Despite a reputation as the finest New Orleans funk band ever, the Meters didn't get their full due in the first go-round back in the 1960s and '70s. Their recordings for Josie, Island and Reprise were the pinnacle of dirty Southern funk in an era when glossy, uptown disco ruled the R&B roost, but they were admired by the likes of Paul McCartney and Robert Palmer, who both hired them as sidemen. It's shocking how much better the Meters sound as a whole than any of these musicians do leading their own bands playing the same timeless material. The quartet had a simmering feud for nearly three decades that they patched up after Katrina hit, and Wednesday's concert at the Hollywood Bowl was their 11th gig together in the last nine months. They stretched out on songs such as "Cissy Strut" (one of their two top 40 singles), "Look Ka Py-Py" and songs that organist Art Neville took with him to the Neville Brothers after the Meters split in 1976, "People Say" and "Hey Pocky Way." While the songs remain the same, their sound retains its density and drive due to Art's steady and even ferocious organ playing and George Porter Jr.'s bass playing, which fills gaps the way the best reggae players have done. Zigaboo Modeliste, as good a drummer as the rock world has seen, is inventive and inspiring; at times, he creates the illusion of a backbeat and goes his merry way, filling in spaces with deft attacks on the tom-toms or riding a cymbal, seemingly never duplicating himself during a song except when absolutely necessary. Guitarist Leo Nocentelli has dramatically altered his sound, going for a hard rock-meets-soul style; technique's far flashier than his swampy or scratchy sounds he on the band's legendary records. The Bowl's screens displayed Nocentelli's dazzling fretwork, and seeing his effort helped adjust the ears to a sound that had more in common with the Isley Brothers than New Orleans. Band closed with a sultry slice of soul from '74, "It Ain't No Use," which a contempo radio programmer could put on the air today alongside Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" without a single listener batting an eye. Their music, while it has a distinct sense of place, was quite ahead of its time. Art, who continues to struggle with back problems and walked across the stage with a cane, did double duty, appearing with his brothers, nephews and a few hired hands. The Nevilles far surpassed their tepid 1997 Bowl appearance by blending just enough uptempo numbers with the ballads of Aaron, who has an album of vintage soul covers due in stores Sept. 19. The angelic-voiced bear of a man turned in a spine-tingling rendition of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and followed with a reggae-tinged spin on Bill Wither's "Ain't No Sunshine" and a perfectly calm version of his 1967 hit "Tell It Like It Is."

Episode 136. Dumb Stuff People Say About RunningI hear all sorts of stuff. Some of it is inspiring. Some of it is motivational. Some of it is super smart. Some of it challenges my preconceived notions. Some of it is really... really... really dumb. Well, I figured that I could save you the time figuring out that some advice is asinine and sub-moronic by calling out that stupendously stupid advice on one of my podcast episodes. This means you'll have more time in your day to do cool things and learn about new subjects and expand your horizons. In today's episode, I share a lesson about lessons: don't hoard notes, capture only what truly resonates, and store it in a searchable system. From there, I frame leadership as intelligent followership: mentor, teacher, and coach. I break down the energy crisis between who you are and who you want people to think you are, then shift into abundance. Ask for help, find open minds, and create value by giving people more of what they want or less of what they don't. I cover perceived value, knowing your bottom line, go no go plans, and the three no rule, plus how brands like Apple turn customers into lifelong advocates.
A small chocolate bar. A tablespoon of honey. A hummingbird. Those are a few different things that weigh around 21g. And you can add the human soul to that list, according to the 21 grams experiment from the early 20th century. That's right; while there's no scientific evidence that the soul even exists, a theory emerged not only suggesting that it does, but also putting its weight at the figure of 21g. The 21g figure comes from research by British doctor Duncan MacDougall. His observations led him to believe that at the moment a person dies, they lose exactly 21 grams in weight. And he was also convinced that if the soul exists, it must have a weight, just like any other physical matter. How did a theory like that come about? How well was the experiment received? In this final Advent 2025 sermon, we look at a statement made by people who watched Jesus both heal a paralytic and forgive his sin. They said “well we've never seen this before.” And that was true because there has never been nor will there every be a man, who is God, walk this earth who has authority to forgive sin. His name is Jesus, because He came to save His people from their sin.

Jesus earned His reputation - a friend of tax collectors and sinners. This was what was behind the incarnation, He came to seek and save the lost. Wonder what your reputation is?
What would your reaction be if you found yourself suffering because of following Jesus?
Tony begins his advent series in this sermon. He is looking at what various people said about Jesus, in the gospels. Today sermon looks at what The Father said about Jesus and what the demons said about Jesus. Strangely similar but from completely different perspectives.

When someone tells you they can't afford your offer, your brain probably jumps straight to their bank account. But that's not what's really happening. They actually CAN afford it…they're just not sold on your offer. In this week's episode, I'm breaking down the true root of the "I can't afford it" objection and why lowering your price, offering endless payment plans, or changing your offer is only making the problem worse. I talk about: What your leads are actually thinking when they say "I can't afford it" How uncertainty in your energy creates uncertainty in their decision What to shift internally so buyers feel safe saying YES If you want to stop hearing "I can't afford it," this episode will show you exactly where the breakdown is and how to fix it without changing your price, your messaging, or your audience. Because the objection isn't about money. It's about certainty. And that starts with you. Connect with me outside the podcast! Continue the conversation in the Market Like a Boss Facebook group. You know one of our pillars at KKHI for yasty content is when people actually say things. Not political lies or throwing mud... it's when you get something from the inside that you may have thought was true but didn't know for sure. We've got a couple of those today. First, a billionaire confirms something we've all thought about how things are inside Trump's White House. The other, well, it's Gracie Hunt. She has a few words for the Commissioner of the NFL and we LOVE it. For the first time in Patrick Mahomes' Hall of Fame career, he's playing a regular season game that is a "must win." It's true. This Sunday's game against the Colts is almost certainly the difference between turning the corner and making a playoff run that scares the hell out of the AFC, or sliding into the ditch and calling 911. Stan Weber will join us to discuss a matchup he says is really hard for the Chiefs. We'll talk about 2PM's overthrows on deep balls and 4th quarter failures and a really rough schedule this weekend for our college teams. Our Final Final involves bacon that's not for eating. Hmmmmm.

Does a college degree get you anything these days? Some people say no, but the reality is far more complicated. About 19 million people are going to college right now. But one recent poll from Gallup shows that the percentage of Americans who view college as very important is at an all time low, dropping from 75% in 2010 to 35% now. Those who say it's not very important increased from 4% to 24% in the same time period. This is a pretty dramatic change that goes beyond ballooning costs.Brittany chats with Elissa Nadworny, an education correspondent for NPR, and Kathryn Palmer, reporter for Inside Higher Ed, to get into what's behind this changing perception – what politics has to do with it – and whether college is still worth it.Follow Brittany Luse on Instagram: @bmluseFor handpicked podcast recommendations every week, subscribe to NPR's Pod Club newsletter at npr.org/podclub.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
