In this episode, we discuss the results of last weeks debate over Lil Wayne Versus Drake for a hit-for-hit battle. Drake also released his top 5 with a mystery guest. The curator of the Cage Match Project and host for this podcast, Ariel René Jackson, interviews Betelhem Makonnen, an Austin-based artist whose practice challenges societal limitations regarding identity, migration, and time. On this episode we focus on time as our metaphorical cage regarding the demand for productivity and how we might resist having to choose between that and exile. Makonnen talks about the ideas behind their solo exhibition, "Rock Standard Time (RST)" at Big Medium Gallery. How much time does inner wellbeing require? In this special recording, designer, Supernaturalist, cultural activist and fiber artist Xenobia Bailey is in conversation with DCPL Artist in Residence Tsedaye Makonnen discussing her process, work and inspirations. Xenobia Bailey studied ethnomusicology at the University of Washington, it was there that her interest in craftsmanship and fabric took full bloom. She worked as a costume designer for the renowned African-American community theater, Black Arts West, until her acceptance into Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 1974. She received her BA in industrial design while she learned to crochet under needle artist, Bernadette Sonona, after which she began to create and sell colorful crocheted hats inspired by distinctly African-American patterns, themes and hairstyles. Bailey is best known for her eclectic crochet hats and large scale crochet mandalas, consisting of colorful concentric circles and repeating patterns. Her pieces are often connected to her ongoing project "Paradise Under Reconstruction in the Aesthetic of Funk". Her designs draw influences from in Africa, China, and Native American and Eastern philosophies, with undertones of the 1970's funk aesthetic. Her hats have been featured in United Colors of Beneton Ads, on The Cosby Show, and in the Spike Lee film Do the Right Thing (worn by Samuel L. Jackson as DJ Mister Señor Love Daddy). Bailey has been artist-in-residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, and the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation in New York City. Her work has been exhibited at the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Jersey City Museum, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Her work is in the permanent collections at Harlem's Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Allentown Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Arts, and the Museum of Arts and Design. Tsedaye Makonnen is an Ethiopian-American interdisciplinary artist, a mother and a former doula. Recurring themes present in her work are identity, colorism, womanhood, ritual and kinship. She's particularly drawn to conveying the African Diaspora's creative responses to assimilating, destroying and recreating the Self within new and/or hostile territories, whether that happens to be a new country or a hospital room. As of late, she has been connecting the forced migrations taking place in DC and abroad through performance art and installations.

2014 was a banner year for a handful of rappers and producers who were familiar to hip-hop fans - Young Money, GOOD Music, Wiz Khalifa, Rick Ross, etc - but their music was evolving and absorbing influences from the margins. Upstarts Fetty Wap, Rae Sremmurd, Bobby Shmurda, OT Genasis, Makonnen and Dej Loaf all scored huge hits and got cosigns from the previous generation of rap stars. DJ Mustard kept chugging along with a string of top 10 radio records in a streak which may have only been preceded by The Neptunes the decade prior. History of Hip Hop 2014 is a rich tapestry of ATL trap, West Coast gangster rap and NYC drug dealer anthems, plus a ton of styles that defy categorization (D.R.A.M. raps over a Nintendo theme, Vic Mensa sings over deep house, Mystikal does a spot-on James Brown impression and Kanye is flipping full on gospel music). We hope you enjoy listening to the mix as much as we did making it!

Makonnen is a legend. He's been laying low for the past few years but I saw him perform at Fat Nick's show and we started talking on Instagram and got in the studio to do this interview a few days later. We talked about what he's been up to, his new song Sunlight On Your Skin with Lil Peep, what their friendship was like, the controversy about the other version of the song, Falling Down which features XXXtentacion and much more. Thanks to Makonnen for coming through, you are a legend and an inspiration. We had an intimate conversation with a young legend (yeah, he birthed a lot of sounds!) Sonny Digital (he produced "Tuesday" for Makonnen, amongst multiple hits that we can list but just don't have enough space for it lol). He drops jewels for the up-coming producer community, his transition into really pushing himself as an artist and so much more. Lately we've been seeing some progress in the music production community, in terms of bigger producers finally "speaking up" on certain frustrations in the industry. We had to get Sonny's opinions/thoughts on the matter. What an episode. Another must-listen.
In this episode of the show, we talked about Chrisette Michelle and her performance for Donald Trump. We also talked about Makonnen coming out of the closet and after that, we covered the Troy Ave/Taxstone situation…smh.Per usual, we have #GAF(Give a F*ck) and #YOTW(Yams of the week). Thanks for tuning in! pressPlayLikePuff Big Therm

Last night we were joined by Jacob Moore and Katie Kelly of Pigeons and Planes. We looked ahead to some of music releases slated to drop over the next few weeks, especially Young Thug's controversial Carter 6 drop. We also discussed homosexuality in hip-hop in the wake of a recent article that profiled the issue using Thug and Makonnen as examples. And of course, we talked about how we find the music that we select, both on P&P and NW3RADIO.
Mixpak FM 081 comes from New Orleans based producer & DJ, Kilbourne. Born in Philly and raised in New Jersey, Kilbourne has that East Coast club sound on lock. Exploring the interactions between the club underground and pop music, Kilbourne has recently delivered Jersey remixes of Fetty Wap, Makonnen and The Weeknd, as well as collaboration tracks with Rizzla, Shwarz and DJ 809. Often industrial, and sometimes dark her productions are always club-friendly. Watch out for her US tour and upcoming work with NY vocalist, FXWRK. Her Mixpak FM is not for the faint-hearted - an energetic run through some hard club sounds, including remixes of Caribbean artists Kerwin Du Bois, Zoelah, as well as rave re-visionings of pop & rap hits, and nods to NY club affiliates False Witness, Joey Labeija & Cueheat.
