Just an FYI, that for the foreseeable future we're moving to an every other week type schedule. So this week Michael and Stephanie are discussing a 'hidden' feature in Tesla cars called bidirectional charging. Could this untether us from our current routines? Can robots become roaming chargers? Can you just drive your car up to your lake house off the grid and power it with your vehicle? Michael laments in this episode that he hasn't been starting his car regularly, and sure enough, the battery died. Got one of those portable charger packs off Amazon, and have been making a point to drive it at least every other day now. That was fun. So it turns out that the feature Michael mentioned about the cars showing traffic cones on the display (right) gets tricked by trucks with those hanging testicle ornaments. You just can't ever account for every road circumstance I guess. Please rate and review our show! Share us with a friend. Reach out by email or Twitter and suggest a topic. We love hearing them. Rosalie Li Rodenborn is a graduate student in the Public Health Biology program at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and is here to talk about COVID-19, our latest coronavirus pandemic. We recorded this about a week ago, so Rosalie quotes some numbers here and there that may have gotten updates in the meantime. You can follow her on Twitter or read her blog at NobelProse, or listen to her podcast for updates. Why not all three?  We talk about origins, prevention, and innovative programs that have looked to predict and prevent outbreaks like this. I did NOT make a Corona beer joke, so please send your applause my way.  Rosalie provided an exhaustive list of references, of which I'll mention a few. Stephanie and Michael discuss a few robots, from Amazon's Vesta, to Stop and Shop's Marty, to the mall security robot Knightscope. Is this a slippery slope into giving up even more privacy in public, or are these robots going to be more useful than that?  Marty's in the header image, and here's Yoshi hitching a ride on a Knightscope at a mall in New Jersey. Michael occasionally updates a Tumblr of Yoshi pictures, if that's something you're into. They are usually better than this.  I was going to play some of the AI generated jazz music Stephanie mentioned, but the contact was lost. It was being sent from an A.I. aboard NASA space probe Voyager 3. The same people do have an AI generated Death Metal channel though, if you click through.  Do you want a safety score above your head when you are out in public? Are you a robot that feels you are being maligned? Stephanie and Michael discuss CRISPR, the gene editor, and what it would mean to 'cure' deafness.  Michael has not seen Gattaca, have you? It's available via Amazon Prime Video right now. Michael also hasn't seen Blade Runner, which is the movie he was trying to recall Elon Musk's Neuralink conference can be seen/heard here. I suspect we'll be talking about this soon. And finally, a quote from the book Children of Dune, by Frank Herbert: Natural selection has been described as an environment selectively screening for those who will have progeny. Where humans are concerned, though, this is an extremely limiting viewpoint. Reproduction by sex tends toward experiment and innovation. It raises many questions, including the ancient one about whether environment is a selective agent after the variation occurs, or whether environment plays a pre-selective role in determining the variations which it screens. Dune did not realty answer those questions: it merely raised new questions which Leto and the Sisterhood may attempt to answer over the next five hundred generations. -The Dune Catastrophe, After Harq al-Ada   Like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/youdidwhatnowpodcast Follow Michael on Twitter at @ceetarFollow Stephanie on Twitter at @stephanieydwn RSS subscription links! Stephanie and Michael delve into the idea that our phones are listening to us, recording everything we say, and serving us ads based on those conversations. A correction: Michael mentioned the "wires stopping" on Kauai, but he actually meant the Big Island of Hawaii. Off in the Northwest corner, the wires just end. (See the image on this post) Baader-Meinhof phenomenon is named for a West German terrorist group, in 1994, by a St. Paul Minnesota online commenter, who'd recently heard of the group twice in 24 hours.  Here's an example of how Google photos tries to catalog (blurring is mine) every face you upload. Once I've got those named, I can literally search my photos for "Aunt and Uncle" and get all the pictures with both.  Tell us all about the groups or pages or interests you keep on your digital footprint because you think it'll game the algorithm into giving you a better experience on Twitter with the hashtag #GamingTheAlgorithm. Some notes: This was one of our earlier recorded episodes and the audio quality is less than what's already our usual meh quality. There is only one more like this however, and hopefully they'll be better after that. Which means that Stephanie's segue about Michael's birthday in the intro is waaay out of date.
