I am an Assistant Professor of Economics at the School of Business at Farmingdale State College (SUNY). I received my PhD in Economics from Fordham University. My research interests lie at the intersection of international trade and development and my research agenda is twofold – one, I am interested in looking at the impact of international trade policies on developing and least developed countries. And two, knowing that even the most development friendly trade policies have to be backed by a robust domestic infrastructure, I investigate the impact of various capacity constraints on firms' performance, again in the context of developing and least developed countries. I have taught undergraduate economics for several years at Fordham and continue to do so at Farmingdale. Teaching across multiple modalities (in person and online synchronous and asynchronous), encouraging active learning, student engagement and connecting economic theory to its real world applications are the guiding principles of my teaching practice. I also volunteer as a co-lead organizer of the mentoring program for Trade Experettes called the Mentorettes. The mentoring program is set up with the objective of providing career guidance to women interested in starting a career in international trade or making a pivot within their established careers or just looking for upward or broader growth. Nassau County Supreme Court Judge Robert A. McDonald has handed down a 25-years-to-life sentence to 30-year-old Michael Owen for the 2020 slaying of his estranged wife, 27-year-old Kelly Owen, who was pregnant at the time. The verdict came after a Nassau County jury convicted Owen on one count of second-degree murder in July 2023. Authorities revealed that Michael and Kelly Owen, who had married in 2013 and separated in March 2018, continued a physical relationship. However, their interactions turned violent, leading to their eventual separation. The situation escalated when Kelly informed Michael about her pregnancy with their second child. Facing financial troubles and involved in a new relationship, Michael Owen expressed his reluctance to have another child and, specifically, did not want to bear the financial burden of the new baby's medical insurance. Determined to avoid these responsibilities, he drove to Kelly's apartment on January 15, 2020, with the intention of killing her. Kelly Owen, a nursing student and mother to a 6-year-old son shared with Michael, was found dead in her Farmingdale apartment later that day. The autopsy revealed that she had been strangled to death with a "rope-like object" and was in the early stages of pregnancy. Nassau police Det. Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick stated, "He did not want this child. He did not want to give her medical insurance. He had this new relationship he was involved in, and he was in a bad position." Surveillance footage placed Michael Owen in the victim's neighborhood around the time of her death, where he had deliberately made his cellphone location undetectable. Despite attempts to conceal his presence, authorities recovered Owen's DNA from the area around the victim's neck. Following his arrest later that month, Michael Owen faced charges of murder, and the recent sentencing ensures he will spend 25 years to life in a state correctional facility. Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly expressed sympathy for Kelly's family, stating, "Michael Owen stole those dreams, and now he will pay for his crimes in prison. Our thoughts remain with Kelly's family as they continue to mourn her loss." Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Today on Long Island tea, Kristen and Sharon are continuing wellness month by talking about some more unconventional and fun forms of wellness. Kristen reads her horoscope and Sharon manifests the phrase “onward and upward.” They talk about their weeks and briefly touch on what's going on with Nassau County choosing to no longer be a part of the Long Island brand that Discover Long Island has built and what exactly that means. The ladies are sipping on the classic Pindar Winter White, one of Long Island's most popular wines. It's an off-dry blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Cayuga. Kristen bought a new couch and Sharon tells a horror story of ordering a couch online. Then the ladies talk about about items they have picked up from the curb. *HOTTEAS- let us know on Instagram or TikTok- what is the best thing you've ever gotten from the curb? "The Farmingdale Incident and Jezebel Spirits in KY" / Johnny Ova & Jeff / Mike Beavers / Omegaman Episode 29
On Wednesday October 9th, 1957 at 8PM eastern time, The Bill Kemp Show took to the air over ABC. Bill Kemp was born on July 10th, 1921 in Toronto, Canada. An up and coming performer in the 1950s, his daily radio show ran weeknights at 8PM. His show was the final in a twelve-hour daily live broadcast project by ABC called “The Live and Lively Radio Network.” ABC's intention was to raise ratings by going back to live broadcasts in an era of taped shows. Interestingly, it was ABC that helped launch the non-Mutual Broadcasting transcribed primetime era with Bing Crosby's Philco Radio Time in 1946. Kemp's show featured an orchestra, vocalist and guest stars such as Jonathon Winters. Kemp's announcer George Ansbro remembered that Kemp once went laugh for laugh with Winters after a particularly successful broadcast, and continued the antics all the way to a nearby steakhouse. Unfortunately, Kemp also developed a debilitating drinking problem. Merv Griffin and Jim Backus were called on several occasions to cover for Kemp during absences for "personal reasons." One week after this broadcast on Wednesday October 16th, Queen Elizabeth II departed from Ottawa and arrived in Williamsburg, Virginia. The next day she was in Washington, D.C. While at the White House, Prince Philip received the gold medal of the National Geographic Society. On October 18th, two U.S. Navy balloonists flew to an altitude of sixteen miles, landing near Hermansville, Michigan. On October 19th, the Queen and Prince Philip attended an American football game in College Park, Maryland, and then visited a supermarket in West Hyattsville. That same day a beauty pageant winner was killed en route to her coronation in a helicopter crash in Farmingdale, New York, while Montreal Canadiens' star Maurice “The Rocket” Richard became the first player in National Hockey League history to score five-hundred career goals.
Today on Long Island Tea, Sharon and Kristen are at Long Island's iconic theme park, Adventureland in Farmingdale, and they have the whole park to themselves! The Adventureland season is winding down, but not without first celebrating Halloween at “Pumpkin Park” Adventureland's safe trick or treating event October 21st and 22nd. It's last big event before Adventureland closes for the season, and you don't want to miss it! Kristen recaps the NYSHTA conference in Lake Placid and LIBDC event in Montauk. They also talk about upcoming industry events including the Long Island Association Luncheon with guest speaker David Beckham. For Taste of Long Island, the ladies are sipping on Adventureland's own “A-Land Honey Ale” made by Oyster Bay Brewing company, and a warm fresh pretzel to go with it. They also talk about the Powerball jackpot, Long Island events this weekend, a couple of ChariTEAs (details below) and Long Island Tea's new TikTok account. They end the show with an awesome *GIVEAWAY*- win a family 4 pack to the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze in Old Bethpage. Our second part of the "Home" micro-theme series is especially poignant today as The SPEAK™ Podcast dedicates this episode to our very own home. SPEAK™ is headquartered in Farmingdale, New York, a suburb of New York City located on Long Island. On September 21, Farmingdale suffered a tremendous tragedy as a bus that was headed to its annual band camp event in Pennsylvania was involved in a terrible accident where two lives were lost, dozens of students were injured, and a community was broken. As Farmingdale is our own home, we felt this was the perfect episode to publish this particular week. SPEAK™ stands #DalerStrong with the rest of our community. We're featuring talks from some of our recent pop-up events: Love, Homecoming, and Heritage.
