Our guest Chris Hooper, at the time of this interview, was the CEO of Accodex. Unfortunately, Accodex has since gone into liquidation and we feel it’s important to show this interview because it highlights the rollercoaster that is entrepreneurship and how real it can be. Chris Hooper is an accounting futurist who believes that accountants can change the world! He is passionate about helping small business owners and he was one of South Australia’s inaugural Top 40 under 40 Business Leaders last year. Chris Hooper from Accodex joined us for this episode of Life In Accounting, the Where Accountants Go podcast.  In addition to being one of the most entrepreneurial guests we have had in a while, Chris lives in Adelaide, Australia, which makes him our first international guest for the show! Making money vs. keeping money Chris always had an interest in business, and happened on accounting as a career by necessity.  After starting his own business in the fitness industry, he quickly realized that keeping money wasn't as easy as making it, and therefore it would be a good idea to become more educated in that area.  It was at that point that a friend introduced him to accounting. Not your “typical” accountant Chris seems to have always been a “people person”.  From his early self-employment days, to his extra-curricular activities in college, and now to building the Accodex network, it's evident that he enjoys building relationships.  In addition, he definitely enjoys improving on how business is done.  While Chris definitely has the technical abilities that come with a background in accounting, he sees accounting more as the means to the end… an end of creating improvement in business. Just the beginning Something else that was evident in this interview was that even with all the ground that we covered, this is only the beginning.  Chris is 33 years old, and Accodex is only 4 years old.  While they have seen fast success, it's truly only starting to scratch the surface of what is possible.  In Chris' words, “…accountants have the ability to change the world…”, and it's obvious that Chris has that intention for himself and his companies as well. How the greatest accountants a very keen sense of intuition when it comes to numbers and financials. Great accounting firms are well positioned, tech-savvy, have a fresh brand, a strong marketing presence and a few more things… Democracy is a fallacy in many in large accounting firms, yet strong leadership and direction from the top is essential. The biggest challenge for large accounting firms is the pace at which they move – it’s very difficult to elicit change in big firms. Big firms that survive and thrive will be able to master the fast moving technological landscape. Technology is driving the the imperative for change, and every change management plan is cultural. Tip to get people acclimatize to big change – make small changes constantly so staff are comfortable with the uncomfortable. Disappointment with audit – there should have been more innovation and time-centric software over recent years. The common denominator in successful firms is brand advocacy – everyone in the firm should be proactive about business development. Changing accountant happens much more readily these days because the switching costs and time delays are much lower. ‘The end is nigh’ mantra has been overplayed in the accounting world. Disruption, yes, but not demise! Accounting firms that do not manage change will struggle with recruiting talent and succession. Top 100 accounting firms should ask themselves: ‘what are we doing to entice the young employees to stay here?’  Hiring good people is always a battle. You hire for attitude, you train for skills. The importance of training cannot be underplayed – it’s one of the main things millennial accountants are looking or in their career. Accounting firms that have adopted cloud and are 100 per cent paperless have a huge advantage in the marketplace.       Shamal Asnani started his career at the age of 18 and found his footing in accounting by helping his family with bookkeeping which led him into understanding the needs of small businesses. From there he moved into public accounting at small to large firms where he started to feel something was just slightly off. The numbers all made sense but the culture was terribly wrong, and anyone who knows that environment could understand that crunching numbers while feeling crunched in a chair doesn't exactly go together.       Shamal at that point branched off into Accodex a Partner firm for CPA's and soon realized that the feeling was mutual for both him and people who worked with accountants. The standard method of communication and work culture as he continued to find his was in Accounting privately was far from the most helpful way to help small businesses and entrepreneurs and as he continued to consult them found a much more beneficial process.       Working with Shamal isn't going to be your A typical experience with a CPA unless you're idea was already that you would be able to feel free to crack fitness jokes or text them about ways to save while you're on vacation. Early in his life, Chris began to see accounting as the language of business and despite having had success as an accountant, he realized that his business could not scale beyond him. The company he is building is called Accodex. Accodex is disrupting what some describe as the most boring profession in the world, Accounting. He is building a company to avoid what he calls the Accounting Apocalypse.Chris noticed that just as the innovation of the double entry accounting had revolutionized Accounting, there were new trends that were also about to disrupt the field of accounting. His company Accodex, his striving to be a platform to support the future accounting. Although it is often described as Uber for accounting, the analogy does not fit well. If Uber gave you the same driver each time, and spent time ensuring that you trusted the driver, then that would be Accodex.The company Chris is building is based on the insights he gained while studying the history of Accounting during his MBA. He noticed four trends that were changing the future of Accounting:Changing labour force dynamics and expectationsTechnological changeGlobalizationsChanging expectations of owners and entrepreneursDriven by the entrepreneurial bug, he set himself on a journey to build a company that met his needs as an accountant. He built a company to satisfy his own needs.One of my favourite insights from Chris was his use of the analogy of sailing a ship. What I love about this analogy is that it acknowledges the uncertainty involved in building a business. It acknowledges that we all have limited control as we try to build the future.Chris is ambitious and wants to build a company that last well beyond his lifetime. Very few companies make it past forty years. What I admire about him, is that once he noticed that there was incongruence between what he was doing and what he wanted to be doing, he took the time to fundamentally shift his course. This is a common theme among people I interview on Disruptive Conversations.Being an entrepreneur is hard work, and Chris suggests that entrepreneurs need to believe that the fight is worth fighting for. They need to be so committed to it that they're almost willing to die for it. If you believe that fight is worth fighting for, then fight relentlessly. Chris believes in hard work. Sammie Johannes has been weight training since she was 16 years old. Her classes ended sooner than her younger brother’s, so she would spend that time at the gym next door, working with dumbbells and doing some kickboxing. Now, she’s placing in powerlifting competitions and hitting milestone lifts in bench, squat, and very close to this in dead lift. Some of her colleagues have even come to support her at these competitions while she proudly wears her firm’s shirt. In this episode, Sammie and I talk about how her powerlifting has given her more patience and resilience. Training doesn’t always go according to plan and constructive feedback is taken much better after being coached in the gym. The atmosphere at Accodex allows her to be able to talk about her powerlifting, even being encouraged by one of the founding partners to have a flexible schedule if training needs to happen during the day. But it’s not just sharing you’re your hobby or passion, Sammie adds, "It’s important we also share the why for our hobbies and passions."

Chris Hooper's story is a real love affair with business. Recognising accounting as "the language of business", he started his own firm six years ago. Then two years ago, Accodex was born, which is now an international company with multiple locations in four different countries. Headquartered in Adelaide, it's a real SA success story. Describing himself as an entrepreneur first, and an accountant second. Chris Hooper took the roundabout way into accounting -- from wrestling promoter at the age of 13 to power lifting competitor to entrepreneur. He'd always been good at making money, but never good at keeping it, so he figured he needed to study up on accounting. And the rest is history. While he isn't competing anymore, he still lifts regularly, sometimes even with clients. In this episode, we talk about how Chris works hard to make Accodex a refuge for really good accountants who also have passions outside the office. While this might be frowned upon at larger firms, he embraces and encourages it. He stays in constant contact with all the staff but also schedules quarterly meetings with every individual. His goal is to have short-term productivity but long-term engagement from his team, so he works hard to align their personal goals with those of the firm. The question that he asks everyone is, "What's your dream job and what can we do for you to help you get there?"
