Healing With Angelica Podcast With Guest Joy X Episode: 115Podcast Overview:The Power of Acupuncture: Restoring Balance & Vitality | Joy X highlights how acupuncture, an ancient practice, promotes healing by balancing the body's energy flow. It explores its benefits, like stress relief, pain reduction, and renewed vitality, offering a modern, holistic perspective on this timeless therapy.Guest Information: Sister Dr. Joy 2X aka “The Qi Mechanic” has been studying and practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) for over 13 years, receiving her Masters and Clinical Doctorate studies from Daoist and Traditional Chinese Medical Colleges on both the east and west coasts. In TCM, it is understood that the body innately knows and desires to heal itself. She is also the former co-host on the podcast, The STEM Files. The medicine she offers in person, and virtually , is to assist you in your healing journey, like a mechanic for your vital energy! Over the past decade she has been on a journey into the history and, application of Indigenous East Asian Medicine. Having had unique experiences as a patient, student, teacher, herbal pharmacist, and Director of Operations, while working with Chinese medicine, she has enjoyed connecting more with her own Afro-Indigenous roots (Honduras) to the classics of Chinese Medicine and in her own healing journey. She has had the honor of working with hundreds of patients while an intern for 5 years, helping them with pain management, substance overuse and abuse, mental health, fertility, neurological and metaphysical dis-eases. Sister Dr. Joy enjoys the co-creative space made during treatments, “as we empower each other through organic medicine.” When Sis Joy is not practicing medicine with her “mini light sabers” (acupuncture needles), she loves collecting and listening to vinyl records, gardening, stone/crystal medicine, and writing. It is her hope to help make this medicine accessible to everyone, especially in her hometown, and surrounding areas, where she fundraised, with her community, for the first of its kind, a mobile acupuncture clinic. Her next goal is to make access to natural medical care possible by teaching more online and in-person courses. Sis. Our summer-long 'Power of Play' series starts now with special guest Allie Ticktin. Allie's mission is to empower children and their families through sensory play so that they can thrive through childhood and beyond. Allie is the author of the book, Play to Progress, where she provides parents with an overview of all 8 (yes, 8) senses and gives parents ways to enhance those senses at home. Allie uses the science of child development and the joy of play to boost childrens' confidence and enhance development within all areas of their life, from social and emotional to physical and academic. Allie believes that the best way to support children is by arming their parents, from inception, with the knowledge and skills necessary to encourage their child's development for success through childhood and beyond. Allie began her work in pediatric development at the University of Michigan, where she earned her B.S. in Movement Science, and continued her studies at USC, where she received her M.A. and Clinical Doctorate in Occupational Therapy. Allie is certified in Sensory Integration and hopes that one day one day quality open ended play will be considered as important as learning the ABC's. When not at work, you can find Allie at the beach engaging her own sensory system, outside enjoying nature or on her spin bike. Allie also loves to bake vegan treats, read and color in mindfulness coloring books, which are her own regulation tools. “Motherhood caught me off guard, knocked me over a little bit and I had to definitely readjust my crown.” -Dr. Krystal In this podcast episode, I am joined by Dr. Krystal Monique, a mother of twins and a doctor of occupational therapy. We discuss the importance of self-care for mothers and how it can be challenging to prioritize self-care after becoming a parent. Dr. Krystal shares her personal experience of juggling motherhood, her career, and her own well-being. She emphasizes the need to be intentional and adapt self-care practices to fit into the new role of being a mom. In this episode, you can expect to hear: -Twin motherhood challenges. -Self-care vs. Self-maintenance -Postpartum Self-Care Journaling. -Mom guilt and self-care. -Normalizing motherhood challenges. About Dr. Krystal Monique Originally from Brooklyn NY, Dr. Krystal Monique studied Health and Physical education at Virginia State University where she obtained her Bachelors of science, followed by her Masters of science in Occupational Therapy from Howard University. Subsequently Dr. Krystal Monique went on to complete her Clinical Doctorate from Concordia University-Wisconsin. As an occupational therapist she has been privileged to combine her love for travel with her chosen career to complete several missionary trips and work with the underserved population. Her passion for helping others from a young age sparked a natural leadership string in her. She was always taught to speak her mind and advocate for herself and her peers. Privy to the health disparities in predominantly women of color as a new mother Dr. Krystal Monique understood the challenges and stigmas motherhood may bring. Journaling has always been an outlet for her to unwind, center her thoughts and keep a self of calmness in an ever changing world. During her pregnancy she found many journals that she could relate to however during postpartum months she felt a void. Leading her to create her own prompts thus birthing one minute mama. Now 14months into this motherhood journey and looking back at the various conversations she has had with family and friends she's learned that Grace and true centering are two key components to performing at her highest vibration. What do you DO with your newborn when you get home with them? Today we're chatting about activities you can do with your baby. Today's guest is Allie Ticktin. In this episode of the Postural Restoration Podcast I am joined by Brad Gilden, who graduated with a Masters of Science from New York Medical College in 2000 and a Clinical Doctorate in upper quarter and hand therapy, from Drexel University in 2004. Since his schooling Brad has completed several certifications including the completion of the Functional Manual Therapy training and Fellowship from the Institute of Physical Art (IPA), alongside many others. Early on in his career Brad knew he wanted more out of his role as a provider, than the 15 minutes he was being allotted per patient. This journey led him to multiple rehab settings dealing with both acute and chronic pain presentations, neurological disorders and amputees. This journey ultimately led Brad to start his private practice, Elite Health Services, in 2005. Allowing him to start incorporating more into his clinical practice working alongside Strength Trainers, Pilates Instructors and many other movement professionals as he built his model around this team approach. In 2010 he was introduced to Dr. Michael Gelb as a patient and felt the effects of dental integration first hand, for the first time. This experience opened Brads mind to the power of autonomic regulation via an oral appliance and he knew that many people patterns would be very challenging to dissociate without this missing piece of the puzzle. This experience opened the door to his conversations with dentists as a whole and his appreciation for their role. While realizing for the first time that dentists where not only open to collaboration with him in his role, but they were searching for it as well.As both Brads integration with dentistry and his collaboration with Dr. Gelb grew, he was quickly surrounded by others searching for the same integration. This led him to Dr. Howard Hindin who together with Dr. Gelb, founded the American Academy of Physiologic Medicine and Dentistry (AAPMD). As their movement of collaboration together grew, Brad was given the opportunity to present at their second Annual Conference. Sharing the stage with people like Mariano Racobato, Roger Price, Jennifer Hobson, and Barry Raphael among many other well known speakers. It was after his presentation focused around the role of the diaphragm and its influence on the orofacial complex as a whole, that Heather Carr first introduced him to the work of Ron Hruska. Shortly after Brad took his first Postural Respiration course. In 2016, Brad was given the opportunity to organize the PT Track of the Annual AAPMD conference and he knew that he needed to try and get both Ron and PRI as a whole involved. After a series of meetings Ron agreed to present for the first time as part of the 2017 collaboration cures convention. As a result of the series of courses and collaboration through PRI that Brad had completed, including mentorship alongside Ron working together in Manhattan, Brad became Postural Restoration Certified in 2020.Brad and I discuss the history of our shared collaboration over the past several years. And specifically, his journey of integrating with the field of dentistry and the idea of “standing on the shoulder of giants, and passing their work onto the world”. To end our conversation Brad discusses how the evolution of the Physical Therapy track has grown, which this year will include Myofunctional Therapy and other therapists collaborating together in one place. Brad goes on to discuss this years AAPMD Collaboration Cures Convention on September 15-18th. For more information on this years meeting, the agenda and speaker line up, as well as a PT Track Discount I encourage you to visit the AAPMD Collaboration Cures page for more information.

Session 4: The Unconscious and the Body Katerina Fotopoulou - The Embodied Relational UnconsciousThe Freudian Unconscious was closely related to the mental representation of the body, and particularly the satisfaction of its biological needs. Katerina Fotopoulou will talk about 'the embodied relational unconscious', discussing certain classical and contemporary psychoanalytic insights on the unconscious that shed light on contemporary clinical and neuro-scientific findings. Among other fascinating things, we will learn about the psychological mechanisms by which body feelings are influenced by internalised social expectations and interactions; how bodies are interpersonally mentalised and perceived to form the basis of ourselves. Aikaterini (Katerina) Fotopoulou PhD is Senior Lecturer at the Psychoanalysis Unit, Psychology and Language Sciences Division, UCL and Research Affiliate at the UCL's Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience. Her current research projects focus on body feelings, sensorimotor signals and related body representations in healthy individuals and in patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders of body awareness; she is interested in psychological and neural mechanisms by which our interoceptive body feelings, as well as multimodal representations of the body, are influenced by internalised social expectations, on-line interactions with other people and by neuropeptides known to enhance social feelings. These studies point to unique neural mechanisms by which our bodies are interpersonally ‘mentalised' and perceived to form the basis of our selves. Katerina is the Director of the London Neuropsychoanalysis Centre and runs the London Neuropsychoanalysis Group on: ‘Psychodynamic Neuroscience and Neuropsychology'. With Conway and Pfaff, she is co-editor of the volume From the Couch to the Lab: Trends in Psychodynamic Neuroscience (2012). In 2011, she was awarded the prestigious British Neuropsychological Society's Early Career Award, The Elizabeth Warrington Prize, as well as the Clifford Yorke Prize (2006) by the International Neuropsychoanalysis Society, for Early Career Contributions to the field, and the Papanicolaou Prize in a joined meeting of the World Hellenic Biomedical Society and the Hellenic Medical Society of Britain. Katerina is also finishing her Clinical Doctorate in Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Psychology, accredited by the British Psychological Society and the Health Professions Council and leading to eligibility for Professional Chartership.

The path of a career yoga teacher can be a circuitous one. I find it so helpful to hear how different teachers navigate that terrain, and today we get to hear from Caitlin Casella, who has been teaching yoga and leading teacher trainings for a decade! Since adding strength training and other functional movement modalities to her repertoire, her practice and priorities have shifted. Now, as she pursues her Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy, Caitlin's aim is to make movement more accessible to the general population and demystify the science of the human body. In this episode you'll hear: Why Caitlin stopped referring to the movement practice that she teaches as Yoga and what sparked that shift. The emotional process Caitlin navigated as she made this change in her teaching. The yoga poses that Caitlin finds irrelevant, and how she suggests shifting them to make them more useful. Some of the roadblocks we see other teachers run into as they try to make their teaching safer or more thoughtful when it comes to optimal musculoskeletal function... and... The advice we can offer them from our experience!
Isa Dreyer is a pain management specialist here in Tasmania and has also been an inspiring and close family friend of mine for many years. I have been on many short adventures with Isa and every time we are cruising the trails we find ourselves in deep discussion about her work. Pain, trauma and optimising wellness through adversity have become fascination areas of mine, and I was eager to share Isa’s wisdom and vibrancy with you on the Podcast. Despite her father’s traditional views of the role of the woman, Isa pursued her career, starting her impressive list of qualifications at a chiropractic school in Portland Oregon, USA, before moving back to Cape Town, South Africa to study a Bachelor of Science (Physiotherapy). Isa spent 3 years in the UK working as physiotherapist and while doing so, spent her holidays cycling and adventuring through Europe. Isa later furthered her studies with a Clinical Doctorate of Physical Therapy at Boston University (2004-2006) and a Masters of Science in Medicine (Pain Management) at The University of Sydney (2013-2014). Isa moved to Tasmania in 2006, finding employment in a sports physiotherapy clinic whilst also working at Royal Hobart Hospital in the pain unit. In 2015, she started at Federal St Pain Clinic – a multi-disciplinary clinic with a small team including a psychologist, pain specialist and two other physiotherapists. Her depth of knowledge and desire to assist others through pain is profound. I learnt so much about the subject of pain from her during this short conversation. I hope you can too. Isa, thank you so much for taking the time to come onto the Find Your Feet Podcast and I know there is still so much we can learn from you! MAIN POINTS - Pain - why do we persist through pain? - How the importance of the goal can directly affect the intensity that we feel pain. - Trapped trauma – Mental and emotional associations with physical pain. - The memory of pain - How injuries can impact our perceptions of pain and even exacerbate pain. - The power of creating safe environments – methods to decrease pain output - Neurological mechanics – “pathways that wire together, fire together” - Biopsychosocial and holistic approaches to pain management and treatment - Lesser known influences that increase inflammation & pain in the body - Being driven by curiosity as opposed to the pressure and fear of missing out - How Isa practises rest, mindfulness and ‘quiet time’ (despite being a go-getter!) Isa has just been accepted to be a rider in next year’s Pain Revolution Ride that is happening in Tasmania in March 2019. “I am pretty excited that I was chosen, as there were 3x more applicants than riders. We are riding 700km in 8 days .The most important part of it will be educating rural and remote Tasmania about pain in the evenings, when we stop in the little towns.” As part of this, Isa has to raise $3000 as a local hero. All the funds will go directly into providing Tasmanian health care professionals with extra training and mentoring to provide better and more up to date health care for pain. For more information visit The Pain Revolution Ride - https://www.painrevolution.org/local-pain-educator-program

In this special episode of Innovation Rising, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Stephen Hunter, Physical Therapy Administrator for Intermountain Healthcare Physical Therapy and founder of ROMS, which stands for Rehab Outcomes Management System, which he developed at Intermountain Healthcare in 2000 and which was accepted to go through the Intermountain Foundry Program in 2015. Stephens passion for the startup is palpable and I had a great time in my conversation with him. Stephen has been with Intermountain for over 31 years where he is the active administrator over 11 outpatient orthopedic PT clinics and a practicing clinician. Stephen is the Author and co-author to several articles establishing the value of physical therapy and has his Clinical Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Utah. In 2014, Intermountain Healthcare launched their Foundry Program in partnership with Healthbox. The Foundry is a part-time program providing resources and guidance to vet the business aspects of employee ideas that could either benefit Intermountain internally or have additional commercialization potential outside of the system. For more details on setup, genesis, and background of Intermountain’s innovation focus, have a listen to our previous episode with Jeremy Porter, the Director of Business Development at Intermountain Healthcare. In this episode Stephen and I discuss: What ROMS is today and how it works How Stephen sees his product making an impact on the industry and improving the lives of patients Stephen’s experience in the Intermountain Foundry Program and what he got out of it Stephen’s thoughts around how being a physical therapist himself helped him in creating ROMS What advice Stephen has for entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs who don’t have access to such dedicated resources as the Intermountain Foundry: Who would be other people internal innovators should look to add to their team? How can internal innovators obtain the executive support they need? How the ROMS solution helps achieve impactful results in a value based care model What obstacles Stephen faces as he continues to build ROMS as an employee-innovator What Stephen is most excited about in healthcare innovation right now Connect with Stephen: LinkedIn ROMS Learn more about Intermountain Health Website Twitter Links mentioned in the show: Innovation at Intermountain Episode 2 with Jeremy Porter Connect with Healthbox Follow us on Twitter Subscribe and leave a review in iTunes Have guest suggestions or topic ideas for the podcast?
