24 year-old singer/songwriter Faye Webster stopped by Shangri-La earlier this month in between stops on her tour opening for Wilco to chat with Justin Richmond and play some songs off of her latest album, I Know I'm Funny haha. Faye started releasing music independently when she was just 16 years-old. In 2017 her second album was released through Awful Records—home to the Atlanta hip-hop collective. Faye was a bit of an outlier on the rap-heavy label but working with them gave her a different perspective on recording than she otherwise would've had. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Faye about how artists like The Ramones and Garth Brooks influenced her writing style. Before Playboi Carti was issued a pretty aggressive ultimatum by Mario Judah to drop his long-awaited follow-up album to his 2018's Die Lit, Whole Lotta Red, or else he'll drop it for him. Before Playboi Carti as gifted a $120,000 TANK by Kanye West which lead fans to believe that he has a hand in Playboi's latest album…AND THEN it was revealed that Kanye not only collaborated on a song produced by Wheezy but also executive produced the entire album. Before Playboi Carti would walk on runways for Kanye's Yeezy line, in ads for Nike or became the voice behind the latest Givenchy campaign. Playboi Carti was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He started making music in his early teens on Garage Band and uploading it to SoundCloud. He never talked about his music to his friends at school but eventually, they discovered it themselves and he said their validation “put a battery in his back”. Soon enough, he caught the attention of Awful Records who would later sign him. Carti may have seemed like an overnight success when he broke through with his 2017 self-titled mixtape that peaked at number 12 on the Billboard 200 with hits like Magnolia and Woke Up Like This but when his debut studio album, Die Lit, debuted in 2018 peaking a number 3 on the same chart…Carti knew his mysterious ways was about to truly change the game.

Atlanta wunderkind Faye Webster is on the cusp of releasing her fourth studio album, 'I Know I’m Funny haha,' out June 25th via Secretly Canadian. For Live on KEXP, Troy Nelson details the anomaly of Webster’s music, which draws as much from the lap-steel singer-songwriter pop of the 1970s and teardrop country tunes as it does from the audacious personalities of her city’s rap and R&B community, where she first found a home on Awful Records. For her six-song, full-band set, recorded at Tweed Studios in Athens, Georgia, Webster plays a number of new songs from the forthcoming album, as well as her 2019 'Atlanta Millionaires Club’ track, "Kingston.” Recorded 03/09/2021.
