There's no doubt that our conventional healthcare system today is broken. It's flooded with patients, and this inevitably leads to mistakes and mismanagement of patients by the healthcare workers. Many patients are left navigating their care on their own, especially when they feel "off" and have pesky symptoms, but doctors can't help them because they don't have a disease diagnosis or their labs appear normal. Similarly in holistic and functional medicine, while the solutions given are more focused around application and lifestyle, patients are still required to navigate on their own with little to no support and accountability. In this episode of the Mind Your Health Show, listen as Dr. Connie, the founder of Functional Yoga Medicine, speaks about her experience as a clinician as well as a patient in the healthcare system, and how Functional Yoga Medicine came to be as a result of the limitations she both witnessed and experienced first hand. And how Functional Yoga Medicine has become the ultimate Self Healthcare System. . Be sure to subscribe to our podcast and YouTube channel so you never miss an episode of the Mind Your Health Show! In the name of holistic health, many practitioners are busy looking for different ways to treat and heal their patients. However, there lacks a truly integrative approach that aligns and connects the ancient wisdom with the modern medicine; the yin to the yang approach where all the pieces of the puzzle come together to finally make patients WHOLE again. This is what Functional Yoga Medicine aims to do with its four essential elements and 12 pillar approach. You can expect to finally understand the bigger picture while expertly mentoring your patients through the intricate details of their healing journey. In this episode, Dr. Connie discusses how Functional Yoga Medicine serves as a truly integrative approach through the Alkaline Methodology she's created to provide practitioners with a powerful healing tool and clear blueprint to finally blend theory and miracle together harmoniously to help patients heal once and for all. . Health is Wealth - a motto that is the red thread in this conversation with Stefanie. We talk about certain misconceptions about Yoga that still exist, i.e. “The more flexible the better”. Also, we touch on how important it is to work with our body and the changes that come through age, lifestyle, injury as well as pregnancy. Yet another motto for all of us to live by is “Your body is your best teacher”. Meaning to be open to other movement practices and listen to your body about what's she/he needs. In Stefanie's eyes flexibility is somewhat overrated and what we all should rather take account of is integrity. Our body needs different components of movements just like it requires balanced and varied nutrition. Inevitably we talk about what “Functional Yoga” exactly is and how and why Stefanie came up with the creation of the “MyStrengthAbility Strap”. Spoiler alert: in the word “functional” is also the word “fun” …. Stefanie has a very curious mind to explore the body and learn constantly. After her training as a Physiotherapist in 2003. The direction of preventive health through motion quickly defined her passion. Yoga was an ideal companion to evolve from rehabilitation into preventative health education in the field of Health & Yoga. As Founder of Health & Yoga Switzerland, she organizes health & Yoga events; works as a Physio-and Yoga-therapist, a Yoga Teacher & Educator locally and nationally. __________________________ LINKS TO STEFANIE Website: www.healthandyoga.ch Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mystrengthability/ Facebook: https://business.facebook.com/mystrengthability Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfli79nSSgcNggqooHjC7uQ/videos Online Academy: https://academy.healthandyoga.ch __________________________ LINKS MENTIONED IN THE INTERVIEW Stefanie's Offer for You: https://bit.ly/2V0H3DI Get a free black strap when buying a red strap. With three decades as a high school physical education teacher combined with thirty years of service in the Navy and Army Reserve, Craig Shimel has amassed a ton of perspective and knowledge around life, community, service, and fitness. And in the mid-1990s he helped pioneer the integration of functional movement and yoga in youth fitness after teaching himself simple sun salutations exercises by watching Rodney Yee's beginners yoga VHS tapes in his living room.
As a multi passionate entrepreneur and autoimmune patient, Dr. Connie realized that the more she learned, the more she realized how broken both conventional and holistic medicine was. Every educational program focuses on the theoretical subject of study, rather than real life human experience of truly empowering individuals to heal. As she was living through very serious Lupus flares, she desperately needed the latter - a truly integrative approach with the big picture in mind to cultivate alignment from within. After 31 years of didactic training, she created the Functional Yoga Medicine Certification Program to finally solve the broken medical puzzle. This episode of the podcast is brought to you by… YOU! After several requests from you, the listeners, this week’s guest is Laurel Beversdorf. Laurel's teaching style is very near and dear to my heart, and during our conversation you’ll hear me reminisce about a time in the not-so-distant past when I used to teach group classes. But don’t worry, we go much deeper than a trip down memory lane, and Laurel shares, in very practical and actionable terms, how you can start bringing new non-yoga movements & props into your classes, how we can offer a varied movement “diet” to our students and why she no longer believes that her asana practice was responsible for her pain. ABOUT LAUREL BEVERSDORFLaurel Beversdorf, YACEP, E-RYT 500, is an international yoga educator, teacher trainer, and kettlebell specialist with an advanced certification from Living.Fit. Last week my guest Eliana Chinea spoke about some of the issues that arise in the typical yoga studio model - and inside of The Teachers Club we questioned weather the studio model, as we know it, will go extinct. It's true that studio after studio are closing their doors. Many of them were in real financial trouble before the pandemic, and the closures were the last straw. However, I believe that there will always be a demand for a place where people can gather in person, in community. And as past podcast guest Nicole Cardoza says, the studios that survive will have to shift their value proposition. So this week I'm pumped to bring you a conversation I had with Robin Lacambra before covid closed the world. Robin runs Good Body Feel, what I'm calling a socially conscious yoga studio. Robin runs GBF on a dramatically different business model than 99% of the other yoga studios out there. Right now, getting creative, and thinking outside the box are what will help us adapt and reinvent what the yoga industry can become.Robin and I discuss:Why the body is political - and what that meansWhy diversity in leadership is so importantRunning a socially conscious yoga studioThe 4 pillars Robin uses to measure success in her businessRunning a ‘pay what you can’ sliding scale movement studioFIND ROBINRobin’s Personal InstagramGOODBODYFEEL InstagramGOODBODYFEEL WebsiteFIND CORACora’s InstagramCora’s NewsletterThe Teachers ClubFor links & resources mentioned in this episode go to www.corageroux.com/podcastepisodes/episode23Support the show (https://www.corageroux.com/theteachersclub)
Myra and I spoke before the COVID-19 Pandemic became a serious social and public health emergency. However, it’s been several weeks since I last put out the podcast, and I know I’ve found respite in the podcasts I love in the last few days. Taking dog walking breaks and listening to shows that have nothing to do with the pandemic have been healing for me - so in case The Teaching Yoga Podcast can be that for you right now - here is an episode with an incredible woman and teacher, Myra Lewin. Myra is the founder and director of Hale Pule - a Yoga & Ayurveda training centre and space for healing. I’ve been following Myra’s work for quite some time through her podcast Everyday Ayurveda and Yoga.As I think you can tell in the interview Myra is someone that I really admire, because as far as I can tell, she runs an incredibly successful business, yet truly LIVES the principles of Ayurveda and yoga. Myra has been practicing and teaching Yoga and Ayurveda for over 30 years, is the author of two books - Freedom In Your Relationship To Food and Simple Ayurvedic Recipes. Hale Pule is also a teaching space, and each year Myra and her team lead numerous professional training in Yoga & Ayurvedic studies. I was most excited to speak with Myra about how yoga & ayurveda can help us age with grace. *Please note - in the actual audio podcast I mention that Hale Pule also has an organic farm. While that was true when their center was located in Hawaii, their new home in New Zealand will have an abundant garden instead.FIND MYRAHale Pule WebsiteHale Pule InstagramThe Everyday Ayurveda PodcastFIND CORACora's InstagramThe Teachers Club Waitlist
Nicole is one of those people that I definitely felt was way too cool to talk to me, especially since we scheduled the interview, Nicole is now the face of Nike's Spring 2020 Yoga campaign. Not to mention her plentiful accolades, multiple not-for-profit businesses and the fact that she is an all around changemaker in wellness - I felt truly lucky to have the opportunity to speak with her. I first learned of Nicoles work, sadly, due to the mess that Yoga Journal made after her cover shoot last June. Since that time, I’ve been watching Nicole spread her message of reclaiming wellness, closing the wellness gap and making wellness accessible to all. She’s taken what could have been a career defining controversy, and parleid it into a launch pad for equity and justice. #impressedABOUT NICOLENicole is a serial entrepreneur passionate about the reclamation of wellness. As the founder and Executive Director of Yoga Foster, a national nonprofit that empowers educators with yoga and mindfulness resources for the classroom, she’s re-invested over $2.5M in resources from the wellness community to increase the health equity of schools across the country. After controversy with Yoga Journal over her cover feature for their August / September 2019 issue, Nicole’s work and mission went viral. From that experience, she launched Reclamation Ventures, a fund that invests in high-potential, underestimated entrepreneurs making wellness more accessible in their communities. She’s a 2017 Forbes 30 Under 30, 2020 Well + Good Changemaker, 2019 Summit Fellow and 2017 Camelback Ventures Fellow. Her work has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, Well + Good, Mind Body Green, Yoga Journal, SELF Magazine, and Girlboss. In today's show, Nicole and I discuss:What the Wellness Gap isWhy inclusivity is deeper than who you put on your marketing materialsHow to make your business truly inclusive, and bring wellness to allWhy true inclusivity starts with the people behind the business A concrete way to start unpacking our own blind spots, and do the work to create inclusivity from the insideIntention vs. ImpactA definition of IntentionA definition of ImpactThe best analogy of intention vs. impact I’ve ever heardSpiritual bypassing in the yoga community to avoid accountabilityCommunity Care & Healing JusticeBuilding community into every part of your practiceHow the wellness industry operates within capitalism Unpacking what community really meansStarting a social impact organizationDeciding on a not-for-profit or for profit business structureUnderstanding not-for-profitsMission creep - what it is, and how to prevent itFIND NICOLENicole’s WebsiteNicole’s InstagramYoga Foster WebsiteReclamation Ventures WebsiteFIND CORACora's websiteCora's InstagramThe Teaching Yoga Podcast - LIVE in MelbourneThe Teacher's Club WaitlistFind the full show notes, and links to everything we discuss on my website
Much like yoga, I have a deeply personal relationship to Ayurveda, however I’m very aware that like yoga, Ayurveda comes from a culture that is not my own. This week the podcast takes on a different form - solo episode of a monthly round up of what happened in Yoga during January. Aside from locking myself out of “my” ( I use quotes because I house sit full time ) apartment and missing an interview, a yoga news show has been bubbling around in my mind for a while. Members of The Teachers Club will receive a Yoga Weekly newsletter detailing the news of the week, so I thought I would venture out and try this new format on the podcast. Of course, this report is biased. I’ve selected yoga news stories I felt were relevant, important or interesting. Other things happened in yoga during January 2020 - this is the highlight reel I’ve curated.Let me know what you think…NOTE: I have no formal education in journalism, writing or media law. My education is in yoga and psychology. We’ve come together to have a voice in our industry, raise industry standards, and create a more equitable and sustainable profession for all. Our goal is for employees, students and businesses to thrive”I was lucky enough to interview Markella Los, one of the union organizers for today’s podcast. Markella is a yoga teacher, movement educator and one of the organisers of the worlds first union for yoga teachers teachers. I’ve been following Markella on instagram for a few years, because we share a similar philosophy about movement. We’ve had similar experiences with a long period of “yoga only” movement, and suffered pain and injuries as a result. After which learning from humans outside the yoga system, and upgrading our knowledge of how to keep the body healthy and resilient through movement. But then… last year, I noticed that Markella was part of a group of teachers at YogaWorks studios in new york who were organising a union. Markella was one of the first people I reached out to, to be on the new show - and due to the fact that the union was literally forming when I asked her to come on - we had to postpone recording until a few weeks ago.We talk about:Why Markella & the Yoga Works teachers began to pursue creating a unionPay barriers to becoming a yoga teacherPay transparencyWhy the burden of getting a pay rise shouldn’t fall on the individual An update on where the YogaWorks union is now (after the YES vote in November)How a union works - collective bargaining, creating a contractWhat types of things the union is able to ask forHow much time takes to organise a unionThinking globally and acting locallyBottom up organising in your communityCriticism & union busting tacticsOrganizing for independent contractors ( vs. employees ) Misclassification of yoga teachers as independent contractorsThe personal investment and growth of organisingThe first thing to do if you’re thinking about starting a unionThe main criticisms / challenges of yoga union organisingUnion busting tacticsHow the financial backing of a union worksHow a yoga union can help foster diversity and access in yogaFIND MARKELLAMarkella’s InstagramMarkella’s WebsiteFIND CORACora's InstagramCora's WebsiteTeachers Club WaitlistFor full show notes & links to resources mentioned in this show head to www.corageroux.com/podcastepisodes/episode13

Yoga and touch are heavily associated with each other - as yoga teachers, we are often given some training in how to use our hands, feet, and bodies to align, adjust and even comfort our students. As a student, chances are you’ve been touched by a yoga teacher in class. Many students have told me that the main reason they go to yoga is to be touched, and still countless others have told me they’ve been injured, or even abused by their yoga teachers using touch. As awareness finally grows in the yoga community about consent to touch being a non-negotiable necessity ( hello & thank you #metoo + the netflix Bikram doco + writings about somatic dominance + Karen Rain going public to name just a few! ) some teachers have become ( understandably ) hesitant and confused about touching their students. I get it. And I think we should be concerned, I think we should educate ourselves around consent, I think we should reevaluate the need to adjust anyone with the intention of taking him / her / them deeper into a pose. Touch can heal. And touch can harm. Can we as a yoga community relearn how we use touch to make it helpful rather than harmful?Ashley Brodeur thinks so. Ashley offers us a way to touch that is informed & supportive. It’s not designed to fix, or correct anything. Instead of taking a student deeper into his / her / their pose, Feelosophy uses informed touch to take the student deeper into their connection with themselves. On today’s episode I talk with Kathryn Bruni-Young. Kathryn grew up in her mom’s yoga studio in Toronto, she took her first teacher training when she was 17, and at 22 she started to notice aches and pains after her practice. In the years that followed Kathryn began to look outside the yoga world for answers to her physical symptoms, and along the way studied with Ido Portal, and began lifting weights seriously. In 2015 Kathryn won the Ontario Provincials in powerlifting. Since that time Kathryn has created all kinds of different resources for yogi’s who are curious about adding strength training to their movement practice, and is the host of the mindful strength podcast. In many ways ( apart from the powerlifting championship ) Kathryn and I share a very similar story, in that I started practicing as a teenager, in my early 20’s my body was in a lot of pain while I practiced, and strength training has completely turned my world around when it comes to feeling physically stable, strong, capable and young. So, if you’re a long term practitioner who is suffering from niggles, aches or pains or even injury I think you’re really going to love this episode with Kathryn.
