‘First, you have to learn how to be a woman. Then middle age arrives, and you realise you have to become … more than a woman. To those around you, you’re now the Fourth Emergency Service.” – Caitlin Moran Caitlin Moran was home-educated on a Wolverhampton council estate and went onto become the most iconic columnist and critic of her generation. From How to Be a Woman to Moranifesto, How to Build a Girl to Channel 4 sitcom Raised by Wolves, her game-changing take on feminism, the patriarchy and becoming a woman is above all things a cry ‘to live a full, open-hearted, joyous life’ (Sunday Times). Sometimes we need to go fringe to get out of our heads. Caitlin Donovan uses Chinese medicine to help her clients get out of the pit of depression and burnout. She has traveled a windy path to find her current career. We chat about a variety of topics that all come back to the overall theme, we all heal differently. Do what’s right for you! As Caitlin says, there is still a bit of magic in this world. We have to harness it and help each other see more of it. She herself is truly a piece of that magic. Using Chinese medicine and acupuncture, she has seen people completely transform their lives. But at the heart of it all is the beauty of the placebo effect. In all medicine, alternative or traditional, 30% of the healing process stems from the placebo. What does that mean? Taking the time and making the space for yourself to heal is just as important as which methods you use. Caitlin shares a story about a man in China who had a massive stroke. They had to remove part of his skull because the blood clot was so large and he could no longer walk. Through intense acupuncture treatment, he was back on his feet within 30 days. In the United States, he would have been wheelchair-bound. So, do you believe in the magic behind healing? Listen in to hear all about Caitlin’s studies and stories and then take a minute to download her resentment journal. Everyone talks about practicing gratitude, but what if the first step is releasing resentment? “Emotions are fine. It’s ignoring the emotions that are problematic.” Caitlin Donovan In this episode: [02:01] It’s great to have you back on the show, Caitlin! We are back with the giggles and hard questions about domestic violence in a show about sexy teens. The Society episode 9 was recorded before the protests and national conversation about police brutality so before we get started: If you have some cash, you should put it towards the Black businesses in your community. As Caitlin and Mari, we love books and food but that's just us Black owned bookstores Black Owned Restaurants, Diners, and Cafes on to the show Big Eyes wants an antifreeze round up, because the gun round up worked so well. Will points this out and they kiss about it and fight about kissing about it Chicken Noodle Soup wants Money Bags to run for mayor, and MB doesn’t really want to be CNS is so convincing. Alien Face is upset about it but how have you not figured out how Money Bags work Mary Magdalene finds Rabbit at the church. They stay at Mary Mag’s house but CNS sends a video message of a sleeping Mary Mag so Rabbit knows she is just putting her in danger. Big Eyes decides she should maybe break up with Will. If the town thinks the two of them are working together, who are they going to trust? But also they already don’t like you. She also decides that the Guard can’t run for office. They flip out but she is right. Alan Rickman tries to get them on track, I don’t love that he is going to be out of town for this MacGyuver and Dr Alien Face are studying up on delivering babies and dare I say having some making babies vibes? Rabbit gives up on running away and goes to Big Eyes where she confesses everything and Big Eyes does a 180 and turns into a helpful leader. Big Eyes will ‘arrest’ Rabbit to keep her from Chicken Noodle Soup, who still shows up at the house and demands to see Rabbit. The Committee on Getting Fed is preparing to go. Alan Rickman is tough but Ginger appears with a book and a list of feelings and while they don’t totally solve everything they make out a little and Ginger tells him to come home. Everyone on this show can die as long as I get to watch Preggers, Alan Rickman, and Ginger raise this post apocalyptic Baby Money Bags gives his mayor speech, hard to tell where he is going with it to be honest. Big Eyes does a better job but then Kathy Griffin shows up. Mostly to trash everyone else, but doesn’t totally have a new idea, she just says some truths. Money Bags DOES only care about himself and Big Eyes DOES have a power issue Big Eyes has a baby meltdown about not knowing what to do anymore and goes to bed w/ Will Dr Alien Face hangs out with Preggers (seriously only Alien Face and Mary Mag are good people) and they look at photos from the camping trip and recognize the bus driver as the dude that got rid of the smell. Which how the fuck were we supposed to see that?

How do you stay in a space of trusting your body and the process when getting pregnant presents an emotional journey of challenges? This was Caitlin’s reality when she and her wife, Shona decided to start a family. First there were the conversations of who would be the gestational parent - which were relatively easy given that Caitlin wanted to be pregnant and Shona wanted to be a parent but didn’t necessary want to be pregnant. Then come the logistics of how they would conceive. As Caitlin puts it, “we couldn’t just hop in bed and make a baby!” So they explored the different routes of insemination. There are options of having a known or unknown donor. Then for the procedure itself you can have an IUI - intrauterine insemination, which is performed at a clinic and is a more “medical process” or an ICI - intracervical insemination, which you can do at home yourself and Caitlin refers to as the more DIY insemination. Caitlin walks us through their journey, from cycle monitoring to increase the likelihood of insemination success, the rounds of unsuccessful IUIs, a break in the middle of the process after such an emotional rollercoaster and obsession with the process. They eventually moved into the ICI route, where after a few more attempts and switching up donors (now using a close friend’s sperm), they finally got their successful insemination! And so now Caitlin and Shona are planning for a home birth! We’re so honored to share their story on the podcast in our first episode with an LGBTQ family! As Caitlin says in the interview, “families are something we build out of love.” We couldn’t agree more. In our #SurvivorStories Series episode, we feature "Caitlin"--a protective mother who shares custody of her two children with her ex-husband. Caitlin describes how her ex-husband's behavior revealed signs of abuse that she didn't want to acknowledge nor understand. As Caitlin began to realize that her relationship was one of psychological and emotional abuse, began to seek help and advice from therapists, attorneys and the court, none of whom were able to understand, acknowledge or protect her and her children. Caitlin considers herself one of the "lucky" ones whose claims of abuse, though minimized and not held to account, didn't result in the too often retaliation against protective mothers through placement of the children's custody with the abuser. It is Caitlin's wish that by sharing her story, more people can understand how abuser tactics work to discredit abuse and protect the abuser from being held accountable and the children from being safe. Caitlin Pyle, a passionate entrepreneur who has built a seven-figure business in only 3 years, shares her insights on how blogging and connections with bloggers allowed her to rapidly grow her reach and revenue, and how, as an influencer, she decides who to add to her network. Caitlin's journey Caitlin had built a successful proofreading business before she created her blog. She attributes her success, among other factors, to the way she was able to niche down to a small target audience of people who were interested in a proofreading business working at home. Her proofreading course became a huge success, bringing in six figures within 90 days, and skyrocketing her business to eventually reach seven figures. Because she was able to build a seven-figure funnel, she’s now a proud member of the "Two-Comma-Club," created by Russell Brunson from Clickfunnels. Your influencer marketing story Focusing on what you're gifted at Caitlin's influencer marketing journey started when she applied to be interviewed at a targeted blog for those who were interested in building a work-at-home business. Her intent at the time, was to gain exposure by delivering valuable content to the owner of the blog. She chose collaborating with a blogger because writing is her gift; what she enjoys doing. Finding new sources of blogger connections Having experienced the positive results from her blog interview, she started to use HARO.com, a PR website that that helped her land new interviews and guest-posting opportunities on other relevant blogs. Expanding through affiliates Caitlin found her first affiliate partner by simply Googling "proofreading" and then reaching out to blog owners and other influencers who had the highest rankings. At the time, she saw the potential of collaborating with others who had a larger audience than hers grow her own business. It's important to note that when Caitlin started to build her network, she had a proven product, a clear proposal that made it easy for potential partners to say yes. A change in mindset Caitlin said that, to create those affiliate connections, she had to dramatically change her mindset. Who she used to think of as a competitor, became an ally. She proposed the idea of promoting her course to hew new connection, and because it was a perfect fit for that blogger's audience, she got a yes. That first affiliate led to the next, and the next...The rest is history! Worst influencer marketing moment Caitlin once supported an entrepreneur with her launch, and did everything it took to maximize sales. As a result, she became one of the top launch partners. However, after the launch was over, the entrepreneur in person would ignore her every time Caitlin tried to ask her for support. It became clear that the person wasn't interested in delivering value to Caitlin and creating a long-lasting connection. Lesson learned: Always put people first in your business or you'll jeopardize the relationship. "The more you give, the more you get," Caitlin says. How to Stand Out As an influencer, Cailin receives pitches for guest-posting, JV and affiliate partnerships, and interviews. She mentioned the following to stand out when you submit a pitch and start the relationship in the best possible way. Position your pitch based on the value you have to offer to the influencer Leverage a common connection whenever possible Include information that supports your expertise Show that you're really interested in the influencer Take time to build the relationshiip Cut yourself out of the equation, and just focus on serving other people Only reach out to people who share your values Don't be a cookie cutter marketer who sends out mass emails to influencers Don't try to reach out to too many people at the same time. Otherwise, the quality of your pitch will decrease Don't take yourself too seriously. As Caitlin says, "Nobody gets out of this alive." One thing you're most excited about Caitlin is excited about the launch of her new Work-At-Home program early in 2018. She's launching it with a virtual Summit. I have the honor to be part of the Summit, and I can tell you that this event is revolutionary in the way it's laid out and also in the way that it leverages product bundles to increase sales! We too often hear how out society is checked-out, apathetic, overwhelmed. There is a LOT of keep track of and cope with in the news today - in no small part because there's so much news coming at us constantly. But keeping engaged as citizens is IMPORTANT. The Missouri Coalition for the Environment has a new tool to help us be active, responsive, inquiring. It puts efficient, effective potentials in our pockets. Caitlin Zera, Community Engagement Manager for MCE, leads the team developing The People's Pocket Guide to Environmental Action. A pdf version is available now. MCE staff and volunteers are distributing (pocket sized!) print copies at community outreach events, and will be offering citizen action trainings starting this fall. An interactive online Pocket Guide is in the works, giving MCE and many partner organizations the capacity to illustrate the basic action measures with community issue examples. As Caitlin talks through the action process with Earthworms host Jean Ponzi, we are confident you'll get the goal this guide's subtitle energizes: How YOU Can Make a Difference in Your Community NOW.
