Maman! Hey, Maman! I'm glad we caught you! I wanted to invite you to take a trip with Effie and myself to New York City of 1968. Specifically 811 East 68th Street, Apt 12B – a quite extraordinary apartment with an exceptional new tenant – Class 1 supervisor 194 – Codename: Gary Seven. He, his "cat" Isis and his secretary Roberta Lincoln will be taking over the season 2 finale of Star Trek – and while they were making it, they may have even thought it would the series finale. Crazy times call for crazy parachutes, Maman.

The finale of Star Trek Summer is upon us, and before we send the crew of the Enterprise on their merry way, we've got a final pair of adventures to get through! First up, yet another old-human-society-on-an-alien-planet-thing in Bread and Circuses, then we meet Assignment: Earth's Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln, two crazy kids in the 1960s who have to stop World War III while Kirk and Spock stand around watching. CHAPTERS: (00:00:00) - The Nextlander Watchcast Episode 150: Star Trek: Bread and Circuses and Assignment: Earth (00:00:33) - Intro. (00:01:01) - Wasting no time at all launching straight into Bread and Circuses (and all the other Earth-like planet episodes). (00:06:59) - Some of the fraught background of this episode's production. (00:12:50) - Our penultimate guest cast. (00:19:13) - Planet Rome. (00:23:34) - Sun worshipers? They're more common than you think! (00:30:36) - At least we get a properly slimy villain in this episode. (00:37:50) - Sending Spock and Bones into the arena. (00:41:13) - The tank is on E and we've still got almost 15 minutes left in the episode. (00:49:08) - Are we really tacking a Jesus thing on here? Yes we are. (00:51:55) - What happens to this planet after this? And final thoughts. (00:55:00) - Break! (00:55:28) - We're back, and it's time to head back home in Assignment: Earth! (00:58:08) - The Star Trek Spin-Off Showcase! (01:01:59) - Cast chat, wherein we learn of Teri Garr's distaste for Star Trek and its fans. (01:05:23) - Brushing up against history. (01:09:12) - Here comes Gary. (01:16:34) - Gary has a mission (and a sick office). (01:20:45) - Oh no, a normal human woman! (01:24:46) - Here come Spock and Kirk to...stand around mostly? (01:26:01) - Wacky antics ensue. (01:29:00) - Gary climbs a rocket, Roberta messes with stuff. (01:35:46) - Kirk and Spock crash into the final scene for just long enough to do something lightly important. (01:40:25) - World War III is averted, but Gary Seven was never brought to series, so it all comes out in the wash. (01:44:15) - Final thoughts. (01:45:40) - Time for our favorites (and least favorites) of the season. (01:57:56) - What we have coming up in September. (02:01:30) - Outro.
In this week's tribute episode, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of an American actress with “Hollywood in her DNA,” known for her comedic roles in film and television in the 1970s and 1980s. A true courageous and magical talent.. Teri Garr! Born in Los Angeles to a theatrical multi-hyphenate father and Radio City Rockette mother, Garr was trained in ballet and would go on to appear as a dancer in five Elvis Presley movies. After studying acting in New York City, she had her breakthrough appearing in the episode Assignment: Earth of Star Trek in 1968. From there she starred in Francis Ford Coppola's thriller The Conversation in 1974 and found increasing success in films like Oh, God! (1977), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), The Black Stallion (1979), One from the Heart (1982), After Hours (1985), and Tootsie (1982) which earned her the nomination for an Academy Award. Anika and Liz arrive at an ancient and timeless ziggurat, congratulate themselves on knowing how to spell "ziggurat", and settle down in a nice mid-century modern apartment to talk about episodes 9 and 10 of Star Trek: Prodigy's second season, "The Devourer Of All Things". Including... Wesley Crusher, Star Trek: Picard, "Assignment: Earth" and more Liz drops some obscure Doctor Who lore Why do so many time travel organisations have a mid-century modern aesthetic? Adulthood is about making the hard choices, but youth is about rejecting the no-win scenario Anika wants to know how Janeway knows Wesley; Liz has a plethora of theories Don't worry, Anika can explain how Dal is like Anakin Skywalker

The Boyz watch the last episode of Star Trek The Original Series Season 2: “Assignment: Earth.” Is it actually a Star Trek episode, or in fact a back door pilot for Gary Seven's new show?
This week Dana and Dan discuss the episode "Assignment: Earth." The guys have a fun time trying to pronounce a listener's name. They also have some questions about security on the Enterprise, who's creating the earth costumes for Kirk and Spock, and why they let a cat run around free on the Enterprise. It is also hard to believe this is the last episode of season 2. Next week the guys will be on Thanksgiving break. Make sure to check out our sponsor Photobucket. What's Allie's great idea? Is Data's cat Spot canonically also a hot chick? Why do time travelers always act powerless? Will Kirk allow Marty to make sure his parents bang at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance? What are the rules of time travel anyway? How short can a miniskirt get? This week, the siblings take a break from Star Trek and watch the pilot of some other dumb failed 60s show instead
Star Trek: The Original Series, Series 2, Episode 26. First broadcast on Friday, 29 March 1968. It's the pilot of a thrilling new spy-fi series, in which Gary Seven (Robert Lansing), his plucky secretary Miss Lincoln (Teri Garr), and his cat Isis (herself) hang out in the twentieth century's most stylish decade, drinking cocktails after lunch and occasionally foiling America's military–industrial complex. Is it time for us to end our trek through the stars so that we can complete an assignment here on earth?
Join Lieutenant Rebecca Frost and noted Space Show fan Admiral Kerry Jackson as they continue their voyage through Star Trek: The Original Series! This week, we talk about these last season 2 episodes: Patterns of Force, By Any Other Name, The Omega Glory, The Ultimate Computer, Bread and Circuses, and Assignment: Earth.
Vicky thinks that the crew just has an assignment on earth itself without realizing that they went back in time and actually were part of something that I need to be part of and next week is our movie
This week, we talked to USC's Chief Sustainability Officer Mick Dalrymple. Tune in to learn about Assignment: Earth, USC's sustainability framework for a greener campus! In this foray into pretty well known, we're examining the second season of The Original Series in all its didactic glory. Whether your joy is faraway trips to places that feel very much like home, or a few light-hearted romps through the less serious parts of the galaxy, the second season has a lot to offer, and a fair bit for us to talk about. So sit back (or walk, or commute, or do whatever you want really we're not your parents) and listen in as we chat about the second season of Star Trek. Today's Sponsor: Mudd's Emporium! If you're looking for the very latest in HoloSuite technology, look no further than the HoloHeaven 3000, available exclusively through Mudd's Emporium. Don't forget to tell them Harry sent you! Bicks Log: Today we discussed which style of episode best fits Star Trek as a whole: the serious, deep, sci-fi or character heavy ones, or the lighthearted, comedic ones that have a bit more fun with the possibilities of a sci-fi universe? Notes: For those who are not familiar with Sonic Screwdrivers or Doctor Who generally... Assignment Earth is pretty much an outright theft of the idea, with the addition of a cat!

How Star Trek's leaders reflect our own. Young, charismatic, and a bit of a ladies' man, Captain James T. Kirk was cast in the mould of President John F. Kennedy, the beloved US leader who had been killed just three years before Star Trek debuted. But over the course of more than half a century, Star Trek's captains have often echoed the great politicians of the day; and sometimes they may even have paved the way for political careers in the real world. In this episode of Primitive Culture, originally released as an installment of The Sanctuary, Tony Black speaks to guest Mac Boyle about the parallels between Star Trek's leaders and our own. Where do the likes of former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, former US President Donald Trump, and current US President Joe Biden find their counterparts in the Star Trek universe? And what kind of characters can we expect in the future to take their cues from Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky? With Star Trek: Discovery's Federation President Laira Rillak taking an ongoing role, has Trek finally managed to marry the military ethos of Starfleet with the business of intergalactic politics? April Tatro is the Cat's Meow For years, there was an unsolved mystery in the Star Trek universe. In the second season of the Star Trek TOS, in an episode titled "Assignment: Earth," one of the performers went uncredited for decades – the human form of Isis the Cat. Many years later, former guest of this show and Star Trek expert Larry Nemecek uncovered the truth, and this week we speak with that enigmatic actress, April Tatro. Before landing the gig, April was a well-known dancer and one of America's best contortionists. She tells us her life's story, including how she became an acrobatic dancer and the ways she trained her unbelievable flexibility at a young age, opening nightly for Milton Berle and The Rat Pack, her appearance on Johnny Carson, her time on "Wonder Woman" with Linda Carter, and how she got so flexible in the first place and the ways she maintains that elasticity today! From there, it's onto Star Trek, and how she got the role, memories of working with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Teri Garr, and Robert Lansing, why she was uncredited originally, and how she was eventually discovered to be a part of that episode, and how much she loves Star Trek and its fans today! Plus, April spills the tea on her date with William Shatner! Get ready to go head over heels (maybe literally if you are flexible enough) with this week's guest! When the Enterprise travels back in time to the year 1968 to observe how Earth survived desperate measures without destroying itself, it intercepts a transporter beam of a man in a 20th Century business suit — plus his cat. The mysterious stranger calls himself Gary Seven, and he claims to be on a mission to save mankind from itself so it can eventually evolve into a peaceful society. Captain Kirk finds that hard to believe, but when Mister Seven escapes to the planet's surface with the intention of sabotaging the launch of an orbiting nuclear platform, Kirk and Spock must decide whether they should try to stop him or let him carry out his mission — and every second they delay could have catastrophic repercussions on Earth's future and the fate of the human race. Season 2 of “Star Trek” came to a close with “Assignment: Earth,” which was originally intended to be a pilot for a new television series. The pilot didn't sell, and although it feels at times like Kirk and Spock are guest stars on their own show, “Assignment: Earth” still fits the bill as a unique, entertaining and suspenseful episode that features standout performances from Robert Lansing and Teri Garr, the latter of whom would soon gain greater fame for starring in the likes of “Young Frankenstein,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “Tootsie,” among many other iconic movies. Star Trek's backdoor pilots. The year is 1968. As Star Trek goes off the air for good, a new show—Assignment: Earth—debuts from some of the same creative team. For dedicated Trekkies, the premise is already familiar and the two leads, Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln, have a head start garnering fans of their own. That, at least, is what might have been had Star Trek not been renewed for a third season. As things turned out, the episode featuring Seven and Lincoln was simply the finale of Star Trek's second-season, not the series, and “Assignment: Earth” was never picked up as a show in its own right. In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by Tony Black for a look at Star Trek's most famous backdoor pilot, an episode that lays out the premise for a potential future show, using the budget and production infrastructure of an existing one. “Assignment: Earth” might be Star Trek's most blatant use of this sneaky approach, but more recent examples include “Point of Light,” “Terra Firma,” and “All Is Possible.” These three installments of Star Trek: Discovery seem to hint pretty strongly at shows that might be coming down the pipe. And then there's Discovery's entire second season, which set up not only Strange New Worlds—and introduced new actors in the roles of Captain Pike, Spock, and the original Number One—but the long-awaited Section 31 show as well. What are the benefits—and pitfalls—of taking the backdoor route to a new project? And do such stories inevitably struggle to function as episodes of two different shows simultaneously? It's nostalgic when contemporary Star Trek producers touch on characters and ideas first presented in The Original Series. And that's what's happening in Star Trek Picard Season Two. The character Tallin is an agent from an advanced civilization, the same group that placed Gary seven on Earth in 1968. It's a nice way to tie in The Original Series episode, Assignment Earth. This week, co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto talk about that show and its various iterations. It was first presented back in 1968. *** In The Unofficial Trek Podcast, hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto give their "Unofficial" take on the Star Trek universe. From 2019 through 2019, Bob and Kelly hosted the show 70s Trek. It was a look at the events that brought a cancelled, 1960s TV show back from the dead to become a blockbuster movie in 1979. It was a decade that created a multi-million dollar franchise. Now Bob and Kelly will look at the minutia, the concepts, the people and the news pertaining to the Star Trek Universe. It's a fascinating time for Star Trek, with a flood of content about it on the internet. Bob and Kelly will give their "Unofficial" take. Why unofficial? Because their views are just that, they are theirs and are, therefore, "unofficial." It's a fresh look at Star Trek from two lifelong fans who have been talking Trek for over 35 years! In our latest episode, we review the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Assignment: Earth". Though we are temporarily sidetracked by our fascination with the cat named ISIS, we get into all the details of Gary Seven and what could have been.
Assignment: Earth was the twenty sixth episode of Star Trek's second season to air, with an intergalactic secret agent battling to stop a twentieth century nuclear holocaust. In this episode Gerry and Iain discussed the appropriate clothing for time travellers. On a mission to observe a key period of Earth history, the Enterprise intercepts Gary Seven (Robert Lansing) and his cat Isis as they attempt to travel to the planet from a distant world. Seven makes his escape and heads to the United States where a critical weapons launch is due to take place. Despite interference from Seven's secretary Roberta Lincoln (Terri Garr), Kirk and Spock make it to the launch site where they are waylaid by Launch Commander Cromwell (Don Keefer) and others as they attempt to stop the sabotage Seven says is vital to Earth's survival. Assignment: Earth was directed by Marc Daniels, the thirteenth of his fourteen episodes in the chair. The writer was Art Wallace, the second of his two scripts for the show. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered the wisdom of using your fountain pen as a secret switch. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. Assignment: Earth was released in 1968. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on Paramount+ in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.
