In our latest episode, we review the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Assignment: Earth". Though we are temporarily sidetracked by our fascination with the cat named ISIS, we get into all the details of Gary Seven and what could have been.

Assignment: Earth was the twenty sixth episode of Star Trek's second season to air, with an intergalactic secret agent battling to stop a twentieth century nuclear holocaust. In this episode Gerry and Iain discussed the appropriate clothing for time travellers. On a mission to observe a key period of Earth history, the Enterprise intercepts Gary Seven (Robert Lansing) and his cat Isis as they attempt to travel to the planet from a distant world. Seven makes his escape and heads to the United States where a critical weapons launch is due to take place. Despite interference from Seven's secretary Roberta Lincoln (Terri Garr), Kirk and Spock make it to the launch site where they are waylaid by Launch Commander Cromwell (Don Keefer) and others as they attempt to stop the sabotage Seven says is vital to Earth's survival. Assignment: Earth was directed by Marc Daniels, the thirteenth of his fourteen episodes in the chair. The writer was Art Wallace, the second of his two scripts for the show. Obsession was the thirteenth episode of Star Trek's second season to air, with Kirk embarking on a revenge mission at the risk of failing to carry out his original mission and potentially killing his entire crew. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss vengeance and when it's best to let things go. When Kirk identifies the presence of a cloud monster that killed his first captain his instincts tell him he must take the opportunity to strike down the creature while he can. Leaning on Ensign Garrovick (Stephen Brooks), the son of his lost captain, Kirk must face his own demons before he's ready to put an end to the enemy he pursues. Obsession was directed by Ralph Senensky, the fourth of his seven Star Trek episodes. The writer was Art Wallace, the first of his two scripts for the series. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered a sickly sweet odour that seemed to fill the room. It’s the Star Trek episode that isn’t quite Star Trek. At the end of the second season of TOS Gene Roddenberry, with the help of writer Art Wallace, reworked an unsucessful pilot script entitled “Assignment: Earth” hoping it would serve as a springboard for a new series.

The show was created by Dan Curtis, who tells of a dream he had in which a girl takes a long train ride to visit a large mansion. The story "bible", which was written by Art Wallace, does not mention any supernatural elements. It was considered daring (and unprecedented in daytime television) when ghosts were introduced about six months after it began. The series became hugely popular when, a year into its run, vampire Barnabas Collins, played by Jonathan Frid, appeared. In addition to vampires, Dark Shadows featured werewolves, ghosts, zombies, man-made monsters, witches, warlocks, time travel, both into the past and into the future, and a parallel universe.

Major writers in addition to Art Wallace included Sam Hall, Gordon Russell, and Violet Welles. Dark Shadows has the distinction of being the only long-running soap to have every episode released for home video (including a reconstruction episode #1219, the videotape for which is lost), first on VHS and currently in progress on DVD. (Episodes were numbered from #1 to #1245, but some episodes were pre-empted due to holidays, news, etc. so the number of episodes actually broadcast is 1225.) Dark Shadows was distinguished by its vividly melodramatic performances, atmospheric interiors, memorable story lines and an unusually adventurous music score.
