Today's collective reading got deep — but started light. Someone's going through someone's phone... but it's not what you think. This isn't a lover's quarrel — it's parental patrolling. Privacy breaches wrapped in protection. Control disguised as care. And then… came the Wolves. Cue the soundtrack: from Odd Future's Radical to Clarissa Pinkola Estés' Women Who Run With the Wolves, this turned into a whole feminine freedom anthem. If you've ever felt watched, boxed in, or tamed — this one's for the wild ones breaking ancestral surveillance.
In this episode of the Faces of the Future Podcast the crew is back with another episode on their way to episode 200. Join Chandler and I as we discuss music inspirations, dream collabs, Odd Future, head shaving techniques, Yukon Cornelius, bringing an alien to Wendy's, divisive candy, Pappyland, bounce house chaos, & 1996's hit film 'Sling Blade'.99 Questions on Instagram!99 Questions on BlueSky!--ASK ME A QUESTION! The guys discuss their experiences so far with the LA fires. Really trying to figure out who, why, what and how did it all start. Netflix now has Raw and commercials to Brandon's chagrin. Travis Scott and Pat McAfee: why are they so popular. Odd Future diss 13 years in the making. What we think about Covid and Fauci now, plus his role in the HIV scare. Brandon's new weirdos: Charge Buddy Sam, Dreadlock Amazon Guy, and strip club bouncer that wears a doorag and always wants change. It's been a weird week hope we can make you smile with this one.

What up Fellas!

What up Fellas! Nennt mich Nostradamus! Many of us have sought information about our family history, trying to solve those unanswered questions about our predecessors. In the quest for truths about others through examining their lives and lineage, we may also find truths about ourselves in the process. In his latest release and nonfiction debut, The Dead Don't Need Reminding: In Search of Fugitives, Mississippi, and Black TV Nerd Shit, New York Times bestselling author Julian Randall braids past with present as he retraces the life of his grandfather, a white-passing patriarch driven from a town in Mississippi, all the way to Randall's own internal battles with depression and how he ultimately emerged from its depths. Randall weaves pop culture into his pages, exploring grief, family, emotional health, and the American way with a medley of media ranging from Into the Spiderverse and Jordan Peele movies to BoJack Horseman and the music of Odd Future. Seattle writer Ally Ang joins Randall in conversation for an evening of laughter, tears, and everything in-between. Julian Randall is a contributor to the #1 New York Times bestseller Black Boy Joy and his middle-grade novel, Pilar Ramirez and the Escape From Zafa, was published by Holt in 2022. He has received fellowships from Cave Canem, Tin House, and Milkweed Editions. He is the winner of the 2019 Betty Berzon Emerging Writer Award from the Publishing Triangle, the 2019 Frederick Bock Prize, and a Pushcart prize. His poetry has been published in The New York Times Magazine, Ploughshares, and POETRY. His first book, Refuse, won the Cave Canem Poetry Prize and was a finalist for an NAACP Image Award. He lives in Chicago. Ally Ang is a gaysian poet and editor based in Seattle, Washington. Their work has been published in Queer Nature: A Poetry Anthology, Nepantla: An Anthology Dedicated to Queer Poets of Color, Foglifter, Columbia Journal, and elsewhere. They are a Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominee, a Tin House workshop alum, and a 2022 Jack Straw Writers Program fellow. Ang holds a BA in sociology and Asian American studies from Wellesley College and an MFA in creative writing from the University of Washington. They are currently working on their first full-length poetry collection. When not writing, Ang can be found gazing longingly at bodies of water or doting on their cat, Gomez.
On Episode 108 of the Guest Speaker Series, we welcome an artist we've been a fan of since before the inception of the podcast: Burlington, Vermont's very own maari of 99 Neighbors! maari, formerly known as Sam Paulino, is one of the founders of the viral sensation that was 99 Neighbors, a collective of 10 creatives all from the Burlington area who became household names after their breakout album ‘Television' in 2019. maari talks in detail how ‘Television' changed the band's lives, including the song “Champion” being featured on ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians', to then moving to Chicago and being signed to Warner Records and Chance the Rapper's management team. They were drawing numerous comparisons to other hip-hop collectives of the era, such as Odd Future and BROCKHAMPTON. Alas, all good things must come to an end, as maari details the group's recent decision to not release music together anymore at the conclusion of their 2021 album ‘Wherever You're Going I Hope It's Great'. He explains the desire for all of 99's members to branch out and release solo music, which ultimately led to maari teaming up with fellow Vermont-based producer Es-K for his debut solo album ‘All Is Fair In Love & War', a 10 track masterpiece which also features frequent Drake collaborator, Quentin Miller. Mike and maari also discuss a variety of other topics, including the cultural importance of SoundCloud, their mutual admiration for Brockton, MA's Van Buren Records, which artists he thinks are blending genres in the most creative ways, the state of Vermont's music scene, the hilarious name of his first ever hip-hop group as a kid, the amazing moment he got to meet Tyler, the Creator, and so much more. It's our first episode of the year and we had to start it off right (Remoy doesn't think so) with a game! Your hosts are joined by the illustrious German Villegas, podbrother and host of Modern Manhood, to play our new game Paroles de Patriarchy!Samantha does a “dramatic reading” of a few songs spanning genres and eras, and German and Remoy guess what they are. But most importantly, they answer the question, are these songs masking or unmasking masculinity?German lives up to his reputation as a bonafide music-head, providing thoughtful insight about the performance of masculinity through the lens of these artists' style and personas. He also drops some important historical context around music and masculinity. How have artists subverted gender roles via music performance and did that permeate other areas of their lives as artists? The crew discusses!Samantha and German then take a deep dive into the performance of masculinity in music. Is it different from genre to genre? Are there parallels between the MASKulinity-tech influencer pipeline we talked about earlier this season and the bravado of men's musical performances? We'd love to hear what you think, so be sure to shoot us a note. Finally, German preps us for the new season of Modern Manhood, “Man Vs Machine.” Listen till the end to hear the dope trailer.Referenced on this episode:Bikini KillOne of our artist picks opens up about mental health"I Made My ADHD Into My Strength": Understanding The Link Between Rap & NeurodivergenceCash's masculine vulnerabilityThe Beastie Boys' Feminist EvolutionOne of our picks helped mainstream male emotionCOMPANION PIECES:A Man's World? Eyedress, Homeshake, Na'Kel Smith and María Zardoya discuss the difficulties of re-capturing a moment, pushing everything else away when going through a creative block, and the importance of controlling your own visual identity. Eyedress is a singer, rapper and producer who grew up in the Philippines but moved to the USA with his family at the age of six. He grew up playing in punk bands, before moving back to Manila in 2005, where he formed garage pop band Bee Eyes. Meanwhile, he was pursuing his own project which would eventually become Eyedress, a name he originally came up with for his Twitter account. His music takes inspiration from everything from shoegaze to bedroom-pop, and last year he released his fifth album, FULL TIME LOVER. Canadian musician Peter Sagar, AKA Homeshake, is known for his unique brand of R&B influenced indie-pop. Originally part of Mac DeMarco's touring set-up, he uses synthesizers and drum-machines to accompany his guitar-playing and soft vocals, creating a relaxing, ethereal sound. Na'Kel Smith is a rapper, actor and skater who was originally one of the non-musician members of alternative hip-hop group Odd Future. After debuting with a powerful, emotional verse on Earl Sweatshirt's DNA and teaching himself how to record, engineer, and make beats, he's evolved into an experimental, lo-fi artist who embodies the spirit of DIY music. Puerto Rican singer María Zardoya fronts American indie-pop band The Marías. They create a dreamlike fusion of jazz, psychedelia and funk music, drawing inspiration from the band's diverse musical backgrounds and singing in both English and Spanish. Their debut album Cinema was released in 2021, and they've since gone on to collaborate with the likes of Bad Bunny and Cuco.

By 2010, so many of the bloggers who'd set out to subvert the gatekeepers had become them. Resentment grew: from a new generation of artists, from heavily-financed competition and especially from the labels. More money - spent on building websites, growing networks, signing acts and retaining lawyers - meant closer scrutiny on what started out as passion projects. And it all would come to a head as families gathered around the dinner table.
