Josie talks Coronavirus

Josie is the daughter of one of my closest friends. She was terrified of me the first few years of her life, and it destroyed my heart. Then one day she decided I was okay. So now she's nine, and one of my favorite kids, along with her little sister Jessie. Using three-way calling, Josie and I called a few people we know to ask them about their Covid-19 experiences. This was recorded in April 2020, at hopefully the height of the pandemic and physical distancing. Enjoy the conversations, and a very special thank you to Josie, her mom Amy, Simon and his mom Hilary, Claire and her mom Jill, Zoe and her mom Amy, and Kyle and his wife Laura and dog Taylor. My life is richer with all of you in it! Denise Chai is the outreach coordinator for The Storybook Project of Arkansas. From the website: “Our motto was - and is - ‘keeping families connected through reading,’ ” said project founder Pat Oplinger of Cherokee Village. She started Storybook in 1997 with a few other volunteers from a local church. The original purpose, she said, “was to raise the literacy level of both inmates and their children, thus raising education and self confidence levels and family unity.” Gem (Undrea) Jones spent about two decades in prison, and she talks to us a little about what got her there, but mostly about what the Storybook Project meant to her during those years and beyond. Also, check out her Facebook page: What About Us? She gives voice to the voiceless. In our very first podcast episode, we talk to Andrea Zekis, a transgender activist, Clinton School of Public Service student, future (Fall 2019) UA Little Rock law student, Bernie-introducer, appropriate pronoun teacher, and much, much more! www.womenleadarkansas.org https://darylshawn.bandcamp.com/music Uppity Women is hosted by Stephanie Harris, founder of Women Lead Arkansas, a non-partisan nonprofit whose mission is to empower women and girls to engage in politics, policy, and leadership. This podcast is meant to showcase women (and men!) doing cool things; be a place for hard conversations we need to have before we can make progress (race, politics, feminism, etc.); bring people together to figure sh!t out and get stuff done; and generally thumb our noses at anyone who would tell us what we may or may not do as women. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/uppitywomenar/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/uppitywomenar/support
