony. "Years ago I would have said, 12? No way, I'm not doing this. But-here I am, and we're on the other side, and yes-there's sadness and there's heartbreak-and there's also been a lot of healing and blessings (that don't wipe away the grief)." Christy Miller was randomly punched in the face by a guy on the R train. She is my guest. A man attacked by a stiletto heal for preaching on train. 82-yr-old power lifter, fights off home invader.
FAN GIRL ALERT. You guys. I have loved Robin Jones Gunn's writing for over twenty years. One of her main characters in over 50 of her novels- Christy Miller- felt like one of my best friends in middle school and high school. Robin has been a mentor from a distance for years and a friend that I do not deserve and I am so so honored she would take time and join us on the show today. While you may know her name from Father Christmas books (and Hallmark Christmas movies!) but her newest novel Becoming Us was a favorite vacation read for me this summer. Make sure you grab Becoming Us and really any and all of Robin's novels. You guys have got to meet Christy. She's the best. :) . . . . http://anniefdowns.com #thatsoundsfunpodcast ... join in the conversation wherever hashtags are welcome. :)
