Nous sommes le 10 octobre 1895. Le journal « Fin de siècle », fondé à Paris, quatre ans plus tôt, s'interroge sur le départ annoncé de la danseuse star de l'Opéra Garnier, Cléo de Mérode. On murmure qu'elle pourrait rejoindre, en Belgique, celui que l'on prétend son amant : le roi Léopold II, de quarante ans son aînée. On peut lire dans l'hebdomadaire à potins : « S'il faut en croire les on-dit, MM Bertrand et Gailhard, directeurs de l'Opéra, quoique désolés de se séparer de leur pensionnaire, lui ont galamment accordé la résiliation de son engagement, sur un simple désir exprimé par S.M. Léopold II, roi des Belges. Six jours plus tard « Le Petit Troyen » qui se définit comme quotidien républicain radical, confirme la décision, qui pourtant ne figure pas dans les registres de l'Opéra : « Melle Cléo de Mérode quitte le ballet de l'Opéra pour le théâtre de la Monnaie de Bruxelles. Les bonnes camarades qui n'ont pas la langue en poche, je vous prie de le croire, donnent à ce départ des raisons plus ou moins romanesque. Un grand personnage de Belgique aurait décidé ce changement et les commentaires vont bon train. » Qui est Cléo de Mérode que les mauvaises langues appelleront Cléopold. Qu'en est-il, en vérité, de sa relation avec le monarque ? Cléo de Mérode que, bien plus tard, Simone de Beauvoir comparera à une prostituée, était une icône, celle de la Belle époque. L'histoire de Gilles Garnier, surnommé le “loup-garou de Dole”, est l'un des procès les plus étranges et terrifiants de la Renaissance. Cet ermite, vivant dans les bois de Saint-Bonnot, près de Dole, dans l'actuelle Franche-Comté, fut accusé en 1573 d'avoir assassiné et dévoré plusieurs enfants. Son procès, mené par le Parlement de Dole, est resté célèbre comme l'un des premiers cas documentés de “lycanthropie judiciaire” — autrement dit, la croyance selon laquelle un homme pouvait réellement se transformer en bête.À l'époque, la région était frappée par la famine. Les habitants vivaient dans la peur des loups et des brigands. Gilles Garnier, un ermite pauvre et marginal, vivait à l'écart avec sa femme, se nourrissant de ce qu'il trouvait dans la forêt. Bientôt, des disparitions d'enfants se multiplièrent : leurs corps, retrouvés mutilés, portaient des marques de morsures. Très vite, la rumeur enfla : un “homme-loup” rôdait.Les villageois organisèrent des battues. Un soir, des témoins affirmèrent avoir vu Garnier sous la forme d'un loup, traînant le corps d'un enfant. Arrêté, il fut torturé — pratique courante à l'époque — et finit par avouer. Selon les procès-verbaux, il raconta qu'un esprit lui serait apparu, lui donnant une pommade magique pour se transformer en loup afin de mieux chasser et nourrir sa femme. Sous l'effet de cette “métamorphose”, il aurait tué plusieurs enfants et consommé leur chair.Le tribunal le déclara coupable de sorcellerie, de lycanthropie et de cannibalisme. Le 18 janvier 1574, Gilles Garnier fut condamné au bûcher. Son exécution publique visait à “purifier” la communauté d'une présence jugée démoniaque. Pour les juges, il n'était pas un simple criminel, mais un homme ayant pactisé avec le diable, symbole vivant du mal.Aujourd'hui, les historiens voient en Gilles Garnier une victime du contexte social et religieux de son époque. Il s'agit de la galerie peinte par Annibale Carracci, son frère Agostino et leurs élèves.Pour permettre au plus large public d'en apprécier l'immense beauté, le musée du Louvre va en quelque sorte déplacer la Galerie Farnèse à Paris en la remontant « façon puzzle » à l'aide du plus extraordinaire ensemble jamais rassemblé de dessins préparatoires à ce décor. Car si la Galerie Farnèse a tant suscité l'admiration et tant inspiré les artistes – de la Galerie des Glaces de Versailles, au foyer de l'Opéra Garnier, pour ne citer que ces exemples –, c'est tout autant pour la beauté de ses fresques que pour celle de ses dessins préparatoires. Jamais auparavant, pour aucun autre décor, l'on n'avait conservé autant de dessins, du croquis rapide esquissant les toutes premières idées de l'artiste au grand carton de plusieurs mètres de côté, où le dessin est mis à l'échelle de la fresque. Immédiatement disputés par les collectionneurs les plus avertis, ces dessins sont rapidement devenus de véritables marqueurs de prestige et enjeux de pouvoir. Aujourd'hui, le musée du Louvre – héritier des collections royales françaises – en conserve la première collection au monde, avec les Collections royales britanniques, dont 25 oeuvres sont prêtées pour l'exposition par Sa Majesté le Roi à partir de la collection royale.L'exposition racontera ainsi l'histoire d'une fascination véritablement européenne, en présentant par ailleurs pour la première fois, les derniers vestiges tout juste restaurés d'une réplique de la Galerie Farnèse, voulue par Louis XIV au palais des Tuileries, aujourd'hui disparu. Cataanda James, Chief Beauty Officer of CJ The Beauty Group, talks about building a career that surpasses her wildest dreams.  Cataanda James is a textured-hair expert, educator, and beauty industry strategist whose career embodies resilience, authenticity, and the courage to follow one's passion.  Raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, she grew up inspired by her mother's love of fashion and flawless grooming.  By junior high, Cataanda was already recognized as the "cat-eye queen," sharing makeup techniques with classmates, and by her college years, she had turned her dorm room into a thriving salon.  What others dismissed as a pastime became her undeniable calling. Her journey wasn't without resistance. While her mother supported her talent wholeheartedly, her father insisted that beauty was not a "real career."  Determined to prove otherwise, Cataanda pursued cosmetology, but soon discovered that many schools neglected textured hair altogether.  The turning point came when she enrolled at Dudley Cosmetology University in North Carolina, where she was immersed in technical excellence and, equally important, a business-first philosophy.  There she learned to approach beauty not only as an art, but as a profession requiring entrepreneurship, customer service, and polish. From there, she built a diverse foundation, working in barbershops, marketing herself with Polaroid photos long before Instagram existed, and mastering speed and precision at Supercuts.  A bold move to Baltimore in 2002 brought her closer to New York and opened new doors.  At MAC Cosmetics, she refined her artistry, attracted a broader client base, and stepped into freelance opportunities that connected her to the wider beauty industry. In 2003, Cataanda began a career-defining relationship with L'Oréal.  What started with consumer events grew into a nearly decade-long role at the New York Technical Center, where she became the company's Texture Expert.  There, she collaborated with chemists and product developers, testing innovations for brands such as L'Oréal Paris, Garnier, Carol's Daughter, and Dark & Lovely, and influencing product launches worldwide.  Following the pandemic's impact on the industry, Cataanda joined The Mane Choice as a Brand Educator, focusing exclusively on curly and textured hair.  While that chapter was valuable, her entrepreneurial spirit ultimately led her to create CJ The Beauty Group, a consultancy dedicated to helping beauty brands innovate with integrity, test products rigorously, and design inclusive strategies that authentically serve textured-hair consumers.
