The McPlant was McDonald's bid to tap into the fake meat market, where rivals like Burger King have had some success with items like the Impossible Whopper. Crain's reporter Ally Marotti talks with host Amy Guth about how the world's largest hamburger chain ended a U.S. test run in late July, with no indication it will roll out the plant protein burger nationally. Plus: As immigrants arrive in buses from Texas, local health providers say many of those arriving need both immediate care and ongoing attention; Yardbird opening first Chicago location soon in River North; Supersonic jet dealt a blow; and Cresco Labs completes sale-leaseback deal in Pennsylvania to free up $45 million in capital.
There’s a new plant-based player in the game: Burger King. Burger King has added a new chicken sandwich to its lineup, this time made of an Impossible patty. Adding to the chain’s line of Impossible products that already includes the Impossible Whopper and nuggets, this new chicken sandwich also joins the chicken sandwich wars that chains have been waging since the release of the Popeyes chicken sandwich. But now we also have the plant-based wars, with dozens of chains competing to be the first national plant-based chain. Will the big QSR players overtake the market with their own plant-based offerings? Senior editor Ron Ruggless has more on the story. Actor and comedian Kevin Hart has entered the plant-based restaurant war with his newest project: Hart House. The plant-based restaurant in Los Angeles is getting a dose of celebrity from Hart and the backing of legit restaurant folks including the former president of &pizza Andy Hooper and former Burger King chef Mike Salem. Salem famously developed the Impossible Whopper, one of the first plant-based QSR menu items. The hook of Hart House is that its proprietary meats are priced at a reasonable point so it’s affordable to everyone. Here's editorial director Sam Oches with more on Hart House and its new CEO — Hooper. Plus, catch up on all the top news of the day with our daily news recap at the beginning of each episode. Who out there doesn't like Burger King? If you don't, hey! You're not alone. This restaurant (at least the one near our house) is a total mess! My dad was going to call the corporate offices to complain. I'm really not sure if he did yet. But if you dislike Burger King, keep it that away. Nothing to be shameful of. Here are some highlights: 1. In 2015, Mcdonald's was going to make a Mcwhopper with Burger King. Never happened. 2. Burger Kings in New Mexico have terrible and dangerous onion rings. In other words, one customer complained about receiving terrible onion rings in a New Mexico location. We get that BK's are all over (even in London) and they all serve different foods, but this was a big deal; the way it was handled actually just made things worse. According to CBS News, this ended with the manager taking him down with a taser and switchblade!! :( 3. For a while, they advertised sandwiches circumferring to men, which wasn't a good system. At this time, this campaign was very anti-feminist, which wasn't okay. While BK never went that far, they did get close. According to theclever.com, they had certain sandwiches that were aimed at males, with the issue being how unhealthy they actually were. 4. Some customers found some medication in their food. In 2010, two customers each found a mysterious blue pill in their meals after going to BK. One was a 21-year old woman who called the cops after spitting out the painkiller. Another was a 58-year old man who discovered this blue pill in a fish sandwich. 5. One cop claimed an employee put dirt in his burger. Yes, this isn't the only thing being put into BK meals. At one point, a cop in Florida thought there was dirt in a burger he received there. But as it turns out, it was actually seasoning. 6. Sometimes consumers get food with spit on it. Yes, there are some really bad reviews about BK. According to one that was posted on TripAdvisor, someone received some undesired bodily fluids in their food. 7. BK offers a vegan sandwich, but only because of a legal issue they were involved in. A man has issued a lawsuit against BK because he felt the company was misleading consumers by cooking the Impossible Whopper on the same grill where they grill meat, therefore contaminating them with meat. 8. BK never made its nutritional facts public until the 1980s. It's evident enough that BK's food is unhealthy, but before 1985 the people didn't know what they were eating when they went there. That is because the nutritional information about their food was not actually available to the public before then, according to en.wikipedia.org. 9. Burger King basically copies Mcdonald's. The Big King is supposed to be the ripoff version of the world-famous Big Mac. I'd say more, but I assume you've had enough from that one. 10. They got in trouble over the way they advertised their crispy chicken wraps. This is because, in April 2012, they made a commercial with singer/songwriter Mary J. Blige, which had gotten some controversy. 11. They allegedly sold moldy burgers to kids. Yes, I'm not bluffing. They actually did that. In New Zealand, Burger King once served a couple of children something really disgusting and contagious. Their mom claimed after going to the drive-thru, they actually had gotten food that had mold on it. This is serious since mold can be harmful to all souls. 12. It's possible that some of the customers actually consumed horse meat without even knowing it. Sure, BK had been involved in some typical scandals over the years, but the biggest ones had something to do with their meat. This story relates to the 2013 scandal of European locations serving consumers horsemeat. However, the AP made some DNA tests and finally concluded that Burger King found no traces of horsemeat. Yeah, these are true.. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/acnyc/message
This week on Extra Serving, NRN editors discussed Domino’s first domestic same-store sales dip in a decade. More than anything, it’s a sign of the exceptional numbers the chain saw in 2020, as this most recent quarter was 15% up over 2019. Also, McDonald’s is finally testing its plant-based burger in the U.S. The NRN editors discuss what this means for the brand that has notoriously refused to release a plant-based burger “until customers asked for it,” and how it compares to the launch of Burger King’s Impossible Whopper. Lastly, the team discusses Megan Thee Stallion’s investment in Popeyes as a franchisee and the history of musicians and athletes becoming franchisees of restaurant companies. What does it mean that a celebrity is being so vocal about their involvement in a restaurant franchise? Listen to the editors share their thoughts in this episode. Finally, Extra Serving wraps with two interviews. The first is with Dr. James Pogue, an expert on diversity, equity and inclusion. Dr. Pogue spoke at CREATE on a panel about diversity in the workplace and we caught up with him just after the panel to get some more thoughts on the topic. Then, NRN senior food and beverage editor Bret Thorn spoke with Dontre’al Haigler, Denny’s product development chef, about what it’s like to be a corporate chef versus going to culinary school and becoming a working kitchen chef. Also this week on the Last Bite Network, a production of Nation’s Restaurant News and Restaurant Hospitality… Take-Away with Sam Oches aired a mini episode with Damola Adamolekun, CEO of P.F. Chang’s, and another mini episode with Joe Guith, president of Focus Brands. Both were recorded live at CREATE and have interesting insights with the executives. Oches will be back next week with a regular episode of that podcast featuring Luke Holden, founder and CEO of Luke’s Lobster. In the Kitchen with Bret Thorn this week featured restaurateur Sam Fox. Thorn and Fox spoke about Fox’s history and his role as an employee after so many years as being entrepreneur and boss.
August 28, 2019 – Austin, Texas, USA “You met anybody worthwhile lately?” Claire’s friend asked her. “You’re out there on all the apps, aren’t you?” “I wouldn’t exactly say ‘out there.’ More like hanging back, but potentially curious,” said Claire. “Okay, so anyone you’re potentially curious about?” “I don’t know. Teslas crash into emergency vehicles, fake meat explained, the UN Climate Report in depth. Why not every bike light is enough for an e-bike. Brian travels to Winnipeg in his Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus. There were three Super Chargers along the way but he only needed two of them. But what if a Supercharger is not functioning? Is this the new 'range anxiety?' Fortunately Tesla is planning a massive expansion of the Super Charger Network and will include charging for all brands of electric vehicles. Estevan and Saskatoon SuperChargers are under construction and a trip to Edmonton will be possible. James eats The Impossible Burger at home and it was the best burger he's ever had at home! Ever! But he burped afterwards! Brian enjoyed the Impossible Whopper and liked it. What is the best day of the week to release a podcast episode? We have the answer from Libsyn! Undecided with Matt Ferrell does an episode on lab-grown meat and does a great job of giving a primer on the subject. It's real cells from cows replicated! James takes his son for an oil change and finds they want him to change his synthetic oil in 5000 kms! EVs don't have oil to change! A million people have watched Brian's filthy Tesla get detailed on YouTube. We delve into the UN climate report. Climate change is definitely human-caused. 1.5 degrees is inevitable and there's nothing we can do about it even if we stopped adding all carbon today. It would take 30 years for the CO2 to fade away. James's climate pet peeve is that people don't give a crap about their children or their grandchildren. Brian's power bill is low due to rooftop solar. But should the government be involved? James's Prius is costing a lot more to fill up but it's nothing compared to SUVs and pickup trucks. Electric vehicles are cheaper to fuel. The climate has to be addressed now. Fossil fuel companies have to go away. There's no time to waste. We never expected to see actual evidence of climate change this early in our lives. Oil and Gas hires people to object to clean energy. 20 locals were organized to push for near zero emission trucks at the port of L.A. In other words they wanted natural gas trucks instead of battery electric. The participants were told it was to protest for green activities. Hydrogen study shows that even with carbon capture from the burning of natural gas, blue hydrogen is more carbon intensive than just burning natural gas. The anti-carbon tax Canadian provinces are jonesing for small scale modular nuclear because it annoys the hippies. But is nuclear actually necessary to solve our climate problem if you look at the projected costs of solar, wind and storage. The first plant won't be operational until after 2030 and by then green energy will be so cheap they'll give it away. Which they're doing now in the U.K. for EV drivers when there's extra power. (00:00-09:57): According to the Washington Post, Donald Trump, in just over 900 days, has spoken over 12,000 inaccuracies. Brian and Ian touch on this and talk about inflammatory things spoken both by and ABOUT the president. (09:57-19:23): What does Jesus’ actions and words say about violence? We touched on the various moments in Jesus’ ministry years where he succumbed to violence and let it happen. Should we behave the same way, or is violence sometimes the answer? (19:23-28:32): Burger King is selling the “Impossible Whopper” made without any meat. Brian and Ian cringed at the thought of it, but Televangelist Rick Wiles thinks there is something even darker behind the meatless patty. (28:32-37:30): Boy chooses to wear ‘I will be your friend’ shirt for first day of elementary school. He had the choice of any shirt, and he chose this one. We touch on the power of kindness and how this act turned out to be more contagious than expected. (37:30-48:07): Shame, The Image Of God, And Gaining Freedom To Love. Scott Sauls writes about how we have nothing to be ashamed of because Jesus took on the shame of the world. We have nothing to be ashamed of anymore, we are equal, we are children of God. (48:07-58:47): Allie Casazza writes “Why I Let My Kids Feel the Weight of the World”. This compelling piece describes how parents ought to instill the responsibility of changing the world on children. Brian and Ian touch on this and reflect as parents how they try to do the same. (58:47-1:09:08): While it is important to apologize for doing someone wrong, there is more to redemption kids ought to know. Brian and Ian touch on this article by Michelle Woo on what else kids could do besides “say sorry”. (1:09:08-1:15:50): Brian and Ian’s “Weird Stuff We Found on the Internet”: Video killed...absolutely nothing, but is leaving TV’s for people. I’m not going to say it was aliens, but Bernie certainly will. If you enter a cafe and there are insects on your plate...Amazon Alexa is now a viable weapon. Meanwhile, with rising gas prices, folks are resorting to...FRYING...their engines.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
