In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode Bread and Circuses, which aired on March 29, 1968, and occurred on Star Date Unknown. The Enterprise has used the light-speed breakaway factor to propel itself backward in time. It can monitor Earth communications while on a historical fact-finding mission to study how Earth survived the turbulent year 1968. While in orbit, the Enterprise accidentally intercepts a transporter beam originating more than 1000 light years away, beaming aboard interplanetary agent Gary Seven and his partner Isis, disguised as a black cat. His mission is to prevent Earth from destroying itself before it can become a peaceful society by destroying an orbital nuclear weapons platform launched by the US. Chekov notes the arming of the warhead aboard the Enterprise, who attempts to contact Kirk for instructions. When the communicator beeps and the rocket base guard picks it up, Spock nerve pinches the guard and tells Scott to beam Kirk and himself to Seven's apartment. Here, they watch Seven explode the warhead 104 miles above the ground and meet Seven's cat, Isis. Records from the Enterprise show that such an event occurred and that it caused the nuclear powers to re-assess the risks of placing hydrogen bombs in orbit. Compliance Takeaways: 1. "Now hear this. Now hear this. On this week's episode of Kirking Off, Kirk and his gallant crew decide to head back to 1968 to do some historical research, and it is here that they meet Gary Seven, an intergalactic man of mystery who tells the captain that he has come to save humanity from itself. But what if Mr. Seven is there - with his 'totally perfect body' - to change history for the worse? Could he be an evil alien bent on destroying humanity? Lots covered this week, and most of it is tangential to the episode. Nate and Dean get into: television versus movie stars, professional athlete pay scales, the proposed Gary Seven tv show, old-timey misogyny, science and technology outpacing social and political growth, and understanding the improving quality of life throughout history. Time for me to step aside and work on my gratitude list, so we can get on with the episode. We present to you, Operation Earth, from Star Trek: The Original Series." When the Enterprise travels back in time to the year 1968 to observe how Earth survived desperate measures without destroying itself, it intercepts a transporter beam of a man in a 20th Century business suit — plus his cat. The mysterious stranger calls himself Gary Seven, and he claims to be on a mission to save mankind from itself so it can eventually evolve into a peaceful society. Captain Kirk finds that hard to believe, but when Mister Seven escapes to the planet's surface with the intention of sabotaging the launch of an orbiting nuclear platform, Kirk and Spock must decide whether they should try to stop him or let him carry out his mission — and every second they delay could have catastrophic repercussions on Earth's future and the fate of the human race. Season 2 of “Star Trek” came to a close with “Assignment: Earth,” which was originally intended to be a pilot for a new television series. The pilot didn't sell, and although it feels at times like Kirk and Spock are guest stars on their own show, “Assignment: Earth” still fits the bill as a unique, entertaining and suspenseful episode that features standout performances from Robert Lansing and Teri Garr, the latter of whom would soon gain greater fame for starring in the likes of “Young Frankenstein,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “Tootsie,” among many other iconic movies. Waaaaah! Ziemlich viele neue Vorfahren heute!
Star Trek's backdoor pilots. The year is 1968. As Star Trek goes off the air for good, a new show—Assignment: Earth—debuts from some of the same creative team. For dedicated Trekkies, the premise is already familiar and the two leads, Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln, have a head start garnering fans of their own. That, at least, is what might have been had Star Trek not been renewed for a third season. As things turned out, the episode featuring Seven and Lincoln was simply the finale of Star Trek's second-season, not the series, and “Assignment: Earth” was never picked up as a show in its own right. In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Tony Black for a look at Star Trek's most famous backdoor pilot, an episode that lays out the premise for a potential future show, using the budget and production infrastructure of an existing one. “Assignment: Earth” might be Star Trek's most blatant use of this sneaky approach, but more recent examples include “Point of Light,” “Terra Firma,” and “All Is Possible.” These three installments of Star Trek: Discovery seem to hint pretty strongly at shows that might be coming down the pipe. And then there's Discovery's entire second season, which set up not only Strange New Worlds—and introduced new actors in the roles of Captain Pike, Spock, and the original Number One—but the long-awaited Section 31 show as well. What are the benefits—and pitfalls—of taking the backdoor route to a new project? And do such stories inevitably struggle to function as episodes of two different shows simultaneously? “Watcher” What kind of ship is the La Sirena? It's a ship with a missing man. And while Seven and Raffi search Los Angeles for Rios, Jean-Luc heads to Forward Avenue in search of Guinan, who he believes is the Watcher. Only we find out that isn't the case. She sends Picard to a Supervisor, throwing an unexpected, yet classic, twist into the story. And while all this is happening, the Borg Queen continues to flirt with Agnes back in France. In this episode of The Artificial Tango, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing discuss “Watcher,” the fourth episode of Star Trek: Picard Season 2. We speculate on why Guinan doesn't recognize Jean-Luc, why the Borg Queen has such interest in Jurati, what is happening to Q, and why Kirk Thatcher still hates us. We also talk about time and why we feel it has been shattered, Seven's driving skills and, of course, the reveal of the Watcher, their apparent connection to Gary Seven, and why their identity means so much to the story. WE'RE BACK! It's been several months since we had any new Star Trek comics to discuss, but, IDW has dropped a few for us to look at. Star Trek Year Five, the ongoing montly series, has dropped issue #11 and #12. The Enterprise is on her way home, when, a "friend" from the past shows up. Gary Seven and Isis have a mission that isn't what Kirk and crew expected. This time they find themselves working against this old" friend".
Crisis on Infinite Loises, A Kent family reunion, the Terrifics tap out on paper, Johns is too busy on Stargirl to get his own comic out, Buffy and Cordelia sittin’ in a tree, the return of Gary Seven, and Distribution Wars--they have begun.
• Online beszélgetés zajlott a Voyager színészeivel a 25. évfordulón. A kibeszélő tartalmából: • A történet eredetileg egy új sorozat pilotja lett volna. Mivel a Star Trek a megszűnés határán egyensúlyozott, Roddenberry remélte, hogy végső esetben ezzel a sorozattal készülhet az őszi szezonra. • Háttérszervezetek és titkosügynökök a sorozatokban: a téma népszerűsége miatt talán Gary Seven történetei is sikeresek lehettek volna, a karakter küldetései a képernyő helyett azonban képregényekben folytatódtak.
A ’Project Daedalus’ című Discovery epizódról beszélgetünk. - Ira Steven Behr Deep Space Nine dokumentumfilmje forgalmazóra talált: a HD jeleneteket tartalmazó produkciót a nagyvásznon is bemutatják. - A különleges vulkáni: miért lett Spock a Vörös Angyal kiszemeltje? Hogyan számolt le a mesterséges intelligencia a szekciót irányító admirálisokkal? - A gépek öntudatra ébredése: a mesterséges intelligenciák fejlődésénél az emberi tényező kiiktatása mindig szükségszerű? - Bujkálás és zendülés a jó célért: Cornwell admirális végre a jó oldalhoz csatlakozik? Miért maradt távol Pike a klingon háborútól?

This week I pass through 4D Man, a cheesy 50's scifi flick about Gary Seven from Star Trek learning the fine art of phasing through solid steel and other even stronger and faker metals, which like all mad science experiments of the era, instantly makes him evil for no apparent reason. This one was a bit of a slog and you can hear the frustration in my voice as I try to milk even an hour's worth of podcast about it. You might say it was immaterial. If you were a fucking asshole you might say that.Download HERE or on Itumes HERE

Paul Resnikoff - Founder, Digital Music News Season 2/ Episode 5 The second season finale of the original Star Trek back in 1969 was an odd episode. You will see where I am going with this in a moment..... Yes, Kirk and Spock are in the top of the show, Kirk and Spock are at the close of the show, but the meat of the show, the entire episode, is taken up with the story of some guy named - "Gary Seven." Gary Seven is a human who, as it turns out, was kidnapped by aliens and sent back to earth to protect us from... whatever, that's not the point... The point is (and was), Gene Roddenberry was using one show - Star Trek, to promote another show, in this case, a show about some guy named - Gary Seven. (In the end the show, something of a Doctor Who Ripoff, never got picked up and the whole affair is now nothing more than a fantastic bit of a Star Trek Trivia... but, again, that's not the point.) So with all that in mind you will notice that Jeff and I are in the top of today's show, we are in the close of the close of today's show, but the meat of the episode, most of this show is taken up by a guy named Paul Resnikoff. Paul Resnikoff is no Gary Seven. Paul created and runs - Digital Music News (www.digitalmusicnews.com), the most comprehensive and up to date site on the current state of Digital Music. "Digital Music News is the information authority for music industry and technology executives." We’re a highly influential source of news and industry analysis for millions of readers worldwide. Our audience is comprised of highly-targeted decision-makers from every segment of the business, including recordings, publishing, streaming, live concerts, talent development, venture capital, and broader tech. Digital Music News Gary Seven Paul also happens to run a podcast of the same name, and if you like 21Khz, you'll love the Digital Music News podcast. This particular episode we're sharing focuses on the lawsuit surrounding, "Blurred Lines." That was the 2013 Robin Thicke/ Pharrell Williams song that, because of accusations of copyright infringement by the Marvin Gaye Estate, ended up in some five years of litigation. The central issue in that case, Who wrote the song? Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams or Marvin Gaye? It's one of those stories that hits the sweet spot for music, and business and copyright. PLUS... Come back in a few weeks; we'll have our take on the "Blurred Lines" case, we'll have an interview with Judith Finell. Judith was the world-renowned musicologist with the unenviable assignment of having to convince a jury that, the music they were hearing, didn't just sound like something Marvin Gaye might have written. It was a piece of music indeed written by Marvin Gaye.
Look, when a creative team is tasked with cranking out 20-something television hours for years on end you're bound to wind up with the odd outside-the-norm diversion episode. The real question is: do these unconventional efforts nonetheless entertain? This week hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton are abandoning all their usual business in order to examine these intriguingly quirky franchise stories, which mostly toss aside their series leads in favor of exploring entirely new characters. From backdoor-pilot creation Gary Seven and his unflappable feline (?) friend Isis, to the tragic tale of Benny Russell and a pair of in-depth ancestor flashbacks, the duo break down these very unique installments and ponder whether they should have been further expanded upon. A Star Trek spin-off that never was becomes a comic book, featuring twin Richard Nixons.Affiliate link included.Transcript:Graham:The Star Trek T.V. spinoff that never happened gets its own comic book. Is it any good? Find out as we take a look at Star Trek Assignment: Earth, straight ahead.[Intro Music]Announcer:Welcome to the Classy Comics podcast where we search for the best comics in the universe. From Boise Idaho, here is your host Adam Graham Graham:Fifty years ago, at the end of season two Gene Roddenberry left Star Trek the original series. The Season two finale was a backdoor pilot for another T.V. series. This was a common practice at the time, although it's really somewhat annoying in retrospect, where you watch one T.V. series but you get a pilot for another potential series. Sometimes this can work well, if they mesh together for example, the Andy Griffith Show really had a back-door pilot as part of the T.V. series, Make Room for Daddy. However, the match of Star Trak and Assignment Earth wasn't really good match. It had to have the Enterprise travelling back in time to 1968 for the flimsiest of reasons and then the crew of the enterprise really didn't impact the outcome of the story. The characters for Assignment Earth did that. The characters were Gary Seven, a human who was actually taken by aliens and trying to be part of their long, ongoing organization which tries to save humanity from itself. He has an I.Q. of 200 and is in peak physical condition, able to resist a Vulcan Nerve Pench. His secretary, Roberta Lincoln, is somebody who came in just looking for job and only in the episode Assignment Earth does she really learn what's going on. She can be flighty and erratic but she is actually really intelligent, which makes her an asset. And then there is Isis, a shape shifter who, most of the time looks like a cat. However, is able to change into a beautiful black-haired woman and they are assisted by a computer that's known as the Beta 5, which can allow them to teleport and do a lot of other neat tricks. The series wasn't picked up but John Byrne gave them a comic mini-series with stories set between 1968 to 1972. So, let's take a look at this series and see how it worked. The book starts out with “Brighter Than a Thousand Sons.” It begins with a duplication of the final scene of the Assignment Earth T.V. show and then it picks up three months after the Enterprise left where they are in Albuquerque, New Mexico and they're clued in to a Soviet agent plot to hijack a rocket test and so they go undercover at the nucular laboratory at San Lobos because apparently, they don't want to be sued by the government for using San Alamos. But at any rate they discover a scientist is doing a test on advanced nucular fusion. This alarms Gary Seven because this technology destroyed Delphi Centaurius Six. Gary Seven begins to fall for the female lead scientist on the project and at the same time, they try to track down who the spy is. There is actually a page plus with John Byrne drawing panels about each particular scientist and potential for them to actually be the criminal behind the action and so it's a mystery story but without really enough time to develop. Now, we have the next story which is Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, and in this story the enterprise arrives in 1969. However Gary Seven is able to figure out without contacting them that this is actually an earlier version of the Enterprise arriving because this story is taken from season one of Star Trek. “Tomorrow is Yesterday,” which has the Enterprise ending up in 1969 and trying to find a way to remove evidence of their arrival from local databases so as to not interfere with history and what we see in this story is that Gary Seven and Miss Lincoln are kind of on the periphery of the story trying to make sure...
**Hark! It’s an 87th Precinct Podcast Sidepod!** We slip time-streams today and end up in the 23rd Century before being whizzed straight back to the 20th Century, 1968 to be precise, as we look at what could have been Star Trek’s swan-song. The episode “Assignment: Earth” was the final episode of season two of Star Trek at a time when the show was threatened with cancellation. This episode was intended as a back-door pilot for a new spin-off. So how does this relate to the gritty and down to earth world of Ed McBain and the 87th Precinct? Well, it’s linked by two *very thin* strands. The main star of the episode is the best on-screen version of Detective (2nd Grade) Steve Carella, Robert Lansing as Gary Seven and also Leonard Nimoy who starred as a skinny-tie wearing, car-hiring, drug-running baddy in the 87th Precinct TV series in 1961. Joining Paul for the chat is illustrator, educator and all-round sci-fi nerd, Adam Paxman. Search for his various art outputs online: [Mister Paxman's Glorious Bastards](http://misterpaxmansgloriousbastards.blogspot.co.uk/), [The Museum of Fragmented Shadows](http://tmofs.blogspot.co.uk/) and [Burning Zebra: The Abandoned Storybook](http://burning-zebra.blogspot.co.uk/) – a treasure trove of grotesques, horrors, intrigue, sci-fi, adventure and philosophy in various forms.
Well, this was certainly a trying week for your erstwhile quartet of "Trek" raconteurs. First up is "Assignment: Earth," wherein alien-trained superspy Gary Seven learns the age-old lesson that some days you just can't get rid of a bomb. But what do you do when the bomb is your episode? And then it's the infamous "Spock's Brain," wherein everyone's favorite Vulcan has his gray matter pinched by aliens...to be an HVAC control unit? Also this week: more Lt. Leslie theories, Vulcan naming conventions, and Chekov does the impossible. Timestamps: synopses: 0:35; Assignment: Earth: 12:09; Spock's Brain: 47:30

Gary Seven, Audience: Zero! Mike calls "The Doctor" (Kim Miller @Flibadip) to vent his frustrations over the TOS season 2 finale, "Assignment: Earth!" Fair warning, he's coming in hot on this one and has some real issues with the episode and Gene Roddenberry for dumping a failed pilot idea into the series!
Accept your assignment this week as we go back to the '60s for Assignment: Earth! New York Times best-selling author Greg Cox is on-board for this deep examination of the Star Trek episode that didn't quite launch a Gary Seven series. Throughout the show, we discuss the roots of spy-fi, similarities to The Day the Earth Stood Still, theories of time travel in fiction, who influenced Who, and how that is absolutely NOT Victoria Vetri! Grab your servo, fire up the Beta 5, and feed the cat; it's time to talk Trek! Find out more about Greg at his personal site and check out his work available on Amazon. John Jackson Miller: Takedown. Star Trek fans have been pitting captains against each other since Picard came on the scene in 1987. The debate on whether Kirk or Picard is better still rages on internet message boards or any given weekend, in any city hosting a sci-fi convention. I think this is the longest break we’ve ever taken… This episode was recorded back on March 6, 2013, over 20 months ago. In that same vein, the Enterprise travels back to 1968 to meet the great Gary Seven! Will they end up destroying this time-traveling cat seducer? Or will they work with him to save […]
Kevin Dilmore and Dayton Ward: Seekers 2: Point of Divergence. The writing trio of David Mack, Kevin Dilmore, and Dayton Ward brought us some of the most memorable 23rd-century adventures with their Vanguard series. While the story of Starbase 47 has concluded, the exploratory missions of the Endeavour and the Sagittarius continue on in the new series Star Trek: Seekers. Capturing the fun and wonder of The Original Series with a modern sensibility, Seekers returns readers to the strange new worlds that made Star Trek so popular from the start. In this episode of Literary Treks we're joined by Kevin and Dayton, the duo behind the second book, to learn more about the Endeavour and how its crew and role differ from what we saw in Vanguard. We also learn how the two writers met and began working together, why Kang is their choice of Klingon, the future role of the Shedai metagenome and other Vanguard elements in Seekers, and much more. In our news segment we find out how John Byrne may be bringing back Gary Seven, judge volume three of the Gold Key Archives by its cover, and review part three of The Q Gambit. Assignment Earth Comics. At the end of its second season, the return of The Original Series was in doubt and creator Gene Roddenberry wanted to find something to replace his imperilled show. In 1966 he pitched a pilot script to Desilu studios entitled “Assignment: Earth,” hoping that this would be his next project. But the studio passed, and so he slipped lead characters Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln—along with their cat Isis—into an episode of TOS in hopes that Kirk and Spock would give the extra push needed to get the new series on the air. It failed, but nearly 40 years later comic legend John Byrne resurrected the idea. In this episode of Literary Treks hosts Matthew Rushing and Christopher Jones take a close look at Byrne's five-part series that delivers (mostly) all-new adventures for Seven, Lincoln, and Isis, and how these stories do more justice to Roddenberry's concept than "Assignment: Earth" ever did. In our news segment we take cover as Kor wields his bat'leth in new art from Keith R. A. DeCandido's The Klingon Art of War, look at the beautiful cover for James Swallow's The Poisoned Chalice, and get another peek at John Byrne's upcoming photo comic. Plus, Chris becomes confused about a classic TV sitcom.

Okay! We’ve reached the end of the second season, with “Bread and Circuses”, another Gene Roddenberry-penned episode, so, really, enough said, and “Assignment: Earth”, another exciting outing from our intrepid adventurers Gary Seven, Roberta Lincoln, and Isis the cat… wait, what? What the hell are we watching? Is this Star Trek? Also! Richard doesn’t like ...
