The Doctor Me First podcast is an incredible resource for physicians looking for support and inspiration on their journey towards well-being and fulfillment. Dr. Errin Weisman, the host of the show, brings a refreshing perspective to the medical field, reminding listeners that it's okay to put their own well-being first. The conversations on this podcast are honest and vulnerable, providing a sense of community and understanding that many physicians may not have experienced before. I wish I had known about this podcast when I was in training or as a younger attending because it would have made a world of difference.

One of the best aspects of The Doctor Me First podcast is Dr. Weisman's genuine and real approach. She doesn't shy away from discussing difficult topics or sharing her own personal experiences, which creates an authentic connection with her audience. Her energy is contagious, and listening to her feels like having coffee with a friend who truly understands the challenges of being a physician. The podcast also features guest interviews, such as the episode with Dr. Dena George, which provide different perspectives and valuable insights into various aspects of medicine.

While there aren't many negative aspects to this podcast, some listeners may find that certain episodes resonate more with them than others. This is simply due to personal preferences or specific areas of interest within medicine. However, even if an episode doesn't directly relate to your situation or specialty, there is always something valuable to take away from each conversation.

In conclusion, The Doctor Me First podcast is a must-listen for any physician seeking support, inspiration, and guidance on their path towards well-being and fulfillment in medicine. Dr. Errin Weisman's honesty, vulnerability, and genuine approach make this podcast relatable and empowering. Whether you're feeling burnt out or simply looking for advice on navigating the medical field on your own terms, this podcast provides valuable insights that can help transform your perspective and improve your overall well-being as a physician.

Welcome to the Doctor Me First Reboot Showcase where we are spotlighting the amazing podcasts and podcasters who have interviewed ME. Over the next several months we will be sprinkling in interviews I've done on other shows to highlight other amazing podcasts. This episode is from The Productive Woman Podcast. Today I'm excited to launch our new-for-2021 Productive Living series. As I mentioned in last week's episode, this'll be a recurring series in which I talk with women with special expertise or insight or experience in various areas that are important to us as women wanting to make a life that matters. We'll talk about topics relevant to health, relationships, money, mindset and self-care, homemaking and home management, and creativity and fun. This week we'll be looking at the other topical area: career, as I share with you my conversation with physician and life coach Errin Weisman.  As a female physician who almost gave up medicine, Errin found herself in the pit of burnout in 2014. From the outside, it seemed like she had it all–a successful career, children, a new home–but internally she was numb. And she was ready to do whatever it took to feel better. She thought she had done everything right, so why did she feel so bad? She wondered if something was wrong with her. As she began her journey to wellness, she realized she wasn't the only one feeling this way and decided she wanted to help others. 2 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT LOW-COST!!! Over the next several months we will be sprinkling in interviews I've done on other shows to highlight other amazing podcasts. This episode is from the SurgeonMasters podcast..   Pump the brakes on your week and take 10 minutes to make your life as a surgeon just a little better… Jeff welcomes to the podcast SurgeonMasters collaborator and physician coach, Dr. Errin Weisman.  On this episode, Errin and Jeff talk about being comfortable with being UNcomfortable.  Is there a new skill you want to learn or a hobby you want to pick up? Maybe there's a physical habit you want to make routine, but it just hasn't happened yet. Is there something you want but haven't had the nerve to ask for? Uncertainty and discomfort can stifle growth and progress. On the flip side, healthy uncertainty with a solid support system can be invigorating and lead to growth.  Yes, it can feel overwhelming to make even small changes or add anything to our plate when it already feels so full. But we rarely experience progress without some level of uncertainty or unease.  Errin tells us to embrace these feelings, and to work on gaining perspective and developing a plan to move forward. What steps does Errin suggest we take to embrace being uncomfortable and spark growth? Step 1 – Awareness – Understand if you are running away from something or moving toward something. What is underlying your desired change? Step 2 – Assessment – Find clarity around WHY you feel this way and what has led to this point. Step 3 – Action – Take INCREMENTAL steps to start moving forward. Small steps can power SUBSTANTIAL growth. Most importantly, embrace the uncomfortable! Growth comes from a place of discomfort, starting with incremental steps.

All are extra delicious (and in my opinion cooked to perfection) when their centers are soft and their edges crispy. You know what's not best crispy around the edges?  You and me. It's a great analogy Doctor Of Osteopathic Medicine Errin Weisman uses to describe people who are headed for burn out.  She would know. Errin hit rock bottom early in her career and bounced in and out of burn out several times. During those encounters with burnout, she felt empty, exhausted, and cynical about everything and everyone else around her.  Errin had it all and yet, she was the only one not to see it because she was blinded by the crippling fog of burnout. Over time, Errin was able to pull herself up by her own bootstraps by making different choices in her life. She slowed down, prioritized herself, and created a schedule that works for her - one in which she refuses to start work until 10am, even if that means calling in that day.  Errin took charge of her mental health and is a new person these days. She's now in the business of coaching others to respect their guardrails so they can prevent burnout, heal, and live fulfilling business and personal lives without overdoing it.  If you regularly don't have time for a break, healthy meal, the gym, or quality family time, you're already crispy around the edges and it's time to turn off the heat! 2 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT LOW-COST!!! It's the idea of sacrificing everything in our life to pursue a “good profession” and then once we've made it realizing that we actually feel empty and have lost so many years just blindly hustling without stopping to appreciate what's in front of us. It's waiting for the delayed gratification to come and realizing that it's not going to come. Errin Weisman is a family physician turned life coach who is all about calling out the bullshit on the hustle culture. She did what many professionals might be afraid to do: moving out of a career that we're told by society is “good” and that we've “made it” - and instead pursuing a career like coaching where there is so much judgment and negativity that it's not a “real job”. If you want to hear more on this topic, check out this week's podcast episode. On the episode, we discuss: The cost of security and safety Burnout from being out of alignment Defining success on our own terms I believe in you - you are doing way better than you realize!  Lana If you enjoy these conversations, check outThe Lighthouse Collective. In this episode, Errin takes the reins and interviews Jeff about his recent surgical sabbatical. Earlier this summer, Jeff had lumbar spine surgery to address a herniated disc and foraminal stenosis. Since the procedure, he has been doing his best to be a good patient by taking six weeks off from taking calls and performing surgery. It's been a difficult transition, since Jeff has never taken that much time away from surgery in his entire career! As physicians, we often make for terrible patients. According to Jeff: “Despite my knowledge that wellness includes the mental, emotional, and spiritual, I was much more prepared for the physical experience and recovery. The forced experience of not being the one delivering the care as a surgeon gave me a new perspective and tremendous opportunity for growth.” What tips does Jeff have for surgeons who are taking a step back (either via sabbatical, medical leave, or figuratively) so they can move forward? Tip 1 – Reach out to a coach or someone who has the skill set to listen and support you through the experience. listen and support you through the experience. Tip 2 – Start working with that person well before the big challenges come along as this will help prepare you for dealing with such a significant change. Tip 3 – Be prepared for the work of the experience including the unease, discomfort, turmoil, and pain mixed in with the positives. Most importantly, practice taking a mini-sabbatical that allows for reflection or coaching!   2 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT LOW-COST!!! Burnout, physician suicide, and other mental illnesses are issues the medical community continues to grapple with. Although there is greater awareness and recognition of these mental health problems than in the past, doctors still find themselves afraid to speak up and seek help. (4:05) Despite these prevalent fears, some medical professionals are stepping up to provide resources to help each other out. In this episode of Prosperous Doc, our host Shane Tenny is joined by family medicine physician and founder of Physician Coaching Alliance, Dr. Errin Weisman. Dr. Weisman explores the benefits of physician coaching for coping with the unique issues facing medical practitioners today. She shares her journey to becoming a coach and how difficult days fueled her passion for coaching. (1:47) She goes on to examine the surge in demand for professional and life coaching in the medical industry, as more discover this as a valuable tool. Dr. Weisman also touches on several challenges common to the medical profession, including physician burnout, physical and career suicide (13:00), money dynamics in marriages, and other financial struggles. (20:27) Her solution, when things pile up and get overwhelming, is to take things one step at a time, tackle and focus on one issue first. (16:12) Some of the key takeaways that Dr. Weisman wants physicians to understand is that you are not alone in your problems, you are not stuck, and there is hope that things are going to change. (17:07) Remind yourself that you are okay, even when it feels like the current situation is not. It's never a sign of weakness to reach out and ask for help, so please reach out for help when you need it. My friend Dr. Laura Suttin is a family physician down in San Antonio, TX. She is wearing all the hats as a business consultant, author, coach, and MD. She helps other physicians tell their stories and find their voice after they have been chewed up by the culture of the medical system. Female physicians often find themselves in situations of powerlessness in their work. They do not have the power to take a day off, they do not have the ability to take a break or a breath. It often takes a coach or a mentor to step in and help us realize that we can take our power back and prioritize our own health.  As strong women, we are not the type to be a victim in a situation. As we strive for the bar of what a “good physician” looks like, we often get caught up in that image and the pressures of the medical culture, not realizing that we are actually being victimized. By understanding that, you can create your own power and your own movement to stand your ground and stand up to the bullies of the medical culture and the impossible standards it sets for us as physicians.  There will always be days when we are having a harder time than others, and there are ways that we can cope with those days and those circumstances that can provide us with the support we need to make it through those harder days while continuing to prioritize our needs and our feelings. As physicians, we often stuff our feelings down, and a big leap to take is to sit with your feelings and actually feel them as opposed to burying them and carrying them.  Dr. Laura and I talk all about the ways we can take back our voices, find our power, and cope with difficult times in this episode, and it is full of value for physicians no matter where they find themselves in their careers. We hope that you'll join us today and that you can take away some actionable tips to get your voice back and steer yourself back into your own power. “We're not robots. Dr. Amna Shabbir was a previous podcast listener and member of the Physician's Coaching Alliance. In the depths of burnout, she stumbled across Dr. Me First and found that she wasn't alone in her physician burnout. After listening for over a year throughout her toughest times, she finally reached out to me, and the rest has been history.  Originally from Pakistan, Dr. Amna made her journey to the US as an international medical graduate (IMG). Statistically, IMGs tend to practice in underserved communities and with the elderly. Hardworking and dedicated, IMGs are still susceptible to burnout as they end up in areas with minimal resources, stressful work situations, and a system that is stacked against them. With the cultural influence that many IMGs face about the career pressures to become a doctor, it can make the journey out of physician burnout that much more difficult. Finding themselves in situations where they are often underpaid, overworked, and isolated from their support system - the struggle that IMGs face is real, and they need the help, reassurance, and tools to fight burnout amidst the added pressures to succeed that are placed on them by their families.  After completing her fellowship, Dr. Amna found her calling as an integrated wellness and life coach while continuing to be a practicing geriatrician in nursing homes and obtaining the work-life balance and fulfillment that she has always wanted. She now helps others achieve the same, and she has a heart for helping IMGs carve their path in medicine.  She has a big passion for helping others transition and succeed while loving themselves and loving medicine, and you will absolutely want to tune in to this episode and hear us chat about the struggle that IMGs face and how the resources that are available to help them succeed.    “Challenge the narratives that you share with yourself.” Dr. Amna Shabbir   Connect with Dr. Shabbir: Amna Shabbir Instagram |LinkedIn   2 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!! Over the next several months we will be sprinkling in interviews I've done on other shows to highlight other amazing podcasts. This episode is from the Fried. The Burnout Podcast with Cait Donovan. Errin Weisman, D.O. was taught, like all doctors to be a robot, a superhuman, a she-ro - and it burnt her out. Now, Errin Weisman, DO is a life coach, podcaster and fierce wellness advocate who helps inspire female physicians and working moms to do the work they love and absolutely love life. Her work in the world is to openly tell how she faced professional burnout early in her family medicine career so that no one feels alone, all know that change is possible because "if she can do it, so can I" and that you can have a joy-filled and sustainable career. She lives and practices life coaching and medicine in rural Southwestern Indiana, loves her roles as farmer's wife, athlete and mother of three. Besides being sassy, she enjoys getting mud on her shoes, teaching her children to catch tadpoles and reading a great fantasy novel. In this episode, Errin and I definitely get sassy and talk about how burnout was the worst year of her life and left her asking: "What is wrong with me?!?!" Reaching the moment where she had everything she'd been striving for and then realizing something was missing she described as "when you reach the mountaintop and it feels like a deep dark canyon, and then you find the basement". It only took her 3 months into her medical career before she was looking for an out. When she reached out she got told she'd get used to it, it was normal, and maybe she should pop an antidepressant. Then, she met a coach. And the moment she finally felt seen, heard and understood - she began to heal. Now, she helps other female physicians and moms heal their own burnouts. In addition to 1:1 coaching, she has an online course called From Burnt Out To Badass, and she started a directory of physician coaches so that everyone can find the person they need. She credits learning to name and claim her emotions outside of 'numb' and 'angry' as crucial to her healing and talks a ton about really being her sassy self and how leaving her personality behind when she became DR. WEISSMAN was a major burnout factor for her. She wants you to know this: You are not broken. You are not the problem. This [burnout] is not a character flaw. And she'd love for you to ask yourself, "What if...... ..... you gave yourself the permission to explore? ..... you allowed your personality to shine through? ..... you could let go of your identity that you gained because of your career or degree? ..... you could be empowered to just be you? The pain she experienced in seeing her child go from perfectly normal and healthy to critically ill while she feared the uncertainty of the future shaped how she now helps other people understand the difference between pain and suffering.  It can be difficult to feel intense emotions and sit with those feelings, especially as a doctor. But if we can acknowledge our pain and begin to navigate it, it doesn't hold the power over us that we think it does, and it won't last as long as it normally would otherwise.  When she was finally able to work through her pain, Dr. Maggie was able to gain perspective and realize that she could be present in the new normal and take joy in the small moments and little victories. And while suffering can be indefinite, something that you will have to face in small moments every day, acknowledging the pain of those moments can help you move through them and appreciate the progress of the journey out of your suffering. After her experience, she became certified in coaching and now helps other moms navigate the devastation that comes with having a child that suffers from rare chronic diseases. By helping them acknowledge their own grief, she helps them understand the difference between pain and suffering and how to be present and support their child through their diagnosis. Tune in today to learn more about the magic that Dr. Maggie is bringing into the world and how she is helping parents and children everywhere navigate their grief by understanding the differences between pain and suffering.  “When you actually accept and move through your pain, it doesn't last nearly as long as you think.” Dr. Maggie Kang Connect with Dr. Kang: Maggie Kang MD Freebie Instagram | Facebook | LinkedIn  2 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT A LOW-COST!!! Not everyone is brave enough to start a practice straight out of residency, much less to do so in Fairbanks, Alaska. But that didn't stop Dr. Kara Hartl. She opened her practice with the goal of raising the bar and maintaining the Ivory Tower concept of practicing medicine and providing the highest standard of care to her patients. By providing top-notch medicine, her practice evolved into a multi-specialty medical center that was serving the needs of her community. This medical center ultimately brought life to what is now known as Troy Medical, named for a dear patient of hers who was suffering from multiple conditions outside of Dr. Kara's field of expertise without access to a specialist. What can you do when you don't have access to specialty health care in small or rural areas? Dr. Kara has revolutionized practice medicine with Troy Medical by offering specialists virtually to her patients by leveraging technology. Troy Medical operates by bringing fractional doctors and virtual medicine to the infrastructure of medical facilities using technology and medical imaging to provide the patient exam.  These facilities are unique in that they have a small footprint, allowing them to keep a relatively small overhead. With a staff of one person that has boots on the ground, they can refer patients to local services such as imaging, infusions, and labs while helping patients navigate technology and interpret medical diagnoses. She has locations in Fairbanks, AK, and Austin, TX, and looking to expand nationwide to continue to revolutionize healthcare in rural communities.  Tune in today to hear more about how Dr. Kara is meeting patients where they are while raising the bar of medical care. Growing up as a lover of science, Dr. Kathy Zhang found herself on the road to medical school as a young adult. Starting her career as a hospitalist for four years, she quickly realized that the expedited culture of the patient experience was not how she envisioned serving her patients as a young girl.  While deep in the throws of burnout as a hospitalist, Kathy found her way into a fellowship that was more in line with her calling and how she wanted to serve her patients. What was initially a quick way out turned into a transition away from her burnout. She now splits her time between inpatient care and her own coaching and podcast business, but she got there through therapy and coaching. Having experienced the change that physicians can gain through coaching, she had the overwhelming desire to share it with everyone she could. Her passion lies in helping other physicians find their way back to the driver's seat of their own lives and how to navigate their struggles in a way that feels true to them. Using some amazing tools such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) tapping, hypnosis, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), we can peel back the layers of conditioning that we've been stuck in for years to get back to the light in our lives. These modalities help us realize that we're not broken, and there is a way out of the thought patterns that keep us rooted in burnout. When we are pushed into burnout by a career in healthcare that demands more than we are physically able to continue providing, we have to find our own way out. There is no specific formula for getting you out of burnout because the answer varies from person to person. I spoke with Dr. Laurie Boge who shared her experience with burnout and how she found her way out through following what was in alignment with what she wanted in her life. After beginning her career in medicine, she discovered very early that she was not cut out for the typical physician life and wanted something that would provide her the flexibility to work on her own terms. For her, that looked like emergency medicine. Ultimately, even with the added flexibility that she found in emergency medicine, she found herself in burnout, leaving her with the option of working less as her only relief. Unfortunately, working less isn't always an option that you can afford in the early years of a career as a physician. Through years of trial and error and following what felt to be in alignment with her goals, she found her way to the VA Hospital of Miami, providing her with the work pace that allowed her to provide optimal care for her patients. Through her years of finding balance, she gave birth to Greencloud Apparel, a scrubs company that provides chic and comfy scrubs for women who want to promote health and harmony in the medical industry.  Her message speaks to those of us who are in burnout and looking for our way out. You have to keep searching and keep striving for an environment where you can thrive. You have to find the path that is best for you to create the life that you desire. If that involves medicine, great! If not, that's also great! So tune into this episode to see what paving your way out of burnout might look like and how you can apply it to your situation. It's no secret that the main driving force behind the burnout we face as healthcare providers comes directly at the hands of the broken healthcare system. Shifting away from proper patient care and leaning heavily on tasks, lists, and analytics, the system sets us up for failure and puts us right on the path to feeling burned out, helpless, and devoid of the passion that brought us to healthcare in the first place.  In this episode, I chat with Catie Harris, who has worn all the hats that you can find under the nursing umbrella, and we touch on the burnout that nurses face and how it is different from the burnout that doctors experience - but equally as detrimental to our patients.  With the shift in the hospital system that continues to adopt a more corporate face and strip responsibility from their nurses, we are seeing a trend upwards in early burnout. Many nurses are starting straight in the face of burnout only a few years into their careers, pushing them to explore other avenues, such as going to grad school to transition to the role of a nurse practitioner.  While this may be just what the doctor ordered for some nurses, others are still struggling to find their place, even with a myriad of degrees hanging on the wall. Catie and I talk about how so many nurses out there are starting to explore the ways that they can make a difference and share their knowledge and expertise outside of the crushing walls of the hospital.  Listen in today to hear more about the opportunities that exist out there for nurses to escape the burnout of the hospital system while still pursuing the passion that they have for helping their patients. “Nothing was going to change in my lifespan working in the hospital.” Catie Harris [00:26] Welcome to the show, Catie Harris! Neurodiversity is something I really love talking about because it is a topic that we all too often misinterpret for what it really is. Neurodivergent brains operate in different ways and process information differently, meaning that a one-size-fits-all approach isn't best suited to those of us who are neurodivergent.  The average frameworks for building habits and achieving goals don't really work for the neurodivergent crowd. Where most of us may gain benefit from reading a self-help book or applying the “top 5 most effective habits,” - someone who is neurodivergent might just find themselves struggling to understand why these approaches never pan out for them. Slapping a diagnosis on a mental health condition isn't as helpful as we once thought it might be. When we apply a label to someone, we put them in a box that may be misunderstood and, by doing so, we are missing a unique view of the world that surrounds us and insight that could change the way we relate with each other.  Another way that neurodivergent individuals are being misunderstood in the world is through the lens of marketing. Advertisements that speak to specific pain points may be doing more harm to your neurodivergent audience than you realize. Most marketing campaigns aren't presented from the trauma-informed lens or adapted to non-linear thinkers.  Listen in to this episode, where we shine a little light on the world of neurodiversity and explore the ways we can change how we approach mental diagnoses and social norms for the neurodivergent people in our lives. “You have full control and agency over how you decide to show up in the world.” Kate Hollis In this episode: [00:26] Welcome to the show with Kate Hollis! We're back for round two with Dr. Melissa Hankins this week! We spent last week's episode talking about the trauma that we face as physicians and how it develops for many of us in residency at the hand of our attending physicians. This week, Dr. Hankins is cluing us into a trauma processing model called EFT tapping (Emotional Freedom Techniques). EFT Tapping is a unique way to bring you back into the present moment in your body and diffuse the stress response while you process traumatic events, past or present. It has even been shown to decrease cortisol levels associated with stressful events or memories.  As physicians, many of us have experienced traumatic events in our childhood that allowed us to develop the traits that make us so effective as physicians. Many of us are people-pleasers, perfectionists, workaholics, ETC. Oftentimes, the development of these habits stem from an untreated trauma that occurred early in our lives. Self-compassion and self-forgiveness are key to processing daily trauma and correcting bad habits or behaviors that were formed as a trauma response. Finding a self-care outlet to discharge the trauma that you experience in the moment can limit its ability to resurface in unexpected ways. Taking the time to make sure that you're handling your trauma as it arises can save a world of hurt for your future self and those who surround you. Tune in to this week's episode to get more details on how the trauma we faced as children can present in our adult lives and some effective treatments that we can use to face those events without triggering a trauma response. “Trauma is not the thing that happened to you, it's how you are reacting to the thing that happened to you.” Dr. Melissa Hankins In this episode: [00:26] Welcome back to the show with Dr. Melissa Hankins! Trauma is something that is present in all walks of life in all professions. However, one way that trauma impacts us differently as physicians is that we are taught that it is a normal part of our work as a physician and we are to stuff it down and just keep going. The job itself as a physician is riddled with trauma with the amount of sickness, pain, and death that we face. But, a different flavor of trauma that isn't discussed is that of the training that doctors face.  All Resident doctors turn to their Attending physician for guidance and training while they learn the ropes of medicine. Oftentimes, this training can be harsh and demanding with a focus on criticism and correction, rather than support and mentorship.  The negative impact this accumulated trauma has on the mental and emotional well-being of resident doctors is, what I believe to be, one of the first tastes of burnout we experience as physicians.  I chat with clinical psychiatrist, Dr. Melissa Hankins, and she shines some light on this trauma and the different actions we can take as Attendings and Residents to move our training forward without the damaging trauma that pushes us right down the path to burnout town. Listen to this episode to hear more about what trauma looks like in the Resident/Attending relationship and some resources you can leverage to do better as an Attending or cope better as a Resident. “One of the hallmarks of trauma is you feel isolated and alone.” Dr. Melissa Hankins In this episode: [02:02] Welcome to the show, Dr. Melissa Hankins! We will always be in some sort of recovery from our addiction when we find ourselves faced with old habits. For those of us who have experienced burnout, we will always be in recovery from our addiction to work and it will often be so easy to find ourselves falling into old habits and toxic patterns of overworking ourselves to the state of burnout. Financial Independence is one of those topics that I really feel like can't get enough coverage. Our relationship with money determines how we set ourselves up for success in the future and how we let go of the unhealthy ways that we let money control our lives. I absolutely hate the word “resilient.” I think it's a term that people use as an easier way to say “suck it up buttercup” with a smack on your ass to send you on your way.   As physicians, I think we know all too well what it's like to just power through some of the hardest times in our studies, careers, and lives. We put our noses to the grindstone and we don't pick them up for years. These habits often earn us a label of resilience, when really it's just a precursor to burnout if we're not careful.  But, there are ways that we can be resilient and tough in our everyday lives, and the approach that you take can look so much different than the one you were exposed to in high school sports or your residency program.  I talk with Steve Magness today about what it looks like to build resilience in a healthy way by listening to our bodies and tapping into our mental well-being to make the best decisions for ourselves, even if those decisions are hard as hell.   Listen in to our conversation where we talk about the main takeaways of Steve's book, Do Hard Things: Why We Get Resilience Wrong And The Surprising Science Of Real Toughness.
