More on Lindsey & Gianna: Lindsey is from Kyle,Texas and played collegiate golf at Southern Methodist University... She loves being able to travel and meet new people through professional golf... Hobbies include spending time with friends and family and going camping in her RV... If she weren't a professional golfer, she'd be a college golf coach. Gianna known worldwide as “The One Handed Lady Golferwas born in 1962 in Bath, Maine. Gianna has a challenge, she was born without fingers on her left hand. Episode 056 -- Thoughts on Luke Perry and Stroke

Strokecast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 8, 2019 14:23

This week, we learned about the tragic death of Luke Perry. He suffered a stroke at age 52 and did not survive. This sparked comments across social media that many of us have had to address only in personal conversations before. Namely: "I thought you had to be old to have a stroke!" Those of us who spend a lot of time dealing with and thinking about stroke know that is completely untrue. But most folks are not part of our community, and it takes a major celebrity death to really get people to think about it. My hope is that some good can come from this. If Luke Perry's death inspires more folks to check and know their risk factors, that's a good thing. If it encourages more folks to know the BEFAST warning signs of stroke, that is also a good thing. There's the potential for Luke Perry's death to save the lives of hundreds or thousands of other people by driving increased awareness and response to stroke and its causes. How Can You Help? Media attention can be fleeting so now is the time to take action. Are you involved with a school, community, civic, or religious organization that brings in speakers? Ask them to invite a stroke survivor or medical professional to talk to the group about their story and share more info on stroke recognition and prevention.  If you don't know anyone personally who can speak, reach out. If your group meets in the Puget Sound area of Western Washington, let me know and I'll be happy to talk to your group or connect you with someone else who can. In other areas, reach out to your local chapter of the American Heart Association. They can help. Or search through Facebook forums or Twitter hashtags (like #stroke or #stroke survivor). Or contact your local hospital and ask them if they know of someone Do you want to share your story? Reach out to groups or schools who may want a speaker. Contact the American Heart Association or your country's equivalent, and let them know. Start a podcast, YouTube channel, Instagram account or build your own stage another way. Reach out to other stroke survivor podcasters who may be looking for guests, like Cam at the Hand in Hand Show or Joe at NeuroNerds. Or me here. Distribute and promote the BEFAST warning signs. The point is, now is the time to talk about it. Hack of the Week I keep an umbrella stand near the door, but I don't fill it with umbrellas. We're not big umbrella people here in Seattle. Plus, the hand I would use to hold an umbrella is busy holding my cane. And my girlfriend won't let me be seen in public wearing a head-mounted umbrella. Which is probably a good call. That's why my umbrella stand is filled with canes. It's a great way to store them. I can grab a different one as I head out the door, depending on my mood, goals, and wardrobe that day. And when I'm not using one, I keep it safely out of the way. Program Note There will not be a new episode next week (2019-03-15) because I'll be out of town on my 7th JoCo Cruise. I'd rather not rush the post production on that episode so I'm taking next week off.  The next episode of Strokecast will go live on Friday, March 22. lt will feature Gianna Rojas -- the One Handed Lady Golfer talking about how she helps stroke survivors get back on the golf course and reconnect with their passion for the game. “We are all golfers first. Adaptive golfers just happen to have unique, special needs. (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Gianna-Head-Shot-with-hand.jpg) Gianna Rojas Adaptive Golf Advocate Oak Ridge, New Jersey Born without fingers on her left hand, Gianna Rojas is known world-wide as the “One-Handed Lady Golfer,” and she has dedicated much of her recent life to bringing attention to golfing success stories that involve people with physical, cognitive, sensory, health and age-related challenges. Gianna is recognized as one of the leading and most influential voices in a growing movement that’s called “Adaptive Golf,” which is working to promote accessibility to the game of golf for everyone. Gianna was recently named by the LPGA as one of the top 22 Women “Disruptors” in the golf industry. And you might think that she has a body double…because Gianna is everywhere…including the Golf Channel, local and national news, and as guest speaker at a broad range of industry and corporate events, including the PGA Merchandise Show and the Abilities Expo. Gianna is an active member of organizations too numerous to mention, where she collaborates and sits on several committees. (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Gianna-with-David-Finn.jpg) Gianna Rojas with the legendary “Golf Fanatic” David Finn In addition to all of her advocacy work, Giana is a bona fide golfer. She walks the talk as an Adaptive Athlete. For example, she is a member of the US Disabled Golf Team and is a two-time division winner in the Adaptive and Para Long Drive competition. We have a very selfish reason for featuring Gianna as a guest on Golf Yeah. This is a podcast for people who aspire to build a business or career related to their love for the game golf. Gianna certainly has achieved that goal through her Adaptive Golfers organization. But what’s even more valuable than her success story, which you’ll hear, is Gianna discussion of what it takes to overcome the obstacles in your head and in your heart that keep you from reaching your full potential. Regardless of whether your life goals involve a golf career, or simply being a happier person, you’ll find Gianna’s spirit and determination to be contagious. Show Highlights:   How Gianna serves as an advocate for changing people’s mindsets, regardless of their abilities   The social and personal challenges Gianna faced in her childhood   The backstory on how Gianna became involved in the game of golf   How Gianna developed her unique method of swinging a golf club   How and why she founded her “Adaptive Golfers” organization Efforts to coordinate the various causes related to adaptive golf Challenges involved in getting PGA pros to teach people with unique needs Collecting data on different courses to determine mobility   Difficulties involved in convincing people that golf is accessible and therapeutic The importance of empowering people to help themselves Finding a way to accomplish personal goals despite significant challenges Why people with challenges should be apart of the effort to help others with adaptive abilities Notable Quotes:    On the definition of herself, and how she wants to be known: “I am differently abled, not “dis”abled. I am not defined by my lack of limb deficiency. I am a whole person, a whole-hearted person…and that is what I present to the world.” On using a prosthetic device to swing the golf club:   “For me to add something to my hand is the same as you losing something from your hand.”   On incenting people to try golf:   “If we find something people like to do, then they’ll find a reason to move”   On her outlook on life:   “We were not put here to be isolated and depressed.”   On golf course adoption of design changes to accommodate adaptive golfers: “We are still in the...

At a young age, Gianna had to learn how to build rapport and new friendships with the other kids very quickly before the family moved on to their next station. For Gianna of Oak Ridge, NJ, no obstacle is too daunting to tackle. Having been born without fingers on her left hand, Gianna is known as the “one-handed lady golfer.” She strives to bring attention to golfing success stories of people with physical challenges, and by sharing her story she hopes to inspire others who may question their abilities. Gianna began playing golf nearly ten years ago as a way to experience the game her husband deeply loves. After learning how to adapt her swing to her disability, Gianna developed a passion for golf and recognized an opportunity to advocate for others through her participation in the sport. At a young age, Gianna was the poster child for the March of Dimes, and today she works for the organization as the Community Director in their Parsippany, NJ, office. Also, she is a member of numerous women- and golf-focused charitable organizations, and recently founded Adaptive Golfers, a nonprofit that brings the game of golf to people with different abilities. Gianna will celebrate her 4th year as a volunteer at The Barclays when the PGA TOUR tournament is held at the Black Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, NY, from August 23-28, 2016. During the tournament, Gianna will assist as a course marshal at hole 10, a spot she looks forward to returning to each year, as she has developed friendships with the volunteers who are assigned to her area.  As a marshal, her primary role is crowd control. Also, she will help keep the pace of play up and respond to golfers' questions or concerns. “Volunteering with the PGA TOUR is exciting because it allows an up-close look at professional golf, but even more importantly, it is rewarding because it presents an opportunity to support charity and make lasting friendships,” said Gianna. “As a volunteer, I have the chance to make someone’s experience memorable, and that could be a player, a fan, another volunteer or staff member. I feel it is a privilege to share in the experience.” So, when Gianna learned of an opportunity to enhance her tournament experience and support charity through the PGA TOUR Volunteer Challenge, sponsored by Myrbetriq® (mirabegron), she jumped at the chance to participate. Tournament volunteers, like Gianna, are participating in the Volunteer Challenge, a friendly competition designed to raise funds for non-profit organizations while recognizing the talent, passion and commitment of PGA TOUR volunteers in communities nationwide. The Barclays is one of 16 tournaments hosting the Volunteer Challenge during the 2016 season. As part of the program, volunteers ask friends and family to vote at PGATOUR.com/volunteers, and when voting ends on August 27, the volunteer with the most votes will earn the chance to present a $10,000 check to The First Tee of Metropolitan New York. In addition, $5,000 will be donated to the winner’s charity of choice (Gianna would designate the funds to March of Dimes), and top-ranking tournaments can earn additional charitable funds based on the total number of votes earned collectively by volunteers and the tournament – up to $60,000.
